Boat trip out after dark to look for the lights. Found the lights quite early on and they got stronger the longer we were there Guide indicated where to point camera to get the best view. Amazing !!! Took so many photos and they all came out...just using my phone. If you got too cold drinks and snacks available on the boat.

Itinerary
Enjoy the comfort of a warm, well-equipped boat on this 2–3 hour Northern Lights hunt from Reykjavík's Old Harbour. In just 15–20 minutes we leave the city lights behind and reach Faxaflói bay, perfect for watching the Aurora dance across the clear night sky above the mountains and coastline. Stay cozy on deck in our free overalls (kids' sizes included) while your guide shares the science, stories and folklore behind the Northern Lights from cultures around the world. If you need to warm up, head inside to the café/bar or settle in to watch our own original Northern Lights video that is full of facts. Don't want to fumble with camera settings in the dark? Don't worry — one of our crew is always taking photos throughout the night, so you can relax and enjoy the show, then check our Daily Diary afterwards for the shots. If the Northern Lights don't appear on your sail, you'll receive a free ticket to join us again on the next available night — valid indefinitely, so it's there for you even on a future trip to Iceland. Please remember that this tour is highly dependent on correct weather conditions.

The tour was fantastic. Our guide Joe, was informative and funny. The captain was great, we had some rough seas but never felt unsafe. We were lucky enough to see the lights. Would recommend.
Wonderful experience! The guide told us exactly where to look in the night sky and how to set our phones for better views of the aurora. The boat was very comfortable and it was a treat to be able to get a hot cup of coffee with Bailey’s. Be sure to bundle up so you can stay outside. Also, our friends wore gloves that could be used with cell phones.
Great trip. Got to see the lights. Lovely to see. Great guide on board telling what to look for and how to take a picture of them
Start to finish, excellent experience and really worth doing. All the staff were friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. The boat was clean, tidy and very comfortable and we did get to see the Northern Lights. Very happy indeed. As a tip, you can check in at the office during the day of your trip so you can take your pass straight to the boat in the evening
Excellent experience hosted by a professional and humorous crew. This tour operator is focused on delivering a very memorable cruise. The forecast G3 magnetic storm produced beautiful overhead lights in the darkness of the sea just outside of Reykjavik harbor. Our narrator's explanation of the experience (often humorous) added to the overall enjoyment. Most strongly recommend this option to avoid light pollution.
So ecstatic to view the Northern Lights almost as soon as the ship pulled out of the harbor, despite the forecast of low probability. Plus guide Celina provided a thorough, factual and very interesting commentary and some very practical tips on how best to capture the lights on our cameras. Totally awesome tour!
Did a northern lights cruise, boat left on time, was out a good couple hours, saw the lights, so bright even without using phone/camera. Recommend to dress very warm, they do offer overalls to also put on if you need them as an extra layer. The host was very informative, looking for and finding where the lights were, inside there was a area you could get drinks and snacks, I had hot chocolate and I thought the price extremely reasonable and the drink was very nice. There is a decent amount of seating. A great evening was had
First trip on the boat we were unable to see the Northern Lights due to the weather. Was informed that we could come back again at no extra charge. The next night was amazing!! Took many great photos!!! Great guide and very informative!!
Good comms from the start altho there was a hiccup over transfer to the harbour. Once on board the guide gave a constant informative commentary, identifying the best places to look and highlighting when activity was at its peak. Comfortable boat with a friendly crew. Northern lights were also cooperative so a key bucket list item also achieved! Highly recommended.
It was a great trip. The crew was great and we got to see the lights. I would highly recommend this tour. The boat had a nice warm inner cabin to sit in between light shows.
We were fortunate to see the northern lights for the whole 2 hours. We had just set off from the pier and there were the lights. The tour guide was exceptional in his knowledge and humour.
Patrick was informative, fun, and made the trip so great. The northern lights put on a real show for us, and the boat crew were helpful and engaging
Pack your winter coat, touque and warm mittens as you board the Andrea boat from 9-midnight to hunt for Aurora herself! We got lucky and she came out to dazzle us with an amazing display before we had to head back to the harbour. This company was friendly and even offered an on board photographer in case you wanted to live in the moment. There were many enclosed decks in case you wanted to warm up and say a prayer or two to the nature gods to send Aurora your way! This company also had an amazing policy where if you don’t see the northern lights, that they will let you back on a future tour (no expiration date) so that the next time you are in Iceland, you can come back and try again! This did not disappoint!
We booked for fri, it was canx, we rebooked for sat, easy process. Kept well informed V full boat, so not much room to move outside, but we saw the lights! Great movement and v hapoy group
Very good boat trip with excellent guide who told us all about the northern lights. Only problem was that the boat was very full as previous two evenings it had been cancelled due to bad weather
If you wish to see the Northern Lights, do your homework on the forecast, book it on day 1 of your stay and keep trying. I tried this tour 2 times (free of charge on the 2nd as we didn't saw it initially) and it didn't disappoint. Our guide was fantastic and she took amazing pics (credits to her!). Great crew too!
