We had a lovely experience freediving the Silfra! We were lucky and had a private tour with our guide Peter who was super helpful, friendly and funny! The freedive suits are perfectly warm and it’s way better than floating in dry suits! What a magical experience in the crystal clear water.

Highly recommend! Way better than any of the drysuit options and not too cold if that’s a worry. Pictures were insane and our guide was fantastic
Amazing views, not as cold as expected, no need to be in survival mode, just have some fun. So, book a session and enjoy!
We really had an amazing experience in Silfra - freediving in one of the clearest waters on earth with lovely people. We’ve been a group of 4 plus our guide Birgir, so it was really chill and personal. Birgir is an excellent guide with a great sense of humour as well as a fascinating knowledge of freediving and he really made us feel safe and comfortable at all times. I would highly recommend to book the freedive tour in Silfra rather than a snorkeling tour or scuba diving (even if you’ve never been freediving before - you can always decide for yourself how deep you want to dive) since it appeared to be way more touristy and the experience with a wetsuit is at least in my opinion way more unique. It was worth every penny (Birgir also took some nice pictures of us which are also included in the price btw) and I’d love to further pursue freediving :)
This was the last activity we did while on our trip to Iceland and we definitely saved the best for last. This experience was so different from anything we’ve ever done and it was so cool to do. Biggie was amazing, so knowledgeable and funny, he kept our group laughing the entire time. And being able to dive down instead of floating at the top made this experience so much better. This tour is a must do!
Once in a life time experience! Highly recommend and it wasn’t as cold as you would think! The guide was amazing he kept us laughing but also kept us safe and informed, and took great pictures of us and the landscape.
We had an amazing experience on our freediving tour! The team was super nice, very professional, and clearly knew what they were doing. The gear was high quality, communication was excellent, and they were incredibly accommodating the whole time. If you’re nervous or scared, they handle it amazingly and make you feel completely safe and supported. Highly recommend!
What an amazing experience! I could have stayed in for an hours. I was really not cold at all in the wetsuit. I really don’t think someone would need to get the dry suites but that’s your call. If you keep your body moving it will be very fun and comfortable. There is a very gentle current that moves you along so you can’t just stay in one place easily. I didn't know that before. This was my first time free diving. It was fun but I wish I could have been able to swim down a lot more. It was quite a challenge to swim down. My instructor tried to help but it was hard. The dive instructor said after that maybe I should have had the shorter flippers. Just a tip for anyone thinking of doing this. I my opinion I feel it would have been a lot easier to go without any flippers but I am not an expert. I do swim a lot but not in very deep water so do what you want with that info. The instructors were super nice and funny. (The owner reminds me of Wim Hof and the young guy who hates shoes 😁). If you guys are reading this, thanks for an amazing time. If you are debating going or not, Just do it!!! I would 1000000% go again with them. Rent or take a GoPro camera it was definitely worth it. Thanks for an amazing time.
I had seen people snorkelling at the Silfra Fissure on a travel programme so when I booked a trip to Iceland I knew I wanted to do it. Thanks to the friend I went with I was persuaded to use freedive Iceland so we could wear wetsuits instead of drysuits which was absolutely the right decision. It was a wet and grey day but we were ushered in to a heated van to get changed in to diving wetsuits, made very easy with the use of a mix of hair conditioner and water! We walked across to the entry site and joined a queue behind people in drysuits and waited at which point I was slightly concerned. However once we were in the water everybody else had disappeared and there were just the four of us in our group. The two of us had paid for longer fins and weight belts which meant we could dive below the surface and I would recommend this. It was a magical place, the water was crystal clear and diving down you could touch both tectonic plates. We spent about 45minutes in the water and despite the very cold water were comfortably warm in the wetsuits. Hot drinks were provided after we had changed back in the heated van. An amazing experience which I would highly recommend and I would go again if I return to Iceland.
We had two amazing guides. Highly recommend this company. As a scuba diver and water enthusiast nothing compares to this experience. It’s a bucket list trip for sure. Make sure you get a Weight belt and long flippers. If you know how to go deep down it’s it must have them. Also I would not do a dry suit do a wet suit. You are not cold.
Unbelievable experience. Diving with the wetsuit makes all the difference. Sign up for the freedive if you can for an even better time
Had the opportunity to dive only with the instructor bjarni, us being quite young and Silfra being for just the two of us I guess we both had a great time. At least I did. Also I did it on a day when the weather was good so it was all clear and a beautiful vibrant blue arose from the canyon.
