We had a fabulous time! We had a party of five folks from Minnesota and South Dakota: two 50 year olds, two 80 year olds, and a 7 year old; and all of them enjoyed the Lava Tunnel tour!. The tunnel was a bit drippy and the ground can be wet and uneven, but the path is very safe and stable. While not required, rain gear and good boots are recommended. Our tour guide had a fantastically dry Icelandic sense of humor, that was informative and entertaining at the same time (I loved his bit about how lava tunnels are found.). Shout out to our driver “H” aka “The Buck” who was really funny and tried his best to find us some Northern Lights, but unfortunately we had heavy cloud cover and high winds. Luckily, we can reschedule for another night this week!

Itinerary
On this tour, you’ll explore Iceland’s fourth-longest lava tube and experience the magic of the Northern Lights! Your adventure starts with a convenient pick-up from your chosen location in a comfy minibus, where your expert guide will whisk you away to the Raufarhólshellir lava cave, just 45 minutes from Reykjavík. Once there, you’ll spend an hour discovering the cave’s stunning lava formations and vibrant colors, venturing up to 900 meters (2952 ft) deep into the underground wonder. After that, we’ll head out to explore some of Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes, chasing the Northern Lights. If we spot them, our guides will snap photos, so you’ll have a picture of yourself with the Aurora Borealis. To top it all off, we’ll enjoy hot chocolate under the starry sky!
Our first stop is Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, where we'll join our lava cave expert. After gearing up and getting a quick safety rundown, we'll start our descent into the cave. The walk is smooth and enjoyable, with a mix of well-built paths, footbridges, and some natural terrain to keep things interesting. It’s perfect for all ages, but be ready for a bit of uneven ground! As we go deeper, get ready to be amazed by the vibrant colors decorating the cave walls—emerald greens, fiery reds, bright turquoise, and soft lilacs, all thanks to volcanic forces. Our guide will share fascinating insights into the geological magic that created this stunning underground world.
After our guided lava tunnel adventure, we’ll hop back on the bus and embark on the exciting search for the Northern Lights. We’ll follow the stars, with our destination flexible based on the latest forecasts. Don’t worry—we’ll leave the city lights behind, possibly heading to Þingvellir, Reykjanes, or other hidden gems in South Iceland, where the skies are clearest. With the convenience of a minibus, we can reach off-the-beaten-path spots that larger buses can’t access. And to make sure you take home a lasting memory, your guide will snap a free photo of you with the aurora. It’s a magical moment you’ll treasure forever!
After an adventure-packed evening, you'll be dropped off in Reykjavík at your selected drop-off location.

Our guide Nikos was amazing. It was a very clear night so we saw the Northern lights immediately but we stayed to view for hours. Not only that but he pointed out many of the star constellations such as the Big Dipper . The lava tube was fun and informative as well but the star of the show was seeing the northern lights
This was my 3rd trip to this Lava Tunnel so I do love it there😊But this trip was made so much more special by Nikos. There was a small change of plans so we did Northern Lights one night and did the Lava Tunnel the next morning. I am sorry I was exhausted after a long flight and do not remember the drivers name but he was great and so were the pictures! Nikos made my latest trip to the Lava Tunnel the best I ever had, thank you. And thank you Arctic Adventures, see you next year!
The lava tunnel was very interesting and immersive. We lucked out and got great views of the northern lights.
Bring rain gear for the lava tunnel! Excellent tour by the lava tunnel guide. Definitely a rare experience. Highly recommend. The northern lights pretty much escaped us, but the hunt was still an adventure.
Our tour guide Gummi was amazing. He looked after us so well. He was friendly, knowledgable, shared excellent facts about the Northern Lights.
Our guide Gummi was great and fun to talk to. He properly summoned the northern lights for us. The lava tunnel was also very cool! Bang!Bang! 2 hits
We had a most wonderful night, starting with the lava tunnel tour, led by our knowledgeable and personable guide, Nick. He safely led us through the tunnel, pointing out all the beauty and wonder of its history and the science behind it. Next, our driver/guide for the Northern Lights (unfortunately did not record his name!) searched long and hard to locate the most accessible spot to view them. He was ultimately successful and it was an exhilarating experience to view the Northern Lights! Our group shared hot chocolate under the stars while he explained the night sky, and the process of formation and display of the Northern Lights. These guides provided an exceptional experience that will not be forgotten!
Lava tube tour was very interesting. For the northern lights portion, Pelli was quite diligent in searching for the lights, but we had no idea that we would get back from our tour 1.5 hrs later than expected. The tour description also have us anxiety when we saw it said nothing about hotel drop-off, though that did end up being included.
It was great. The lava tour was nicer than I expected. Although we did not see the full northern lights our tour guide tried for a few hours to chase the lights.
