Reykjavik Erupts had a flawless and flexible organisation, gathering 4 people arriving from 4 countries right at the airport for a first 1-day trip, original and full of meaning. Our guide Jakob showed the beuty of the nature and answered our many questions on Iceland society. We have left amazed and aware of what iceland can bring to Europe.

Last day of vacation and treated myself to a private day tour with @reykjavikerupts Dofri took us to many different places to experience the Peninsula as a "local" saw Icelandic Horses, breathe taking views that photos cannot do justice to, a little surprise visit, stories, the viking museum with the boat that sailed from Iceland to NYC, the best lobster soup I have ever had, the iconic church with a sweet treat, saw the power of lava and saw some froma distance, had a little arctic fox cross in front of us on a highway (they are gorgeous), and wonderful tales that left me wanting to google more! #explore #adventures #selfcare #thistimeichoosemyself #iceland #shoplocal
I really enjoyed Dofri Hermannsson’s guiding style. I’ve seen many guides through my experience in tourism, and it’s clear that Dofri truly loves what he does. He puts his heart into his work, genuinely enjoys being around people and shares stories about his land with great enthusiasm – I highly recommend him!
This was a great tour and day with Dofri on the Reykjanes Peninsula. He is entertaining and tells great stories about the area. He is very knowledgeable and we learned so much about the area. We were going to have him tour the Snaefellsnes Peninsula but the weather did not cooperate. Next time we are in Iceland we will be calling him for our tours.
This was the first of three tours I did with Dofri and Reykjavik Erupts. I am going to write separate reviews for both of those tours as well. I need to mention that due to the eruption of Fagradalsfjall, much of what we would normally see on this tour was not accessible. So Dofri had to improvise, and he was a master at presenting the perfect first day in Iceland. He picked us up at the airport and brought us to a local coffee shop for one of the best cups of coffee I've had in a while. It was a local place, not a touristy spot. I knew right then I picked the right guide, one who would provide a real feel for Iceland. We first visited Kleifarvatn Lake and then Krýsuvík/Seltún. Dofri gave us a wonderful explanation of the geology behind what was happening in the area and pushed mom in her wheelchair and kept her company at Krýsuvík so I could explore a little more. He gave us a break in his tour to drop us off at Sky Lagoon where mom and I were able to get over our jet lag a little before continuing on. When Dofri picked us up, much to our delight, and per our request, he brought his wonderful dogs Hneta and Kvika! They are such well-behaved dogs and smart too (one is a retired search and rescue dog)! Dofri talked about his horses too and invited us to see them, which we did: real Icelandic horses. We got to feed them a little snack while we were there. I bet that's a treat you don't get on most tours. My mom said she loved the scenery and the lagoon, but the horses were her highlight of the day. I don't know that I can pick a highlight; I loved it all so much. After we met the horses, Dofri gave us a tour of Reykjavik and gave us some tips to enjoy the city. But this was our first day in Iceland, we were jet-lagged, and tired. So he brought us to our hotel and we agreed to meet the next day for our Golden Circle tour. I highly recommend this company and Dofri in particular to everyone who wants to book a private tour in Iceland. I booked a private guide because I brought my elderly mom with me on a short trip to Iceland and I knew private tours would be best considering our limited time and her mobility issues. Dofri made sure our Iceland experience was priceless. Please see my other reviews (Golden Circle and South Coast) for more information about Reykjavik Erupts. I fully plan to go back to Iceland in the future, and I will be sure to book Reykjavik Erupts again when I do.
Dofri was a fantastic local guide, very responsive and flexible as we adjusted our plans around the weather and the whims of lava flows. We had a great day hiking in the Reykjanes peninsula and driving to some of the geothermal active areas. The perfect way to kick off our Iceland adventure.
We spent a magical day with Gylfi, touring the active volcano and the surrounding area. How fortunate we were to see the earth perform in this spectacular fashion. How fortunate we were to have had such an excellent tour guide.
This was one of the most fun private tours we did because of how engaging and knowledgeable our guide Dofri was. He kept us entertained with trivia, hilarious anecdotes and detailed information about the beautiful sights we saw. The different landscapes we drove and walked through were surreal, and the food we had in a small fishing village was delicious. Dofri went out of his way to make this a personalised and memorable experience for us and we are so thankful for that! Can't wait to do another tour the next time we're in Iceland.
What an AMAZING experience! Dofri is an excellent guide with so much knowledge, and a genuine interest in geology. If you have any interest in volcanoes, this is THE tour for you. Small groups make a better experience, hands down!