Overly ambitious about seeing the lights. They have a limited range to go where the lights are. A bus tour might be better
We got to see the Northern Lights and got very good information and advice from the tour guide. The only problem was that the boat was very crowded as the previous two nights tours had been cancelled.
Wonderful time, excellent at communication when cancelling for bad weather and making it clear what our options were. Most importantly we saw the northern lights!! The guide was constantly watching the skies, telling us about what is common to see in the harbour in regards to the lights. And seemed just as excited as us to see them moving. It was safe at all times, they had all important labels like where the life vests were very well labeled. I didn't buy anything but many people around us got a drink and had a very smooth experience. We also got warnings before a swell from another boat was going to make things rocky. As they said their photos were much clearer than mine and it was an easy process to download them. As is true for any kind of whale watching or northern lights tour book it for the first night you are in town and then keep that time slot flexible so it can be cancelled for weather /get another boat for lack of seeing it.
Had booked the Northern Lights cruise on our first night in Reykjavik to allow us have another opportunity to go if weather was not good/ trip cancelled etc. Fortunately we were in luck as we sailed out of the harbour on the ‘Andrea’ on what was a calm night with great clear skies. Tour takes about 2 hours as you have to go out sufficiently to escape the city lights. For the first hour we were treated to a fabulous natural light show across the sky….it is hard to describe how beautiful it was…..superb!. Skies then clouded over somewhat but our guide was really good and kept us informed on many aspects of Icelandic life/ tradition on our way back. We met some people later in the week who had tried in vain to see the Northern Lights…..would certainly recommend going out early in your trip to allow for nature.
Fantastic way to view the Northern Lights. We really enjoyed the boat ride out of the harbor. We them stopped and spent time looking up at the sky and seeing these amazing colore. I highly recommend the Northern Lights Boat Cruise
Had amazing time! Saw the lights and crew was amazing. We gave 4/5 because I felt boarding could have been better organized and the boat ran out of waffle mix which was included in our package
Northern lights has been on my bucket list since I retired. They were fantastic. Love the experience. Our guide, Patrick was very informative on how & why the light appears. To top off the evening he was a good entertainer. I highly recommend this trip to any one & everyone Thank you
This was ok. We didn’t get to see lights but that was due to weather. Wish we would’ve gone out further and wish boat went faster because it was kinda boring. But it was warm and comfortable and plenty of things to purchase if you wanted.
Enjoyed the tour. Lukas, our guide, was very funny and engaging. He kept people laughing with his dry humor, affect and fun facts trying to keep everyone entertained in lieu of a “northern lights” experience. Fortunately though, the clouds cleared and lights did come out and dance near a the end of the tour which was obviously a highlight and point of the tour.
The people were nice. They gave us a free drink. But it was supposed to be a 3 hour tour and we were back in 2. Also, there were no lights. I think I'd have rather had my money back than pay almost $400 for a 2 hour boat ride for 2. It was too cloudy. We heard other tours had cancelled. It should have been the same for us.
Got engaged on the Northern lights tour, crew could but have been more happy and friendly. Amazing views and pictures and special thanks to our super entertaining guide Patrick who helped set up the occasion as well as plenty of interesting facts about the Northern lights
Smoothly driven boat ride with expert staff made this tour a wonderful experience. The onboard snack bar was convenient, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable about both astronomy and the Aurora borealis.
The tour company was great and accommodating. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see the Northern Lights on our night, but it is nice to have the option to rebook.
Seeing the lights was Awesome! The staff on the boat was pleasant and helpful. There was plenty of food options if you chose to buy food.
Even though it was cloudy, the crew really made an effort to give us the best possible experience. We were lucky enough to catch some glimpses of the Northern Lights and appreciated that they offered us a chance to try again on another night. The boat was comfortable, with a warm indoor area, and they provided free coveralls to keep us cozy, along with sea sickness meds if needed. The crew was all super friendly and attentive, making the trip enjoyable despite the weather.
The northern lights cruise was nice! The boat was comfortable and we learned a lot about the lights. We did not see the lights the first time going, so we were given the chance to try again for free. Second time we saw them! We are so glad we saw them especially given the time we went. There’s less of a chance in April, but the guides had hawk eyes and looked for any type of action for us. So happy with the tour!
We went on the northern lights boat tour but it was very disappointing. There was a VERY SMALL glare of what could be considered as a northern light at the beginning of the tour and lasted around 2 minutes. After this, there was nothing else all night and with the 2 minutes of almost invisible light, they declared the tour successful and wouldn’t offer a reschedule for another day. They said that the tour would last 2-3 hours but at 2 hours exactly, we were parked in the port again regardless of the fact that we hadn’t seen almost anything. It takes some time to get away from the city lights and to get back so the time you really have to see an aurora is too short. They don’t really mind about customer satisfaction, and if you get to spot the lights or not, just marking the tour as successful for them. Luckily we had done other tours the nights before (bus tours with other companies) and were able to see amazing lights. The other companies guides were passionate about chasing the lights and that we had a good experience, looked for good spots and waited patiently as is needed to see the lights. I would not recommend a boat tour and I would not recommend the company. We also wrote an email the next day and their answer was rude.
