If you have time before your flight, this is a great way to spend it. It's also one of the cheapest ways to get to the airport. Lots of interesting sights of the volcanic peninsula. 'Gummy' was a very friendly and helpful guide.

Itinerary
Head southwest from the capital and have your cameras ready as you will be passing by the president's house and old fishermen's houses in Hafnafjordur to finally reach our Reykjanes Peninsula - a land of volcanoes and geothermal activity.
Stop to admire the picturesque lake Kleifarvatn. Keep a look out, as this water is rumored to be hiding odd creatures in its depths.
Grænavatn translates to a green lake which was formed by a volcanic crater. It gets its green color from high content of sulfur and considerable depth (ca 45 m).
Take a walk between bubbling hot springs on a colorful hillside.
Experience one of a kind geothermal area of mud pools with a ghost story embedded in its past.
Experience the dramatic landscape around Grindavík, where you can witness the newly formed lava fields and the eerie, abandoned city that was once a thriving community.
Spot the Iceland´s oldest lighthouse Reykjanesviti and admire amazing rock formations of the Valahnúkamöl ridge
Finally, find yourself between Europe and North America over a major fissure called the Mid Atlantic Ridge.

An absolutely fascinating tour in an otherworldly landscape with volcanic fields, geothermal steaming pools, the abandoned lava and earthquake abandoned town of Grindavik, the bridge across the separating Eurasian tectonic plate -- and more. Driver/guide was very knowledgeable, having lived for over 70 years in the country, and had interesting stories to share. We sat up front and had no trouble hearing his commentary. He was an excellent driver of the minivan which held about 14 of us, and had a trailer attached to it with the luggage of passengers, all of whom would be dropped off in time at the airport. Weather was a challenge, but made the trip very atmospheric. We all made it to the airport with time to spare. Gateway to Iceland local operator was extremely prompt and helpful in answering all questions when email was sent with queries -- very reliable, too, and very understanding when it was a challenge for us to find the meeting place at the cruise port. Viator was also very helpful. A tip: make sure you click on the pin that is sent with your confirmed payment, which will show you exactly where to meet the minivan -- it won't necessarily be where you get off your ship, particularly if there is another ship in port. In our case it was at the opposite end of the terminal. Another tip: wear sturdy footwear and have raingear -- weather can be very windy and cold. Water and a snack is a good idea, too. Another tip: very few restrooms along the way, so make sure to take care of everything before boarding the bus; we had one place on the way for such a facility -- that's because of the relative barrenness of the landscape. Definitely an unforgettable highlight of our stay in Iceland. Price is relatively reasonable, given all that you see and learn. A cab alone from cruise port can run into the $150 range.
We took the tour on Aug 18, 2025. We visited quite some scenic and interesting places. Our driver/guide (I can’t remember the exact spelling but I think it is Rackel) is very good. She presented some of the information with power point slides and sometimes photos. A picture is worth a thousand words. She gave us in depth information of the area, history, culture, etc. She took us to the village, Grindavik, where the residence needed to be evacuated due to the volcano disruption. We get some idea the degree of devastation that have caused. She took us to a restaurant and recommended the baked fresh fish. That day, it was cod. I have never had cod that was so good. The van is the most comfortable of all the trips I took in Iceland. I would definitely recommend this tour. For a couple of stops, it would be perfect if more time was allowed, like the geothermal area Krysuvik.
Really good tour and excellent guide lots to see even though it was dark due to winter. The lava fields were good to see and the keyboard at the edge of the world
Highly recommended tour, we kind of went off the beaten tracks! The first stop by the lake had some amazing views even though it was extremely windy. We also saw Icelandic sheep’s, the lookout over the ocean by Reykjanesbær was so beautiful and breathtaking!! Our guide was also very great and knew everything about Iceland!!
This tour is not a full day tour and allows for drop offs at the Blue Lagoon and airport which has many advantages for those not wanting to return to Reykjavik. While our tour guide Starry covered information about the sites we visited, he also provided contemporary and historical political and cultural commentary which added a lot to the tour. The highlight was learning about his anicent lineage and family literary traditions dating back to the ninth century. In the US, many of us can cite family history no further back than our great grandparents so I was in awe of his heritage. If you are interested in Icelandic history as well as the stunning geographic sites, I definitely recommend the Geopark tour with this guide.
