Itinerary
Your journey starts with a scenic drive across the Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark known for its intense geothermal activity, lava fields, and volcanic craters. This surreal landscape, often compared to the surface of Mars, offers a striking introduction to Iceland’s raw natural power. This portion of the tour is included for guests who select pickup from Reykjavík. If you're joining the self-drive option, you'll meet directly at the Fagradalsfjall trailhead.
Pass through the evacuated eruption zone near Grindavík, where recent volcanic activity has reshaped the landscape and disrupted daily life. This powerful section of the tour offers a firsthand glimpse into the real-time impact of Iceland’s ongoing eruptions, highlighting both the force of nature and the resilience of local communities.
Explore Fagradalsfjall, Iceland’s most active and talked-about volcano, where continuous eruptions from 2021 to 2025 have transformed the landscape into a dramatic display of fresh lava flows, steaming ground, and new craters. This 5-mile (8 km) round-trip hike includes about 984 feet (300 m) of elevation gain and offers a rare chance to walk across terrain formed just days or months ago. Located just an hour from Reykjavík, it’s one of the few places in the world where you can safely witness the raw aftermath of recent volcanic activity up close.
Take a short walk through the vibrant and steamy Seltún Geothermal Area, where boiling mud pools, fumaroles, and colorful mineral deposits showcase Iceland’s powerful geothermal forces. The bubbling landscape offers a striking contrast to the rugged lava fields nearby and makes for a memorable photo stop. This visit is included for guests who choose Reykjavík pickup. Self-drive participants will join the group directly at the Fagradalsfjall trailhead. (Weather permitted)
Pause at Kleifarvatn, one of Iceland’s deepest and most mysterious lakes, nestled among volcanic hills and black sand shores. This scenic viewpoint offers a perfect opportunity for quick photos and a moment to take in the dramatic beauty of the Reykjanes Peninsula. This stop is included for guests who select Reykjavík pickup. Self-driving participants will meet the group directly at the Fagradalsfjall volcano trailhead. (Weather permitted)

My husband and I booked a private guided hike with Haffi in early November 2026, at Fagradalsfjall, near Grindavik. We met Haffi at a local hotel and he gave us a history of the local eruptions and earthquakes in recent years. He showed spots around town to illustrate the extent of the damage and then we drove to the volcano. We hiked about five miles, with Haffi showing us all sorts of amazing features, including the magma “river bed,” various fissures and cracks, the lava tubes, a magma’s arch, and more. We had steamed Icelandic hot dogs as a snack. Took amazing photos. It was so so amazing!!! Very highly recommend a guided hike with Haffi!!!!
Hike was good, guide was great. However parts were skipped/missed, did not visit Kleifarvatn but drove past it, weather was fine to do. Also pictured on GYG was the chance to stand within the steam/smoke, this was not done. Weather aside, people base what they do on the pictures and description. Overall absolutely not worth the cost paid, £150 for a drive and a hike.
Absolutely great—we got even more than we had imagined. Learned about the history of some cool spots, ate hot dogs cooked over a volcano, and our guide was excellent. Thanks for everything, Oddi!
This was a lovely experience with a very cool and knowledgeable guide Haffi. We took a little tour through Grindavik first, as this town was multiple times heavily affected by volcanic activity. Then we hiked up the volcanic mountains and looked at all the different amazing features of the landscape and the lava rock. There will also be a small surprise towards the end, before you descend again. ;) Very awesome and highly recommended!
Hafpor was an excellent guide with a lived experience of the eruption and subsequent lava flow. Generous with his time and engaging. Great pace and amazing stories about the eruptions. Highly recommend!
What a wonderful experience! Our guide was so knowledgeable and informative. A wonderful experience!
Oddi was a fantastic tour guide. Had great knowledge of the area and volcanoes. Loved the trip and walking on the magma field.
Wonderful tour with Oddbjörn, our best experience of our Iceland trip, would definitely recommend!
A great day with Sigrun on the volcano.
Great guise Guide Oddi. He was very nice kind and excellent person. I really really recommend you
Brilliant trip! Guide Oddi was amazing, knowledgeable, interesting, we felt in very safe hands and he went out of his way to make our experience the best ! Thanks so much Oddi , this was the best trip of our holiday !
Our guide, Oddi, was very knowledgeable, genuine, and enthusiastic about volcanic features/events and Icelandic culture - he helped make the tour very enjoyable. The lava rock environment we talked on/around was very cool.
Amazing experience ! Thank you so much to Sigrun :)
Oddi was amazing, funny with good stories we learnt so much, he kept the small group of us together, made the home seem easy and kept us all safe throughout, would recommend highly
Oddi was an excellent guide. You can see he love his country, culture and is proud to share all about during the tour. I have learned a lot about lava and volcano, also about trolls, elfs and others histories and islandic cultures. The tour was amazing, great views and extra hot dog made on hot lava. If you want a good experience and genuine islandic tour, book it!
Wonder full oddi very welcoming and kept us safe
This was an awesome tour! Walking over the lava, seeing the steam, and learning about how volcanic eruptions have impacted Icelanders’ lives and their resilience and solidarity made for an unforgettable experience. Our guide Oddi’s passion for Iceland really shone through. We loved everything he shared about Icelandic people and culture, from fascinating eruption videos to stories about trolls and elves. And to top it all off, he cooks the island’s tastiest hot dogs!
