Best hot springs we visited out of 3! The natural atmosphere of this one was the best experience! Go early to avoid crowds. As we were leaving your buses were pulling up.

We drove to and booked directly with Hvammsvik hot spring. We had lunch first at the Stormur Bistro which is right off lobby. The food was DELICIOUS! The servers were very distracted and kept engaging with each other instead of taking orders and seeing if guests needed anything. The front desk staff wanted us to order our experience online, even though we were standing right there....the staff seemed all around not really pleasant. The hot spring and the energy of the people there was the complete opposite! We met and heard travelers talking about visiting from Greenland and beyond. The walk up bar at the top pool is brilliant. We took a dip in all of these springs...even the ocean plunge! Talk about rejuvenation-you go from a cold plunge into the majestic rectangle cedar sauna with clear glass view of Whales fjord - off the Atlantic. This was one of THE most unique aquatic experiences I've ever had.
Wonderful experience, lovely hot springs, cold plunge sauna and steam room, with nice products in the shower. Even got to take a plunge in the seawater!
As a local who frequently visit lagoons I highly recommend Hvammsvík. The nature around is stunning and the water is just delightful. It’s a bit more rusty than many lagoons but that honestly is just part of the appeal. I have been there multiple times and it’s always been pleasant.
Versus other springs nearer to Reykjavik, hvammsvik is a good price. There's multiple pools of different temperatures and sizes so lots of choice. Including an ocean plunge pool outside the sauna and you can even go directly into the sea (ps, it's very cold!) We arrived at opening time 10.30 and it didn't feel too busy. By leaving at 1, the pools were much busier but not overcrowded. We bought the comfort package (most expensive) and got swim shoes (useful as it's rocky between some pools) and a towel. You also had separate changing rooms to the basic package but still had to change in a public female locker room. Lockers are very big, you'll fit all you need. Lost a point because I highly believe it should be a phone free experience. There were lots of people taking photos of the pools with you in them which made me feel uncomfortable. No respect for privacy. Then there's also wannabe influencers spending all their time having their boyfriends snap 100s of photos of them in the most scenic spots, making me move a few times so as not to be in shot. Ruined the calming atmosphere for me
Beautiful spot. Facilities well maintained. Could be less people. And my entrance included drinks but they charged money from us.
This is an amazing facility in a magical setting. You’re sitting in a hot spring next to (or in!) the North Atlantic while the cool wind is blowing and sipping your cocktail enjoying the scenery. The kids loved it. Lots of pools. Never felt crowded. We got there at high tide and the ocean spring was overflowing with cold ocean water, however near the end of our time there the tide receded and the ocean spring started to warm up. It was fun to be in! We were there 3-3.5 hours total. Did not eat there. Great time! I would go back to this before returning to Blue Lagoon.
Hvammsvik is about 50 min drive from Reykjavik one way. We booked our tickets online and selected the time spot. You can rent towels for $11 each and water shoes as well. Free parking is available. We enjoyed the scenery and hot springs. Checkin was easy as well- you are given an electronic wristband to lock your locker but can also be used to order drinks at the swim up bar. The only disadvantages are the small locker room and there was only 4 showers in the women's locker room , so you had to wait a bit to shower before and after. We went a day after the solar eclipse so it was pretty packed with tourists and weren't able to wait for a dinner table at the bistro. Otherwise, the hot spring is delightful and enjoyable.
Of all the great experiences we had Iceland I think this was probably my favourite. The journey there ( about 45 minutes from Reykjavik) was scenic and the view from the hot springs was spectacular. We spent some time in all of the hot pools , the sauna and steam room and went in and out of the sea ( we had beach shoes but I think you can borrow them there ) and enjoyed every second. I wish we could go back and spend the whole day there , there really is nowhere like it.
A meal at this bistro is the perfect complement to the wonderful experience at the Hvammsvik geothermal baths. The dishes are truly excellent — special mention goes to the shrimp salad — and the staff are courteous and efficient. In a word: magical!
This was one of the most relaxing experiences of our trip. The hot spring has a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere, with multiple pools at different temperatures, so it was easy to find the perfect spot to unwind. Even though there were other visitors, the layout made it feel peaceful and never overcrowded. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, and soaking in the warm water while taking in the views was unforgettable. One of the highlights was spotting a seal swimming nearby, which made the experience feel even more unique and connected to nature. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and we never felt rushed. Whether you’re looking to relax after a day of exploring or simply enjoy Iceland’s incredible natural beauty, this hot spring is absolutely worth visiting. We would happily return on a future trip.