Coach Bjarni was very friendly and lovely 😊 He clearly explained the dive spots, gave some tips on how to spend time in the water and showed us great spots to take photos and videos! I really enjoyed the dive and will be back next time to dive with Bjarni! 😁
From the first email to goodbyes after the tour, this was such an amazing company! I went with my sister and we loved our experience! The guide was kind, friendly and informative. He (Bjarni) was extremely helpful with all the gear and getting us through the tour. I also exchanged several emails with the company beforehand and they always got back to be in great time and with helpful info. The tour itself is stunning! The wetsuits, gloves, socks and hood kept me warm through the cold water. Very manageable and beautiful sites! Highly recommend
My sister and I did the freedive at Silfra. It was a great experience. The water was chilly but you wear a 7mm wetsuit which keeps you comfortable. The cold water is only on your face but it is tolerable, you don't feel uncomfortable at all. Silfra is stunning. The water changes from a brownish hue to blue to green and it is clear. And even though there is no sea life, there is much to look at. The guys from Freedive were very helpful in helping us get ready and into properly fitting gear. They were also very entertaining. I highly recommend using them for this experience. My advice to anyone who wants to do this is to figure out how much weight you need to go deeper into the water in a 7mm wetsuit. It will make a big difference being properly weighted and the first meter down takes some effort.
We are freedivers so we specially choose this tour - and we are glad we did. Even if you’ve never freedived, go with Freedive Iceland. The wetsuits were warm and seemed so much more comfortable than the drysuits everyone else had on. Plus, we were able to dive down and look around whenever we wanted. Our guide was calm and professional and sent us a link with pics a few days later. It was so great that we almost booked again for later in our trip. It was a highlight of our week in Iceland.
I found this company while booking my tour through DIVE.IS. Freedive Iceland offers an unforgettable experience in the waters of Silfra, between two tectonic plates. Our guide was incredibly kind and attentive, ensuring that the entire group felt comfortable and safe during the freediving session. The location is simply stunning; the water visibility is amazing, allowing you to explore the cracks in a unique way. I highly recommend freediving with them. Fortunately, we had a sunny day, which allowed us to enjoy both the time in the water and walking alongside the tectonic plates at Thingvellir.
This was an excellent tour with a local guide who is a very experienced free diver, Bjarni. He definitely made the tour. The plus with this tour is that it is a small, local company, which I prefer to support over larger organizations. We were the only 2 on the tour, so got the benefit of a private tour accidentally! The tour itself if fantastic with incredible views and those can speak for themselves. Using wet suits was much preferable to stay warmer than dry suits. Plus way more comfortable.
Prompt response by email, clean suits and well organised facilities all made for a great experience, thank you Bjarni. Being able to move around in the water, freely without scuba equipment or boyant dry suits (usually required for this type of activity) provided a truly magical memory.
The ultimate tour with breathtaking underwater views. Swimming in Silfra was an once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Definitely a highlight of day 2 in Iceland where we visited the main Golden Circle landmarks. Here we could see where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have slowly been separating. Apparently the only place in the world where you can swim directly in a crack between two continents. The pure glacial water is frigid but we got used to it after 5 minutes. As you will see, it was hard for me to squeeze myself into a wetsuit but I’m so glad I jumped! Freedive Iceland is the company we used. They provided all the equipment we needed plus great care, patience and a lot of humor! If you ever do this please do me a favor and drink the water:) Divine!
I had the best time! I was nervous about getting cold without a dry suit, but the wet suit was more than enough to keep me warm. The added freedom of being able to actually dive into the water rather than staying on the surface was amazing. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable. I would go back and do this any day! Thank you for such an amazing memory.