Extremely fun and educational!
We had an amazing experience on the lava tunnel trip with Nick as our very knowledgeable and congenial guide, took plenty of time to answer all of our questions and share the evolution of the tunnel and its beauty. Freeman was our guide on the Northern Lights portion of the tour and he searched until he found the perfect spot to view the beautiful phenomenon! Also well informed and did an excellent job of explaining the natural wonder! Highly recommend this excursion and these excellent guides!
Pick up/drop perfect from Palli a Northen lights expert for a beautiful clear night on the South Coast. The first stop to the lava cave. Our guide was excellent. She is very passionate and knowledgeable which made the tour. Very safe - with helmets and shoe grips. April is a good time to go to see the melting icicles. Second stop to Northern lights viewing was successful but not a big show. Among shooting stars I am pretty sure I saw Artemis II on its way back to earth!! Palli took high tech photos of everyone for the memories. Brilliant trip. Wrap up very very well for the cave and the nighttime -4C admiring the skies!
Pallie was a great driver & Northern Lights expert. He was patient and ensured we got the photos we wanted. Great guide!! The lava tunnel was visually cool. Im not really into the facts much, but some were actually pretty interesting! Do this tour because: 1) You get two in one activities 2) If lights don't show, at least you had the lava tunnel!
Palli was our guide for the night and what a wonderful guide he was! Full of enthusiasm and determination that we were going to have the best possible night. Franzi was our lava tunnel guide and very much like Palli was informative to listen to but went the extra mile to ensure everyone was ok and getting the most from the visit. The tunnel is amazing, surpassed my expectations. It's a fascinating place, I'd recommend it for anyone. Then we were extremely fortunate to see the Aurora in all its beauty, with Palli finding the best spot and helping everyone take their photos and also taking photos of us with his very good camera. The lights were dancing, absolutely stunning and we had so much time to enjoy them. Nothing was rushed or too much trouble and Palli is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the lights and passed that on to us all. I can't thank Palli and Franzi enough for this bucket list trip that has made me so happy. Fantastic value for money, the right amount of time to take photos and enjoy the experience without being rushed. 10/10 from us. Thank you so much ❤️
This was absolutely amazing experience!!! So I have been to many caves tours all over the world and this one was significantly unique with the skylights and snow/ice forms. Our tour guide Francesca was funny and gave so much information. For the northern lights: this was so magical, it was one of those true once of a lifetime experiences and we got so lucky to see “above average” showing of lights even with the naked eye! Our tour guide Pallie was outstanding truly! He was so knowledgeable and was chasing down the lights like his life depended on it and trust it was so rewarding!!! He clearly loves his job and i highly recommend this tour to everyone!!! Thank you for the amazing experience truly will never forget
What an experience! The trip began with a visit to the fascinating lava caves, where our guide (Franzi) led us through, whilst explaining the science behind the wonders around us. She was incredibly knowledgeable throughout, as well as being charismatic. Most importantly, when my family member was struggling with some of it (due to health issues - it is very accessible for most) she was incredibly kind and patient. She created a very relaxed setting, reassuring my family member, whilst also helping. On the minibus, we were blessed with another amazing guide in Palli. He was also very knowledgeable about the Northern Lights and took some brilliant pictures. We were incredibly fortunate to not only see the lights twice, but also to have them dance and cover the sky. On both occasions, Palli seemed to have a super-human sixth-sense as to where they would be, getting us into position moments before they took full hold and giving us plenty of time to see them. Most other operators seemed to always arrive and catch the fading end of the lights, whereas Palli just seemed to have a knack for predicting them (or some secret power to conjure them). All in all, this has been an amazing night and I highly recommend the trip. Both Palli and Franzi were amazing and made the event even better. I highly recommend this visit (and I don't say that lightly as I'm a grumpy Yorkshireman!)
The lava tunnel was very interesting and the guide was great. The Northern Lights were magical. Our guide, Radek, was fantastic and tracked them down despite the snow.
The Lava Tunnel was absolutely amazing! Our guide Francesca shared so much cool information. Our Arctic Adventures driver/guide set our expectations pretty well on the way when he shared that seeing the Northern Lights was extremely unlikely. And after the Tunnel he shared that all other NL tours had been cancelled, so we headed back early. I had booked this trip on our first night, so that I could re-book as often as possible. We're hoping tonight is the night to see the Northern Lights!
Excellent tour, particularly for the reasonable cost. Saw the northern lights even though there was a storm. Group was roughly 12-18 people, staff were friendly and fun.
