We booked this tour after arriving to Iceland and we had an amazing time! Tour guide was awesome, friendly, very informative, and made sure we all stayed safe and well. We hiked across the glacier down to the ice caves and saw amazing landscapes and scenery. Definitely was a 10 out of 10 and can’t wait to come back!

Itinerary
The Vatnajökull Glacier tour lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on weather conditions and cave location. Each ice cave is naturally formed, so their shape and position change with the seasons. Your safety is the top priority. Guides carefully select the best and safest ice cave for each tour. The drive and hike to the cave may vary daily based on accessibility and weather.
This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore a stunning ice cave within Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. If you're looking to capture or photograph the brilliant blue crystal colors of the ice, this experience is highly recommended. On the way from Jökulsárlón, you may witness breathtaking glacier landscapes, snow-covered mountains, and sweeping views of Iceland’s dramatic south coast.
On the short drive between Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the glacier, we pass by Diamond Beach (Fellsfjara) — a black sand beach where icebergs from the lagoon wash ashore and glitter against the dark volcanic sand.

Slight walk to caves but unbelievable experience Guides were very knowledgeable. Plenty on great picture opportunities
A great experience to see Mother Nature’s beautiful work! A bit of a hike to cave. Not for those who cannot walk far or over very rocky terrain.
An incredible experience, our guide Laura was fantastic, really welcoming and funny, incredibly knowledgeable and really loved her job, took time to explain everything and waited for quiet moments to take the best photos and get osrts of the cave to ourselves, we had an amazing time and would highly recommend this company. All tours are relatively expensive because Iceland is an expensive country, but this tour was well worth it, took 3 hours and included a decent walk to the cave and plenty of time inside it, we were not rushed at all. Thank you Glacier Trips and Laura!
It was raining heavily on the day of my hike, however, our fantastic guide did not let that sour the mood! He was very knowledgeable and friendly and took some amazing pictures for us. It was a great experience!
From the very first moment I contacted Glacier Trips, I felt such a wonderful energy and knew we were in good hands. And after our experience, I can say that feeling was absolutely right! Lucy was our guide, welcoming me and my group of photographer friends, and she was simply amazing. We were the first ones to arrive, which allowed us to experience this incredible place in complete peace and quiet, something truly special for us as photographers. Lucy was so warm, kind, and enthusiastic, explaining everything beautifully and making sure we enjoyed every moment. She made the whole experience unforgettable and gave us one of the most special memories of our time in Iceland. A huge thank you to Lucy for her kindness and wonderful energy, and to Sindri as well for being so lovely and helpful from the very beginning. It was a pleasure! I couldn’t recommend Glacier Trips more. If you’re looking for a truly special experience with a team that genuinely cares, this is the one! 💙
Very nice tour guide, smooth trek, but misleading photos/ info. Wish there was a bit of a warning about the ice cave coloring (black ice vs blue transparent). But enjoyed the experience regardless.
What a fantastic day! After several days of rain, the sun finally came out, making our Blue Ice Cave adventure even more magical. A huge thank you to our guide, Harvie. He was patient, professional, and clearly passionate about what he does. He shared lots of interesting information, looked after everyone in the group, and made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the tour. The entire 6-hour experience exceeded our expectations and was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a better day. Highly recommend this tour and especially Harvie!
Truly magical experience with otherworldly lighting and formations. Our pictures came out amazing!
INCREDIBLE, felt like being in space, and the guide was great, wish we had done an even longer tour.
Amazing tour! Amazing tour guide Alex, who even included awesome pictures which he took from us. Also very good guide with kids. All off the approximately 199 questions were patiently answered. We went with kids and grandparents and highly recommend the tour! Thanks again!
The ice changes every year. So you are not going to a place that looks like these photos at alll (at least for 2026). The guide was great, but the first thing they tell you when you get to the ice and you won’t see any large caves like you see in their photos of the tour. So they are well aware it is misrepresented. I’ve never been on a trip through Viator that has had such misleading photos/expectations given. That being said, I still would have gone to see the small ice caves that are there. Just not a fan of the misrepresentation. If the photo were accurate it would have been 5/5 stars.
You can only access the glacier with a certified operator, so this was our option to go. The drive was fascinating in itself and it was fun to see the ice caves. It would have been nice with a little more info and tour guiding
We had a very nice tour with our guide Alex. It is not one big cave, but a couple of smaler ones, which was nevertheless amazing. There are a whole lot of companies doing the exact same tour. - I loved "Glacier Trips" because they're only doing small groups. We were 10, which was perfect! Thanks again for the great experience!