I had some scheduling issues that I worked out with Dofri before I arrived and the day of my tour we both had even more schedule issues. But we worked out what worked for both of us. He met me exactly on time and got me to my airport drop off exactly when he said he would. The tour itself was great. I am a geologist and had only a half day so this worked great. I was able to see a lot in a short time. I highly recommend this tour if you don’t have a lot of time. Dofri is an excellent guide and with a small group it’s much easier to accommodate your own interests.
We had scheduled several quite long and demanding tours and were looking for a way to relax but still see more of Iceland in a less hectic manner. This was exactly what we were looking for. The tour started at the Volcano house that gave a lot of background on the volcanic history of Iceland. From there were were picked up by Finn in a Land Rover. While there were only two in our tour, the maximum would be maybe 5 so it is a very individualized tour whose pace is your pace. The drive took us to the volcanic area in the Reykjavic Peninsula. This is a protected and almost pristine area. We drank water directly from a glacier fed lake, visited hot springs and enjoyed panoramic vistas. The one on one with the tour guide provided a great opportunity to ask all the questions that had been in my mind, not only about volcanos and hot springs but Iceland itself. This was well done and worth it.
This trip was amazing! Even though it rained during the whole tour, we got an amazing experience. It was not far to hike and the tour-guide was very good, funny and had a lot of knowledge.
Thanks to Finn for an excellent half-day lava fields tour! My son & I wanted a tour, whilst the girls went horse riding, & this was exactly what we needed. As it happened we were the only ones who booked so Finn gave us our own private tour anyhow! The short film set the scene perfectly & then Finn picked us up & drove us out onto the peninsula; it’s a different world there & not something you’d find easily on your own. The ride in the Land Rover Disco 4 was perfect & we did experience a bit of off-road too. One stop at a secret location, a flask of chocolate & another special stop on the way home all interspersed with explanations & anecdotes made for a great experience. Best of luck with the tours, you’ve set the standard high & deserve the best.
This tour with Dofri was an unforgettable experience. It began with an excellent film at the Volcano House showing footage of an actual eruption, and an explanation of what causes volcanic eruptions. We were then taken in a 4-wheel drive vehicle to various off-the-beaten path places, where we saw the most majestic views while walking on what once was lava. At some of these spots we were the only people there, and we could experience the total silence. And we didn't need to drive very far to reach these sites. Dofri tailored the tour to our physical abilities (were are in our 60s). His expert knowledge of geology, history, and environmental issues made the trip a great learning experience. Very cold and windy but a great tour and Finn was a good guide. Amazing how there is so much so close to the city.
Reykjavik Erupts is a small, family run tour company based in volcano house, a perfect place to start! These personable local guides will take you on a guided volcanic sites adventure tour adapted wonderfully to your interest and comfort level. Comfortable travels, small group charm, and a little traditional snack surprise on the side! I am very much looking forward to booking another tour with Reykjavik Erupts!
We were so happy to return to Iceland, and decided to go back to Reykjavic Erupts for a second tour of some hidden gems off the beaten track. We booked through the 'What's On' office in Reykjavic and were collected punctually at the Volcano House by Dofri in his Landrover Discovery. There were 3 in our party and we were also joined by Pierre from Sicily. Dofri is an amazing guide, and I think I described it before like driving around with your best friend. This is certainly more of an interactive experience than your normal tour, more of a continual conversation than a pre-prepared script. We discussed everything from the history of Iceland, geology, nature and folk law, all the time visiting the most amazing places, and surrounded by gorgeous scenery. It was a wonderful afternoon and such a shame it had to end. 10/10 Dofri, thank you so much for yet another amazing experience!! So if you fancy doing something different from the standard tours and really want to learn about this amazing island and its people, I can really recommend Dofri, and Reykjavic Erupts. Check out their website for full details of their trips.
We went to Volcano House and watched a couple of really interesting films about recent volcanic eruptions and their effect on the landscape and people of Iceland and beyond. We were met by Finnbogi Jonsson our tour guide for the morning. He took us out to the Reykjanes Peninsula and told us about the area showing us how the land was formed over the years. A heavy snowfall a few days previously had transformed the landscape into a winter wonderland and with the sun rising creating a beautiful pink reflection on the landscape. It was so tranquil and quiet. We were lucky enough to meet a snow plough which kindly cleared the road for us. We went to see the lava fields and a geothermal area to see the water bubbling up through the earth. Our trip was finished off with hot chocolate and a nip of rum and some Icelandic donughts. I would definitely recommend this company if you are looking for an individual and unique insight into Iceland. We hope to return in the summer time and would definitely book with Reykjavik Erupts.
