Solvi was great! I feel bad I doubted him but he was right! I went from thinking we would not see anything to being amazed!

Sol was our guide. Very informative
The good part is we finally got to see the northern lights, and took many beautiful pictures. We were also able to get back to the hotel directly. The tour guide is very knowledgeable and helpful, and the hot cocoa made the cold night not as miserable as it could be. The confusing part was the so called "private tour" as I originally booked. The original price was 870.00 for six adults, and I got a 10% discount to reduce the total to 783.00, still quite expensive. I was expecting a dedicated vehicle for our group but we were shuttled to the central meeting place then boarded a large bus with 25 to 30 people. I didn't know why the shuttle bus driver was rushing us until we arrived at the place to join the group. This is obviously not the private tour I expected, but have seen the lights made all these not as important. Overall I still recommend taking a dedicated tour because if the conditions are not perfect, the tour guide gives you a much better chance of seeing the northern lights.
We were lucky enough to have Sol, who was a very patient and informative guide. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Really great trip. Our guide was really knowledgeable and discussed where we were going and why. Bree set our expectations quite low, which is a good idea as absolutely nothing is guaranteed with the Northern Lights. We did see them albeit the weather had other plans! She confirmed she was going to class it as ‘not seen’ as she knew how beautiful they can be and we didn’t see them to the full and she wanted us to have the full experience. Seems like a great excuse to return to Iceland to rebook! Wrap up warm though, we had wind, rain and hail. Still didn’t stop me from standing in the dark staring though. My only comment is that we paid extra for the small group, however, in reality there were 2 buses so it was really just a normal sized excursion split into 2 buses. Annoyingly, the other bus kept putting its door lights on which spoils the light for viewing the NL.
Sol was a fantastic guide and this experience was one of the highlights of our trip. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained complex concepts thoroughly.
We enjoyed an incredible Northern Light show on Oct. 6, 2026. Timing was perfect and the lights started as we stepped off the bus. Our tour guide, Solvi was very knowledgeable and entertained and educated our group about what we might see and how to capture using our cameras. Saw multiple shooting stars too. We would highly recommend this experience!
Sol with Reykjavík Excursions was our tour guide he did a wonderful job explaining the what we would see and how we should prepare to take payoff the Northern Lights. With his direction I was able to take great photos.
We were originally scheduled for Oct 3rd but the tour was canceled twice because of clouds. The tour team was helpful in rescheduling and 3rd time on Oct 6 was the charm. My tour guide, Solvi, did a wonderful job. He found a great spot for seeing the northern lights and kept us educated and entertained. Would highly recommend!
Sol was fantastic in his presentation of facts and the wonder of the “magic”! What a great adventure!!
Lauren C and Leo were amazing tour guides. Lauren was lively and engaging. She shared information about the northern lights but in an entertaining way which made it fun! Definitely would recommend this excursion.
We had a wonderful experience. Our tour guide Lauren C was excellent as was our bus driver Caff (not sure of spelling). They took us to a location with maximum darkness and a gorgeous mountain landscape. They were informative, entertaining and also prepared us for the reality that seeing the lights is hit or miss. Luckily, Mother Nature cooperated and put on quite a display.
If you book this tour, make sure that you go to the information desk at the bus station when you arrive and get clear directions about the tour. I was given inaccurate information by other staff at the station and missed the small group tour. The company offered me the large bus tour, which was ok, but I paid for the small group tour. When I requested a refund of the difference, the company refused to do so.
We’re so appreciative of the passion, persistence, and patience that Solvi brought to our Northern Lights tour. He has a remarkable depth of knowledge — historical, scientific, geographic, and even artistic — and he wove all of it into an experience that felt truly special. His instincts told him to keep driving in search of the optimal viewing spot, and he was absolutely right. Thanks to his determination, we ended up with a spectacular show in the sky, complete with oohs and gasps from our entire group. Kudos to Solvi for an unforgettable night. Linda and Don
We had Solvi take us out to see the Northern lights. The tour had been cancelled the previous day and this was our last night and it wasn’t looking great. However his persistence and tenacity ensured we had a memorable tour with hot chocolate and cinnamon cookies to keep us energised on a cold night. Thank you for a 5 star plus experience with photographic memories that are a credit to him!
Amazing tour with Sölvi! Very kind and friendly guide. On the top, we saw some extraordinary lights from a very good spot.