I had originally looked into drysuit snorkeling, and it was with a fair bit of nervousness that I booked a wetsuit freedive. I'm a good swimmer, but this water is significantly colder than any I had been in before. As someone who gets cold very easily, I wanted to be sure that the equipment was going to keep me warm enough. For folks like me wanting gear specifics: The suits are 2-piece Imersion Challenger freediving suits, paired up with 3-fingered Imersion spearfishing mittens and spearfishing socks. All the neoprene is 7mm and open-celled so it adheres tightly to your skin and, while it won't keep you dry, it allows for very little water movement against your body once saturated. It took a solid minute or two before I could feel any water making it through to me at all, and my body warmed it quickly. Between the hooded suits and the mask, only a small amount of skin around your mouth, cheeks, and forehead is exposed. It's a small enough area, and the scenery is so intensely beautiful and distracting that this wasn't a problem at all. After about 30-40 minutes of continuous exposure my fingers and toes were starting to succumb, but this was right at the natural end of the tour anyway. I did a couple of last dives, and climbed out into the comparatively balmy 50F/10C air. The hot cocoa back at the dive van put everything right again. TLDR; If I was warm enough, you definitely will be. An incredible experience that far surpasses being limited to just the surface. I can't wait to do this again!
Highlight of my life! This was absolutely amazing! Wonder of the world. My guide was both cheerful and competent. Never did I feel unsafe or uncomfortable. My pics were amazing! And the hot coco after the end tasted better than any expensive vintage wine. I will return!
The guide really did an excellent job with our group, made everyone feel very comfortable and excited! He was a cool guy who enjoyed what he did and had fun stories and info to share. He took lots of great pictures with his ho pro and made it a very special experience. The equipment was clean and high quality. Plus the hot chocolate at the end was delicious. There are other tour companies, but we had such an amazing time with Freedive Iceland I would gladly book with them again!
After exploring the Thingvellir National Park in the morning, we arrived at the Free Dive van parking area at noon. Our guide/instructor Bjarni, a super friendly, experienced instructor/guide, answered all our questions and helped us with donning our wetsuits. The process was perfect! The suits kept us warm and into the cold fissure we went. It was a beautiful and amazing experience. And we even had extra time to explore some colorful rock fissure areas on our own. A must do experience to round out our Thingvellir National Park visit. Thank you Bjarni and Free Dive.is — Steve & Laura
Silfra is an amazing place. My suit filled with water within a couple of minutes of being in the water, so I wasn't really able to dive like I wanted. I can't remember my tour guide but he was very helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend.
Amazing experience and would highly recommend. I did the freedive tour in March, even as someone that normally gets cold very quickly I was really warm in the wetsuit, and it was so much nicer to be able to dive down unlike the other groups in drysuits, so definitely do this one if you're a competent swimmer. Bjarni was the perfect guide: made sure I was happy in all the kit, detailed overview of the dive, and whilst in the water had the perfect balance of making sure we were all okay without feeling watched all the time. He also took the time with me afterwards to explain the different freediving qualifications I could do, which I'm really grateful for. Overall, the best experience :)
Such amazing experience. If you want to swim In Silfra definently consider Freediving instead of snorkeling. You get so many more opportunities with freediving. This was so beautiful and the guide was so nice. I was worried it would be really cold, but it wasn’t bad at all. 10/10. Would recommend
Marcello was a great and friendly guide, and a pleasure to converse with. Don't worry about being cold, the wetsuits keep you plenty warm. When you factor in all the rental gear, the time spent in the water, and really cool scenery. The cost is really a bargain, and a great way to spend some time on the way to the hot springs afterwards. I would recommend going through this outfit (Freedive Iceland), and I would gladly do this trip again. I can't really think of anything that I would change to improved it.
We had the most amazing experience on this tour. The company did a great job setting up expectations for arrival. Our instructor/guide was very kind, knowledgeable and patient. Absolutely recommend over the comparable snorkel tours.
Fantastic experience! Stayed surprisingly warm in the wetsuits and really appreciated the freedom of the free diving along with the smaller tour group size. Would do again and will be recommending this to any friends (who are comfortable swimmers) who decide to visit Iceland in the future.
We had booked with another company and when we showed up they had over booked. Marcelo at Freedive was able to take us in his group at the same time we had scheduled with no problem. Super grateful for the experience and this company for taking us! Marcelo is clearly an experienced diver who loves what he does and was an awesome guide. It was an amazing experience.
Went freediving with Marcelo and had a blast. First, I am known for being cold in the warmest temperatures, but their freedive wetsuits fit perfectly and I didn't feel cold at all! Except my lips ofcourse but as soon as I started diving I completely forgot about them. Marcelo was great with both new and experienced freedivers, explaining technique and keeping an eye whenever I went down deeper. Silfra is also deep enough for some great dives. And the water is stunning. Freediving is definitely the best way to experience it, because you get amazing views from the top and bottom. At the end the warm coats, heated van, and hot chocolate were perfect for changing and warming up :) Thanks Marcelo and Birgir!!
