Itinerary
Meet us at Gullfoss Café and come with us for a snowmobile ride on Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. We’ll pick you up at the meeting point and drive you up to our glacier basecamp in a specially modified mountain truck, crossing rugged highland roads and open mountain scenery along the way (when visibility allows). It can already feel like an adventure before the snowmobiles even start. At our basecamp, we’ll provide all the necessary gear you need and give you a safety briefing on how to operate the snowmobile and what to keep in mind out on the glacier. Then we head off for a one-hour snowmobile ride across a wide, snowy landscape that feels a world away from everything else. We stop during the ride for photos and a chance to enjoy the views and fresh glacier air. It’s a fun and memorable way to add something special to your Golden Circle day if you have a rental car or if you're staying in the area. After the tour, we return to Gullfoss. Please arrive 10–15 minutes before departure.

Great experience w patient staff. Kids had a blast and the excursion was just the right amount of time.
Fun thing to do once in a lifetime. The staff were nice and the overall experience was fun. Although I won’t do it again. Once is enough for me.
This was SO much fun! Its a highlight of our trip our family keeps talking about! It meets in the parking lot near the waterfall. There are bathrooms there and a souvenir shop as well. The bus ride up was a bit bumpy, but it made it fun! They stop part of the way up to the glacier to gear up and have a bathroom stop. They provided all of the gear and it definitely keeper us warm and comfortable. They were great at instructing us on how to use the snowmobiles. We followed the guide around the glacier in a line with another guide at the end of the line. We were able to get off the snowmobiles before turning around and heading back to stretch our legs, walk around on the glacier, and take photos. It was such a great day would highly recommend!!
While I realize they have no control over the weather, we had no business being out there. Between the pelting rain, gusting winds and poor visibility you couldn’t see anything. Even the guide when he was giving the talk about how to work the snow mobile said we would drive for 25 minutes and then usually stop for 10 minutes to take pictures but there wouldn’t be any point doing that today since you couldn’t see anything and then drive 25 minutes back. Getting there and getting the initial equipment went smoothly but then once you and 66 of your closest strangers got off the bus, the organization ended. They had to scrounge around to find enough rain jackets to go over the bibs they give you and several of us obviously had the rain jackets on not quite right since we were wet through the jacket and the bibs by the time the ride was over. Once you were shown how to ride, there was no organization getting people to the snow mobiles and several people fell either getting to the snow mobiles or after the ride getting back to the bus because there was so much water running over the glacier from the rain making it slick. It could be a great ride, but I wouldn’t know. I would suggest waiting til you get to Iceland to make a reservation to make sure you have good weather. I’m guessing their inclement weather policy only applies to whiteouts.
Mountaineers of Iceland is staffed with very capable guides and technicians and provide a fun opportunity to ride a Snowmobile on top of a glacier (kind of cool bucket list item). They are very organized and can push through a lot of guests safely. Although the issued equipment is well used it gets the job done. Note that if expecting rain, the suits are not waterproof and your clothes underneath will get wet. The drive to the base camp and glacier is pretty and of course the actual snowmobiling fun and very simple (follow the leader no greater than 20 km/h) but enjoyable. I would add that the staff are friendly but to the point and engage only on the safety and mechanics of the tour. The glacier is an amazing phenomenon and no real discussion about Langhokull itself or even glaciers as a generality. There is an hour drive up to the glacier where there is an easy opportunity for engagement as you drive up to and then onto the glacier. Even a recording would have been nice. If you don't know much about glaciers, you will leave knowing nothing more than they are cold. That said, they are experts at providing a snowmobiling experience and we really enjoyed the scenery and the experience. Dress warm and have fun!
The person we checked in with seemed so disinterested that we wondered if our presence annoyed him. I’d say that was the overall tone of the trip. Directions were unclear, and getting our snowsuits, gloves, and helmets was chaos. The balaclavas reeked. (Maybe wash them between wears…or at all?) Basically everything about the tour was not great except the snowmobiling. The snowmobiling was amazing. I would absolutely recommend snowmobiling on a glacier, just not with that company.
Booked this at the last minute while visiting Gullfoss waterfall. We able to get a next day booking which surprised us and I am not sure if that is always the case. My wife and I are concerned about the effects of climate change on the glaciers so we asked a lot of questions about the how fast it is melting. The guide answered all the questions that we asked and provided us with a lot of good additional information. So much so that I would suggest including that type of information in the overall talk to all the participants.
Safe, fun, and adventurous. My family experienced something that really represented a unique part of Iceland.