Such a fun way to start our trip to Iceland! Plenty of hot temperature options in the various hot spring pools and an option to cold plunge too! Great swim up bar offering cocktails, mocktails & hot chocolate to complete the relaxation experience. Locker room was clean and offered hairdryers & lockers. Not crowded in the morning which was a real treat!
Lovely hot pools designed with rocks- several pools warmer and hotter. Steam room area, sauna and bar service in main pool. Gorgeous setting. If you go, try to pick a blue sky day. If not, it's still a lovely mountain side setting- an hour's drive from Reykjavik, I went at 10am the pool was quiet. Try to buy ticket in advance- bring a towel and water shoes of some kind. The beach area is pebbles.
Amazing experience!!! 100 times better than the Blue Lagoon! It’s clean, relaxing and has such cool scenery! Loved it!
Relaxed in the geothermal hot springs around the Hvammsvik Resort. Many pools to choose from at different temperatures. Sauna and Steam Room available also. Loved how it is well maintained and not as crowded or as expensive as Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon. Great way to spend our last day in iceland. I will treasure the memories made together with my family!
This was our 2nd visit because out of all the lagoons and hot springs we had to choose from there was no doubt that it had to be Hvammsvik! It is right in nature,so peaceful and quiet, well organised and at 11am is was not too busy. I took flip flops again and quickly ditched them, i'd recommend beach shoes (the tight ones that cling to your feet) as there are times where you may have to walk on shingle. There is a lovely atmosphere here and its very relaxing. I do wish there was a clock somewhere, (if there is I've never spotted it) but as much as its lovely to not think about time, its hard to relax when you have a tour pick up time to stick to but don't know what the time is! Yet again I forgot to remove my silver jewellery and it changed colour, it changes back after a couple of days but can be a shock if you don't know. The bar system works well while in the water you can (and should) enjoy a cold (or hot) drink. We ensured we left time for some chocolate cake afterwards too, its the best!
This was my favorite lagoon we visited during our 5 day trip. The views alone make this place worth the trip. The natural looking stone pools were incredible. I could stare into the Fjord all day long. For me this was a bucket list experience and I plan to revisit this incredible place.
This is a very neat group of spring pools that vary from hot to warm, with the bottom pool actually filling with ocean water at high tide. The area between pools is gravel, so bring your water shoes! The crowd was not unbearable, there were some people in each pool but enough that you could trade around and not feel like you were in someone's space. Be aware that the 'private' showers are not considered private in Western terms. There are stalls with frosted glass half-doors that swing like saloon doors and don't meet in the middle. So you are not in a big room with others but you are not hidden. That said, no one is really paying attention to others. If you wish you can bring a waterproof bag into the shower stall with you to change clothes. You also get a waterproof bracelet that unlocks a private locker for your belongings. One thing that surprised me is I did not see a display for Hvammsvik products---soaps and things. There is a little cafe which I did not go into. The staff is a bit straighforward, as many Icelanders are, but not unhelpful. Overall we probably spent 2 hours relaxing in the various pools. I was happy to have chosen this spring over Blue Lagoon.
The Hot Springs themselves were absolutely beautiful. However, we actually paid more for the ticket through via tour than if we had purchased them at the front desk upon walking in. We were very disappointed with via tour for this trip as they actually charge more for the tickets than what was posted at the front desk I would not use Viator again because of this.
I’ll start by saying this is a beautiful facility with lovely views and tasty drinks BUT please don’t be fooled by the advertising if you pay more you’ll get “Private shower booths” yes it is a booth but it’s far from private. The booths are all lined up side by side with glass doors and glass walls in between then since you are expected to shower naked, you’re still having to undressed and get dressed in front of others since there is no private changing room. It is possible to wrap up in a towel and change in the restroom, which from what I saw there are only two but honestly I don’t even know if they like you doing that. Sadly due to this misleading fact my family day was a bit of a flop since my teen felt uncomfortable going in the changing room and doing all of this. I do realize I should have called to confirm that my idea of private was the facilities idea of private so that is on me for making the assumption I’m only sharing this here so that hopefully others will be properly informed before spending that extra money on “private”
We loved this hot springs! It did not feel overrun with people or overly touristy. It was clean and had beautiful settings. We would highly recommend it to anyone who is going to Iceland and wants to venture out of the city as quickly as possible.
