The tour was canceled by the tour operator less than 24 hours before the event. Didn’t leave me much time to book anything else while we were in Port that day. The tour guide said he requested a refund for me. I have not seen it yet.

Itinerary
rom Þorlákshöfn (Thorlak’s Harbour) you will ride west, towards the beautiful lava fields of Krýsuvík. Krýsuvík is also famous for its geothermal activity (not surprisingly in amongst all the lava), so you’ll see some white strokes of steam rising from the ground in the distance. You might also see some impressive views of both mountains and the sea. You will also visit a small church, Strandakirkja, that’s well known in Iceland. This is a protestant church from the 12th century, with beautiful views towards the ocean, and you’ll be sure to see some impressive waves crashing on the cliffs nearby, especially on windy days. Close by is a small café where you, and the horses, can have a little rest and have some snacks. Then it’s time to return to base. This tour is four hours long and only intended for experienced riders as it is of medium difficulty. Enjoy a ride through beautiful Icelandic nature. Check availability by choosing a date. We had a great experience with younger kids. This was one of the very few places I could find that would allow our almost 4yo to actually ride with the family, and I’m glad they were open. I wasn’t sure we would be able to fit it in so I hadn’t booked ahead, but Magnus let us book the same day and personalize the experience to a one hour ride at a time of our choice in the evening since no one else was booked. They let us pet the ponies in the stable for a bit while they got set up. My husband and I rode holding our younger two kids and our older son was on his own pony. Magnus and his friend walked and led our two ponies the entire time down into a nearby old quarry area so that the horses were very controlled while we had the kids, stopped and took photos for us, and checked frequently that we were all comfortable with the ride. Then invited us up for coffee and cookies and some chatting at the end! My kids loved the experience.
Had an awesome trip with a fantastic guide. The horses were really nice and the atmasphere was kind and genuine. The kids loved it. Recommend 100%!
Æðisleg reynsla og frábær reiðtúr. Magnús tók vel á móti okkur og eftir túrinn fengum við gott kaffi og kleinur. Stoppuðum í gott spjall og ætlum að koma aftur. Awesome experience and great riding. Magnús welcomed us warmly and after the ride we had good coffee and donuts. We stopped for a good chat and we plan to come back
I had an incredible experience renting a horse from Alhestar - horse rental. The staff was friendly, professional, and made sure I was matched with the perfect horse for my skill level. The horses were well cared for, healthy, and well-trained, making the ride smooth and enjoyable. The trails were breathtaking, with beautiful scenery and well-planned routes for both beginners and experienced riders. I also appreciated how much the staff genuinely cared for their horses, which made the experience even better. Whether you're a first-time rider or an experienced equestrian, I highly recommend this place. I’ll definitely be coming back!
I am extremely disappointed with our experience at this horseback riding place. We made our reservation several weeks in advance and received a booking confirmation, so we were excited for the day. However, when we arrived at the location, there was no one there. We called multiple times, but the line kept hanging up on us. We thought we might be at the wrong spot due to the confusing directions on their website, so we waited around for 20 minutes past our reservation time. Finally, we received a call from someone telling us that no one could do the tour and they did not contact us earlier because they didn’t speak English. This was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. We were really looking forward to this experience, and to be left hanging without any communication or heads-up was completely unacceptable. Definitely would not recommend this place.
Booked the 2 hour family trip. The guide was nice and the horses were friendly and in very good condition. The ride went on in the local area. We were a mix of experienced and unexperienced riders. Although we paid for a two hour ride it was shorten down to just one hour and additional 20 minutes to prepare the horses. The guide explained this was due to safety reasons because of unexperienced riders. There was no information about this at their home page. We got only half of what we paid for, I feel a bit scammed. I recommend this place only for experienced riders.