This tour will give you a chance to ride a snowmobile on ice ( bumpy and not fun vs snow) in the summer but you should know it is zero frills. So don’t expect facts or friendliness. It gets the very basic job done and is one of the only that doesn’t charge to take kids <12 so that is a pro. If I had to do it again, would pick an actual blue glacier ( instead of gray) with snow on the south coast instead. This one is a 45 min dirt road ride away from Gulfoss. Do not feed your credit card info to buy the head gear camera info afterwards- we started seeing transactions in Italy and Singapore & had to close the card.
A 3.5 hours of extreme adrenaline, snow truck followed by one hour of snowmobile ride, weather was great, great adventure
We were excited about the tour after seeing the monster bus parked at the Gullfoss. A friendly employee told us about the trip to the 2nd largest glacier in Europe and the snow mobile experience and we were sold. However, the experience itself was pretty underwhelming. We were driven to the base, given the overalls and a crash course in snowmobile driving, some of them brokedown on the trip, they took some 15-20 minutes to fix, and then we came back.
Expensive - but we did upgrade to solo snowmobiles so we could both drive. The 2 biggest issues - First - Expect a large group. They say there is 1 guide for 6-12 snowmobiles - which is true. But, the entire group goes at once with however many guides are needed and go in a line on a specific path. We had about 20 snowmobiles and 3 guides. You go out to a specific turn around spot and have more time than necessary to take photos then you return to bus. Second- our super bus had mechanical issues. It took us much longer to get up and back than normal. We had problems with either the engine or transmission starting about 20 minutes into the ride up. We got back about 45 minutes later than planned. We did get same amount of time snowmobiling as advertised- just had quite a bit of extra time getting to and from the base area. Glacier was melting quite a bit - but still a decent ride. Guides were nice. If you’ve never been on a glacier and don’t do much snowmobiling - it’s a fun and easy way to experience being up on the glacier.
The staff were very nice. The drive to the snowmobile site was fun too! This experience was on my mom's bucket list. She is 83, so she brought me along to drive. I had never driven a snowmobile before, so I was nervous, but it was easy. It was a very fun experience that I will remember for a lifetime.
This "adventure" was quite tame. There were about 20 snow machines all in single file that traveled no faster than 5 to 10 mph. If you are looking for some excitement, this is not where you will find it.
The best part of this experience was feeling like you were on another planet. It really felt like you were immersed in Iceland and fully taking it in. The snowmobile was a little tricky to steer but the guides were great and quick to handle any situations. We are glad that we did this excursion!
Not worth $720 for 2 people to ride solo on the snowmobile going 10 mph the entire time, if that. We booked this tour thinking the initial total was 2 solo riders. As soon as we got on our own snowmobile, the guide quickly informed us that all of the bookings were passenger rides only. We asked what the upgrade was to ride solo and he said it was an additional 80 USD per person. After the tour, we were charged 200 USD for the solo rides. After reading several reviews, it seems this is a common occurrence. Very underwhelming tour all together unfortunately!! Their customer service was great - quick to respond on adjusting our booking.
Save your hard earned money! This is not a fun tour. It is literally a traffic jam on a mountain, and you never even reach above 10 mph. At the beginning your guide tells you how to lean into turns, which you never even get fast enough to have to do. On top of it just not being fun my wife and I hopped on two separate snowmobiles thinking we had each purchased an individual ride. (That’s on us). But we really wanted to each get to drive so we were told it was going to be an extra $80 for us to ride solo. Upon arrival back to base they hit us with a $200 charge for riding separate!!!! Absolutely worst experience, and feel like I was robbed
As mention in the web, snow was expected. Instead we had tour on water and ice. Don’t do it summer..
We loved the trip and it was a unique experience, especially getting stuck! We felt like we were in safe hands at all times and really enjoyed the changing scenery. The staff were pleasant. I think there was a missed opportunity because there was no information given about the landscape or the glacier, or anything else Icelandic. It is a wonderful way to experience the really rugged parts of Iceland.
Such an incredible experience to be able to snow Mobile on top of a glacier! (In the summer!) 10/10 recommend for those who want to go on an exciting adventure!
The experience of snowmobile is good and the location is great. However the staff is very adamant and non accomodative. We had booked for 7 people and 1 person was not well but they did not allow us to cancel the activity. Also the staff was playing among themselves and did not help the member for even for small round. You should do this activity with some other agency which is supportive and has good staff.
Excellent equipment/clothing they provided did the job. The staff were very friendly and gave good instruction. They were also very patient with those less competent (not me) The driving can be tiring though.
