It was just my wife and I. The trip was well organized and the guide was entertaining and knowledgable. The warm clothing provided on board greatly enhanced the experience. I got to stay outside longer to take full aadvantage.

We went on the smaller of the two boats and it was an excellent excursion. We got the see the lights for about a half hour window and it was incredible. We weren’t very optimistic due to the weather during the day but I can’t fault it at all. Delayed one day due to weather but it was easy to reschedule and kept upto date by their website. Would highly recommend
Unfortunately there was zero lights …so it’s just a very late night boat trip rounder the harbor…bitterly disappointed
Amazing experience. Friendly tour team. The location of the boat was difficult to navigate, but once onboard the tour team stayed out to ensure that we did get to see the lights and we were not disappointed. Being a blanket as it does get cold.
Really nice trip!!! Clean boat with an amzing crew members. Very informative guide, and they also give you a dry overall if you need, against cold and rain if it happens. We had a good trip, unfortunately only seen a short glimpse of the aurora borealis, but still was amazing, and would go again! Also they give you the option to rebook and join for an other tour for FREE, if you don’t see the northern lights. This has to be requested by email, its an easy process. Overall, it was a supernice trip with super people!!! Enjoyed it!!
We just enjoyed the experience so much and thought that the crew was so great! We did the whale watching in the morning and then came back for the Northern Lights. Everything was great and parking was easy. I do wish they had given us the appropriate time to come back for the Northern Lights. We stood and waited for 1.25 hours, when that time could have been used to eat dinner or walk around Reykjavik. Otherwise, it was great.
Book in October March and April they cancel a lot to to weather we did not know this so in future, so definitely will do my research in future bookings spent a lot of money for this short trip and do have 2 out of 3 events cancelled was a bummer 😞
It was cancelled twice due to bad weather, IE snow. This weather is very typical, but if professional generally puts likelihood of seeing n.lights then we have to go with it. Make sure you check email several hours and times before trip.
Great tour. Our initial booking was canceled but we were rescheduled. The staff were very knowledgeable and accommodating. The Northern lights were amazing.
Great trip. We booked short notice and it was a great spur of the moment adventure. Was our first night in Iceland and we enjoyed it very much
It's fine, but i do not go again. It's to many people ( no spaces sit down). Not many spaces to stand up. I understand we need information about safety. But i think it's too much. And sometimes i couldn't hear about what talking guide ( about trip, about safety, so was not clearly). We didn't been lucky to see much of Northern lights, what it's understandable
Bad experience, they canceled the tour and didn't even warned. They put a notice on the office door that the cruise was canceled and there was no one to speak to and we weren't even notified.
We were all very excited to take the ship out into to the bay to see Northern Lights, unfortunately it was not our time. Although the company offered to continue taking us out until we seen them, the only night that was perfectly clear, they chose not to show themselves. For that and that reason only, we were all pretty disappointed. We did know there was always that chance and we chose to take it :-( Because we never did see them, we were told our tickets are valid for the rest of our lives when we return to Iceland again. Patrick, the narrator, did an absolutely phenomenal job. He not only explained what and where we should focus our sights but he also interacted with the guests. He seemed to be very knowledgable on the scientific portion of what creates the Northern Lights. Would definitely recommend with keeping in mind, there's always the possibility of them not appearing.
The Northern Lights Cruise was canceled due to weather conditions thru no fault of their own. However I recommend that you don’t travel in Feb since it’s the coldest & darkest month in the year. We had 4 out of 7 excursions cancelled due to weather and thinking we had a better chance of catching the Northern Lights during that time, we were completely wrong.
If the weather is compliant go by boat. The Northern Lights were clearly visible.! Hooray! One of the most exciting parts of our trip.
Very talented crew - kept us entertained while trying to locate the Northern Lights. Given the warning about rough seas, we did not experience any issues at all. The fact that we are able to try again due to the Northern Lights being a bust s a huge plus!
Very confusing with meeting point. Sent an email with a link to Google maps to meet and also same address but was not the correction location where we boarding the boat.
Seeing the Northern Lights! The guide on the boat was also fantastic, both entertaining and informative.
Knowledgeable punctual had already seen a great show had a great time. Full body life jackets supplied. Drinks available couldn't fault it
We took the tour twice, as we were not able to see the northern lights on out first attempt. The company gives you the chance to take the second tour for free and I only had to pay for the pick-up/drop-off, which is fair enough. The guides were amazing and experienced. A special shout out to Daniel and Hygga, who were fun and informative. I highly recommend this tour if you want to see the northern lights from a special place and, if you're not lucky at your first shot, at least you get to have a boat tour by night and see the starriest sky ever.
We did not manage to get on the boat as the company asked us to go to a different operator. When we went there and said we were looking for Reykjavik Sailors northern light tour we were sent to another office which was closed. We returned to the original boat but it had left! Only to find out that we were correct in the first place. We would have returned to complain the following morning but our flight was 7am and we left Reykjavik at 5am so had no time to rearrange. We asked for a partial refund as we understood we missed the boat but felt this was partly the operators fault as they sent us away initially. Very disappointed! We managed to see the light from the lighthouse, briefly but it was not what we had hoped for.
Had an original tour with a different operator for a Northern Lights experience that was cancelled at short notice so booked with Reykjavik Sailors for a cruise instead as there was availability. It was well organised and equipped with a great commentary throughout the cruise. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the lights during the cruise, but this is to be expected with a natural phenomenon, but we were given the option to rebook at any time in the future for free. Would definitely recommend this tour as it’s reasonably priced and gives you a great chance to view Reykjavik by night as well as the Northern Lights.
Although we didn't see the Northern Lights, the boat trip was amazing and informative. The crew aboard the boat was friendly and knowledgable. Since the Northern Lights are not guaranteed there's a 50/50 chance - but totally worth it
this a truly amazing and stunning sight to experience. this definitely a bucket list phenomenon to visit.
The trip was cancelled by the tour Operator citing weather conditions - which is totally understandable and is clearly indicated when booking that it is weather dependant. We were unable to make another reservation as the trip was not running the following night. The reason I have given a bad rating is that it has proved impossible to get any information from either Tripadvisor or Viator as to how to claim the refund due to us. I booked this trip in good faith through Tripadvisor - I got the cancellation email through Tripadvisor but there is no procedure outlined on the Tripadvisor website as to how I get the refund. My advice would be never to book a trip through Tripadvisor and to go directly to the Operator as they will refund you directly. Very very disappointed with the obvious reluctance to facilitate customers.