We were soooo lucky with the northern lights!! It was a spectacular ride! Not only nature collaborated but also Sol, our guide, and the structure offered by him !! Loved all the information he shared with us and all the effort for getting us great pics :)
My Wife and II booked this tour for 21 February 2026. Overall I found this to be a totally disappointing experience. Here are some things you might want to take into account if you are considering booking this tour. The cost of the small group tour is ISK 14,499 (approx. £89) per person. Although it is advertised as a small group tour there could be as many as 25 people on the tour. The cost of the "classic tour" is ISK 8999 (approx. £55) per person and will be on a larger bus. Local pick up is at an extra cost ISK 1799 (approx. £11) and I do not know if this cost is included with the "free tour" as outlined below. If the small group tour goes ahead but no lights are seen, then a "free tour" is available on the "classic tour"which is ISK 5499 (approx. £44) cheaper. If you are not able to go on the free tour before leaving Iceland it remains available for two years if you should return to Iceland. Refunds are only available if the tour is cancelled and you choose not to reschedule you can then apply for a refund. Communication was poor concerning whether the tour was going ahead or not and I did not receive a text or a call as I expected. Fortunately the guides on other tours were able to provide information. Due to being told wrongly that the tour was leaving 30 minutes early, we waited outside for over 50 minutes for the connecting bus. On the three days we were available for the tour it was cancelled on the first night, went ahead on the second night and as no lights were seen, it was then rescheduled for the third night, which was then cancelled. My main issue is that the company decides if the tour goes ahead or not. In my case the skies were overcast and my weather forecast showed cloud all evening, However I was obliged to attend the tour as there was then insufficent time to cancel for a refund. Having spent several hours driving around in the dark it was decided that the tour would be curtailed due to the unfavourable weather conditions with a free tour being made available. However this free tour was then cancelled the following night. Under these circumstances it is clear that the decisions to proceed with the tour or not are made by the company, but with all of the risk being borne by the customer. I did complain to the company, as I did not believe the tour should have proceeded given the weather conditions and requested a refund. I did receive a prompt reply stating no refunds are available and that they had made a decision as follows : "to run the tour made in accordance with our long-established operational procedures, and based on the latest meteorological/aurora data. While the forecast maps show a smaller area of clear sky, this does not directly indicate a low probability of sightings. Our operation team evaluates multiple weather models including cloud movement patterns, and aurora forecasts before confirming a departure. Tours are only operated when there is a reasonable possibility of a sighting." However I do not beleve this was the case for our tour and the driver/guide did not seem confident of getting any sightings and was driving around more in hope than expectation. I really hope that the decision to proceed with the tour was not made solely for commercial reasons. All of the information concerning cancellations etc. is set out on the tour website but if you are unlucky as we were, you could spend ISK 32, 596 (approx. £200) for a couple, just to be driven around in the dark for 3 hours. Accordingly my feeling is that this was an expensive and ultimately a very disappointing experience. If the skies are clear and the northern lights are visible I am sure that observing them away from the light pollution of the city , with a knowledeable and enthusiastic guide on this tour would be wonderful, but just be aware of the risks. We also used the company for the flybus, the golden circle and south coast tours and were completely satisfied with those services, which will be covered by seperate reviews.
Amazing thanks to Solvi who was an amazing guide He went out of his way to ensure we had the best experience the light show was wonderful
very nice trip really great guy slovi tour he was on the spot and always kind to help we finally see the northern lights in 2 places in iceland outside Reykjavik 👍🙏🇮🇸
Absolutely stunning evening. Solvi such a friendly and knowledgeable guide, wonderful to spend a night watching the lights move through the sky
Solvi was an incredible tour guide. Very kind and knowledgeable. He worked hard to track the lights for us and teach us all about it. He also helped us get the perfect pictures and was more than willing to take them. We saw some great lights and it was incredible to see how fast they move. Make sure you’re really prepared for the cold — although Solvi also had some great hot chocolate available.
Our guide Sol was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the science and the myths of the northern lights. He also had good advice about how best photograph the lights. We made 3 stops and were lucky to see the lights at each stop despite the conditions not being favourable. Sol very kindly obliged with taking photos for the various groups and also had hot chocolate and biscuits at the final stop which was greatly appreciated particularly by our children.
Amazing evening of northern lights hunting with our very knowledgable guide Solvi. The lights put on a wonderful show and Solvi helped everyone to set their camera up to get the perfect photo. Definitely an unforgettable experience, thank you 😊
Solvi provided a wonderful trip to see the Northern Lights! We were graced with dancing lights across the sky at the guidance of Solvi's private viewing areas! We would definitely do this trip again! Certainly would recommend many layers and handwarmers. Thank you!
