Itinerary
The location of Silfra, where the snorkeling takes place, is within Thingvellir National park. Passengers, while driving through, get a chance to view some of the beautiful nature the national park has to offer.
Heading out from your Reykjavík accommodation to Silfra takes about 45 minutes. After greeting your certified guide upon arrival, you'll gear up, listen to a safety overview, and head into the glacially flooded fissure known as Silfra. You'll spend around 30–40 minutes in the water before exiting and walking back around 5 minutes walk. You'll then get a chance of warming up with a well earned hot chocolate. We’ll take photos during the snorkeling. Typically 40–100 images, depending on group size and skill level. The photos will be available for download a few days later free of charge. For the drysuit option, Please bring your own one thermal base-layer. We recommend bringing thick (preferably wool) socks to help keep your feet warm while snorkeling. We’re the only company offering both wetsuit and drysuit options. This means members of your group can book in wetsuits or drysuits and you will still be in the same group in the water.
Silfra fissure is often considered one of the top diving or snorkeling locations worldwide. This is due to the unique in-water visibility due the pristine glacier water that has been filtering through lava fields for many decades. Average in-water visibility is +100m/+300ft. Many say that snorkeling in Silfra feels like flying due to the clear glacial water. Feel thirsty on the way? No worries, just take a sip as the water in Silfra might even be more pure and better than the top shelf bottled water you would buy back home. Thingvellir National Park, where Silfra is situated, is where two tectonic plates meet with around 6-7km/4miles gab between the two. Snorkeling in Silfra therefore means you are snorkeling between two tectonic plates.

Dory was the best! She helped us get ready and took us out snorkeling. It was very cold, but amazingly clear.
Was not as cold as I would have expected. The dive master ensured we were safe and snug in the dry suit.
One of the most thrilling and exhilarating things to do in Iceland.
Dory was the best and was able to calm my nerves so I didn’t back down from the experience! Her humor and calm demeanor helped make it a wonderful time!❤️
Our guide Doris was amazing!!! She truly made the experience worth it 🩷
Dory was awesome and made everything run smoothly! Such a cool experience!
This was such a cool experience! Anil was a great guide and made sure everything was fun and informative. Our group all did drysuits but there is the option for wetsuits (why on earth someone would do that in 35 degree water is beyond me!). It was COLD even dry. But worth it! I look crazy in the GoPro pics but that’s my fault haha
Fabulous experience and Doris was great teaching us what to do, keeping us safe, and taking pictures too.
This experience is once in a lifetime! Our guide Ines really made this adventure an incredible one. My mother, who can sometimes feel claustrophobic, was very nervous about this activity. Ines made her feel safe and kept reassuring her she’s okay, she can breathe, and that she’s keeping an eye on her. My mom did the entire snorkeling activity in the drysuit! It was such a special experience for all of us and I’m so happy my mom felt safe enough to complete it with us. Ines took great pictures and was very communicative during the entire snorkeling activity. She made this experience more than worth it. We even got to see an arctic char during our swim which apparently is pretty rare this time of year! I would highly recommend this activity and keep your fingers crossed you get Ines!! 🤩 We will definitely be back.
Great experience! Our guide was patient and knowledgable. I had a great time, the water was as cold as expected and learning the right way to swim was a little challenging at first. The drysuit definitely made the cold water bearable that I hardly noticed except for my skin that was actually touching the water. The algae was so cool to see and the water was unbelievably clear.
It was really good experience. I really had a great time snorkeling at Silfra. It was cold but still bearable. The dry suit was uncomfortable at first but you get used to it soon. With the dry suit, only your hand and face will be in contact with water. But you will wear thick gloves so if you want to rent the go pro make sure you can handle it. Our guide, Kaya, she is really nice and helpful. And also the hot chocolate after the snorkeling was really delicious. It was an experience once of a lifetime and I made really good memories
Our Guide was fantastic! She kept a close watch over me because I am older than the rest of the group. Although we wore dry suits I was surprised I would still feel cold. The water was crystal clear.
Snorkelling between the tectonic plates was such a unique experience and definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. Dory was a brilliant guide and made the whole experience really enjoyable from start to finish. He was friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel completely comfortable throughout the tour.
this was an experience that is hard to put into words. I would highly recommend doing this at least once. The guides who dress you work well together and are very good about explaining everything and during the snorkling are make sure to check in with you during the entire time. They are on top of everyting going on and make you feel very comfortable with the entire process.
