Rio Jewish Heritage Half-day Tour

Leonardo was a wonderful guide with an interesting personal history. The Jewish history started with Portuguese arrivals & enjoyed hearing about the waves of immigration. We gained insight into Jewish life in Rio and were impressed by the facilities and beautiful Shuls. I was impressed by the monument to Yitzhak Rabin in such a beautiful setting and a very sensitively curated Holocaust centre, with very engaging pictorial displays. Also good to see was that Jewish symbols such as a public Menorah are openly present. (I had to travel for an hour to the pick-up point; a more convenient arrangement would have been better)

Our guide Ephraim was thoroughly knowledgeable about both historical and current Jewish affairs in Rio. He took us to places, including a fascinating little museum in a former law office, that we never would have found on our own. There was a great balance between leading us and letting us discover things on our own.

This was an incredible tour that provided an amazing overview of the history of Jews in Brazil, as well as everyday Jewish life today. We could not have had a more knowledgable and wonderful guide in Efraim!

My tour guides were fabulous. We went to the Holocaust Museum which was one of the most powerful experiences I’ve ever had. We went to the Clube Israelite Brasiliero which is a community center with a kosher grocery, synagogue and full gym and workout center. Of course there was Sugarloaf, Copacabana beach, Yitzhak Rabin Park and sculpture.

Terrific, knowledgeable hosts make the difference. Great sites visited. Maybe a map or list of Jewish places may add to the experience?

Our tour Ephraim and our driver turned up to collect my husband and myself spot on time. He spoke wonderful English and he made the tour very, very interesting. His knowledge of the history of the Jews of Rio was awesome and we visited so many places that we would never had seen if we hadn’t taken this tour. This tour is so well worth going on.

Efraim provided us with a thorough look at Rio’s Jewish community through site visits, stories and explanations. Among the many highlights were the Grand Synagogue and recently completed Holocaust Memorial-I have seen memorials throughout the world and this one was most impressive and meaningful. The tour is a must-do for people interested in exploring Jewish heritage. It was easy to book and covered a lot in a short time in a comfortable vehicle with a great driver. Our tour guide, Ephraim, was superb. Very Knowledgable and very enthusiastic about his subject and community. We were picked up at our hotel on time and we were then treated to a fantastic tour of Sephardi, Ashkenazi and Reform synagogues and their histories. Also very lucky to visit the Holocaust Memorial on the day it was formally opened. What a wonderful and supportive community.

We really weren’t impressed with the tour. Only shown synagogues and a community centre (which we had asked not to go to). Too many tips/donations requested

I went on a tour with Efraim Schvaitzer and it was amazing. His English was very good - I had many questions about the Jewish culture in Brazil and he answered all of them and more. I knew a little going into this tour and feel like I know a lot more now. I would recommend this your to everyone and anyone who wants to know more about Judaism in Rio and all over Brazil. I was fortunate to go to a lot of synagogues, museums and a social club.

Excellent fulfilling cultural tour of the jewish history in Rio and Brazil. We saw multiple synagogues inside and out for all sects of judaism - we had detailed discussions of the significance of each synagogue and the opportunity to see the Torahs and explore each building The small jewish museum had wonderful menorahs and we got a guided discussion of the key items there - Overall we could not have had a better experience and highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be in touch with their jewish heritage outside of their country Our guide was Leonardo and he did an amazing job sharing with us not only the details of the tour but his own personal heritage - A big Shalom to Leonardo and this company for continuing to keep alive the roots of jewish history in Rio

A wonderful time touring Jewish sites and more with Efraim. From the moment we got into the car he was pointing out sites and giving us information about Rio and Brazilian history. He was easy to understand and very informative. We visited several synagogues. A small Jewish museum and the Jewish club which is actually a fully integrated community center. I highly recommend this tour and Efraim.

Leonardo is an excellent guide. He showed us a number of synagogues and explained the history Of the Jews in the area and interesting things about the city in general. His personal stories about his family and ancestors contributed to the enjoyment of this tour. We would highly recommend that you hire Leonardo and his driver.

Leonardo was charming. We were very interested in his knowledge and his deep feelings about the synagogues that he showed us. He interjected his own personal experiences with some of the synagogues we visited. Thanks for the pictures that he took of us in several locations....fun to receive them once we were back home.

We had no idea that there was so much Jewish heritage in Rio. The synagogue buildings were architecturally superb and they ranged from classical to modern. Our guide, Leonardo, was very knowledgeable and was always ready to answer our miriad of questions. At each location we were warmly welcomed and we were made to feel very welcome and never rushed. All in all a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable half day which I can highly recommend to anyone contemplating taking this tour.