Very relaxing with beautiful views of the mountains. Also , they had multiple springs with different temperatures. So, we had options.
We went as a family enjoy going from the different pools, sauna and steam room. The drinks and food were first class. I do think that they could include the Towel.
After looking at several of Iceland's famous lagoons and hot springs, we decided to visit Hvammsvík, and we're so glad we did. Not only was it a more affordable option than some of the better-known alternatives, but the setting felt incredibly natural, peaceful and authentic. The drive there alone is worth the trip. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and we spent much of the journey admiring the mountains, coastline and local wildlife. By the time we arrived, we already felt like we'd had an experience before even stepping into the water! We arrived around 5pm and, although it initially looked busy, there was plenty of space for everyone. The pools never felt overcrowded and, as the evening went on, it became noticeably quieter and even more relaxing. The hot springs themselves are beautifully integrated into the landscape, with incredible views in every direction. Sitting in the warm water while looking out over the bay was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. A few tips for future visitors: • Bring shore shoes or some form of foot protection. The natural terrain can be a little rough underfoot in places and you'll be much more comfortable. • Bring a hat. Even on a pleasant day there's often a breeze coming off the water, and you'll be glad of the extra warmth when moving between pools. • If possible, consider an evening visit. We found it became quieter as the evening progressed, making for a wonderfully peaceful experience. If you're looking for a beautiful, less commercial alternative to Iceland's more famous lagoons, Hvammsvík is an excellent choice. Stunning scenery, relaxing pools, abundant wildlife and a great value experience all combine to make this somewhere we'd happily visit again.
Karen and I thoroughly enjoyed Hvammsvík Hot Springs. The coastal setting is beautiful, the facilities are excellent, and the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing. It was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip, and we highly recommend it.
We paid for the premium package and spent approximately $300 additionally for lunch for our party of five before using the spa. The coastal views are excellent. There is a very cool pool that mixes the open water with the hot spring water. Depending on the tide, the temperature varied in the pool. The staff and customer service leave a lot to be desired, however. I did not see one staff member outside of the main check, cashier, food counter area. When I asked to replace a soaking wet towel for my son so that he could dry off after showering, I was told that I would have to pay for the extra dry towel? Are you kidding me? This nickel and diming gives this place a pretty low end feel. How much can it cost to process an extra towel to provide your patron a dry one if they ask? Maybe 50 cents? Maybe? Obviously no one managing or working in this place had any formal training in hospitality. Such a simple thing would have made an experience a positive one versus a negative one
A must stop on your tour of Iceland. Far enough off the beaten path that it’s far less touristy than Blue Lagoon. Many locals visiting when we were there. Great restaurant with soups and simple dishes, coffee, and cocktails. 6 different hot springs, a lake-based warm pool, and the option to take an authentic cold plunge in an 8C/45 degree lake. Awesome steam room and a scenic dry/wet sauna with a panoramic window view. Highly recommend - plan on about 3-4 hours to get the full experience.
This was an incredible experience - Unanimously the best hot springs of the 5 We visited! But bring or rent full water shoes- I scratched my feet up!
Beautiful location with ocean views and snowy mountains. Unfortunately, the weather was quite rough on the day we visited, with strong winds and heavy rain, so we couldn’t fully enjoy it. Would love to come back again on a calmer day.
A very nice "with nature" hot springs! Our ticket included wading shoes which were very necessary to go between the different pools (each a different temp because heated naturally). It did feel a bit crowded a times with some of the smaller/hottest pools not having much room. 2 of the pools get lost to the tide so that doesn't help with crowds either. The swim-up bar pool has true seats but the rest have rocks. We had dinner at the on-site bistro after since we were staying at the on-site resort which was delicious but needs a large menu. I wish the towel rack right inside had numbers to match the lockers so you could remember which towel was yours.
I had booked admission to this hot spring but I wasn’t able to go. The road was dangerous to drive on, due to snow and ice on the road from a winter storm. I tried to drive but it was so unsafe that I had to turn around. I then reached out to them and asked for a credit for admission when the weather and roads improved, because I really wanted to go and was willing to try the drive again in safer conditions. I emailed them multiple times about this and they never responded, even though they had corresponded with me via email earlier that morning. Any response would have been appreciated, I didn’t necessarily need the refund or the credit. You can have the most beautiful location but if you disregard clients, the reputation suffers. Poor customer service is why I give them a low rating.