Booked with Viator. Best thing we did on our 8 day trip to Iceland. But reading the other reviews, I will say we had everything going for us: perfect weather (sunny, temps in the high 30's), everyone on time, small group (about 12 snowmobiles), and everyone driving the snowmobiles was sober and ready and willing to keep up. There were no flips or accidents on our trips. And we kept what was to me a very good pace! My husband started out driving , I was going to switch with him at the half way mark. I realized less than 3 minutes in I was too much of a scaredy cat to drive that fast so I let him drive the whole time, which I think was wise! At the end the guide complimented us and told us were were a good group: "Everybody kept up!" So the moral of the story is, don't drive if you can't keep up! It is pricey but really when are you going to have a chance to snowmobile on a glacier again? I think the length of the trip was perfect.
Great!! A wonderful experience. One hour of full running in the glacier. Our guides were the best! My granddaughter loved the experience.
Very fun experience! Highly recommend this tour. When you get up there, you can’t even see the line between sky and snow, it was all white. Very unique experience! My dad is 70 years old, and he loved it!
All was great!! The meeting point is easy to find and has free parking. We loved the experience!! They include all the equipment necessary for the weather. Very very recommended!!
Confusion from ticket—thought we bought two tickets to ride separately but had to pay EXTRA upon arrival. Frustrating miscommunication. The directions given by group snowmobile leader was brief and not explicit enough. People struggled and it limited my experience.
By far one of the coolest excursions I’ve ever done in my life! Edgar was our driver and guide and he was fantastic. Very funny and kind. We were lucky since it wasn’t a bad weather day so we got to enjoy the excursion and the beauty of the snow filled landscapes. Highly recommend this excursion if you are visiting.
Overall this was kind of eh. Edgar was awesome and made the experience better, but everyone else was pretty rude and not very welcoming. It’s also really expensive for what it is. I felt kinda nauseous during the ride which didn’t help, and overall I just don’t think it was worth the money.
Amazing experience, beautiful once in a lifetime views and Edgar was an excellent guide.
Extraordinary! An amazing experience!
If you’re even remotely considering snowmobiling, just do it—and if you can, ask for Edgar as your guide. From the start, Edgar set the tone with a perfect balance of professionalism and personality. He made sure everyone felt confident and safe before we even touched the throttle, walking us through the basics in a way that was clear, efficient, and (thankfully) not overly complicated. Once we got moving, the experience went from “this is fun” to “this is unforgettable.” The terrain was incredible—wide open stretches, scenic trails, and just enough adrenaline to make you feel like you knew what you were doing (even if you didn’t). Edgar paced the tour perfectly, giving us room to enjoy the ride while keeping the group aligned and safe. What really stood out, though, was Edgar himself. He was attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without overloading us, and had a great sense of humor that kept the energy high the entire time. You could tell he genuinely enjoys what he does—and that made the whole experience that much better. Net-net: top-tier experience, exceptional guide, and absolutely worth it. Would book again in a heartbeat.
This was a super fun activity! We met in Gullfoss and had a transfer to the glacier. There they provide you all the gear and give you a brief explanation on the snowmobile and how to work it (very simple). We then drove, stopped half way in case we wanted to swap drivers, took a few pictures and then drove back. It was very well organised and a great addition to our Iceland trip! Definitely recommend
The transfer to the glacier is an hour, very bumpy and we had low cloud, so could see very little. If you are not a good traveller, worth noting! You are provided with all the clothing, so nice and warm. You follow the guide in a row, so it is limited and slow! Overall, a little disappointing for the cost
Meeting point was easy find. Driver was very friendly and informative. Snowmobiling was amazing! This is my second time and it still amazes me!
This tour is WAY over-priced for what you get. The full itinerary is actually: meet at Gullfoss to pack into an oversized 4x4 bus. Once underway, they drive you 45-50 minutes to the starting point. Spend about 10 minutes getting suited up, another 10 minutes with snowmobile operating instructions, then head out in a single file line on the snowmobiles never doing more than 30km/h (most of the time spent at about 20 kph) for about 20 minutes. They then give you about 8-10 minutes off the snowmobile to fool around in the snow (not driving the snowmobiles, but on foot), then 20 minutes slowly driving back to the starting point. Undress, load back into the 4x4 bus and 45-50 minute bus ride back to Gullfoss. So you lose about 3-4 hours of your day just to slowly drive a snowmobile at jogging speed in a single file line. There are 60-70 people per bus, so imagine trying to keep everyone in a single file line while going at a slow 20 kph pace. It was 20 minutes of go slow...stop, wait for everyone to pack tight...go slow...stop....repeat. Definitely not worth $260.
