Itinerary
If you are looking for a unique experience in Rio de Janeiro, the trail to the top of the Pedra da Gávea is the perfect choice. Considered one of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the city, this all-day adventure combines lush nature, overcoming and breathtaking views. Our journey begins with a walk through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world. During the route, we will explore trails in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, with stops at natural viewpoints and strategic points for rest and amazing photos. One of the highlights of the journey is the Carrasqueira, a technical section where the Guide offers total safety and guidance. Even those who have never climbed before can overcome this challenge with proper support. When you reach the peak of Pedra da Gávea, the reward is a 360-degree panoramic view that includes the Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Bread, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, the beaches of the South Zone and Barra da Tijuca. It is the ideal setting for contemplating, relaxing and recording unforgettable moments. With the accompaniment of an experienced and bilingual Guide, the trail is done with total safety, respecting the rhythm of the group and prioritizing the well-being of everyone.

The excursion was great and the view up is unbelievable. I had really a great time during the trip with the group and special mention to our guide Eduardo: he’s really nice, helpful and very patient. A great person that guided us with his passion to the top. What an amazing experience, I’ll do it again.
Edo was nothing but great. Personable, caring, and knowledgeable within the hike. Would do this again easily.
Amazing views and well worth the hike. Tour guides are professional, friendly, and helped to take beautiful photos
Fernando and eduardo were our guides and did a fantastic job. They kept a great pace, ensured our safety as we scrambled and climbed, and allowed us plenty of time for pictures and enjoying the view. Would absolutely recommend to anybody who enjoys hiking.
Great day out, but only for people that have a reasonable base level of fitness as there’s a lot hillwalking on technical Terrain. There’s also a little bit of climbing and descending with rope and harness, so not for the faint hearted. But that being said what a great experience. Lucas the guide knows this area very well speaks very good English.
Me and my friend booked this hike and we went with Edu. This was definitely the best thing we did in Rio. Everybody was super nice and helpful. The views were so worth the hike. Bring more water and food than you think you’ll need!
Amazing experience with friends and tour guide Eduardo and his colleagues who were with us the whole way . The tour guide shared alot of photos and videos of the trip. I highly recommend it.
What an experience of highs and lows! After an incredible hike and climb, I injured myself on the descent a little ways below the Carrasquiera. Didn't know it at the time but I fractured my knee. Eduardo was so helpful and kind, but he really couldn't carry me. It was such an ordeal with so much steep trail to go, but he stayed with me as I limped along hugging his shoulder. Finally, another guide appeared on the scene who piggybacked me down the mountain as much as he could. It was a very emotional day having broken my knee doing what I love with my girlfriend on her 50th birthday -- only the second day in Rio. We flew home the next day and I had knee surgery and am recovering. I hope I'll be able to do this again someday and will hope to do it with Eduardo!
This was a physically challenging hike, with elements of scrambling and rope-assisted climbing, but that all made it more enjoyable, and the views from the top made every step worth it. Expert guidance from Edu was critical to help us navigate our way up, and he took amazing individual photos and videos of us all once we were up there. If you're looking for something physically challenging with a great payoff, this is it!
This is maybe the best hike you can do in Rio, and absolutely the best view of the city. Our guides Edu and Fernando were incredible; super friendly, accommodating and took all the photos that you wanted throughout the hike. Not for the faint of heart, the path is not well maintained as its right in the heart of the Tijuca Forest. Expect lots of roots, rocks and occasional tight spaces. Bring lots of water and good shoes. The view is breathtaking and even intimidating; if you’re squeamish about heights maybe reconsider this trek. Even as someone who isn’t scared of heights, this tested me. 360 views of Rio and all its highlights, including Pedra Bonita, Cristo Redentor and Sao Conrado Beach. On a good day you can see all the way across Guanabara Bay. Can’t recommend this enough, truly a must-do thing in Rio, and worth all the effort!
It was a difficult but well worth it hike. Our guide instructed us along the way on how to climb over rocks and repel up and down a few places along the mountain. The views on top were one of a kind and our guide took the time to take some great photos of all of us.