Confusion with pick up so I phoned the main office. Not sure what happened but anyway we eventually got picked up. Sol was great - very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. Lots of handy tips on how to photograph the lights on your phone. We were lucky and saw some brilliant lights at our first stop. Went on to a second stop and had biscuit and hot chocolate.
It's kind of contradictory to leave a five stars feedback on a fruitless might, in facts we didn't have any sightings. The tour guide "Sol" was committed to find the best spots and repeatedly changed site chasing clear skies. Clouds, bright moon and specifical lack of solar wind unfortunately prevailed. I came back with lots of information, impressive lava landscape pictures under the moonlight and good mood. Three hours were flying, Additional benefit of free rebooking enhance the profile of this agent.
We had a great time and an unprecedented amount of solar activity. We were extremely lucky. Sol was a great guide, knowledgeable and very informative. Definitely recommend.
Sőlvi was spectacular. By far the best guide we’ve had during our stay. We were blessed with a great light show as well.
Went on the tour with guide name 'sol' who went above and beyond to ensure we saw the lights, took a gamble rolled the dice and managed 4 stops with visibility getting better. No better way to enjoy my partner starting her celebration turning 40 as we past midnight. Top guide and definitely recommend
Solvi was a very informative guide and did his utmost to ensure that we found the best spot from where to see the lights. The journey was approx 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik and he made it an interesting time by explaining the phenomena of the lights. Highly recommend
Amazing night! We were lucky enough to catch a full display of lights on one of the most active nights of the year. Sölvi was our guide and he took great care of us - he was engaging, informative and even provided us with some hot chocolate and biscuits halfway through the evening. It doesn’t get much better than this, would definitely recommend!
We came to Iceland to see the Aurora Borealis and we weren't disappointed. The fact that we chose the one time that we could have seen them from the comfort of our own home in Southern England is neither here nor there. Our host and guide was Solvi and he made the evening both entertaining and informative, an exemplary guide. Excellent evening, topped off with hot chocolate and a biscuit. Very good value for money.
We had a wonderful time. Sőlví was very entertaining, clear and informative. Dress warmly, but the bus was very warm so if you ever get too cold, you can get back on the bus.
What an amazing night! We did the small group tour were very blessed to have seen such a wonderful creation. Our tour guide (Sol) did such a fantastic job in guiding. He is very knowledgeable in different aspects about the northern lights (scientific facts, fun facts, different Scandinavian legends). Thank you for an incredible experience!
There were nine people in this tour and we were picked up by our driver named Albert at our Airbnb at 9pm where he then drove to multiple locations to find the northern lights. After an hour, we found a spot where we could see the northern lights. We then took many photos of the lights and also took many family photos. After taking the photos, the driver took us back to the airbnb. Overall, I would say I was excited for this experience/tour as I get to look at the lights in real life/with my own eyes.I was also amazed at how beautiful and cool the lights were. The only challenges we faced was finding the lights as we had to drive to a super far location to spot/find the lights but I enjoyed this tour/experience and definitely recommend this tour if you want to see the northern lights.
We had a really fantastic private tour with our driver-tour guide, Albert. He was very professional and gave us an amazing experience throughout the trip. Albert was well prepared, knowledgeable, and always made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. We were lucky enough to see the aurora on our first night, which made the experience even more special. We also did the Golden Circle and South Coast tours, and everything was well organized and enjoyable. Albert truly looked after us very well and made the whole journey smooth and memorable. I highly recommend this tour, especially with Albert as the guide. Overall, it was a great experience and absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.
Thanks to #Reykjavikexcursions and our guide Alexander, who delighted us with colorful tales of sagas and stories of the hidden people, as well as interesting insights into Icelandic politics, while we hunted for the Northern Lights. #NorthernLightSmallTour forever, unlike the traditional bus, with the smaller vehicle we were able to stop immediately as soon as we spotted the aurora and enjoy the wonder of an incredible natural spectacle with changing colors and shapes above our heads.
The small northern lights trip we did was a brilliant experience, very cold, wrap up warm. Sol who took us was amazing, so friendly, has a massive knowledge of everything northern lights. By the end of the night we eventually saw some was worth the wait 😀 would recommend Sol he was brilliant!! Thank you
Our tour guide Solvi was amazing! He was able to answer any questions our group through at him and instructed us how to get the best out of our experience! He let the cold people in on the bus, Took photos of family, and brought out Hot Choclate and Biscuits for everyone! Definitely would go with this company again!!