The boat was cold though they gave us protective gear to wear - but that was to be expected. What was not expected is that we did not go too far from the harbor and stopped so close to houses on a hillside that at one point I was blinded by a car's headlights which is not ideal you want to be in as dark a place as possible. The guide, though he was on our deck, was impossible to understand by any of us in the group of 8 ages 13 - 57 and spoke in a monotone - so it was not easy to even know what we were supposed to be looking at or for. Needless to say, we did not see any northern lights. When we tried to take advantage of the opportunity to go again if you don't see anything in the next two years guarantee, 5 of us heard back from the tour operator in a timely fashion, but 3 of us did not hear back until 8:16 pm when we needed to be on the boat by 9:30 - which was not enough time to get there. Overall felt like a scam where they pile up as many people on the boat as possible even if the probability of seeing anything is low and then don't really anticipate you will take advantage of the guarantee. My mother went on a different trip to a summit on land and they took her back 3x til she saw the lights and it was a better experience. I would not recommend this trip to anyone.

The boat ride was cold even though they provide special protective suits. That was to be expected. But the boat went not that far from the harbor to an area where there were so many lights on the hillside in front of us, at one point I got blinded by a car's headlights - so it was not conducive to seeing anything. Top that off with a monotone guide who, though he was on the deck with us, could not be understood by any of the 8 of us in our party - from age 13 - 57 - so it was really difficult to even know if we were supposed to be looking at one area or not. Needless to say, we did not see any northern lights. When we contacted the tour operator through Viator to take advantage of the you can try again within 2 years if you don't see anything guarantee, one of the reservations for 5 of us got approval at a reasonable time - but 3 of us did not hear back until 8:16 pm when we needed to be at the boat by 9:30 - which was way too late to travel there. All around it feels like a scam - they pile people on to boats even when there is no chance of seeing anything and then hope you don't take them up on the chance to try again. My mother went on a tour that took her on land to a peak and she was able to see them better - so overall, I think this boat is not a great option, and I would definitely not recommend it or do it again.

