Itinerary
Your route takes you next to Geysir, sometimes known as The Great Geysir. As one might guess from its name, this is a geyser which has been known to send eruptions of hot water and steam over 200 feet into the air! It's been dormant for a while, but could become active again at any time. Its neighbor, Strokkur, is much more predictable, erupting every 5-10 minutes! Note: The tour is over 150 miles long, with more than 100+ audio stories, and takes about 5-7 hours to complete. New, Lifetime access, no expiry. Use it anytime, on any trip, as many times as you want.
The settlement of Iceland is generally believed to have begun in the second half of the ninth century, when Norse settlers migrated across the North
The first major landmark you'll see is Helgufoss, a serene and sparkling waterfall at the end of a quick hiking trail. It's just far enough from major tourist destinations to offer not just some great scenery, but also a bit of peace and quiet. Afterward, you'll hear more about Viking traditions like music, dances, and poetry.
Then you'll have the chance to visit Thingvellir, a historic site and national park boasting some of Iceland's most incredible landmarks. The park occupies a rift valley created by the separation of tectonic plates, giving it a dramatic geology like nowhere else on earth. Here, you'll be able to hop out of the car and walk through the park, admiring its many wonders.
Next, you'll reach one of Thingvellir's main attractions: Öxarárfoss. This pristine waterfall flows from the river Öxará over the Almannagjá. The pool at its base is as clear as the river which feed it, but legend has it that the waterfall turns red on New Year's Eve every year.
Then there's the Silfra Dive Site, a phenomenal spot for underwater adventures. Here, you can dive and snorkel right where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Once you continue beyond the park, you'll hear all about the Aurora Borealis and the ancient legends people created to explain those northern lights. You'll also get to know some of Iceland's most famous mythical creatures, such as trolls and the Hidden People.
Up next is an essential Iceland experience: the Geothermal Baths. These natural steam baths, fed by hot springs, aren't just soothing. They're also packed with minerals that the locals swear carry healing properties. Past these, you'll hear how Vikings kept themselves squeaky clean. Then you'll get to know Egil, a viking folk hero (or anti-hero, depending on who you ask) whose fascinating tale blends history and mythology together into an iconic Viking saga.
Your tour of Iceland's famous Golden Circle begins in picturesque Reykjavik. From here, you'll drive out into the stunning Icelandic wilderness toward the island nation's most beautiful sights. As you drive, you'll also hear tons of history and mythology, including the settlement of Iceland, Viking traditions, and Norse myths of Loki, Odin, Thor, and more!
Much-visited geothermal geyser that erupts every 8–10 minutes & reaches heights of 20 meters.
After that is one of the Golden Circle's most popular attractions: Gullfoss. This 100-foot waterfall really earns its name, which means "Golden Falls" in English. Once you're done admiring this impressive waterfall, you'll hear about the important role of magic in ancient Viking mythology and culture. Then you'll find out what ultimately became of Egil the folk hero and learn the truth behind a couple stereotypes about Vikings.
As you drive, you'll next have the chance to visit the Secret Lagoon. This is one of the best geothermal pools in Iceland and is absolutely beloved by locals. Whether or not you opt for a soak, your tour will introduce you next to a particularly bizarre Icelandic folk tale, then explain the importance of greenhouses on this remote, rocky island.
Getting hungry? Friðheimar is your next stop. This country-style, family-run restaurant offers tomato-based dishes from onsite greenhouses. If you plan to stop by, however, you should call in advance, as this little establishment is remarkably popular.
Your route brings you next to Skálholt Cathedral, one of the most important historic sites in Iceland. This church dates all the way back to 1106! The current structure isn't that old, but the land and its history most certainly are. Continuing past the cathedral, you'll hear lots more about the role of religion in Iceland and the sometimes bloody conflicts it created during the Viking Age.
Sólheimar is an eco-village in Iceland and is renowned for its ecological, artistic, and international community ethics. Its current population size is about 100 people. The village of Sólheimar locates in the south-western part of Iceland, the municipality of Grímsnes- og Grafningshreppur.
Finally, you'll reach Kerid Crater. 3,000 years ago, a huge volcano collapsed, leaving behind this impressive crater. It's a must-see spot, and a great location for photos! After visiting the crater, you'll head back toward Reykjavik. Along the way, you'll get acquainted with modern day Iceland, some more recent history, and what the future might look like for this unique nation. Your tour will conclude just outside Reyjavik.

The self guided tour was amazing , it told us exactly where to go and gave us great options that we would otherwise not know to stop at. The history and tales of Iceland added a wonderful touch! My 16 yrs old son was attentive the whole time and that a feat! Lol .