I had an absolute, stellar, and fun-filled time in Iceland! The first country I ever went outside the U.S. Finn was an absolute, genuine, friendly guy. He truly makes you feel and understand the Icelandic culture. Finn offers a bright and personal tour experience than all the other I took during my stay. He brings unique, homemade, and authentic elements to make your Iceland trip from a 10/10 to an 11/10. I would recommend him to the highest degree and is definitely coming back to book another tour with him! Great character, he deserves the world.
We had an excellent trip on New year's Day. Finn was an fantastic guide who catered our trip to us (we were the only ones on the trip!) and the weather. We started off at the volcano house where we watched two films about the most famous eruptions in Iceland. We were then picked up and taken in a jeep to visit the lava fields and surrounding area. Incredible. Even in the winter.
We took the half day tour with Finn and he was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and had some great chats about Iceland and the world. Really interesting but the highlight was the scenery. We had a fantastic clear day so the views were amazing. We wanted to see snow so Finn made sure we did so for someone seeing the snow for the first time it was fun. He was very caring and always checking if we were OK on some of the slippy parts. Can't recommend highly enough and the 2 guys in Volcano House who recommended this tour have to be commended too. Overall a wonderful experience.
My friend and I had taken a couple of large group tours on our visit to Iceland, but the Volcanoes half day tour was just the two of us and our guide, Finn. That's it. Not thirty or forty other people. We started off the morning at the Volcano House (we were the only ones there, too), with two introductory films on volcanoes on Iceland; the huge eruption in 1973 (?) on the Westman Islands that forced evacuations of most of the population and devastated buildings and infrastructure, and then then disruptive eruption in 2010 of Eyjafjallajökull that shut down air traffic for weeks. We came out of the little theater to be greeted by Finn, and then we were off on the road. As we drove, Finn gave us more background on volcanoes and volcanic systems (it's more than just the erupting cone that we're all familiar with). We drove through lava fields (not flowing, but at one time it was), seeing incredible rock formations, stopped at a lake crystal clear, like glass, that you could drink out of, and I did. We also drove to Seltun, a geothermal area, with bubbling pools of mud, and the occasional whiff of sulfur. We visited some other stops, with amazing views, almost like being on the moon. What my friend and I both liked is we never felt rushed; we could stay and take photos as long as we liked before moving on. Finn took us to a hidden cave area, you can't see it from the road, and broke out a thermos of hot chocolate and a traditional Icelandic treat called a kleina. The tour was four hours, one hour for the films and time at Volcano House and around three out on the trails. We were lucky with the day, it wasn't too windy, not too cold and no rain or snow. The pictures I took really don't do it justice. We saw a lot of cars with families, but I don't think we saw one tour bus, which was nice. There is some ability to customize the tour (more hiking, more driving, etc.), and I would recommend Reykjavik Erupts for a personalized experience.
Our tour was marvelous. Our tour guide Finn took advantage of a beautiful day and took us to some remarkable viewing places. He was very knowledgeable about volcanoes in general, and about the local volcanic activity. He was also nice to hang out with for a half day. I took pictures of the view with my camera but he took pictures of us on his, and emailed them to us after. It was thoughtful of him to do for us. We were very comfortable in a very fancy Land Rover. I would highly recommend visiting the volcanoes and highly recommend this tour company (especially Finn, if you can request him).
This was a great tour. In truth I could have gone without the two documentaries you watch at the Volcano House before you go out, but once in Dofri's Land Rover, the real fun started. Dofri is a super guy. He takes the time to know the names of the people he's with and is with you explaining and telling stories every step of the way. Totally worth the extra cash to be on a more "intimate" tour like this with just a couple other people. Saw black sand beaches, geo thermal areas, and even hiked on dried lava fields. Overall this is a wonderful tour and I'd recommend to anyone, especially if you're looking to experience the Icelandic landscape without having to eat up a whole day in a coach. Thank you, Dofri!!
My husband and I did this tour as my husband loves volcanoes and Iceland is the perfect place to see them. We could not have had a better day, the film at the volcano house was a great start to the day, giving background to what we were about to see. Our guide, Finn, was very friendly and knowledgeable, and we were lucky that we were the only two on the tour that day! The places we visited were deserted from other people which was great, and the landscapes looked other worldly. We were in a Land Rover discovery which was the perfect vehicle for the off road routes we were able to take to see things we wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. I would highly recommend, and had we had longer in Iceland, we would definitely have booked one of their other tours.