The most memorable part of the tour was due to the knowledge and friendliness of our tour guide, Starri. Rather than just driving us from tourist attraction to tourist attraction, Starri gave us a real look and history of Rejkavik and its surroundings. We had a fun stop at a market where we were able to buy (with Starri's guidance) popular Icelandic candies to take home. Best souvenirs ever. The only negative part was the van was too small for 6 people,
The guide was excellent, telling us many things about Icelandic society, economy, nature and of course about visited sites. The sites were spectacular and I really enjoyed the tour. The only thing I didn't like is too many emails from Viator sending me the same ticket at least 3 times. All in all for this one tour I received more then 10 emails from Viator. Please do not spam us with unnecessary emails!
Our driver/guide was Gauti, who was very knowledgeable on the Reykjanes volcanic area. We had done the Golden Circle the day before, where you see a cascading waterfall, small geyser and blue lake but would recommend the Geopark tour above that, as so much more to see and experience a wider range of landscapes. Thermal power stations, walk on 800 year old lava fields, view gannet rookeries, vast lakes, bubbling pools in colourful mineral landscapes and stand between two continents on the tectonic plates of Europe and North America. Also the President’s house and meeting buildings. Gauti also told us about Iceland’s political, historical and mythological background. As there were only six of us on the tour, there was plenty of room on the Mini. We were dropped off at our accommodation in Kellie after an interesting day. Thanks to Gateway to Iceland and Gauti.
The most memorable and incredible experience, everything was amazing, perfect and professional, recommend everyone 100%
Our guide Gauti Erickson was excellent. He knew so much about the locations we visited. This was one of the best tours I have ever done. We enjoyed every minute!
The tour guide was great. We enjoyed the stops, and the tour gives you a little taste of Iceland. However, I would be hesitant to book for airport drop off. Our flight was at 4:45, and we got dropped off at the airport around 2:45. I was reassured that KEF is a small airport, but it was still a 15-20 minute walk to the gate, and the line for passport control was long. Our flight ended up being delayed 15 minutes, which was fortunate for us because we didn't get to the gate until 4:40. I do wish we could have been picked up earlier. We had to disembark our cruise at 8AM and waited outside with nowhere to sit until pickup at 9:30. The weather was gloomy with light rain, so an earlier pickup time would have been more convenient and helped us avoid the stress at the airport. However, it all worked out, and the tour itself was great.
This tour was amazing and our guide was too. It was very nice to have a small group tour as there were only 7 of us on our trip so we had plenty of time at each stop. We took a moment to drive to the Icelandic President's house to allow time for the weather to clear up and it did! We saw so many neat and different things, from all the different colors of the hot springs to the beautiful Graenavatn or green lake. The bridge between continents offers a fun photo moment. But the highlight for us was seeing the Memorial to the Great Auk and The home of Volcano Man- the spot where they filmed this song from the Eurovision Story Of Fire Saga movie starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams! As another bonus, we had the time to visit Brimketil pool, which was just spectacular. We choose to be dropped off at the Blue Lagoon afterwards, and that was fantastic as well since we were permitted to drive on the road past the closed village Grindavik and we saw the new lava fields on our way to the Blue Lagoon. Things to keep in mind: even in summer, dress for wind and weather as these changed many times during our trip. Our guide let us know that given where we were headed, that we didn't have a scheduled lunch stop, but we were able to grab lunch at a shop so we could eat on the way. He also helped plan out bathroom stops as most locations do not have restrooms. The hot springs do have an odor of sulphur which can be strong. It didn't bother us, but may not be the best tour for someone traveling with small children, but perfect for older kids/ teens.
The tours have been very interested and average good service. But one day they arrived to pick us up an hour late without anycall or any information, till we call them. I would recomend them but they should be aware of this details.Sometimes during the process of booking the tours, the answer to our emails was arriving days after.