We had a great time free diving the springs with Marcello, the tour guide operator. He was very patient with us while getting ready and was always lending a helping hand. He had a great attitude. The springs were beautiful with amazing water clarity. Current pushes you along faster than we thought but not in an unsafe way, just if you want to look at something deep, better go ahead and go down to look and not wait.
What a fantastic experience. We chose this for our last day of a 9 day Iceland tour and went for the early morning 930 am dive when we new the parks were quieter and the light would be great. We were a family of 5 and our youngest is 12. When we looked to book this in our holiday itinerary, we were in two minds about our options because the vast majority of options are dry-suit set-ups and our 12 year old wouldn't fit. So we went with freedive.is for this because it used wetsuits hoping this wouldn't be a miserably cold experience. It was QUITE THE OPPOSITE. First, the wetsuits are c.7mm and so just as warm if not warmer than bulky dry suits. Second, the flexibility in a wetsuit means you are free to move around and spend as much time diving down as we all did to get some of the freedive experience. Dry suits are going to keep you glued to the surface. and thirdly, a sense of exclusivity I suppose as everyone else there is going mainstream. So go freedive and go wetsuits. The fissure snorkel/ freedive is a true experience; like all things a lot in the expectation and not knowing what to expect in 2-3 celsius water! The water is absolutely crystal clear and such a range of emerald to sapphire colours. It's tasty too as glacial water filtered for years on its journey from the glacier to the spring that feeds this fissure. There is a gentle current that takes you through and we were in the water for about 30-35 mins which is comfortable and exhilirating. We had a great guide, Marcello, taking us as a family group which all felt very personal throughout. He was really knowledgeable about the diving (of course), the geology, and a range of other topics including how and when the aurora borealis works. So a big thanks to him for the kit-up, the clean changing set-up, care and attention to all 5 of us and some nice hot choc to finish. Top guy. We will be receiving a range of pics and gopro footage he shot during our dive within 3-4 days on a google drive which is great to have to remember the experience and the diving. Highly recommended.
This wrote was a highlight of my partner and I’s honeymoon! Despite being nervous about the cold water, we went with the wetsuits. We are so glad we did because while the water is cold, you get used to it very quickly. The views are so incredible that you will actually forget you are cold! Marcelo was our guide and was very knowledgeable about the fissure and made squeezing into a wet suit easy and fun. He takes his photos with a GoPro and the photos turned out amazing. There are apparently two options between free diving and snorkeling which we were unaware of. We ended up with snorkeling but wish we would have done free diving as you can stay down longer due to weights and longer fins. We will definitely book again with Freedive Iceland when we return!
Amazing experience, diving in the freezing crystal waters of Silfra. We are a family of four, with tweenager boys and everybody enjoyed it so much! The wetsuit was comfortable and kepts us surprisingly warm, the only thing we had to deal with was the freezing water on our face which was exposed, but you get used to it in a while. Both instructors were friendly, explanative and supportive throughout the whole tour. We were dressed/undressed in a warm van, and in the end we were offeres hot cocoa and chocolate. If you are in Silfra it's an experience you can't miss.
The crystal-clear glacial waters, combined with the mesmerizing beauty of the Silfra fissure, made for an unforgettable experience. I was with my 13 years old son, and our guide helped us to set up all the equipment to feel really comfortable in the water. Most of the visitors doing snorkeling, but freediving is much more interesting.
The guide was great and very helpful. They have quality wet suits which will enable you to see silfra up close with flexibility. They will take photos of you on your venture so you can just take in the sight. Highly recommended.
Really cool experience that can be highly recommended. Thanks to Marcelo who showed us the best spots for photography and helped with his camera.
Thanks a lot to Freedive Iceland for this amazing experience. We really enjoyed our Silfra dive and had a great time!
Entertaining guide who gave us a warm welcome. He shared a lot of information during our conversation. The water is as clear as claimed and the views are spectacular. Really cool experience. Would highly recommend it.
I am a freediver myself and (of course) could not resist this tour. Marcelo is a great guy and the equipment is more than adequate, so it was not too bad that I was not able to bring my own. Silfra is a great experience and I would recommed this tour over the ones with the drysuit any day. With the provided suits, only the face and feet will freeza bit, but I bet they will do so with the drysuits, too. With the freediving tour you have the option to dive a bit down into the rift, which you cannot do with the drysuits of the other tours. The other guest of the tour was a complete novice when it comes to freediving, but with the help and advice form Marcelo he was able to do a few dives in the end.