Our tour guide was so fun and knowledgeable. We were lucky it was good weather and less crowded. He was very adamant to make sure everyone gets a turn in each area and not one person hogging it for pictures. Everyone had reasonable timing for each section to admire and take photos. Spikes for the shoes were provided and the ride to the glacier wasn’t long
The ice cave tour was a great adventure and the experience of the holiday. It will be difficult to forget the power and impact of being in the ice and the colour of the light through the 1000 year old ice. We didnt expect the bone shaking trip out to the ice, but the children in the car with us we laughing all the way in the impromtu rollercoaster. Will do if again if we get back to the region.
While it says this is a small group tour (there were 16 people in our group), we ended up at the caves with many other groups from other companies. The problem is that there was a lot of standing and waiting instead of exploring. The wind on the glacier is very cold and while the guide was interesting, the majority of our time was spent standing still and listening to him. It’s cold when you aren’t moving and most of the caves were no longer caves, just some holes. We explored about 10 minutes of the 2.5 hours. While it was cool to see, I would not go again due to all the down time standing.
Really enjoyed our first visit to an ice cave. Laura was a great guide providing the right balance of education and giving us time to explore the caves. Would definitely recommend finding time to due this when in Iceland as it was a highlight of our trip.
Best experience in Iceland!! Pro: Small group (8 peoples) and we went to 4 spots totally ( don’t have too much rest time but that’s what we want haha and the guide will keep check everyone’s condition). Highly recommended this tour!!! Thank you Steve!!!!!
Was very informational and efficient. Had a great time seeing the wonders of nature and what it can provide
Its a very interesting trip. Everyone should do it to see the affects of climate change. Its amazing how fast the glacier is receeding.
Wandering through ice caves is a unique experience! Alex, our guide, was very knowledgeable and provided lots of info about how thick the ice is and how it was formed. He took great pictures as well. We went on a very rainy day and we were soaked but still had a great time wandering the caves! the equipment they provide keeps you very safe walking on the ice. I am very clumsy and did just fine. One note of caution: I put the parking lot name into Google maps and it took us to the wrong parking lot. We figured it out in time but we were almost late. We saw a few others have the same issue so just want to note that you want the big parkoing lot with the bathrooms.
We had a fantastic experience on our ice cave tour. The timing of the tour meant we avoided masses of other groups and our guide kept things moving so we weren't standing around too long in the cold winds. Ice caves were spectacular and we had ample time to explore and take photographs. The tour guide was fun and the tour was well organised.
Our guide Laura was a lot of fun, informative and kept us safe. The caves were absolutely beautiful. We were fortunate with lovely weather. Our group was 12 people.
Alex was our good and was very good. We expected a brighter blue and more walking in caves. It was more like walking in cubby holes.
Super expérience with Laura and « Foulzy »(Mr paradise); going with them was so easy and they make you feel like we knew each other’s for years! I will Highly recommend !
The tour was wonderful, the views were beautiful, and the guide was wonderful, even with my limited English. Everything was understandable and explained wonderfully. I highly recommend it. I love small, local businesses like this; they're great. I highly recommend it!
One of the best tour I’ve ever had. We booked the 6-hour Blue Ice Cave tour. Although the weather was very bad that day, our tour guide, Steinar, was extremely considerate and did his best to adjust the route so we could still visit several blue ice caves under relatively safer conditions. Steinar gave clear and thorough explanations of the safety rules and constantly looked out for everyone during the glacier hike, which made us feel very safe and well cared for. His professionalism and responsibility truly stood out. I would highly recommend this tour. Hiking on the glacier and exploring the blue ice caves was an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it made me truly appreciate how incredible and powerful our Earth is.
This was a great experience! It's the 3rd time I've been to Iceland and the first time I've been able to do an ice cave tour, due to rain. It did not disappoint! Our guide Laura was WONDERFUL and explained the ice caves well. Apparently most people expect massive caves you can walk through, but they vary greatly every season due to rain and melting. They have to seek out new, safe caves every few weeks to take tourists through. We had an excellent time navigating some of the new ones with Laura's help, and got some amazing photos. Would go again! Thanks Laura! :)
WOWOWOWOW!! Absolutely unforgettable experience that I cannot recommend enough! Stefan was an amazing guide! He taught us so much about the local area, geology, and glacier, which only enhanced the already stellar experience of hiking on the glacier. The landscape was surreal and incredibly beautiful- we'd never seen anything like it! Run, don't walk, to sign up for this experience!