Being a lover of water, I just had experience snorkeling between the tectonic plates. I was a little concerned about the water temperature (2-4°C), but needn't to have worried as the drysuits etc kept me fantastically warm. Our Adventure Vikings guide, Anil, was professional, but friendly putting us all at ease whilst ensuring our safety and comfort at all times. The water is so pure you can drink it and so clear you can see way, way into the depths. A fantastic experience, highly recommend.
This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and it lived up to all expectations. Take waterproofs and hats and gloves and wear two pairs of socks.
It was a really cool experience! Floating through the Silfra was magical. Clearest water, interesting underwater world, changing depth and we were lucky and had sunny weather, which made it even nicer. Pick Up was well organised and very friendly. Dory was our snorkle guide, she explained everything we needed to know very well and always kept an eye on whether everything was okay. And she put us in and out of the dry suit. We felt safe all the time. Would totally recommend!
It’s not actually as cold as you might think, the Dry Suits keep you reasonably warm(ish). Absolutely GREAT !
There is no color to be seen, just rocks with a little bit of seaweed/grass tendrils. I was surprised that there were places just barely deep enough for my body to pass over the rocks and then there would be a deep hole! I wore 4 pairs of wool socks and my feet were not cold; a medium and heavy thermal lower underwear and 2 medium base layers and 1 heavy base layer undershirts and I was not cold. My hands were not cold, either, which surprised me. The gloves are semi permeable, allowing water in which is warmed by your hands. There was lots of help getting into the dry suit - I put mine on backwards to begin with 🤣🥴. The walk to the entrance point wasn't a problem even waddling with the dry suit. I didn't linger in the lagoon at the end as I became aware of my face being cold. Coming back from exit carrying my fins required more effort, but I was sick with a cold and had little energy anyway. I had a little difficulty with water seeping into my mask and was shown how to correct that. Near the end I had a little water in my snorkle, rolled over and signaled the guide, Arnil, who came immediately to help me. Going at 9am avoided the crowds and pressure to go through the fissure quickly! Stripping down to thermals and putting on the provided onesie was a little odd in mixed company and no problem as I didn't put on my 3 extra layers of wool socks until then. I can't have the hot chocolate and they had hot herbal tea for me, perfect! After redressing I walked back to the entrance point and there were several groups waiting to go in. So glad I went on the 9am trip. We were first to go in. Even waiting for our driver to return from Reykjavik, we were back in Reykjavik by 1. Our driver, Greter, told us all about the history of the fissure and Parliament on our drive to the fissure entrance area. We had to walk from Parking area 5 to the snorkel site; and back after our snorkle. There is a church and hill climb one can do. I saw 2 spotted trout in the brook before the parking area. There are WCs at both the parking area and the snorkel staging site. Your belongings are left in the changing van, which is open.
Great day in Iceland ! What a great experience
Dorry is a legend and the hot choccy was awesome to end
What are you waiting for to have this experience? I believe in trying everything the world has to offer, and this experience was unique—I would do it a thousand times over. I want to thank my guide, Louis, he was fantastic, professional, fun, and incredibly attentive to my every need, especially when I ran into a minor issue with my wetsuit. The water is crystal clear, allowing you to see every color and nuance. Places that make you feel truly alive and steal your heart.

Was absolutely beautiful and Luis our guide just made it that much more enjoyable. Dry suits worked admirably and with the exception of a cold face, all the rest was totally OK.
Wonderful experience. Luis our guide and instructor was wonderful . Helped guide, set us up and it was well worth the experience
Excellent experience. I never felt cold. I felt very comfortable with our dive master, Dori. The facilities are reasonable and what a phenomenal site.
Amazing tour, beautiful place, good vibes and nice smile from Inès. Choose her, she's the best.
Fantastic. A bit of a wait in full gear (dry suit, hood, gloves, etc). But super organized and a lot of fun! Lewis was fantastic!!
The entire snorkeling experience was wonderful. The pick up was smooth. The dive masters were great.