Hvammsvík is a stunning, secluded spot right by the ocean, and the scenery upon arrival is simply breathtaking. Unlike many other locations, the check-in here was seamless and the locker rooms were pleasantly spacious and uncrowded. The experience at the pools was excellent, with a great selection of different temperatures and enough space to avoid any feeling of a crowd. The atmosphere feels incredibly authentic and peaceful; even though the facility is relatively new, it has a very natural and "original" vibe. I especially enjoyed the unlimited access to the steam room and the exhilarating chance to plunge directly into the cold ocean water. With its calming landscapes and superb atmosphere, this is a place I highly recommend for anyone looking to truly unwind. A must-visit!
Absolutely beautiful - well away from crowds. It was laid back, quiet and just amazing surrounds . Would definitely recommend over other hot springs
I visited Hvammsvik Hot Springs as part of a Lesbifriends Travel group trip to Iceland, and it was one of my favorite experiences of the trip. Half of our group opted for a more traditional spa experience elsewhere, while the rest of us chose Hvammsvik specifically for the natural setting, and it was absolutely the right choice. The pools are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, making it feel peaceful, grounding, and very Icelandic. We only scheduled two hours, but honestly could have stayed much longer. Time really flies here in the best way. The staff were helpful and welcoming, and the drive to Hvammsvik was incredibly scenic, which made the experience feel like an adventure even before arriving. One thing to note is transportation. I do wish there were more options available, especially for visitors without access to a car or for larger groups. Overall, this is a wonderful option for travelers who want something more natural and less spa like, and I would absolutely recommend it.
Fantastic experience with gorgeous view. Tickets gets you a drink, towel and water shoes. Nice changing and shower facility. Different temps in each spring and can do a cold plunge in ocean. Went at 11am.
It's absolutely stunning. Location right on the ocean shore, which simply can not be beaten. If you're after a relaxing and awe-inspiring experience in nature, this is the place for you. Not overcrowded at all, unlike others. There is plenty of space and peace. Wish we could go every day. P.S. Take or rent water shoes there.
This is a newer and relatively small hot spring experience. About 45 minutes to 1 hour drive from Reykjavik. More in nature, out by the whale fjords. The facilities are adequate for a spa of this size but not luxurious. They have different pools at varying temperatures, including a path down to the ocean where you can do a cold plunge. (It was too dark for us to do this part). They have a lovely cafe serving a small but tasty menu, with an outstanding seafood soup that had a delicious Asian inflection. They also have oils, soaps and moisturizers for sale. A limited range but wonderful aroma! Big takeaway: make sure you have your transportation worked out as it can be a long wait for a private cab back to the city unless you’re in a large group.
We booked this in advance direct on the website (with additional Reykjavik Excursions bus transfer option). Transfer 0930 bus arrived slightly late at our chosen Bus Stop 1 in the town centre - then took us up to the BSI bus terminal for 1000 leaving time. About a 1 hour ride to the springs. Check was smooth we had opted for the towel and beach shoes option (shoes were a very good decision). Open changing rooms with a couple of private cubicles and enclosed showers. Springs themselves arranged as about 10 pools of varying temperatures (and steam room) with views of the ocean inlet. Drinks bar near one pool with free first drink. Not particularly crowded and we far preferred it as an experience having been to the Blue Lagoon before. Bus left at 2pm and back at 3pm.
Did the afternoon till closing when dark. Very mysterious and very relaxing. Not very crowded which made it very nice. Plenty of quiet corners to spend with my wife. An hour from Reykjavík due to fog but that was fine Only thing that kept it from 5 stars was the locker room was way too small. No personal space what so ever. Just too crowded even late in the day. My wife said the same thing on the woman’s side. Overall a great evening
This was our first stop after getting off our flight. It was an amazing experience. I think it was well worth the price, but make sure to either bring or rent a towel. Once inside the building to check in, the staff was super helpful. We realized we accidentally booked for the wrong day, but they were super accommodating to our mistake. We ended up staying for about an hour and a half to two hours.
The best place to relax. If you do not bring your own towel you will have to take the most expensive formula but it’s worth it.