This was a great tour for the 3 of us. Finn was great and very friendly. The scenery was amazing and the hot chocolate and twisted daughnot was very nice.
A fun tour that wont take up your whole day. I learned a lot about the volcanos and saw some amazing scenery in only about 20-30 min drive from the city centre.
We had a free afternoon during our short trip to Iceland and decided to take a Iceland Volcanoes half day tour. Our guide's knowledge, experience, and love for his country was noticed in every aspect of the tour. It was the best day of our trip! We couldn't think of a better way to have celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary. We highly recommend this tour.
I highly recommend this half-day tour for those who have a limited time for a trip. The scenery was breath-taking and beautiful! Finn was a very friendly and fun guide to have.:)
Tour starst with short movie about volcanoes in Iceland. Great movie, not like the ones you can find on youtube! Perfect amount of interesting informations! Then show is about to start on wonderful Rejkyanes, with extremely kind and knowledgeable guide who will make you feel like you know him as friend for long time and Iceladnic facts perfectly! Half day is perfectly enough time to see everything you need in this area. I am so grateful for this day! Joint this tour and see why it has the best rates! :-)
Tour director was very knowledgeable, encouraged questions. When the tour was over, we had a deep understanding of the Icelandic ecosystem. Highly recommended, should not be missed.
Amazing private tour with friendly and passionate guide Finn! Unbelievable beautiful views in peace and quiet places :)
First off the name Volcanoes Half Day tour creates a picture that you get to see an active volcano. But it is not. We are visiting an area that is an active Volcano area. But the tour is really good. The pickup and tour guide were excellent. Travel was in a Land rover so very comfortable. We got to see about 4-5 different places. Lave fields, Kleifarvatn, Geothermal fields, hot springs, Off road near the lake to a small cave. Even though we start the tour at 10AM and finish at 1pm it felt time passed really fast. Definitely recommend for a half day tour
We had the best day with Finn! We were the only ones on the tour so it was able to be tailored to us. -We made a stop at a “secret” spot and had the most wonderful view, then continued to the regular places on the tour agenda. We felt like we were just out with a friend- by the end of the tour we all indeed became friends! :)
Our guide was interesting and treated the small group in a friendly manner helping me walk in some rocky paths. The geothermal fields are amazing with striking bubbling mud pools with sulfur steam all over.. A wonderful excursion not to be missed.
Very small (5 people) private tour in guide's nice big Jeep. Got picked up at Volcano House after seeing 60 minute film. Guide was friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, passionate, entertaining. Went out of his way to show us very special places that even locals don't know about. Stopped at several places and was able to walk/hike around. Never felt rushed. Amazing landscapes, great photo opps, Tour was tailored to the abilities of our small group, being mindful of the ecology. Special surprise or two in the end. Most delightful, top activity on our trip of wonderful activities.
My crew and I had a 24 hour in layover and we booked a private tour through Reykjavik Erupts. Finn was our guide in a Land Rover SUV. We had a blast. Finn was very knowledgeable of the area and showed us all the highlights. I highly recommend using this company if you are not up for the big bus tours.
Having had our helicopter trip cancelled due to cloud, we decided on a private 4x4 excursion. We were not disappointed. Our driver, Finn, took us over to the lava fields south west of Reykjavik. The quiet, barren wilderness was a joy to behold. Finn was very knowledgeable and told us all about the geology and the flora and fauna. It was a wonderful afternoon and we would recommend it to anyone.
Dofri is s very friendly and knowledgeable guide. He promptly picked me up at the domestic airport as I was flying back from isafjordur. We drove out in his Land Rover to see many remote beautiful areas where there were or had been volcanos. Saw desolate lava fields with their own unique beauty. Dofri is s very interesting person to talk with and we had some good conversations about Iceland. He is also a sheep whisperer because when I got out to take some photos of sheep grazing he was able to get them to come up to us. This was a fun experience. Overall I would recommend Dofri and Reykjavík erupts for tours as they are personalized for each guest or group and you can see things you want not what’s on a bus tours itinerary!