Wear your own woolen merino thermals. They will give you a onesie over the thermals and under the dry suit. You don’t need to bring anything else except a change of clothes in case your dry suit leaks. Listen to all the instructions to be able to get the most out of the experience and not get told off for not doing the right thing. Great being able to see a long way down into the fissure and the algae growing on the rocks. The cold is not really a problem except for your lips and hands. Wonderful experience.
This was a fantastic once in a lifetime experience. I highly recommend it. Our guide, Lucas, was really patient and available whenever needed. Half the experience is putting on the dry suit, quite a production. The water was so clear, visibility was amazing! With the wet suit I never felt cold in the water and stayed dry other than my hair. Even my face never felt cold, I was too busy admiring the scenery to ever feel cold.
I had such an amazing afternoon snorkelling at Silfra with Ines. She was a fantastic guide. She made sure I felt comfortable the whole time. She also made sure I was aware of different points of interest under the water and also shared lots of interesting facts about the National Park. The suits were also really cool, I was surprised how warm and dry I stayed under the water. It was a really unique experience and a lot of fun.
What a cool experience! Snorkeling between the tectonic plates in crystal clear water was amazing. We were literally taking our snorkels out of our mouths so that we could drink the water. The hot chocolate after our dry suit experience was a nice touch. We struggled with the dry suits a little (the neck, hood, and wrist are very tight!!). Our guide was not super gentle and I ended up with a black and blued hand from the wrist piece snapping on my hand when the guide tried to pull it off my hand. Similarly, my daughter’s head got stuck in the hood while trying to remove it. I think if our driver and guide were more personable and chatty we would have given it 5 stars, but they were not overly friendly. All in all would still recommend the excursion as it is a once in a lifetime experience.
Had fun with Dora on this trip. Beautiful scenery and great experience! 😊
Usually I travel with my partner but he had to leave Iceland early so I booked this tour solo. Was it cold? Yes! But this was so special. I have never seen water that clear. The guide was great and hey who can say they were swimming between two tectonic plates?! ME!
Excellent guide! Ines from Belgium!
Great experience. Clear waters. THe suit made sure I was not wet or cold. But the face will contact water and fingers may feel a bit cold but not too cold. MAke sure you know to swim, and even better if you have snorkelled before.
I really liked this experience. The dry-suit was in good condition and did not leak. The water was very cold, but crystal clear and very pretty. It was a very unique experience and highly recommended. The guides were well organized and very attentive. The tour company was very accommodating because they provided a pickup for my mom, who wanted to come along, but did not want to snorkel.
From pick up to drop off, this tour operator was on top. On time, clean van, very nice driver . But on top off it, what a cool experience to snorkel this clear glacier water in a unique scenery with the best diver guide, Ines!! She is so very nice, funny and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this unforgettable moment. Bisou du Québec ! Elise et Alix
Amazing adventure. WAUW! What a great tour from Doris. Super service, to provide the underwater photo's.
Louis was an amazing guide! The experience as a whole was shorter than anticipated but it was very cool.
Silfra was amazing. Water clarity is perfect. Feels like you are in another world. Our guide was excellent! She explained everything clearly and made the experience low stress and very enjoyable. The dry suits worked perfect and although your hands and head get wet the gloves and head gear make it bearable.
What a wonderful and beautiful experience with the best guide ever! Thank you Ines for making everybody feel safe.
I’ve snorkeled all over the world and this was unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I was afraid I’d be too cold to enjoy it, but as soon as I saw the incredible underwater views I forgot all about how cold my face was! Bucket list item complete and it exceeded my expectations. Smooth pick up and our guide Luis was wonderfully kind and patient with everyone in our group. I can’t wait to see the photos!!
We had a wonderful time! An experience for a lifetime. Our guide Ines was really interesting, accommodating, explained everything to us in detail, and made us feel safe and relaxed with her. Because of the dry suits, we didn't feel cold at all. Wonderful, wonderful! Highly recommended.
The dive was amazing and Arthur (English name) was great! Only issue was you had to wait over an hour for your return trip back but the bus and drive were good.
What an amazing expérience ! Dory was really carefull and patient to give us the best and safest experience.
Dory was amazing, super lovely and a great guide. Felt very informed and safe for the whole duration of the experience. The hot chocolate was also a really nice finish. Thanks dory!!!
Incredible experience, absolutely loved it and felt very safe and supported