Bring water, sunscreen and something to eat! This is definitely beyond just a beginner hike, but if you have any previous hiking experience you’ll enjoy it! Well worth the views
We did the Pedra da Gávea hike last Wednesday and had an amazing experience from start to finish. The only small issue was a delayed start—we were asked to meet at 7:40am but didn’t begin until around 8:30am. However, this was a minor point and didn’t take away from what turned out to be a fantastic day. Our guide, Eduardo, was excellent—professional, supportive, and very attentive throughout. He kept everyone motivated and made sure we felt safe and confident, especially during the more challenging sections of the hike. Although we initially expected a private guide for our group of three, the tour was run as a larger group with multiple guides (Eduardo, Tarzan, and Ronald) each leading smaller sub-groups. This actually worked really well. The guides communicated constantly and supported each other, ensuring that everyone kept pace and reached each checkpoint safely. A standout touch was how the guides helped capture the experience. They took photos and short videos at key points along the hike, which made a big difference and allowed us to fully enjoy the moment. Rodrigo, who organised the booking, was also great—he reached out via WhatsApp beforehand, provided clear instructions, and was very responsive to any questions. Overall, everything was run professionally and the whole team went above and beyond to make it a memorable experience. If you’re considering Pedra da Gávea, I would strongly recommend booking with this group—having experienced guides makes all the difference.
Lucas was great. Laid back, gave clear instructions, good sense of humor, and went the extra mile to get us all amazing photos. I mean, truly amazing.
Challenging but very rewarding experience. You climb over 700m but the views are extraordinary. Requires good fitness. The rock sections were managed well by the tour provider.
Edu was a great guide who took exceptional photos of the view!
Firstly Rodrigo kindly let me rearrange the hike after I fell unwell on the morning of the hike, which was greatly appreciated. When I felt better and rearranged, the hike was super well organised with info prior and Eduardo our guide on the day made it a greatly enjoyable day! The best view of Rio without a doubt!!!
The hike was long and challenging. There are portions of the hike that are a bit dangerous especially for those with little climbing experience, but Eduardo and our other guide were true professionals and helped with foot and hand hold placements when needed. They offered great guidance for hydration and food preparation and we were provided with climbing gear for the one portion of the hike where it is needed! The views are amazing and they take a bunch of great pictures and videos of the group/individuals that they can airdrop or message through whatsapp!
Excellent guide and tour, safe, reasonable price, would do it again
HONESTLY THE HARDEST THING IVE EVER DONE IN LIFE😭 however, EDUARDO our guide, Such an amazing soul! My sister and I were the slowest of the group. We were held back because it’s our first time doing such a hard trek. It was sooo hard. If you’re not trained or don’t do this as a daily, you can try but trust me it’s sooo hard! Rock climbing, going high into the mountains, small tracks, you name it, it had everything. But the view from the top is so worth it. You’d think going up is hard… coming back down was even harder😭 Eduardo (our guide) stayed with us the wholeeee time. Going up and going down. I’ve never met someone as sweet, caring and patient like him. If you see this Eduardo, I hope that everyday you have, you have the best in everything. Truly a blessing to having done this with the help of Eduardo. From the two slow canadian girls! Lot’s of love for this soul❤️
Amazing experience. It was a tough hike/climb, but the views at the top were well worth it. Our tour guide was extremely helpful and encouraging. Overall, I highly recommend. Just be sure to bring lots of water and be prepared for a challenging hike.
Highly recommend this hike! Lucas was a great tour guide and made myself and the rest of the group very comfortable throughout the experience. The hike itself isn't terribly difficult. I had never used a harness and ropes like you need for this hike, but Lucas made everyone comfortable and it was easier than I realized. And the views at the top are well worth the effort! Highly receommend the tour!
This was one of the best experiences I had in Rio. As others have mentioned, this is a very difficult hike so be aware of that. It is intensive on your legs and cardio and there is some climbing if you are afraid of heights. Assuming that all is good for you, I highly highly recommend. Had a blast and the guides were super nice!