We picked this company for a variety of reasons. They had a smaller boat, family feel, offered warm clothing, etc. I never expected the lies, creepiness, and poor service. Last minute, they informed us they were pawning us off to a completely different company!!! This is not what I paid for! What if I did not check my email?! I wish I didn’t get the email because it gets worse from there. It was pouring rain and completely cloudy with NO chance of seeing the lights but since they wanted to keep our money, they would not give us a refund and we had no choice but to go out on this outdated impersonal ship. It went like 10 minutes into the harbor (still close to the light pollution from the city) and just sat there. Then a very very creepy guy kept awkwardly talking into the loudspeaker about his family, chanting the happy birthday song just in case somebody had a birthday, and reading poetry he wrote. This was a horrible horrible experience and the trip should have been canceled!! Do not use this company, they will push you off onto other operators. When I emailed them after to ask for a refund, they said that weather can change and they didn’t know. That is garbage.
The Northern Lights Cruise we took in February was cancelled on the first night due to weather, but they transferred us to the following night when the boat did go out. We saw the lights dimly and briefly (for about 15 minutes total) and when I asked about why they appeared so dimly, the guide told me "Oh, this is better than most nights, actually." So, while you cannot guarantee anything that is purely a natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights on our trip were a huge let down. It was similar to all of the drama created for the Y2K bug prior to moving into the new millennium... a lot of hype about absolutely nothing! The tour guides were pretty knowledgeable and the boat was in good shape. The weather was rough and snowing at times, and it was absolutely frigid standing on the deck, but we knew that going into it! Just make sure you wear lots of very warm clothing! I hope that others have a better experience than we did to see the mysterious Northern Lights, but for us the only mystery is why we spent so much money going to Iceland to see something as lackluster as what we saw! There are way better things in Iceland to see, and pretty much all of them are guaranteed to be there when you arrive. We learned our lesson: DON'T go just to see the aurora borealis, or you could be really disappointed.
For anyone dubious of seeing the Northern Lights because you’re concerned it will just look like ‘cloud,’ it’s not like that at all! Its an absolute must. I was debating whether to go on a Northern Lights Tour via jeep or by boat but I am so pleased that we decided to go on the Cruise. I would 100% recommend going by boat. You are taken to the middle of the ocean and away from any light pollution to give you a real chance of seeing the lights. At first it was cloudy but the boat waited by the mountains as this was clearly going to be our best chance of seeing them. After about 10 minutes, it started! They didn’t disappear for at least an hour after that and the boat waited throughout. You could go on to the top deck and view them and it was so amazing. We left at around 9pm and was back at the Harbour at around 11.30pm. There is also hot drinks and waffles available for reasonable prices throughout the trip. I would 100% recommend! Something I will never forget!

The cruise was very nice with a beautiful boat and gracious staff. We were not able to see the lights but they offered to take us at any point in the future to hopefully see them!

Very welcoming and well organised, we didn’t see the northern lights but found Sarah’s commentary excellent and informative, we were looked after and kept warm in the flotation suits. The lights teased us, but we were offered another free trip just because the lights didn’t show up, great value

This was incredible! At first the lights were faint, but then they came out in force and were dancing across the sky! I was surprised at how close to Reykjavik we could still see the lights as we came back in to the harbor. The tour operators even stayed out a little later than usual because the auroral activity was so good even though the KP was only 1.67 and the moon was still bright. And the hot chocolate on the boat was delish! Highly, highly recommended.

very poor tour ,we traveled only two hour just the time to go far from the port and to come back,no pick up,no organization ,hmmmm i did not like it

Fortunate enough to see a glimpse of the northern lights on the way out of the harbour. The overalls provided are a must as it's very, very cold but a cruise is better than a coach trip in my view.