Great tour from the pick up from our hotel to the drop off at the Blue Lagoon. Thor, the tour guide was amazing. We learnt a lot about Iceland. The scenery was incredible. Enjoyed every minute of it. Highly recommended.
Competent drivers with good knowledge. Very friendly they do all the classics Iceland tours and if you book direct get 15% discount. Small groups. Tip they go with minimum of 4 so a private tour is feasible.
Tour guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable. Allowed ample time to visit sites and for a great lunch at a small harbor town. Easy access to most locations and easy walking distance for each stop. Highly recommended - Brad_B
Our guide, Ian, was exceptional. His knowledge of geology was supplemented with stories of history and events. He pointed out all the interesting places, mixing the right amount of stops and drive bys. He took us to a very local place for lunch. The vehicle was perfect for a pick up with all the luggage and a drop off at the airport. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour for anyone who has a late afternoon flight.
Late in the evening, literally less than 12 hours before the scheduled start of the tour, we suddenly received an email with last minute cancellation saying that they were unable to run this tour because they can’t meet the minimum numbers of participants. Our tour was with the airport drop-off, so it was quite hectic to rearrange our Flybus pickup and rework the plan for our last day in Iceland. They processed the refund of course (within 10 business days) and offered to arrange a taxi for exactly the same price we could have done ourselves. Next time we will book all our tours with NiceTravel, I have nothing but the nicest words to say about their superb guides, prompt communication and flawless tours. We had done three day tours with them and are ready for more next year.
Exactly what I expected. The guide/driver Chris did very well. Works perfectly with Pick up at hotel in REY and drop off in KEF.
I can't believe how many opportunities were lost at planning or executing this tour. To be honest, I feel slightly cheated. Btw, we didn't stop at the lakes though there were lot of places to stop and weather was allowing. I wish we would at least be given explanation why do we skip them. Instead, first hour (at least) was more of Reykjavik properties tour. We were circling over some boring neighborhoods and we learning about what kind of income of people living there, where teenagers assemble, where is expensive but 24h open supermarket, assisted living buildings, fishing factories, mold in concrete, Apple building, etc etc. Later on at the tour we were pointed at every single farm, every single school, every single greenhouse, expanding Ikea, name of the gas station, where our guide had wedding anniversary, which house was farm but now is artist studio and whether guide has been or hasn't been there, which type of houses our guide was considering to buy but didn't and why. Grain silos, gravel pits, ex-car dealers buildings. And list goes on and on and on. I mean... What a useless bunch of information! But then, he wouldn't almost at all announce next stops or when we reach them. Like... How? Why? Isn't it absolutely bare minimum we should hear? Amount of information about geology and geography fades in comparison with all the useless facts about which greenhouse grows what:( All the nature stops were good of course. What else can one say about springs and cliffs? Boy oh boy, this was an absolute torture.
This Tour was just Amazing! Our guide Jacob had a very good vibe allowing us to learn more about Iceland and all its history. I 100% recommend it !
The landscape was incredible. It was like walking on the moon! So glad we did this tour. Our flight home wasn't until 8pm, so this was a great way to kill half a day.
Did this last year. Price ($115) still the same a year later. Booked this tour to get from cruise ship port to airport. Ship docked first thing in morning and flight was early evening. Cruise wanted $75 each for transport, and we'd waste the whole day at the airport. PROs: -Small mini-bus with excellent driver/guide. -Great pace, incl lunch stop. -Saw everything we were supposed to, which, surprisingly, is a LOT! Very varied. This southwest corner doesn't get the writeups (aside from eruptions) like the other parts of Iceland (which we've seen). Yeah, we were limited to staying near the airport but we never felt this tour was a compromise, but rather, a WIN as we saw so much, killed time, and got to the airport. -Would consider doing this again if I did another cruise. CONs: -(only for cruisers) The relatively small cruise port is chaos, full of...yep, small mini-buses and big. I ended up using my US phone ($20/day) at the curb to call the tour operator and locate the bus. Get the vehicle reg number beforehand if you can. -We drove right by lighthouse; no stopping. Not sure why....