Whilst the weather was not cooperating the tour was definitely worth it. We met at Volcano house after watching a couple of really interesting videos and were lucky enough (maybe due to the weather) to have the guide to ourselves. We headed up to a fresh water lake, then on to see the strata of ash/rock/and lava that comprises Iceland illustrated. A trip to some hot water springs followed and then a visit to a hidden cave for some hot chocolate (with a little something extra) and typical Icelandic pastry (doughnut) before heading back with an inpromptu visit to a fish drying set up. So whilst not ideal conditions a really interesting and informative tour. Well worth it
We booked this tour wanting to see and learn about some of the volcanic activity in Iceland. We were not disappointed. My wife and I very much enjoyed the opening documentaries and the exhibits at the Volcano House. The travel was in a very comfortable Land Rover and our tour guide Fin was outstanding. He was extremely knowledgeable not only about the landscape but about the history of Iceland as we asked several questions out of curiosity as things came up. He also gave us some great insight into the daily lives of modern Icelanders. Very educational and I feel like I learned a great deal of information. This was one of the best tours that we did during our week and a half long stay. In addition, we enjoyed a very tasty surprise at the end!
Everything about this tour was just awesome! Dofri is extremely knowledgeable as well as a great story teller. We definitely saw parts of Iceland that we never would have seen without his tour--just a tiny a bit off roads with some breath-taking views. He made it personal and super enjoyable, to include a yummy home-made cup of cocoa and donut enjoyed while in a secret cave! We highly recommend this tour.
This tour is absolutely amazing, unique and a perfect hidden gem right outside of Reykjavik city. Dofri and Finnbogi are the perfect guides, so knowledgeable and funny. It really feels like two of your friends are showing you some hidden spots around Iceland with almost no one else in sight and you learn a lot. Super fun half day experience and some surprises I wont spoil. Highly recommended! Thanks for an amazing day!
This is easily the best tour I did while in Iceland. Dofri knows what he is talking about and was able to give scientific knowledge about the amazing landforms he shows you. He took my mom and I to places that not many people travel to while in Iceland, and the scenery is unreal. He also took pictures of my mom and I, and shared them with us very shortly after the tour. I have already recommended the tour to several of my friends who have made plans to visit Iceland this summer.
This is a great tour and good way to spend an afternoon around Reykjavik. We chose this trip thru TripAdvisor as a last minute excursion with our 2 young boys (9 and 10) during a short stay downtown. Following a short movie presentation at the Volcano House, which was somewhat interesting, Dofri the tour guide drove us in a comfortable Land Rover to hike an old volcano, visit a picturesque lake and check out some steaming sulfur springs. The Land Rover seated 6 - so it was us and another nice couple. Dofri is a fascinating local individual who has a number of entertaining anecdotes as well as extensive knowledge about the geology of the region. He’s also quite a fast hiker. My son and I took him up on a dare to plunge into the subarctic lake, which was a memorable experience. Bottled water was available during the drive, and hot cocoa at the lake. Dofri took several great photos on his phone which he emailed us shortly after. I highly recommend this tour for adventurous visitors who like science/geology, a little exercise, and hearing some local lore.
Dofri, from the moment you collected us, I knew we were in for a special day, and was far from disappointed! Thank you for a wonderful experience. I have always been interested in tectonics: what better place to see it first hand, than in Iceland, and to have someone like you with your knowledge to show us around. Coming from Zimbabwe, the whole trip was such a memorable, unique experience. Lobster soup and hot chocolate were just the best way to end our Icelandic trip.
Fantastic half day tour with Dager in superb Land Rover He supplied hot chocolate and Icelandic cakes which were very much appreciated on a freezing cold day. Scenery absolutely amazing and very knowledgeable guide told us so much about Iceland. Definitely money well spent with a brilliant guy to show us sight. Thank you
Dofri was a terrific guide! I loved that our group was his sole focus. He was very friendly, referred to all of us by name, and took us on a great adventure. I loved the rum/hot chocolate at the end of the tour. Thank you Dofri!!
We were lucky enough to be the only family to book the half day volcano tour from Reykjavik Erupts, so we got a private tour with Dofri. What an amazing day!! Dofri clearly loves Iceland, and has a great knowledge of the area, and about the volcanos, lava fields, mountains, lakes, and the geothermal area we visited. He even brought along his dog, to the delight of all of us : ) We ended the day with a picnic at "Troll Lake", which was lovely. And as an added note, I had an injury earlier in the week and was very nervous about being able to participate. Dofri made sure there was nothing too difficult for me to do, and helped me to navigate any of the trickier areas. Thanks Dofri - this tour was one of the highlights of our Iceland adventure!!
Dofri Hermannsson Was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned a lot about Iceland and how it was formed in a way we all could easily understand. The hikes into the scenic areas were beautiful. Every stop was great and each area breathtakingly beautiful. After spending the day with Dofri I want to come back and learn more about this amazing country.