They were very responsible the northern lights tour was canceled due to visibility but as promised they rebooked us the next day. Had to call them to rebook very easy. Our northern lights guide was amazing. Would definitely recommend them. Great company
Lots of good information on the lava tunnel and chasing the northern lights was amazing The Tour guide ( forgot his name) was good and funny.
The guide (from Austria?) at the Lava tunnel was amazing and engaging. Wonderful person! The cave is interesting to explore. Helmet, lights and spikes provided. Several steps to climb but nothing crazy. Hiking/waterproof boots recommended. Free hot chocolate and lave shaped chocolate are a plus! Afterward, the Arctic adventure guide Palli took excellent photos of the Northern lights! Excellent driver as well. 10/10 Highly recommended. Crossed bucket-list and saw northern lights on first try! Restroom available on site at the Lava Tunnel.
It was raining and snowing the whole day and many tour operators had been cancelling tours as the forecast to see the Nothern lights did not look very promising. We were prepared to be disappointed, however our guide, Freeman, was very determined and optimistic about finding some openings and he didn’t disappoint. He managed to find us some incredible views. May he be blessed.
Highly recommend. It was snowing and raining throughout the day and many tour operators had been cancelling the tours as the forecast wasn’t great for seeing the Northern lights. Freeman was incredibly optimistic and determined to find an opening and managed to take us to see some incredible views. May he be blessed. Lava tunnel tour was also really interesting and a great experience.
We had an amazing time on our tour! Our volcanic cave tour guide was super fun and knowledgeable and she made the whole thing feel educational and exciting! We got a ton of great pictures too. Our tour guide for the northern lights was incredibly thoughtful and kind. He went above and beyond to make everyone comfortable and took all pressure off the evening letting us focus on enjoying the beautiful landscape and we got great pictures together of the lights!
Really enjoyed the Lava Tunnel, was a fantastic experience. Would highly recommend. The issue we have had is with the Northern lights portion of the tour. The photos taken were not uploaded to the link. When querying I have been advised that they are corrupt. However to make up for the lost memories I can have a small discount on future tours. Iceland was a once in a lifetime experience for our family, we cannot afford to return so a small discount on future tours is useless to us. It also took so long to get any sort of response that we have already returned home. We did not take our own photos as we were just happy to look at the lights ourself, knowing the guide was capturing our memories and family shots of the experience. If booking make sure u take your own photos and ask others on the tour to take group pictures for you
This was such a wonderful experience. The lava tunnel was very informative and beautiful. The northern lights were amazing. We were lucky enough to see them. Our tour guide Palli knew exactly where to go and made it a wonderful trip. I would highly recommend this tour.
Palli was amazing it was a great trip, I would definitely recommend it.
I’m so glad I did this tour. It was fascinating. Our tour guide was lovely and very informative. Very very happy. My 15 year old enjoyed it. Thank you.
Small group is the perfect way. The guide on our bus was very knowledgeable about the Northern lights and made sure we had the best opportunity to see them after the lava tunnel. As a solo traveller the guide kept a special look out for me so I didn’t get left behind which was reassuring. The lava tunnel was really interesting. We were given hard hats to wear with lights. Given some safety advice and off we went. What can I say? It’s amazing! So much to see and learn. A great trip and certainly a must if you’re visiting Iceland! And just for info, the flooring may be uneven but I didn’t find it slippy. It’s quite dark, but you’ve got a light on the hard hat. Most importantly though, there are toilets at the start of the lava tunnel and that’s where you return to as well 😉.
Brilliant trip. Highly recommend. Freeman our guide was extremely knowledgeable. The lava caves were very interesting again our guide was awesome. The Northern lights were spectacular. The small group size meant we were able to see and hear everything that was going on.
Great tour guide. Lava tubes were amazing. Unfortunately no northern lights but we get the chance to see them again tonight!
I am going to try really hard not to be biased by the fact we did this tour on a night which was incredibly clear and so we caught the lights repeatedly from 7.30pm until midnight at KP4....but given that's why we went, its hard not to be influenced by it. That being said, the lava tunnel tour was really fun. This tour only includes the first bit of the tunnels, but our female guide was knowledgeable, high energy, and very funny. Lots of interesting geology chat and anecdotes about people getting stuck down there.....AND aurora visible through the holes in the roof!! Northern Lights tour guide, Freeman, also knowledgeable and really friendly. Would recommend.
It is impressive what nature has created. It is a lot of bus drive to get to the Lava tunnel. Not much else to see - both guides were passionate and nice. We did other tours, where different things were combined.
The lava caves are so impressive! And our guide worked hard to find the northern lights for us and take our picture to capture the memory!
Excellent guides for northern lights and lava tunnel. Spot on accurate northern lights forecast amazing experience lava tunnel very interesting with further lights display afterwards
Great guide (Palli) - good driver, knowledgeable, friendly - really seemed to want everyone to have a great experience (and we did!)