Long (45 min) but scenic ride to the farm where the horses were saddled and ready to go. We rode for about an hour through lava fields on a cold windy day but didn’t see much else except for a salmon processing plant and some construction. Magnus, the owner, was very nice but doesn’t speak English, so communication was difficult. And, after arriving at the farm, we were told there would be an additional, $75 charge for transportation to and from our cruise ship in Reykjavik. This was totally unanticipated and not described on the Viator website. Thankfully, we had our credit cards and were able to get the money at a local cash machine; otherwise getting back to the ship may have been problematic! Not cool.
Amazing experience! My sister and I enjoyed the ride to the black sand beach and along the water too! Our guide, Bjorn, was friendly and helpful. We loved the Icelandic horses. Highly recommend this experience for an authentic, wonderful Icelandic excursion.
Authentic Icelandic horseback riding experience! Born was very nice and helpful! Going across the black sand beach galloping was amazing!
Wow! What an experience!! Definitely the highlight of my three year olds trip! Highly recommend! Sweet horses and kind staff!
Genuine and welcoming! Friendly and personal guides. A unic experience and a must when coming to Iceland.
Magnus an amazing man, does not speak English but we managed to understand each other. Nice horse riding, very friendly person, not busy for him today so we did extra hour with the horses. We also spent 2h alone with 10 horses in their field which was amazing. It's not touristic at all so don't be in a rush, enjoy as a local not as a tourist. Great time and fun we had!
Lovely little 1hr ride through the moss fields today. Horses were comfortable, well cared for. Better than others we'd rejected... Located in an edge of town area by a mine but it was fine. Very helpful and amenable host. English not very strong but we understood. Plenty of opportunity for our children to ride unguided and quickly supported if they were nervous. Health and safety levels traditionally Icelandic but efficient. My 10yr old son now LOVES horseriding whereas he'd been afraid in the UK.
Great 1 hour ride! Magnus was great and our 8 year old had a wonderful time! She even got to feed the horses after the ride. Super friendly owner!
A wonderful experience! Such sweet Icelandic horses! Magnus was a charming guide. Rode through beautiful fields of grasses and moss-covered rocks, ending up on a beach. Highly recommended.
Wow!!! What an amazing day in the Iceland countryside!!! The owner is such a happy, fun man. We didn’t speak the same language but it didn’t matter. We loved him. He and his team of a great young man and his children made us feel right at home. They even invited us up for coffee and cookies and drove us back to our hotel in a neighboring town. My dad is turning 80 this year and this was the first time that he has ridden in 30-years. Today really meant a lot to all of us. THANK YOU!!
I booked this tour because I really wanted to ride on Iceland and this tour sounded pretty good. So I planned my trip especially to stay in þorlakshöfn for a few days. I arrived there the day before my horseback riding tour and because my ticket didn’t show a time, I went to the meeting point the afternoon before. When I found an Icelander at a stable and approached him, I was told that this stable hadn’t been around for a few months and there would definitely be no riding tour here. I was also shown the stable of Alhestar riding tours and the stable also sat out a bit depraved. In addition, there were no more horses on the premises of the stable. I then tried to get in touch with Viator. After I finally made it, I was only told on a PAID PHONE call to customer service that the Enterprise still existed and I should contact them. Fortunately, a refund was also initiated. The current state is that I have NOT been on a RIDING TOUR and I HAVE NOT YET RETURNED my MONEY. I hope I still get my money back!!
We did the "family tour" with our 4 and a half year old daughter, riding in the front of my saddle. Nice one-hour tour in the meadows along the coast during a clearing between two rains. No time to be bored with dynamic and pleasant horses. Magnus, even though he speaks English as much as we speak Icelandic, was great especially with our little one. Very attentive to us. A great meeting with both him and his horses.
Fun and family tour with coffee and small meals afterwards. There were only four of us, which was great. Magnus is the kid's favorite!
Hello, we had come to the farm with our 8 year old daughter for a 2 hour riding tour and were very nice and warmly received. The horses were great and we were accompanied by 2 guides. It was a great ride and afterwards my daughter was allowed to walk around the stable and I was invited for coffee. Finally, we were allowed to help with a subsequent group . This farm is great and highly recommended. We will definitely come back. Here you will be warmly welcomed u d feels comfortable.
