It was beautiful. Small groups so it was more enjoyable. We did a pick up but wish we knew we didn’t actually need it since we have a car.

Itinerary
Meeting point is at BSI Bus Terminal
We visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

Dress for cold. Wear gloves as rocks are sharp and you may need to use them to balance. Need to wear solid hiking boots not sneakers
The guide was very informative. The colours were spectacular. They provided helmets with lights and walking sticks. I am 75 and was initially concerned it would be too dark and/or the terrain too treacherous, but neither was the case. I suggest wearing good hiking shoes and a rain coat. Apparently it is always wet inside.
Easy transfers from Reykjavik and a short drive to the Lava Tunnel. Our guide was very informative about the history of the tunnel and had a great sense of humor. The formations were incredible! The total darkness was a little eerie when the guide switched off all the lights! A once in a lifetime experience to explore this marvel of nature that is over 5,000 years old!
This tour was not inexpensive but one of the more informational tours with a unique experience. I enjoyed the tour and felt it was worthwhile. The tunnel is very wet and cool because it’s underground, so bring a rain coat and some nonslip footwear. You need to be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces. The path is solid, but uneven and wet. The amount of time given worked well. We had enough time to explore the shape in our own after the informational portion of the tour. Staff were knowledgeable and attentive. I wouldn’t recommend this for people with balance issues or claustrophobia, but otherwise it’s a great experience that you can enjoy even on a day with less than ideal weather above ground. Photos show the typical path.
Our guide Ben in the Lava Tunnel was both entertaining and informative. The tunnel was an interesting visit. A helmet and walking sticks are provided. If you are sometimes a little giddy or unsure on uneven grounds use a walking stick. The morning transfer would have been more engaging if the day’s itinerary was explained and if the driver had indicated a willingness to provide any information about Iceland and or any tips for the tunnel tour.
Neat experience with good guide. Amazing geology, with good discussion from guide. Recommend it, unless claustrophobic
Guide was funny, engaging, and knowledgeable. The cave itself is worth a look once. Be warned, however, that this is tour is more physically demanding than described. Uneven slippery footing and lots of stairs. Dress as recommended. I think the price was a little high for what you get, even with Icelandic prices.
Being inside of a lava tunnel was an incredible experience. However, the tour was very short and slightly underwhelming. Our guide mentioned there was a longer and more expensive tour that went deeper into the cave, which is probably the experience I should have chosen. Our guide was FANTASTIC -very charismatic and knowledgeable. The beginning of the tour was a little chaotic - the bus driver didn’t check who was on the bus. We entered the admission office and just stood around for a while waiting for instruction. Finally someone came out and told us to wait for the guide then he/she would tell us what to do. When we finished the tour, there was a lot of confusion about the time and which bus would take us back to the city. People began to panic because we were told we missed the bus then were later told the bus was running late. Normally I wouldn’t have minded waiting, but we had an appointment lined up after. But, the cave was beautiful.
Short bus ride from Reykjavik. Take in the unique scenery. The lava tunnel experience is a real eye opener to mother nature and the powers that are possible.
Stay away from this tour if you desire any sort of actual learning or cave tunnel experience. Our entire tour group was elderly and we spent 50 minutes to go a few hundred feet into a cave and pause for 10+ minutes waiting for these frail adults to catch up. Entire tunnel consists of flat rocks cut by man and metal staircases. Despite that, two of them got hurt and had to leave. The last 15 minutes was spent talking about asinine stuff to entertain the senior citizens. Would give this 0 starts if possible, complete waste of time and rip off. The bus rides were longer than time in the tunnel.
The tunnels were rocky in most places. Take the walking stick they offer if you are at all unsteady on your feet. I was glad I grabbed one.
This was one of my biggest draws to coming to Iceland and I was not disappointed! You get to go pretty deep into the cave and our guide (unfortunately don’t remember his name) was very informative and witty throughout the whole tour. Despite being afraid of caves, this was a really cool adventure! It’s about an hour for the whole thing which I thought was a good amount of time to explore. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes to see cool rocks.
A fun and interesting shorter tour of lava cave tunnel. Safety is not a concern as everything has been thought of ahead. Our guide was funny, thoughtful and informative! I missed her name but she was fabulous!
This tour was wonderful. The transportation was seamless, the bus driver was pleasant and the tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, amusing and professional! The actual cave was a bit challenging for individuals with bad knees or other physical issues so people should assess this prior ti signing up for this tour.