Well worth it. Very informative and easy to follow. Best thing we did was hire a car and follow the app. Diverted slightly to see different sites but stuck to the tour as much as possible. Beautiful country well worth visiting. Absolutely loved it. Had the heaviest snow fall since 1921. Was not expected but very welcome.
This guide is wonderful and surpassed my expectations. Don’t hesitate to get this one. The app is excellent as well.
Highly recommend this. It gives you history and fun facts and points out hidden gems that you wouldn't know were there unless you listen to the audio.
This was our second self guided driving tour and it was great. It’s a lot of fun to listen to the history of the island as you drive through and get the opportunity to stop and experience the landscape. We really enjoyed being able to stay in our own vehicle and stop as we wanted to without being on a bus tour.
Don’t worry about being at exact starting spot. Listen to the intro dentin - 5 of them before your trip. Get familiar with how app works in your car. Might need to have phone open and the video in car. Once you get used to how app works - it is great! Highly recommend
We really enjoyed this golden circle audio tour companion. We already had a tour path determined before hand. It was an excellent enhancement to our day trip around the circle.
This was a super helpful way to navigate the Golden Circle on our own! Once we arrived at the appropriate starting point, the app took over and told us all of the key places to stop along our drive. The stories and anecdotes filled the time and gave us some fun facts to laugh about. Well worth the investment!
The tour met our expectations. It seemed to spend a lot of time with mythology rather than speaking more about our current surroundings, which was frustrating. It did eventually hit on questions we were asking, but not till later in the trip. I suppose since we did the counter-clockwise version, that may be the case. However, 1/2 mythology is warranted and more about what we’re seeing would be nice. I would suggest breaking up the trip and not doing it straight through, it took MUCH longer than we anticipated and would prefer to stay in some inns and do more exploring.
A very pleasant tour. Easy to use and full of great tidbits of history, culture, geography, and mythology.
Brilliant app to get you round the Golden Circle. Saw all of the major sites, learned a lot and was easy to use. Took a little while to get used to it moving from the map to a story but once you stopped panicking it worked really well. Did have a bit of a mare with Spotify interrupting it randomly but once we disconnected it from the car's system it was fine.
We really enjoyed the driving tour and being able to go at our own pace rather than being trapped on a large excursion. The driving instructions were perfects, the Golden Circle had so many interesting stops and the information shared on the tour was interesting and enjoyable for all. I look forward to doing other tours this way in the future.
It never worked. No wifi. Put it on the setting that explains what to do if no WiFi. It was extremely frustrating and a total waste of money.
The idea of this is good, but there were way too many stories (that all sounded the same) rather than commentary of what we were seeing. It would be nice if information was provided about where we currently were. It took a bit to get used to the navigation but that worked after we figured it out.
The app would not work. Called for a refund after trying for 2 hrs, did not post. Have to follow up. Would not recommend wasting the money and your time.
Loved the stories while traveling the Golden Circle. Learned about history, geology and folklore. Narrator was very good. A few snags when the app stopped and it had to be restarted, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Definitely worth it
Easy to use and great for self driving at your own pace. No technical issues. Downloaded and plugged into car play. Screen doesn’t sinc but the sound and instruction is clear and timely. Great tool!!!
Highly recommend this audio tour. Full of information and stories to listen to along the way. Everyone from 8 to 68 enjoyed it!
This self guided tour was perfect! We love guided tours but dislike the large crowded buses. This was perfect! We rented a car and made all the stops, including Fridheimar. Lunch was so yummy! The tales given on the tour were funny as well. I highly recommend getting this tour for an individualized tour experience.
What a great guide! Driving solo thru Iceland, it was like I was on my own private tour. Too bad snow prevented me from finishing the last few miles. Thanks!
The audio tour is nice enough and has a few interesting bits, and we liked the way it started automatically so you could concentrate on driving. That must be really useful if you're travelling alone. BUT the narrator sounded like he was reading it for the first time, with a lot of mispronunciations and some sentences being really hard to understand because of the way he put the emphasis. The info was pitched at a pretty basic level (maybe aimed at children?) and I knew some of the dates were wrong from having glanced at Wikipedia the day before. If the only thing you know about Norse gods is from Marvel movies, this is for you. Otherwise, probably not. There's nothing on it that you wouldn't know from a really basic guidebook or website. The Golden Circle is well enough known for you to be able to plot your own route between the main points. It's definitely not worth the £34 we paid for it. Get a good guidebook for a fraction of the price and listen to some atmospheric Icelandic music by Sigur Ros or Olafur Arnalds instead as you admire the landscape.
tour says 4-6 hours, That's really if you don't stop anywhere if you want to do hikes along the way or jump in a spring really plan for an 8 hour day! great tour! great value!