Interesting and beautiful lava cave. Good explanations and storytelling, and we got to see some Northern Lights. All around a fun excursion.
My husband and I went on the Lava Tunnel/Northern Lights night tour and it was absolutely amazing. Our main guide, Freeman (spelling isn't right but that's how he pronounced it) was awesome. There were northern lights activity when he first picked everyone up so he prioritized that before the tunnel tour. I have no idea where he took us exactly but it was out of the city and a perfect location to view the lights. He also took lots pictures of everyone. We then went to the lava tunnel led by our guide Francesca. She was awesome as well and the tour was informative and the tunnel itself was so cool to see. Both our guides were really knowledgeable and fun. Both these were once-in-a-lifetime experiences for us and our guides made it so memorable. Highly recommend this tour and Arctic Adventures
The tour was great. Our guide H tracked the weather and raced us to a spot right as the northern lights appeared and filled the sky.
Our tour guide was amazing! He went the extra mile to find the Aurora and when he found it we spent 20 minutes doing nothing but taking amazing pictures!
Palli was absolutely amazing, so passionate about his job which was lovely to see. Francesca in the lava tunnel was also so informative and friendly. The whole experience was great. We saw the lights before entering the tunnel and I thought Palli would say that’s your lot but we still went on search for more lights afterwards xx
What a brilliant way to end our trip, i would recommend this tour to anyone as it was a brilliant combination for an evening tour, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Francesca our lava tunnel guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, it was a great experience to walk through where lava once flowed. Palli our tour guide and northern lights expert was brilliant, also very knowledgeable and once we got out the tunnel the clouds had cleared and the lights already appeared. What an incredible experience, me and my boyfriend had a wonderful time, we cannot thank the guides enough, finished our trip off amazingly! We also loved the hot chocolate! Thank you arctic adventures!
I want to start with a massive thank you to Arctic Adventures for being so incredibly kind and accommodating. My flight was horribly delayed multiple times and there was no way I was going to make it to my designated bus stop, but after realizing I would make it to the main bus terminal BSI I reached out via their website chat and got helped to change my pickup location, and it worked!! So insanely thankful they made the effort to take a little extra time to come get me and my luggage. The trip was well worth it. On the way our host (gosh I forgot her name!) stopped multiple times to make sure we got views of the Northern Lights which were active on our way to the Lava Tunnel. She was so thorough in making sure we got to experience the lights and take plenty of photos. The lava tunnel tour was incredibly interesting, with facts given all the way through and time to stop and take in our surroundings. It wasn't particularly tough terrain if you do any bit of hiking but should be at least in okay shape to go through the tunnel, though the speed was at our own pace and manageable. At the end we did a little stargazing (before we froze outside) and had some hot cocoa before heading back to the city center. Very worth it, would love to do a tour again in the future with Arctic Adventures and hopefully a longer tour at that!
I would definitely recommended this experience. The lava tunnel was really interesting and completely different to anything we had tried before. Doing it at night added to the experience. I can’t speak highly enough of our tour guide who went above and beyond to hunt down the northern lights. He took some fantastic photographs of us which were shared with us digitally the next day. He was fantastic and even dropped everyone back at their hotel after rather than the bus pickup points. Thank you!
Lava tunnel at night was great experience and very knowledgeable guide. Unfortunately no northern lights activity and very disappointed as driver tried multiple locations, expect to offer next day but no mention from tour company,
This combo tour was the perfect Icelandic experience! The Lava Tunnel tour was fascinating. Our guide was knowledgeable and made exploring the underground formations both educational and fun. I learned so much and loved seeing the colors and textures up close. The evening Northern Lights portion with Frímann was absolutely wonderful. He was a fantastic guide - skilled driver, excellent communicator, and true Northern Lights tracker extraordinaire! He kept us updated throughout the night on the aurora forecast, stayed flexible as conditions changed, and was ready with his professional camera the moment the lights appeared. He even took amazing photos for anyone who wanted a keepsake in front of the glowing sky. Pick-up and drop-off from Reykjavík were smooth and easy, and the bus was comfortable. The hot chocolate provided was a much-appreciated treat on an especially chilly evening. As long as you’re patient and go with the flow, this tour is well worth it. A perfect mix of nature, adventure, and Icelandic magic!
Really great experience overall. Our guide "Greta" went all out to maximize seeing the Lights. As an experienced and expert guide, Greta made sure to take advantage of the exact moment that the Lights became available and made sure everyone on the tour got the great pictures and experience desired. The Lava Tunnel was super interesting and really capped off a great overall experience
Greta was my guide and she was awesome! She was very knowledgeable and personable. You get a separate guide at the cave, who was also great