This is a fun activity. The cave/lava tunnel is very cool to see. Our guide was informative and personable. The bus driver was even kind enough to ask us where we wanted to be dropped off back in the city. It’s is definitely a unique experience that I’d recommend. With that said it does take about 40 minutes to get to the cave and 40 minutes to get back. So of the nearly 3 hour tour, about half is on the bus.
Great tour of the lava tunnel. Pick up directions may be vague. Look for transfer buses and ask the driver for the correct bus.
Great tour! Ask for Benjamin Oskar provided very accommodating transport, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area
Pick up was on time and easy at bus stop requested, we did have to transfer to the tour bus after pick up, but that was quick. Scenic drive to lava cave and interesting tour in cave, would recommend!
Guide was great and provided good information and was very enthusiastic, well spoken and knowledgeable.
This is not a tour for anyone who is older or has any kind of balance issues. We hated this tour. You climb over slick, dangerous rocks. It rained in the cave the entire time which made it even more dangerous. There is no warning on the site about the danger but there should be.
I am 78 and wasn't comfortable doing so I went back and another guide took me . He was very kind and considerate
The lava tunnel was one of the highlights of Iceland. Our guide was very knowledgeable (she has a degree in Geology) and entertaining. She was the best of all the tour guides I had in Iceland, even though it was only a one-hour tour. We learned a lot more about the tunnels than I expected. They are quite impressive. You do have to be fairly mobile, however, as the path is rocky. I wouldn't go if you have trouble walking off-road. It is a short tour (only an hour in the cave), but more impressive than many of the other sights.
This is a public bus service, which is not clearly explained in the instructions. You have to go to a pickup bus stop and get on the appropriate bus, that has no markings. The driver does not call you, like all other tours or have a sign or wait for you. We missed the morning tour, and had to reschedule for the afternoon, which screwed up our day. The Lava tunnel was not worth it. Recommend you pass and Viator send me a refund.
It was a fun tour, good amount of time for experiencing the lava tunnel. Transportation to and from went very smoothly. I would classify the walk into the tunnels - easy to moderate as there are parts of the walk that are uneven. Tour guide was knowledgeable, funny, and knew how to read the crowd.
It was an extremely rocky walk with many stairs and wet surfaces. You do get dripped on as you go. But I would so do it again as it was well worth the effort. NOTE: It is not for anyone with any difficulty walking or with balance issues! The guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the natural beauty and geology of the lava tunnel which always adds to the enjoyment of any tour. Thanks so much!
Don’t go on this tour if you have issues walking on steep, wet, rocky paths. It is NOT all flat. It’s cool in the tube. We go on lots of cave tours, this one was nice, guide was great, they have bathrooms and snacks for purchase.
Make sure they pick you up at your pick up place. They didnt pick us up at all. Now we're fighting to get money back.
Very interesting, but very cold inside the tunnel. Our guide was very informative and the rock formations were very beautiful.
The Lava Tour was excellent but the transfers from Reykjavik were a mess. First we were to be picked up at the cruise terminal in a marked bus with the tour name on it and it turns out it was a just a transfer bus that took us to the BSI terminal where we then transfered to another bus. Would have been helpful to have known that even though I sent a message the night before for clarification and only received a vague, form letter response. The Lava Tour was excellent but we had to wait 45 minutes to be picked up as the driver was delayed picking up a separate group who were doing ziplinjng.
While beautiful and very interesting, this is not for those with balance or walking issues. My aunt had to turn around as she was not able to walk thru the tunnel due to the uneven surfaces, based on the photos, I thought the entire length had the metal walking path, and it didn't. Turning the lights off was definitely sensory altering.
The experience was great and the explanation of and opportunities to see the flow up close was amazing. However, it was cold and very wet-the ceiling drips constantly. And the path is uneven but navigable with the provided hiking sticks.
Tour itself in caves was excellent. Transportation to and from was less than great. But started out 20 minutes late and at end we had to wait additional 30 minutes for bus to come. Some others missed their next planned tour because of hour delay
This was a good experience but was not as fantastic as the other things we did in Iceland. Would recommend only if you have additional time in the country.
The excursion was great. The transfer however was not! We were on a cruise ship that docked in Reykjavik. I booked the tour with other friends that got picked up at the pier. My ticket was a pick up from the bus terminal. When I called to change the location, I was told that it would cost an additional $66. The irony was that that my friends ended up at the bus terminal. The bus picked them up at the pier and took them to the bus terminal. Not sure why I was asked to pay the extra fee Very disappointing! Would recommend the excursion but not through Viator.