We were prepared that we might not see the Northern Lights, and sure enough, we didn't, despite a positive forecast. The Reykjavic Sailors' admin person and ship's crew were friendly and did their best to keep us informed and entertained, although obviously there's little to see except coastal lights at night.

Our main issue with the trip was with the dangerous, un-gritted surfaces on the approach to the Reykjavic Sailors' offices, which made it necessary to take a cab adding to the cost of the trip on the way back. Also the offices were quite hard to find in the dark, so the whole approach to the trip was actually quite stressful. I'm over sixty but reasonably fit and mobile - can't imagine how it would work for someone with less mobility.

We were very fortunate to see this incredible show of nature. An hour and half into the tour, we only saw weak form of northern lights. Two shooting stars crossed the sky, my daughter prayed to see the lights. It showed up almost immediately from 3, 4, 9 and 11 o'clock of the sky, slowly forming and bursting. It was absolutely spectacular and wonderful to see the wonder of the nature. The show continues even as the tour ends and the boat pulls in the harbor. The staff is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They were caring and handing out motion sickness pill The sea was very rough. For a big man like me, my advice is to take 2 pills. We had a wonderful time. The best place to see Northern Lights is in Iceland!!! A truly incredible experience.

Eh. We didnt see the lights which is nature, not the tour. But the boat itself is kind of boring. There were snacks and some booze for purchase but one of our fellow travelers described it best I feel like Im on a floating cafeteria.

we were lucky to see the northern lights on our first day! The weren't very vivid though, but still. The Guide was very nice and told a lot of useful information and stories about Aurora Borealis. It was freezing cold that night but still worth it.

I'd definitely recommend going with Reykjavik Sailors for the Northern Lights tour. This my second attempt at seeing them in Iceland after doing a bus tour a few years ago. I went on similar nights to the other recent reviews but have a bit of a different take on it. Our trip was booked for November 22nd and we were also called to say it was off and could go by bus then called again to say the boat was back on. We also met at the office and were driven to the boat a few piers along. Would have made sense to say meet at the actual pier but no big deal in my eyes. The boat that was used for the tour was big and comfortable. The seas were very choppy and lots of people (including my girlfriend) were being sick but it didn't bother me too much. When I went to get a beer, I was given one for free! Sickness tablets are also available and the staff were really helpful with the people who were sick. We didn't see the lights unfortunately but went back the following night. On the next night, we went on Reykjavik Sailors own boat which was cosy and had a bar with beer/coffee/snacks etc. Anyway, the main point being, we saw the lights! Was delighted to see them at last. Again the waters were rough but we'd been warned about that both nights. Don't see much of a reason for the recent negative reviews. Would recommend.
We had a very successful Northern Lights cruise with Reykjavik Sailors. The Lights were visible the moment we set sail and lasted an hour. They filled the sky with color and motion, wrapping the Big Dipper nicely, and enchanting our vision. The guide, Olaf, was knowledgeable and personable. He and his crew really extended themselves to facilitate our participation, with one of us using a wheelchair. Ahead of time, Monika was incredible, answering every question we sent by email promptly, with clear and detailed information. Note the generous policy of vouchers for repeated sailing if no Lights are sighted on a given night.
Took the Reykjavik Sailors Northern Lights tour October last week with friends and it was amazing. The crew were super nice and accommodating. There were cold weather suits available though we didn't use them. There were also refreshments on the boat to purchase. We were fortunate enough to see a bright display and it was the most beautiful thing we've ever seen. Unnar took great photos and sent them to the entire tour group. Thanks Unnar, Jorge, and crew!

We were so grateful to see the Northern Lights. It is definitely a bucket list item. The crew was so kind and the lights danced for us that night. Great memories!

Very good, pity lights didn't come out to play, but tix still valid for 2 years

We got lucky with the weather and saw the lights! The crew was knowledgeable, pleasant, helpful. A great experience

The crew was friendly and knowledgeable. The lights were beautiful. I would do this again.

Heavily dependent upon the weather. The Icelandic Meteorology website has information on weather and on predicted Northern Lights activity levels. Check this forecast before you book.

An excellent tour with an attentive pleasant guide. Everything was on time and well organised. And we even saw the Northern Lights.