1) The windows on the bus were absolutely filthy so we our views were very restricted. That was a huge bummer since we were on the bus for roughly half of the tour time. It was particularly frustrating because we saw the bus sitting in the Gulfoss parking lot for half an hour before we departed. There was no reason the windows couldn't have been cleaned during that time. 2) Equipment must not be checked often enough because I got a helmet with a visor that wouldn't stay up. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that until we were already on the snowmobiles. It was a safety hazard because I couldn't see through the visor due to the snow. I talked to guide at the halfway point and he did give me a set a goggles to help keep the visor up, but I was basically driving blind for the first half of the row (25 minutes). 3) The guide had said that if we were having problems to stop our machine and wave our arms. Somebody was actually thrown from one of the snowmobiles ahead of me, and the guide did stop at that point. Once he had that person sorted out, I tried waving my arms to get his attention (about not being able to see) but he must not have seen me and resumed the ride. What if something more serious had happened to me? (Btw, the person that was thrown was ok but left limping.) 4) I'm guessing the reason the guide didn't see me is because we had near white-out conditions during the ride. It was snowing like crazy on a snow-covered glacier. As I said before, the snow iced up the visors - making them a hazard rather than a help. Without the visor, the snow blew into our eyes. Even peeking through our eyelashes, we could only see a few feet in front of us. It was really, really scary. 5) I don't know anything about snowmobile s but I suspect these might have been budget machines. They jerked from side to side instead of moving forward smoothly and they required a lot of hand strength. Long story short: If you can find another company to take you snowmobiling on a glacier then you should. If Mountaineers of Iceland is your only option, then check your equipment before leaving base camp rather than relying on them to guarantee it's functional and try to get in line right behind your guide so you can get him attention easily.
An incredibly fun ride through such a beautiful place! The snowmobiles were in great condition and easy to operate.
One of our favorite experiences in Iceland. The glacier feels like another planet and zooming around on the snow mobiles is such a fun and unique experience. If you book for two you will share a snow mobiles but you get the opportunity to sway halfway, which also gives you both a turn to look around and enjoy the surroundings.
It was an amazing experience for us to have together in Iceland, the price was good for the activities that it included. The staff was also really good, our tour guide was Edgar, very nice guy.
The trip was incredible and I really enjoyed the whole experience! Our original time got cancelled due to weather warnings but the team were very helpful at resolving this and offering the earlier slot. We did get stuck out in the snow for a while but this was bound to happen with the weather conditions and we all got back safely and only around an hour and a half later than expected.
We had such an amazing time on this tour! Our guide Edgar was so awesome and made the trip even better. You are provided with all the necessary gear, and given a quick lesson on how to drive the snowmobiles. There is definitely a learning curve for getting the hang of driving, but if you like adrenaline and adventure, this is the perfect experience for you!
Langjokull Glacier was stunning! Snowmobiling was great fun! Well organised, all equipment provided. Lots of guides so really safe. Fantastic experience and amazing views! Highly recommend.
Fantastic, really well run trip, everyone involved was very nice and helpful, would definitely use them again for another trip
It delivers everything promised and children loved it. Would definitely repeat trip with other members of family.
A good experience that was 100% worth doing. I liked being in a big group. The staff were very attentive and cared for safety. Was a friendly, efficient team. I drove that was quite hard and uncomfortable on the way to the glacier as we went slowly. My partner who sat behind me enjoyed this part. We stopped at the glacier for photos. On the way back we were quicker so it was more fun and easier to drive, my partner didnt enjoy this so much as it was bumpy and she was holding on for dear life! All in all, worth the experience, just be aware its not the most easy/comfortable experience!
Was a great once in a lifetime experience. The guides were professional and friendly. They made us feel safe with them. However I seriously underestimated how difficult the snowmobiles were to manage. Upper body strength is a requirement to handle the machine. I was totally drained at the end of the ride.
Disappointing experience! The actual snowmobiling was less than an hour. The group was simply too big (40 at a time). Very slow procession of less than 20kph, the heated grips on our bike didn’t work. Compared to previously snowmobiling in Finland and Sweden this comparison was very poor.
Transfer vehicle filled to capacity for a long uncomfortable journey. Ended up on back row with 6 other people. Had to sit forward all journey (unable to fasten seatbelt as no room to do so) just to make room for all to be seated. Experience good but could have been better experience with faster speeds on snowmobiles and a lot less people involved