The guides (clearly expert level divers) were charismatic, helpful, organized, and encouraged a playful exploration of the waters which I really appreciated. This was an incredible experience I'm very grateful for!! Tim McLeod
We had a wonderful experience with Marcelo. We changed in the van and it was not a problem. The wet suits and all the accessories fit very well and kept me very warm. Only my face and toes were cold. It was 1.5 hours for every one to suit up and stood in line for the entrance . Snorkeling in the clear water was about 45min . Awesome experience. We also received the best hot chocolate at the end . Everyone else had dry suit but it looked really bulky and uncomfortable .
Marcello gave us a freedive Silfra snorkel tour and it was absolutely stunning. He was a fantastic tour guide with a ton of knowledge and expertise. Can not recommend him or this company enough if you are thinking of doing this tour. The wet suits provided were extremely warm and the pricing was much better than the competitors
once in a lifetime experience. guides were awesome and the Silfra does not disappoint. I'm always looking for the one thing that is unique and different when we're on vacation and Iceland has so many things in that category, but snorkeling in the silfra was amazing.
Stunning and surprised how warm we stayed during the tour. Thanks to our friendly and informative guide who made it comfortable and memorable for us.
Hands down the best activity we did our entire 8 day trip. The guide is super friendly and was helpful. Views were spectacular! Would have never expected the water to be so clear. I would definitely recommend doing it! ALSO, I grew up in the states and have worn many wetsuits (grew up near the pacific..aka cold water to Americans) and these suits were SO WARM. They kept me warmer than my everyday clothes. So if the temperature of the water is something that you’re worried about DONT BE. You will be warm, only experiencing cold lips! We will be back and will do it again!
I have to admit that I really had to force myself to do this, and I nearly chickened out on multiple occasions. We both live in Thailand, have only ever dived in tropical water, and I have an almost phobic level of dislike for cold water. I can't even take a cold shower in a tropical country without hyperventilating - seriously, I thought this would kill me. I only went through with it because I'd talked to friends so much about what I was about to do (or maybe not do), that there seemed no way to back down. All I can say is that it was AMAZING, and I mean - NO COLD WATER SHOCK WHATSOEVER. The rubber lined spearfishing wetsuits are no ordinary wetsuit - they are incredible - you feel NO DISCOMFORT AT ALL when getting into the water. After 40 mins I felt no different than diving in the tropics. So, if you are hesitant about doing this because you just can't imagine diving into freezing water, then do NOT let that stop you - it is no problem whatsoever when you go with Freedive Iceland - and it is just gonna be so much better than messing round in one of many the drysuit bootcamp operations. Now, just a couple of caveats - yes, your lips and forehead will feel the water - but that's no different to wearing a drysuit. Pull the hood down properly and it's no problem, but be prepared to accept a bit of an ice cream headache for a short while. The rest of your body will feel totally comfortable. And embrace the tight fit - don't wear any baggy swimsuit underneath - just speedos or swim undergarments - you really need the suit to hug your body tight. Make sure the gloves and boots fit well - if water circulates, you will feel it, and whilst it won't ruin your day, you'd rather not. Also, we were very lucky with the weather - almost no wind, bright sunshine, which made the whole getting changed thing much more comfortable than it might otherwise be, and also made the whole experience much less intimidating. I'm not sure how I would have felt if it was dark, windy and rainy outside. You will have to get changed in / outside a van in the car park - but that's the way it is for everyone, an our guide Marcelo was a great help getting the suit on (much easier than a dry suit, but it does involve squirting a lot of hair conditioner). The snorkeling / freediving itself is everything it's cracked up to be and more - this is the clearest water on earth , and it looks so much better from down below looking up and ahead than it does from the top looking down. So get the weights on and dive down, even if it's only a metre or two. Again, we were super lucky with the light - we went at 930am in April on a clear day. Maybe check with the team in advance when the best time of day to go would be around the time your are visiting. Shout out to Marcelo, who was an awesome, friendly and helpful guide and to the Freedive Iceland operation which - for us at least - ran like clockwork. We were the only two people in the group that day so we had the whole tour to ourselves, with no extra charge. This is the way to do Silfra. Enjoy!