We toured with Solvie. 10/10 recommended not only the company but him as a guide. He knew when it was just right! We saw some of the best lights!!! Highly highly recommend
After hunting for an hour or so we got to experience the most fantastic northern lights display. Sólvi is a 10/10 guide!!
I’ve been on the tour every December for the past three years, and I hope to come again next year. The tours are well organized, and the guides are very professional and knowledgeable. I’ve been lucky to see the northern lights every time. This year, on December 12, we had Birta as our guide, and she was fantastic! She found a spot with a clear sky, helped everyone set up their cameras to take better pictures, answered all our questions, and took photos of everyone with the northern lights.
Be was just brilliant what a night. First location wasn’t great within 5 mins be had us back in the van on the way to location 2 within mins the sky was lit up from end to end with dancing green hues along with some pinks too. The photos we got were incredible with thanks to our amazing guide who also helped each person on the tour with camera settings and managed to get individual pics for each group in our party. I would 100% recommend this tour. I hope your as lucky as us not only with the lights them selves but with the guide. Thankyou Be for an unforgettable experience your passion and excitement made the night feel even more special than we could have imagined.
The guide was excellent, and first time northern lights was so emotional!!!Thank you for the professionalism and the nice time offered, will recommend you surely!
Although this was great we did not see the lights No fault of anyone at all the weather predicts and you do get to go on a larger coach for up to two years after Sol was great and detoured and really was hoping as much as us that we would see them did a great job keeping us entertained while we looked for them If we had seen them would be magical - if I was to do again I would have chosen the coach which is cheaper and has larger windows to see out of , and am sure the larger coach would also have adjusted the route as much as ours did in the hope to see them. A lot of money to spend when you don’t get to see them as I was paying for the four of us As it happens we saw them the next day on return from the golden circle tour and also again that night in Reykjavík! Literally walking to somewhere to eat and looked up Also saw them on the runway coming home ! So don’t be disheartened was still lovely as we had not seen Reykjavík in the light yet the terrain was covered in snow and just livery
Sol KNOCKED THIS OUT OF THE PARK. Thank you for providing us with everything we needed to make our trip ten out of ten. Northern lights were amazing. A beautiful experience led by a true professional. Thank you, Sol. You made our dreams come true.
This was a reschedule as the original tour (day before) was cancelled by the company due to weather / clouds. Standard pickup for this company. Picked up from nearest stop and transferred to bus terminal for the small group minibus. However, there were almost 25 people. It felt crowded on the minibus. We had expected around 12 maximum. I am not sure what additional benefit the small group tour provided over the main coach tour version. The guide was certainly knowledgeable and explained things well. He also offered hot chocolate and a biscuit / cookie. Obviously they have no control over the weather or solar activity, so that part is up to chance, but there are online sites that can advise about probabilities - the company uses these to maximise chances I understand. We were standing out for a while - warm clothes / thermals are a very good idea. The lights were not massively visible with the naked eye (when we went), but night /astro modes on smartphone cameras worked well. Recommend bring a tripod so you don't have to keep holding your phone, and ensure you can use it with gloves on to minimise fingers getting cold. We did get some decent pictures - slight editing for saturation and to tidy up really helped make them look great. Worth doing, but try and plan early in a trip so if you aren't successful you can try again later in the trip (if you fail to see any and they hadn't cancelled the tour in advance, you get a free replacement tour on the main coach). Worth doing overall, but maybe just the main coach version.
Our guide Alexander was fantastic. We really got lucky our first night and saw some amazing activities!! The tour is small and just want we wanted. The hot cocoa and Icelandic donuts was a nice touch!
17th / 18th Nov 2025: Our guide Solvi was a genuine star with a dry yet enthusiastic wit. He explained much of the folklore, history and science behind the Aurora whilst we travelled into the national park for a private little park away from the coach filled masses heading off for a communal viewing. The weather was clear and a strong show was forecast but slow to appear. We saw a huge convoy of coaches heading homeward as they gave up early. However, with Solvi's patience, his hot chocolate supply, a few spectacular shooting stars and my determination to get a good shot we hung around as some of our group retired to the minibus for warmth. Though the initial show was weak my camera picked it up well on a long exposure, which gave Solvi some relief even though he was disappointed as they weren't strong to the naked eye and hence he offered a free trip the following night. Just as we started out for home we quickly pulled off the road again to a truly spectacular show which made our day and I think Solvi's too. Many apologies to the all of the others on our tour who probably got fed up of me happily squatting till 1am in an icy car park in the middle of nowhere looking skyward with numb fingers whilst propping my camera up on a rock (my bloody tripod broke... grrr). I hope one of my photos attached is some recompense to all.