Loved our guide. So much fun, informative, and knowledgeable. Beautiful hike. Hope my photos come out. Thank you.
Reykjavik Excursion busses say they are for pickup and drop off but didn't have me registered. Tried calling per email, but no one answered. Now it is 9:17 am so I guess you were a no show.
What a great tour of the Lava Cave. Our Guide was Great and had a great sense of humor. We learned a lot and a must to especially for those who love geology, nature exploring.
Excellent tour and guide. Dress in layers for damp, cool with some dripping water. Good footwear essential as it is rocky and damp. Light gloves useful. Save this until near the end of your trip to mitigate impact of an unlikely fall.
I thought this was so interesting! I wish we did the longer tour to go deeper into the tunnel. Of course, the men loved wearing the hard hats with a light, but learning about how the tunnels were forms and how many thousands of years ago was my favorite part.
The tour was fantastic, the guide at the tunnel was very knowledgeable and made the tour enjoyable. The pick up location was changed 12 hrs before, we had to walk and stand in the rain, waiting for the bus. We paid the higher price to get picked up at the hotel instead of a meeting point.
Be prepared for a walk over wet, uneven stones. Good sneakers or hiking shoes a must! Well worth it to experience this natural wonder. The guide was very knowledgeable and as a retired Earth Science and Biology teacher, I found the formation of this natural wonder fascinating!
It was a good way to kill time Before our flight, but it isn’t like the photos Still was cool to see but wouldn’t make it my “main” event of the day
I didn't know how difficult the path was going to be.. so I declined a walking stick. When we entered the tunnel I was having great difficulty getting around. One of the tour guides coming out of the tunnel noticed the difficulty I was having so she helped to walk me in to where our guide stopped. She then went and got some walking sticks and brought them back out to me. I was still having an issue walking even with the walking sticks. When our guide noticed the difficulty I was having he offered and held my arm the rest of the way. Without these two hero's I would have quit less than halfway through but thanks to the help they gave (especially our guide) I was able to get thru the tunnel. Big Kudos to our guide (I wish I listened to his name) he was able to turn a potential loss of experience into a big win! Thank you
The lava tunnel itself was very good and interesting. A little difficult to walk in the tunnel over the wet rocks. However, we were bused to/from the tour and the driver didn't speak to us at all. Not your typical tour.
Wonderful experience touring the lava tunnel. We had a great guide. Unfortunately, we didn’t get her name. I would recommend it as a must see in Reykjavik.
Very interesting and educational experience. It was raining and dripping inside so dress appropriately. Hiking sticks were provided and helpful (but limited). Consider hiking boots as parts are over Rocky areas (most on metal ramps). Very happy we did this trip. Reykjavik excursions staff at BSI terminal were extremely helpful.
We were picked up and dropped off at Hotel Eyja, which we appreciated. The actual tour departed from the bus station. The drive time to the Lava Tunnel was about 45 minutes, providing a nice scenic drive. Several busses arrived but were about 20 - 30 minutes apart, so there was not overcrowding. The guides provided safety helmets (Required) and walking sticks (if desired) The guide led us through the tunnel and provided very good information about the flow of the lava, why it was so boulder strewn and the basis for the various colors in the rocks. He was very knowledgeable and presented the information in clear and informative manner. He also managed the time and pace to make it easy for group to stay together. If you are looking for the smooth tunnel formation like Hawaii, this will be totally different. Also note that the tunnel will be cool and damp with dripping water throughout. Also note that there can be some rocks to step on/over and there will be several steps up and down with one set being about 20 steps each way that will be considered steep if you have bad knees. This tour is a good initiation to the geologic history and formations on Iceland, The guides provide a good history/explanation. Our group found it interesting and worthwhile.
Firstly, instructions to find our guide was not clear. We were taken by shuttle bus to another mini bus with the most grumpy driver ever. On the whole of the journey no information offered. The complete opposite to a previous tour. Our guide at the tunnels did give us information once we were inside the tunnels but sketchy information prior. The lava tunnels were very wet. We were hurried through the last part as the guide was concerned our driver would be cross at having to wait.
It is an expensive tour. Paid almost the same amount as for the full day South coast tour. One hour in the cave was not worth time spent and money paid. Very slippery path in the cave. Do not recommend for seniors.