This small group cave tour was definitely a 5 out of 5 experience. Highly recommend. Our tour guide, Laura, was informative, funny, and very knowledgeable about the glacier and ice caves in general. The small group allowed for a more personal experience. So glad we took this tour.
This was truly an amazing experience, from the ride over to the glacier, the walking to the ice caves and then the experience of being inside them! The guides where really great, a good laugh and made the trip really memorable! Thank you
It was wonderful. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, engaging and entertaining! We would do again!
This ice cave tour was a highlight of our trip and we had such an incredible time. Our guide was super chill, informative, patient and fun which made the experience very very enjoyable. There are lots of tour guide services offering ice cave tours but we consider Glacier Trips to be the best based on the quality of the guides and overall experience.
We had a very good time exploring various crevasses and caves on the glacier. The guide was very personable, humorous, and attentive to some of the party that required extra help. We had ample time to take pictures, and the guide took pictures of everyone in the group when asked. Overall, a good value for the money.
This was one of our bucket list items in Iceland and it lived up to its reputation. Alex our guide was knowledgeable and guided us into a cave only being looked at for the second day . He knew the area well and the ice caves and the photos he took of my husband and I are amazing and captured the blue I was hoping for. Small group meant it was much more special and we even went back to one of the caves for a second time. That is what you get with an amazing small tour and the great knowledge of glacier trips. Thanks
Alex was an amazing tour guide! He was able to show us a newly constructed ice cave and was able to take great pictures for us! 10/10 (:
This tour was SO much fun and we were so happy to have done it while on the southern coast of Iceland. The company was super flexible with rescheduling because I was a bit under the weather, and it ended up being super fun. They supplied crampons, which were incredible (I ended up buying a pair when we got home lol) and the vehicle that they used to get there was really cool. The glaciers were absolutely gorgeous, and our tour guide was the nicest. He even helped everyone get some awesome photos. If you are on the fence, do it! Who knows how long the glaciers will be around
Great experience overall! Alex was very knowledgeable and helpful. He made us feel safe but still have fun.
Steiner (sp?) was a great guide taking us on the glacier walk and into crevices. Unfortunately, we could not go into the ice cave as it had been flooded that week. I realize the excursion would have been even better but it is what it is. In the winter months, I’d go earlier than later. Our daughter went at 2:30 and due to large/slow groups ahead of them, they missed out on some sights. I’d recommend Glacier Trips to anyone.
The weather was not cooperative. It had been raining and the main cave was flooded. Thankfully, there was another smaller cave that we were able to visit. The trip there and back was interesting. We enjoyed the landscape. The guide was friendly and gave us interesting facts about the vast glacier and how the caves are formed.
Our guide was very good. He explained everything pretty well and helped us to take photos at various locations inside the cave. He explained about the vatna national park and other things about the area. He even helped us by suggesting places we could also visit on the same day after the cave walk.
Our trip to Iceland was absolutely breathtaking, and our tour with Glacier Trips was truly the cherry on top! Our guide was wonderful—knowledgeable, warm, and full of fascinating stories about Iceland and its glaciers. It felt as if we were exploring with an old Icelandic friend, and we loved every moment. The car was comfortable, the equipment top-notch, and the ice cave itself was a dream come true. We did the tour on my mother’s birthday, and the celebratory songs and joy made it even more special. And to top it all off, we saw the Northern Lights that same evening. A perfect day from start to finish. Thank you, Glacier Trips. We recommend you from the bottom of our hearts!
We are lucky to meet a very cute and fun tour guide Laura. The tour itself was efficient and informative. Everything went smoothly and beyond our expectation. Will definitely recommend this tour to others who want to have an efficient exploration of the Glacier and ice cave.
Wonderful experience, both my friend and I highly recommend it and we will surely book again with this company for a summer trip!
Fantastic experience and amazing ice cave and glacier. Steinar was a great guide, very easy going and friendly, extremely knowledgeable.
Better than expected. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable and we enjoyed the entire trip, including the ride to the cave.
We had such a fun time on our ice cave tour with our guide Laura! She was able to explain to us how the caves form, give us some insight into the blue color we see, etc. I hadn’t realized before our tour that the caves are constantly changing so they are always finding new caves and making sure they are safe for the tours. I really appreciated that they had been monitoring crowds and changed our departure time so we had more privacy in the caves without being packed in with a bunch of other groups.
Guide was very helpful and understanding under time pressure. Gave us the best experience possible. Took us to a deep ice crevice rather than a "cave", because it was too early in the season for good caves.
Walking on a glacier and exploring stunning blue ice caves with an expert guide is an unforgettable experience. Opting for a longer tour guarantees a richer, more immersive adventure!