This was perfect! We were traveling with teens and our elderly parents. All enjoyed and all could easily hear/understand the narrator.
Was great to have a self driving tour and commentary! There was a lot about the history and current culture of Iceland. However, the app wasn't great with directions (apps like GPSy in the US have warnings well in advance and then tones when the turn has come up). We also couldn't turn up the sound enough on our rental car's terrible sound system.
despite the occasional wandering away from the path due to the app not updating in a timely manner, was an excellent tour, definitely will repeat in the future!
Was so amazing! Nice roads in the fall so don't worry about rough driving. And amazing cool stops. Stories were great!!! Having the freedom to stop asking the way was great!
This was the best $24 ever spent on travel. There were over 100 narrated stops all of which were activated by your physical location in regard to GPS. The app was easy to download and easy to use. The narration was extremely informative and interesting. We wished that there were more Iceland tours from this Guide.
The commentary was amazing …we learned so much about Iceland and thus was our second visit. We wanted to take the guide with us on our upcoming drives here in Iceland. We’d really love it for the Western Fjords. Please consider doing more for Iceland. It was tge best $24 that we’ve ever spent traveling. The GPS trigger worked perfectly.
We did it backwards. Maybe you can start it that way. We just had to figured it out ourselves. Thanks
After realising that it would not work until you were on the route covered by the app, it was easy to use and enjoyably informative. Much better way to explore the various sites in your own time by Hire car over a number ofdays to suit yourself. Good dialogue and highly recommended.
The audio tour was an economical way to see the Golden Circle if you have a rental car. The first waterfall listed (Helgufoss) is on a very bumpy road and the gate at the end to access the walking trail is closed. One of the natural spring baths recommended was basically a small pool/hot tub. I have seen other larger more natural ones advertised (e.g. Blue Lagoon). We loved the Strokkur geysir, the crater, and the Gullfoss Falls were fantastic. The recording got out of sync a couple times with the surroundings, but was generally good.
This was definitely worth the cost. You just have to be comfortable driving outside the US because of the different signage. The tour needs a few tweaks, but we overall were glad to have purchased it over just driving to the different sites. We probably also preferred it over a bus tour since it gave us more flexibility (and a much much lower cost). The app worked well and the tour itself worked well with the GPS. There were a couple of driving directions that were missing or miss-timed which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The tour will be best in the summer so that you have tons of daylight. Spring and fall will be better than winter, but will want to start your journey in the morning, but you don't have enough light. We did it in May and had enough light even into the late hours of the night. Dress warm and have waterproof shoes and a jacket available, especially for the waterfalls! We skipped a few of the sites, and the tour still took us 8+ hours!
Really enjoyed the folklore. It’s very silly. Gulfloss is quite impressive. Ponies were so cute with winter coats!
Difficult to download. Expedia takes you to a different website that you need password & code. Use that website instead? When we eventually download it had a lot of fun facts and the story telling w music was entertaining
It was a great tour for background information on the various stops on the tour. We skipped around as we did not visit all of the places on the tour. We plan to catch up on the lore provided when we get home.
This was a great experience in Iceland, and the audio tour did a great job of sparking our interest in the history of the places we visited, and it was one of the key factors that made this trip one to remember for my family and me.
We loved this! Easy to follow and interesting facts kept us engaged. Our teenagers are even okay with it…. It was the last day of our trip so we were tired and this was a perfect chill activity at our pace.
This has a path it wants you to go and as it detects you are at certain points it will pop up with a "audio tour", usually 1-5 minutes long. The tour starts you out in what turns out to be a very congested part of Reykjavik. Drove miles trying to find a spot to park near the start point so I could get this app going. Ended up starting at point 5 because it was too frustrating trying to hit the earlier points. The app uses GPS and knows where you are but will not direct you or correct you. You try to follow a line on the map. Sometimes the pop-up information blocks the map and you may miss a turn. Sometimes it tells you about points-of-interest after you've already passed. Multiple times we found ourselves having missed a turn or gone the wrong direction out of a parking lot. It will start playing the tour in reverse order if you find yourself backtracking but won't redirect you! The information was good but found it to mostly old old Iceland stories. Maybe 5% of the tour dealt with Icelandic history within the last 400 years. It was disappointing because it basically has you as a captive audience for hours (4-6 I think) and it's mostly silent. We're driving through all kinds of interesting areas just waiting for this app to chime in and pretty much nothing. It was OK I guess for the cheap price; we did see the Golden Circle using this.