Ten different pools of varying temperatures for a blissful, spa-like experience. Clean facilities, friendly staff, picturesque views, and secluded enough to feel like a hidden gem
AMAZING place! Having tried Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon too, Hvammsvík Hot Springs may actually be my favorite place to go to soak in the warm waters in Iceland. It's a very intimate space, doesn't feel crowded or touristy at all and you feel truly immersed in nature. Would for sure go again!
After roughly @ 50 min drive from Reykjavík, we arrived at our scheduled time (recommended to buy tickets in advance), and after a quick check in were provided with a towel and some water shoes we were directed to the changing rooms. You are provided with a bracelet which locks your locker and is used to charge any drinks you order from the poolside bar. We showered sans bathing suits as instructed before donning our bathing suits and entering the first pool. Each pool is a different temperature, and the brave can take a ‘cold plunge’ in the ocean water. There is also a steam sauna. A luxurious and peaceful experience, surrounded by beautiful scenery.
We wanted a more local hot springs experience so drove about an hour outside of Reykjavik to this place, which has a lot of local clientele. The drive itself is beautiful and the place was nice and fun. We arrived around 11 and had lunch first at their cafe ... good food and nice setting. Then we spent a couple of hours soaking in their various small hot pools and enjoying a glass of champagne. It was very relaxing, quite beautiful scenery and after a couple of hours in very warm water your body feels PDG. Don't worry about the weather! Once you get in the hot pools it doesn't matter how cold or overcast or even rainy it is ... we had a "typical" Icelandic day ... overcast, misty, cool ... and could easily move from pool to pool without feeling the least bit cold. We shared the place with many tourists but also locals. Wonderful experience. Highly recommended.
This hot spring is about 45 minutes north of Reykjavik. We paid $240 for the two of us for the comfort package which includes a towel and water shoes. This is our favorite hot spring in all of Iceland, and have been a handful of times. Forest Lagoon is a close runner up. This one has 8 pools of varying temperatures and the cold plunge is in the fjord. There is a sauna as well, and a swim up bar that even has hot cocoa and N/A beer. The locker room is small, but has never felt crowded on any of our visits there. There is a private changing room if you want, and showers that are open as well as private showers. The shoes are nice as going between the various pools can be rough on the feet with the wooden planks and rocks. They have a bistro on site that is very good as well.
Beautiful hot springs about 55 minutes from Reykjavik. Not too busy on a week day at 11:00 am booking. A number of people showed up without reservations and were admitted, it just slows entry down for others if you don’t book in advance. Variety of pools. Can plunge into ocean if desired…we didn’t but many others did. Comfort package included a choice of a variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, water feet, indoor showers, lockers and change room with the option of a private shower and change room (just a few).
Absolutely beautiful peaceful and upmarket thermal outdoor pools right next to a bay and mountains. The pools are beautifully warm with one hot pot, and one pool right on the beach after which you can plunge in the sea. There's also a steam room built right above the hot rushing waters, and a bistro to eat afterwards, the fish soup is the best I've ever had.
Beautiful experience. While it may feel a bit pricey—especially compared to some of the free natural hot springs you can find in Iceland—you do get a lot in return: eight pools, well-maintained facilities with showers and lockers, a steam bath, and even a cozy bistro. It's also much less crowded and commercial than places like the Blue Lagoon, and still more affordable. If you appreciate natural settings and quieter, more authentic experiences, this is definitely worth a visit. Swimming in the sea was a highlight for me—absolutely invigorating!
Hvammsvík Hot Springs was my absolute favorite experience in Iceland — probably even of my life thus far! Just 45 minutes from Reykjavík, the ride there is stunning. Once you arrive, you’re surrounded by pure nature — no buildings, no crowds, just ocean, mountains, and sky. It was genuinely breathtaking and felt like I was in a movie. There are eight natural hot pools you can rotate between, a steam room, and even a cold plunge in the Atlantic Ocean (freezing but amazing and a must-do!). The swim-up bar was a fun touch — champagne in a natural hot spring is surreal. The springs feel completely integrated into the landscape, giving it a wild, untouched beauty that’s different from the Blue Lagoon or other hot springs. Staff were kind and welcoming, and the smaller group size made it feel peaceful. Bring your own towel or be prepared to rent one, as they don’t give them for free. I spent hours here and didn’t want to leave. If you only do one thing in Iceland, let it be this!!