Impressive experience! It was a very challenging trail. From the beginning, the guide Eduardo was focused on every detail in order to ensure a great hike. He was kind and helped us along the way up. He also took some photos. The view is impressive!
Phantastic day trip for those who like a bit of rock climbing. Stunning views from the top. The guide Eduardo was a really nice person who gave us lots of information. And he is a highly skilled photographer! I definitely recommend visiting Pedra de Gavea
6 hour trail. First time hiking in a group, 90 % hiking under shade getting attacked by mosquitos or plants. Last 10% you get the best views I was lucky it was a clear day you got to see everything in rio Sugar loaf, copacabana beach. Favelas abd christ the redeemor. Guides were very patient ensured no one left behind. I recommend bringing cash in case you need emergency drinks/ icecream from the vendors at the absailing section.
Great experience, excellent guide tour. Views are spectacular, great fun. It had bit of everything. Just make sure to bring plenty of water.
Great tour. A challenging hike with great views at the end. Eduardo was an excellent guide. The trail was beautiful and had great views along the way.
It was an awesome hike with spectacular views. Tour guide Eduardo was very helpful.
I really like this hike. At the top, you can take great photos. Bring at least 2 L of water maybe 3. This is not a hike for somebody who is out of shape or fragile. There are multiple points in the cycle, where you have to climb and maintain three point points of contact. There is a point in this hike when you need to use a rope and a harness to get up and down. This hike is a full body workout. At the end, I could feel every muscle beneath my waist. You need to be very careful at the top if you’re going to take photos by the edge. There is no safety briefing. This is your safety briefing. Make sure you eat breakfast before you hike and bring a snack to eat at the top. It said that this hike takes six hours, but maybe it’s because we spent so much time at the top that it was 8 hours until I finished the hike. Don’t forget to tip your tour guide. They do great work for this hike!
The tour was absolutely amazing! The guide was very attentive, explained every detail in English, and made sure everyone in the group was well taken care of. He even took some fantastic photos for all of us.
Everything you need they provide, very good experience, very good guide, fluent English and very helpful, absolutely recommend everyone its must try in rio.
The hike was in a beautiful area. Along the way, we saw some monkeys, and a few people even had the opportunity to see toucans. The hike was somewhat challenging, particularly in the Carrasquería section, where we actually had to do some rock climbing and rappelling on the way down. However, our guide Eduardo took great care of us. He made sure everyone felt comfortable during those more demanding sections. He had all the necessary equipment for the climbing and rappelling, and he also took pictures of everyone along the way. The view at the top was incredible and truly rewarding.
What an amazing experience! We really enjoyed this hike so much. The views are absolutely stunning! Our guide Rodrigo was really great, professional and fun and we always felt safe. I highly recommend this to everyone who looks for an adventure and best views of Rio.
We did this hike with Edu and his team, and they were amazing. We’re truly grateful for everything they did for us today. They explained every detail, took great care of us, and made safety a top priority. With their great advice, they made the rope-climbing part much easier than I expected. They had all the necessary equipment—hands down the best tour guides ever.
I had a great experience. I really enjoyed touring. The mountain with Eduardo as he took pictures and provided us with water and snacks zzz
Rodrigo is the best! Helped us climb the scary parts with ease (especially the Carrasqueira. We also saw four monkeys!!!
Our guide Rodrigo was our guide up this very steep and busy climb. We were glad we opted for his expertise.
Despite the rainy time, it was an excellent experience. Lucas, our guide was a very friendly and attentive compagnon. I might return for the photos from up there!
Hiking Pedra da Gávea was hands-down one of the most unforgettable experiences of our trip. The trail is challenging, steep in sections, and definitely not for beginners—but with our incredible guide Leo, the whole day felt both safe and thrilling. The views from the summit were nothing short of spectacular—Rio laid out beneath us with the ocean, city, and rainforest all in one sweeping panorama. Our guide even helped take amazing photos and made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy the top before heading back down. If you’re considering Pedra da Gávea, do it—and definitely go with a great guide like Leo. It made the experience safer, smoother, and way more fun than attempting it on our own. Highly, highly recommended!