I had wanted to go and see the Northern Lights for ages. The challenge was to find a way to do this without having to freeze for hours driving around without access to a bathroom. The boat tour was a perfect solution- 2 hours long and access to warmth and amenities throughout. Some aspects of seeing the lights are down to luck. We were very lucky! We sailed slowly out into the harbour and almost immediately, there was an arc of lights above us, like a pale green rainbow. As we sailed on, further away from the shore, the lights grew stronger, eventually waving and dancing, a beautiful green curtain across the sky. The lights we saw were spectacular and completely visible to the naked eye. A true lifelong memory!
After trying to find the northern lights ourselves, we decided to bite the bullet and purchase the tour. On the first night, although we did see a weak sighting, they decided that we would be able to come back another day free of charge, and we attended the following day. Our second visit was much more successful than the first night with plenty of sightings and even a couple of strong arches. The staff aboard the boats both nights were kind, informative, and very helpful - teaching all on board how and why the lights form, what each country’s ancestors believed they were, and were very accommodating for all levels (children and adults). Aboard the boats, there were hot and cold beverages, as well as snacks to keep us busy in between sightings. If you are lucky to see some lights on the tour, you don’t need to worry about taking photos yourself if you’d rather focus on the moment - the staff take photos and upload them for you to download free of charge. Overall, it was a really good experience and we’re all glad we chose to head out on the hunt with this company!
The office staff was not very welcoming or friendly. We did a whale watching tour and a northern lights tour. The whale watching was okay. But honesly I would not book a northern lights boat tour. Your moving to much to take pictures bc you are on a boat. All the photos come out blurry it was honestly a waste of money and time. The whale watching tour was over way overcrowded. We got shoved constantly to the point that we went back inside instead of staying out on one of the decks because of being shoved there just wasnt enough room to move around and see the whales. This company worries more about making money from its tourists then providing good experiences. I would go with another tour company. The only good thing I will say is the guy that was on both on tours on the boat was very friendly and helpful.
Great boat and guides. Excellent tour with a great viewing of the Northern Lights. Would do again! Did a great job finding and explaining the Lights.
AMAZING Northern Lights !! 2 hours cruise with Andrea along the coast line. A very excisting tour. Many thanks to Mother Nature and the Team of Special Tours :-)
The boat seats were not comfortable , and we were very tiered . So we fell asleep inside and did not watch the northern lights after all.
This cruise was the highlight of out trip to Iceland. Of course, we lucked out that the northern lights were especially active that night, but the woman who narrated the experience on the boat was exceptional in her attention to the sky, where to look, and when to look. She likes her job and it shows. In contrast to this tour, the next night we took a bus trip leaving at ten p.m. with the purpose of seeing the Lights. The person who monitored that tour could not hold candle to the woman on our boat tour. This just shows how important the tour guide is and how he or she affects the customer's experience.
Unfortunately no lights on this trip, but they offer you a free trip on another visit. Returning this spring when they do not do northern lights trips but they were happy to substitute a whale watch cruise. the customer service was awesome. can't wait to return to Iceland
The office staff were excellent in arranging our Northern lights just cruise which was cancelled due to unfavorable conditions. Unfortunately, we did not see the northern lights on our cruise. This company allows you to go on another cruise if such is the case. We didn’t opt for this the next night although a couple from our hotel did go (no northern light then either). Our boat cruise was very busy (probably because of the cancelled cruise the night before) so it was crowded - the reason we didn’t go back again. The tour guide was a bit corny - not the most professional - seemed a bit too casual and a lot of irritating banter and ad libs just to fill the time. They also said there was supposed to be a video shown but we never saw it and not sure whether it was played.
I can understand that they have to cancel the trip because of weather condition, but the back up plan to make up for this cancelation was to go to Whale Museum which the staff claimed it would be a good alternative. That was disappointing, it's not worth it. I could have stayed in California and visit the Monterey Bay or San Diego Sea world.
Friendly crew, great comfortable ship. Did not see the Aurora but was still a nice evening on the sea.
We took this trip 3 times as we didn’t see the Northern Lights on the first two nights and the ticket is valid until you do. On the third night the Northern Lights appeared and we had a display for about an hour. It was totally magical. The crew were very friendly and informative, especially Anneka. Thank you so much for a special time Photos were taken on an iPhone 12
The saddest experience I’ve had in quite awhile. I was eager to at least see a good star show if the Northern Lights disappointed. Way too much ambient light from Reykjavik to make this even remotely worthwhile. And triple-sad there are people who can’t identify the North Star and the Big Dipper. Save your money and go somewhere it’s truly dark. Nobody should be conned into thinking they are seeing true Northern Lights because you’ve taken a cell phone photo of the sky and “seen what the eye can’t see”. Super sad experience.
Booked this for the first night of our trip. Unfortunately did not see the northern lights. Tried to re book but was full which was disappointing given the guarantee they offer. Was some confusion over who we contact, whether it be Viator or the tour company.
Excellent trip, crew, ship, but… did’t see any northern lights at all. No complaints, was offered another trip for free.
Absolutely fantastic and memorable trip. Crew ere attentive and knowledgeable and made the experience thoroughly worthwile
