Itinerary
The Pedra da Gávea trail is one of the most popular and challenging hiking trails in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a favorite among adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts due to its stunning views and thrilling ascent. As hikers ascend, they will encounter various terrains, including steep slopes, rocky sections, and occasional scrambling. The trail requires a moderate to high level of fitness, as some parts can be physically demanding. It is essential to wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack some snacks for sustenance.
One of the highlights of the Pedra da Gávea trail is the Carrasqueira, a challenging rock climbing section that requires careful maneuvering. Ropes and climbing equipments are provided to assist hikers in this steep and exposed part of the trail. As you climb higher, the views become increasingly breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the city, the coastline, and the surrounding mountains.
After a few hours of hiking, the trail reaches the summit of Pedra da Gávea, where hikers are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and an awe-inspiring 360-degree view. On a clear day, you can see landmarks such as the Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Tijuca Forest National Park. The journey back follows the same path, so it's essential to plan your hike with enough time to descend safely before sunset. Overall, the Pedra da Gávea trail promises an unforgettable adventure for those seeking a challenging hike and stunning vistas of Rio de Janeiro's natural beauty. However, it is crucial to hike responsibly, follow trail rules, and respect the environment to ensure the preservation of this fantastic natural attraction for future generations.

Guide was excellent. The tour that uses rope to climb and repel down is the best. Avoids the VERY steep climb. Pack plenty of water and phone charger.
Our tour guide, Lucas was incredible! Lucas was very personable, ensured our safety and taught us many things along the way. We learned hiking techniques, about the indigenous and imported plants we saw, and some history of the region - all while experiencing breath taking views. Lucas was with us every step of the way and was there to assist and coach anyone in need. Along the way, we saw several monkeys and an ant-eater. The jungle and the mountain views were incredible! When it came to the rock-climbing portion of the trip, Lucas was an expert guide and guided us through the sketchy parts. To get to the very top, it is physically demanding because you will be climbing rocks, roots, and steep earth. The journey requires some problem solving and Lucas was there to coach and suggest solutions. We wish to thank Lucas for going above and beyond to make this hike one of the highlights of our trip to Rio!
Came to Rio on a last-minute business trip and only had the weekend to play. As an avid hiker, wanted to hike somewhere with great views and chose Pedra da Gavea - an epic hike with 360 views of Rio! I'd highly recommend going with Rio Natural Ecotourism, a small hiking touring company. Ronald Bulha, our guide, was experienced, knowledgeable about the history of what we were seeing, kind and patient, guiding each of us through the small technical portion of the hike. The experience exceeded my expectations and look forward to coming back and hiking again with them.
Great guides I 100% recommend them and the agency. Were super helpful and we all loved the explanations he gave us. For all hike lovers
the best hike in rio what a day a tough challenging hike with so much reward at the end the views of the city are amazing with a 1st class guide in eduoardo
Beautiful hiking and an amazing view. Strongly recommend to do it in a week day. We went on Saturday and was really crowded. Took much longer than expected. Need to be in good shape to complete the trekking.
I really loved the Pedra da Gávea hike. Our guide was very competent, spoke good english (which isn't always the case) and was always there to help, answer questions and take the best pictures for us. I recommend the hike to anyone which is physically able to hike a lot. It is the best view you can get of Rio de Janeiro!
Our guide, Didi, was great with our two boys, 8 and 11. He took safety very seriously and took us to the the top and back for a great day.
Often wonder whether guides are necessary for hiking we’ll know trails. This trip was definitely made awesome with the help of our guide Rafael, an experienced outdoor guide who helped a group of variable ability make it to the top and back including basic climbing and rappelling sections towards the top. Weather was perfect and the views outstanding at the summit. Think carefully about whether to take this in bad weather/visibility. The trails and wooden bridges slick and the going dangerous. Plus the views would not be there to reward your effort;)
“This experience was amazing! Honestly I didn’t know what I was up against but no regrets at all. I wouldn’t change it for the world and it’s a “must” thing to do. The tour guides were absolutely awesome! Very professional and supported us all the way. Shoutouts to the Rio Natural Ecotourism Tour group.”
Samuel is an amazing person and for this hiking I highly recommend this professional quide! At the end you will have a friend not just that person witch help you to achieve your goal!
We hiked Pedra da Gávea and on the next day up the sugarloaf with PAULO! Both hikes were marvellous as expected with beautiful nature and vistas of Rio and the sea. Both hikes had one difficult part each where ropes were required to climb or descend, but with the help of PAULO it was easy to manage. He is very experienced and with is calm way helps overcome any kind of fears of heights. Safety first! I would always want to go with him again!
This hike was so much fun and our guide Rafael Caja was fantastic. The hike had many different types of hiking and climbing aspects to it, I’ve got a good bit of experience but even though it might be difficult for some it’s accessible to everyone especially with the right guide! We had many different levels of climbers and everyone made it to the top with the help and encouragement of Rafael. The views are incredible and well worth the effort!
We used Rio Natural for two hikes for our trip to Rio - Christ the Redeemer and Pedra de Gavea. Both times we used them were fantastic! The guides were knowledgeable, professional, and personable and we couldn't recommend Rio Natural more. I'll admit that when we were planning on doing hikes in Rio, we were a bit worried about the safety aspect of it as foreigners, but Rio Natural made us feel very safe and made the experience easy and enjoyable. We were able to book both hikes just a few days out in advance via WhatsApp, were given clear pricing and communication as to expectations, and they were able to give us a guide for just the two of us. That made us feel really comfortable that we were going to be able to move at our own pace and do so with a knowledgeable, local guide. Fabio, our guide for our first hike to Christ the Redeemer, was fantastic. He was extremely outgoing and had a lot of insight about the local wildlife, culture, and people. We loved our time with him and really enjoyed the half-day hike up to Christ the Redeemer. Paolo, our guide for Pedra de Gavea, was awesome as well. He was extremely professional, made us feel very safe and was always looking out for us. We had never rock climbed before and he made us feel confident and safe. He was friendly and made sure we got to experience all that we could on Pedra de Gavea.
I want to thank all the professionalism of the team, I was well served from the first contact, I felt super safe to fly, I met wonderful people and made an unforgettable ride! It's really a lot to get in words, just living, just feeling... super recommend! VALEEEEEUU!!! 🙏✨🫶🍀☀️
One of the hardest and best excursions I've ever done! The Guide Eduardo is 5 stars, I recommend to anyone active, fit and with a spirit of safety to do so.
Wonderful tour!! We made the morning trail as recommended, the guide had lights and everything we needed! 10/10! Guide Samuel was very nice and took great photos!!
The landscapes are incredible, the climb is tough, but it's nothing out of this world, in 2 or 3 hours you can reach the top, and don't forget to bring insect repellent.