Obviously there's not much Ian, our guide, doesn't know about Iceland! I learned a lot not only about Reykyanes peninsula but also about how Islanders live. Ian makes you comfortable and I do appreciate his humor. The tour is terrific; you really come near the power of nature.
If I could give 10 stars I would do so! I had this tour on my birthday to go to the blue lagoon afterwards and it was INCREDIBLE! Best birthday ever to have this tour followed by a dip in the blue lagoon (although I did experience the secret lagoon on the golden circle tour with gateway to iceland later in the week and preferred it to the blue lagoon!) Gummi my tour guide is just the most incredible tour guide I've experienced! I'm from the UK and he's almost the equivalent of an Icelandic David Attenborough but I think this is actually doing Gummi a disservice to even compare him to anyone, even to David Attenborough! Gummi is a very experienced, unique and wonderful tour guide and person and this makes for an equally unique and wonderful tour experience! Filled with lots of knowledge and passion about Icelandic folklore, history, locals and his own family too - I learnt so much! A real gem of a find and tour/tourguide in Iceland! I particularly loved his charming, narrative storytelling about Gunna! I enjoyed this tour so much that I went on to book 2 more tours with him in Iceland for the South Coast and the Golden Circle which were also incredible and I'm really glad I booked these three tours during my weeks stay in Iceland, Reykjavik. Would recommend booking directly with Gateway to Iceland via email or phone for potential discounts if you book multiple tours too!
Our driver was most informative and pleasant giving us some knowledge in respect of the geological aspects of Iceland, it's history and politics. We thoroughly enjoyed the excursion and recommend it.
This tour was one of the most interesting, thorough tours I have ever been on. Gummi, our tour guide took us all over the peninsula and was full of information and took us to out-of-the-way sites that other tour companies would not have visited. We even had a sit-down lunch with Gummi at a nice casual restaurant. Highly recommend this tour!
The landscape, hike, guide, driver were all great! Medium impact level is a correct assessment. Pack a snack.
We did this tour as a private tour with 4 of us and our tour guide was Gummi. We had the best time. Gummi was brilliant, so knowledgeable, has great stories and brought us on extra stops. We did other tours while in Iceland but this was by far the best. It’s off the beaten path with far less tourists and at times it was just us at certain locations. We saw some stunning scenery and learnt all about the Reykjanes Penninsula.
The entire week we visited Reykjavik was beset by bad weather and several of our selected tours were canceled. We generally found out the night before, or in the case of late night northern lights tours, the day of. Unfortunately, for this anticipated tour, we found out 17 minutes prior and we were already on the way to the pick up spot. Lucky for us, a hotel desk clerk saw us heading back INTO the hotel for a forgotten item and told us the tour operator would not be showing up. It was particularly frustrating because it was our last day in country and we had already checked out of the hotel and the tour was our plan for the day. We felt that a decision to cancel the tour was probably made much sooner than when we were told and better and more timely communication is required in these situations.
We had an amazing time with the guide! He was very nice, he took the time to explain everything about the different places. he has a good sense of humour. It was a very pleasant day!
Our guide, Gummi, was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting as he shared his insight about the area. The scenery was breath-taking and we enjoyed all the sights and stops along the way. Fantastic day - thank you Gummi!
It’s not what goes wrong but what you do about it. There was a problem with our original tour (beyond anyones control) - GWtI provided exceptional customer service, they kept us informed at every point and provided a great alternative tour. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Great tour with Gummi who knows every spot of the Reykjanes peninsula. He told us many insights and stories you cannot find on a print guide or if you rent a car and visit the peninsula alone. I can recommend it for people travelling alone or in couple/small group of friends. It was amazing! Gummi knows when you can see seagulls, how the landscape is changing weekly in the geopark, he showed to us from the main road the 2021 eruption, told us stories about the ocean, hidden people.. And we had a really good fish and chips too because he knows also restaurants, bakeries etc..
Very knowledgeable guide and amazing nature. Not much walking during the tour which fitted me perfectly being pregnant.