If you ever wondered what it feels like to owe Mother Nature money from a past life, book this hike. Pedra da Gavea is not a “moderate trail.” It is a 6-hour, 8 km Brazilian war crime disguised as tourism. Think cardio bootcamp + free-solo rock climbing + surprise rain luge, all while Christ the Redeemer photobombs you from across the city. The trail itself: Straight up for 2.5 hours, then legit rock climbing with actual exposed sections where one wrong step turns you into a viral GoPro video titled “bro learns physics the hard way.” My ACL, PCL, and meniscus all hit DEFCON 1 and started drafting resignation letters. Coming down on wet clay is basically controlled falling with extra humiliation. Who this hike is for: People who do this 3-4 times a week for fun (looking at you, Boolia) Navy SEALs on vacation Anyone who thinks “I’m in pretty good shape” and wants to be violently corrected Who should STAY HOME: Anyone carrying more than 15 % body fat (you will be left as a sacrifice to the trail gods) People who think stairmaster counts as training Anyone who values functional knees. You pop statins like Skittles The hero of the day – Boolia (or whatever his name is, he’s a legend): This man is calmer than Buddha on Valium. While I was busy dying, he was casually belaying me up cliffs, taking aesthetic photos at the top, and never once laughed at my soul leaving my body. Zero rush, made me feel like I wasn’t actually about to become a cautionary tale. If you do this hike, beg, bribe, or sell a kidney to get Boolia as your guide. Dude is safety incarnate. Verdict: The view from the top is genuinely top-3 most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. You’ll feel closer to God because you’ll be praying on speed dial the entire time. Worth it? Yes. Will I ever do it again? Only if someone carries me in a sedan chair. Pro tip: Train like you’re auditioning for American Ninja Warrior, bring gloves, and maybe write your will. Your calves will never forgive you, but your Instagram will thank you. Do it once. Cry. Brag forever. 🇧🇷🏔️💀
Great experience! Definitely not easy hike but the views were totally worth it. The guides were so supportive and took epic photos and shots of us with their drone! Definitely recommend.
Fun, challenging hike that packs a lot into 4km - especially a lot of vert! Part rainforest (with monkeys) part scramble, part rope climb up and rappel down. The views from the top are unbeatable and the guides took generous time for photos and videos of each person or couple. Believe the difficult rating-it's well earned. This was the most strenuous hike I've done outside mountaineering and trekking. Take lots of water and sunscreen and wear shoes with good grip.
I will add this disclaimer: this is not beginner friendly and I did not do my research on the mountain before hand. I ran a marathon and would consider myself an active person, but I struggled with this hike. Now that’s out the way, the hike was challenging, but rewarding. Eduardo was AMAZING and he’s a patient person. I struggled through this entire hike, but Eduardo and his team are what helped me get through it! It was cloudy so our view was not the best, but it was a great tour! Highly recommend Eduardo and his team!!!
This is the most valuable experience and probably the best hiking tour I have ever participated. Rodrigo is the man! He makes the hard and strenuous hike totally easy and enjoyable. Super service and friendly guide. Totally worth the money and it is a must do experience in Rio. Rodrigo will help you take great and memorable photos. And believe me the view from the top is totally worth the hike! 100% recommended this hike with Rodrigo!!
Get prepared, not an easy one. But the guider is very helpful. The view is the best, but tour itself it’s challenging
This was an amazing and humbling experience 😆. The weather was perfect, we went towards the end of September. Just note that this is not an easy hike because of natural rough terrain. Be prepared to be out for 6hrs!! This is also a public area so you will encounter some locals hiking so please be mindful. The rock climbing is not hard at all, our tour guides Lucas and Eduardo are very helpful with getting everyone up safely. They were super friendly and cracking up jokes. At the top you get a breathtaking view that you cannot miss when visiting Rio. Best for adrenaline junkies lol. A must do here!
Guide is excellent, speaks good english and with good communication since booking. The activity itself is strenuous, but doable. Be physically fit and a little bit of rock climbing near the top.
Amazing!!! Our tour guide lucas and eduardo were anazing. We had a great time, great group. Definitely a more technical hike— rock climbing involved and steep inclines
