Iceland Volcanic Eruption Area Helicopter Tour From Reykjavík

I flew with Glacier Heli Iceland twice to try and see a volcanic eruption. The second time, it worked out. The pilot provided great information, and the view was breathtaking

We have booked with Glacier Heli , it was an excellent experience, better then I expected. The pilot was so experienced and we had a stable take off and landing. We have booked for 4 pm , but the tour operator ( Glacier Heli) went the extra mile to call us before time and tell us the weather condition would be not a good for flying at our chosen time . We loved their initiative as we would not be able to do the trip the next day....Well recommended.

You need to have good weather, so you get the chance to land on the eruption site. Altogether much recommended experience worth the money for sure.

That helicopter tour exceeded our expectations. The pilot was friendly and very knowledgeable about Iceland’s volcanic history. Not only did we fly over all the volcanoes, but they also made a short stop so we could walk on one of them—which was a very pleasant surprise. I definitely recommend booking with this company; they were communicative throughout the entire process as well.

First of all I got very lucky! I was headed to Iceland to see a local world know band playing in their home environment. Upon landing, I saw an opportunity to explore a volcano by the air. Wow! Amazing and what an adventure. Plus, being quite tall I was placed in the best possible seat! Up front!!! The staff was all about safely, comfort, and convenience. I don’t know it’s taken me this long to write about it, but the few people who stumble across my Instagram tell me how lucky I was to get that your last minute. If you have a chance, do it!!!! Phenomenal experience even without seeing any molten lava flow. We had a beautiful day for our first helicopter ride and it was definitely one of the highlights of our first trip to Iceland! We are glad we booked it on our second day after seeing the Lava Show on our first day. We felt safe with our pilot, Phillip, who was also an amazing tour guide! Being able to walk out on the harden "newer" lava fields was memorable!

We had a really fun experience in early August. Short but exhilarating flight over the lava fields and stopped to look around. Great guide.

Hey friends, Here a Venezuelan, as a Southamerican and Caribbean man, all life dreaming to know Iceland. I didn’t know about this activity to do in the country, But for real was the best experience. Speedy was a good host and the Hungarian Pilot is so friendly and professional. I think it’s been one of the best activities that I made on 2026. Guys of course I will be back in Iceland. A short helicopter trip over the site of a number of recent eruptions, with a landing on a lava flow from the past few years. This was a great chance to get a look at the landscape around a volcano up close. Our pilot was very knowledgeable, giving lots of information about the various eruptions, and how it affects those living nearby. We were even allowed to take a few small rocks, as our pilot said they would have more soon enough. Our flight took us over several interesting volcanic features, including craters, small cones, and active steam vents. The helicopter was also small (four passengers and pilot), allowing us to fly very close and bank for better views. Highly recommended for volcano enthusiasts!

You are able to see so many different landscapes of Iceland in under one hour. The best part is the tour of volcanos and being able to touch down and walk in a lava field! Our guide was knowledgeable and patient with our questions, and even helped with photos!!!!

The helicopter tour was an amazing experience to see the volcanic eruption, the pilot explained things and flew over the eruption several times to make sure passengers on both sides of the cabin would get a good view. Our departure was delayed a bit while waiting for the fuel truck to arrive, but once we got going it was a geographer's (tourist's) dream to fly over an erupting volcano. Professional but personable service by ground staff and pilot. Thank you!

One of the highlights of the trip, for sure. Our original booking was a washout with the weather, so they worked with us to reschedule while we were still in town (and maybe with a partner operator? not sure). GREAT TRIP. the pilot, Thor, was very knowledgeable of the site, and he landed us right in the middle of the lava fields (only steam areas during our visit). fabulous experience.

Seeing Iceland from the air was breathtaking. The volcanic landscape looked otherworldly and gave me a completely different appreciation for the island's geology. The pilot was professional, knowledgeable, and made the experience unforgettable.

we planned our trip well before the eruption but it was in progress when we arrived and when checking in to our hotel they recommended this helicopter tour.... it was amazing. I was concerned re safety (brought my son) but I was impressed with the attention to detail and clear interaction with air traffic control and contact with other craft in the area. This was impressively coordinated not a quickie tour but an organized effort with exceptional interaction and coordination. Tour was long and we just happened to time it for around sunset adding to the spectacle. One of the top lifetime travel events. enjoyed watching and got some incredible video on my phone but it was the visual that stays with me. careful, safe, longer and more detailed then I expected with tour over prior eruption areas as well from someone who really seemed to care.

Our pilot was Arron and he was exceptionally perfect. Super windy but always felt safe and secure. Be flexible because weather is very unpredictable and safety is always first. We had so many climate challenges with a blizzard, a snow storm, icy roads but we made it to this amazing place. The. Helicopter ride was the highlight. Our pilot made it so special with his infectious enthusiasm. Beyond fabulous

The weather was bad so unfortunately the tour was cancelled. We got a call in the morning and the operator tried to fine another timeslot. As we could not find another slot we got a full refund. The process was handled very well. We hope for better weather next time!

Our pilot was great, he kept in touch with us when unfortunately we had to reschedule the original day due to the weather not cooperating. He told us about the area we visited, types of eruptions, time frames ans the flight was smooth. I'm bad with names but I believe he said his name was Aleksander and he's from Norway. We had hoped to see some actual lava like in the pictures, but alas, our timing didn't cooperate with that! It was looking like there would be another issue eruption soon, though.

It was a wonderful experience! Really nice to see a volcano and the impact of recent lava flows on the environment. I highly recommend booking this tour at the beginning of your trip to Iceland, as the weather is really unpredictable and the trip can be postponed for a day or two. But the wait is definitely worth it.

Awesome - you think you see incredible stuff on the ground (and you do) but taking to the air is super special!! We saw volcanic craters and lakes and were awed by the sheer scale of land around the volcano. We got to land on, then walk on, the lava field which was a once in a lifetime experience. Our pilot was excellent, she explained everything we were looking at and provided a smooth flight for us - money well spent.

If you want to see red, glowing lava then book a date/time as soon as you know you are going to be in Reykjavik for a couple of pre-determine dates. I did not do this early enough so all the potential evening/night flights were taken by others. My original date/time was postponed due to poor weather. Without hesitation Glacial offered the same trip at 0800 the following morning. - brilliant! Easy flight with a helpfull pilot who was willing to answer questions as we flew over the volcano system and the "Blue Laggon Geothermal and Lagoon complex" located just south of Keflavik Airport. You can see how the active volcano (a line ridge type develops) On the way back two magical moments as we flew back 1 An updside down rainbow of more than 180 degrees 2 A small pod of whales were feeding on a shoal of fish below

Absolutely an amazing experience. Volcano views, lava fields, geothermal areas and the city and landscape. Our pilot could have been a movie star. Better than Tom Cruise in competence, looks and kindness. I was nervous but felt safe always. This one was a very good decision!

The trip was so short & overrated in Viator, i was not expected that. they are not organized at all, called me many times trying to change the time already confirmed. though the pilot was very friendly & professional but the company is not up to me expectation & my experience with Viator

This helicopter tour of the volcanoes was amazing and excellent! We all loved and were spellbound with the experience. Landing and walking on the lava flows of a recent eruption, and flying over many craters and older lava flows was completely fascinating. And the views of Reykjavík and surrounding sea and mountains spectacular. Lena our pilot was excellent, professional and engagingly friendly, helpful and a great pilot. We loved Lena as much as we loved the tour.

Worth it! It is surreal to see Iceland from above, but then to also land on a laval field and be close to a dormant volcano?! Amazing!!