We had a great tour of the Reykjanes geopark with Gateway to Iceland tours. Our guide, Gummi, tailored the tour to our small groups interests, followed the itinerary, and shared his extensive and unique first hand knowledge along the way. This was the perfect tour and guide for our last day in Iceland, so relaxing. Out of all our tours, Gateway to Iceland had the smoothest driving tour guides.
Our guide was so knowledgeable! Great little tour if you only have 6 hours to spend it Iceland. And a good deal with inclusion of airport drop-off
Tour guide was excellent and was a great area to explore. This should be offered more though because the drop off at the airport is a nice bonus.
Our guide, Hilde, was amazing. Super friendly and a source of an unbelievable amount of history. Pretty scenery and lots of personal attention since we ended up doing a private tour. Would definitively use Gateway to Iceland again...and would request Hilde to be our guide.
The Views were amazing Ian was a good guide very informative ,made The trip interesting. Geysers ,mudpots looked amazing .
I struggle to understand the positive reviews (although there are enough poors/terribles that get to the truth - do look). They cancelled my tour booked weeks ahead at less than 24 hours notice and then did absolutely nothing to find any alternative, leaving me to sort that out while on another trip. I met someone that evening and she had suffered exactly the same thing and this afternoon our guide was busy on the phone to a couple whose tour for tomorrow morning had just been cancelled. The excuse was minimum numbers not met, perhaps because wise people have worked out they are cowboys and chancers. Since it is clear that these people are serial last minute cancellers, be warned!
The guide knew soooo many things. We got to have what seemed like a tour from a local. We got to know more about the history of Iceland and Reykjavik and the different traditions and beliefs. The places that were included were not that crowded and not as touristic.
There is no need to spend lot’s of time researching which Tour company to use - Gateway to Iceland are simply Outstanding ! I booked 3 tours with GTI and each was fantastic. Gummi and Jakob were fantastic knowledgeable guides and everywhere we went it was wow after wow. This company will take you to off the beaten track places as well as all the major sites and I never felt rushed at any stop. You can really experience Iceland to the full with Gummi’s company and he works tirelessly to ensure everyone has an amazing experience. Thank you Gateway for the time of my life !
It was a nice way to get in another activity before our flight and guarantee transport to the airport. I'm not sure if it is just because of the poor weather but we went through the locations quickly and the entire excursion was about an hour shorter than expected.
Interesting sights of Reykjanes. Small group and Gummi was a guide with a lot of knowledge and he let us enough time to explore the sights.
This was the last of the four tours we did during our stay, but the only one we booked via Gateway to Iceland. We had a brilliant day, taking in all the natural beauty and small fishing villages of the Reykjanes peninsula. Gummy our guide was so knowledgeable, attentive and thoughtful. He was the best guide of all the tours we did in Iceland! Would highly recommend this company and will definitely book with them when we return to Iceland.
Great tour, off the beaten track...not the best weather but our guide Ian was brilliant!! Ian was so knowledgeable about the locations and the country. He put everyone at ease in the group which made the tour very interactive, and really added to the experience. The tour itself was very interesting and diverse starting off with a drive passed the Presidents residence, through a field with racks of drying fish (this was actually one of my favourite pictures of the holiday), some hot springs and of course the bridge between two continents. There was a great stop for lunch, our recommendation would be the lobster soup (this was the best lobster soup we had whilst in Iceland) Ian was patient while everyone took their pictures and at no point did we feel rushed. We took several tours all with different companies and this tour was by far our favourite.
This tour was very good, from pick up on time through to drop off at pre arranged destination. The route was so scenic and fascinating, and the knowledge of the area by our Scottish driver, Ian, was interesting and really informative about local traditions, geology and the history of the island and area. I would highly recommend this tour as it's not such a touristy area to tour and few people were around. My only criticism would be for the guide to provide a length of time allowed during each stop, as a clear guideline so the passengers know how long they have i.e for lunch or to view a certain area.
Great half-day trip before my departure with direct airport drop-off. A fantastic way to get a taste of the Reykjanes Peninsula with stops at many scenic sites. Ian was a lively and knowledgeable guide with many interesting anecdotes and fun facts. The group wasn't very big either which was great as it gave us a chance to interact more and it felt more personal.