We went on the most amazing hike on to a lava field today! Sigrun was extremely knowledgeable and even made us hotdogs using the heat from the steam underground. Truly a once and a lifetime experience!
Our guide was amazing! Would highly recommend working with him.
This was an awesome tour! Our guide Sigrùn was friendly and knowledgeable. Having been in Grindavík during the eruptions she had a special insight into how the evacuation was and how the town’s recovery is going. The pace of the hike was very manageable, with many rest breaks to give us information, and a special highlight was cooking lunch on a fissure in the lava field. We loved this tour and highly recommend it!
A truly wonderful hike! Our tour guide was amazing. She was very knowledgeable and funny. She made sure everyone had a wonderful time and suprised us by cooking hot dogs on the lava field in a crack! Could not have had a better experience.
We had an incredible experience today on our volcano hike with Sigrún, who is an exceptionally knowledgeable and personable guide. The tour began with a visit to the "ghost" town of Grindavík. We looked at stark examples of the destruction caused by the lava flows, and Sigrún shared compelling stories about what life was like for the locals during the eruptions. From there, we drove to the base of the volcano and hiked up to walk right on the lava field. The entire tour lasted about 4.5 hours total, with 3.5 hours dedicated to hiking. It was a great pace for beginners and not too physically demanding. Our guide's experience showed at every step (pun intended). Along the way, she pointed out various examples of the 600+ kinds of moss Iceland is known for, provided crucial safety tips, and shared her firsthand knowledge of the events that transpired. The weather was cold and windy, which was to be expected, but the lack of rain was a fantastic bonus. Another brilliant highlight was getting a cooking lesson using the natural geothermal heat! Overall, this was a great tour made even better by an outstanding guide. I highly recommend booking with Sigrún. Just be sure to bring the right gear for a proper hike. Mike and Jo.
This tour was incredible! The scenery and views are amazing! Are tour guide Gudni was very knowledgeable about the area and all things volcanic. He was great to talk to.
This was by far the best tour of our trip! Haffi was a friendly, fun, knowledgeable guide who helped us to have an unforgettable experience. The hike was incredible, and the small group size was perfect. If you're on the fence about this tour, I highly recommend it! It's worth every penny.
Great guide, very informative and helpful
A must do when visiting Iceland. We had Oddi as our guide and from the get go he was giving us information about Iceland. He's knowledgeable and truly passionate about what he does which made the day all the more special. It was a bit tough for us to get up The volcano but Oddi was encouraging, supportive and never made us feel like we were holding the group up. The lava field hot dogs were a nice touch as well!
This was an amazing experience, full of stunning scenery, geological and historical information, and fun surprises. Our guide Oddie was phenomenal and brought everything to life. This was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Iceland.
Our guide Oddi was AMAZING! He gave us a great combination of history and culture along the hike. The views were awesome and walking on the lava field was such a unique experience. Highly recommended!
Oddi was a fantastic tour guide on the volcano hike - very friendly, engaging, knowledgable and professional. We saw so many unique things including different lava formations and bubbling pools. The hike itself involved a moderate climb but we had many stops so it was very accessible even for non hikers like us. We enjoyed hearing about the mythology of the land and the history of the volcanoes. Thank you.
Great experience! Oddi was knowledgeable and entertaining!
We had a wonderful volcano tour with Oddi. We really enjoyed it!

Fabulous visit, guide very friendly and informative
An amazing experience walking on the lava and the terrific explanation of the phenomenon and local scenery
I have done many walking tours all over the world and this, by far, was one of the best. Our local guide, Haffi, was absolutely awesome! The tour started in the town of Grindavík itself with very informative explanations mixed with personal experience by our guide. Then we drove to the trailhead where we started our absolutely amazing hike up to the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption. Haffi's personal stories mixed with the explanations and descriptions of the local history, geology and current events was a wonderful way to learn about the challenges, bravery, technical prowess and resiliency of Grindavík residents. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour. Be aware that the hike is strenuous and you need to be in shape. But the stories and views are totally amazing, and, as I said above, this has been one of the best walking tours I have ever done!
Great excursion! Great scenery, walking on lava was really cool. Tour guide Oddi was very friendly and informative - cooked hot dogs over the hot air between the lava rocks. Also, Carlos (office administrator) was very helpful in helping us work around my screwup on the pickup point.
Haffi was our guide. He was amazing, incredibly knowledgeable of the recent events and gave us a fantastic hike. Truly wonderful!!
Amazing tour, Absolutely brilliant, Oddi our tour guide was absolutely excellent, would definitely recommend going on this tour.
Wonderful hike and guided tour of the volcano and surrounding area. The guide even heated us up Icelandic hotdogs from the geothermal heat. It was windy, but that’s normal for Iceland. Expect it!
Excellent tour, loved walking on the lava, the hotdog was delicious, Oddi the tour guide was amazing, very friendly and told us a lot of history, amazing experience, would definitely recommend going on this tour.
Hafþór Skúlason was the host of the group and he was WONDERFUL! So informative, knowledgeable, welcoming and kind to all of us. You can tell he really enjoys what he does and he's a local so he had a lot of cool and interesting stories to tell. He also sent me more information regarding the northern lights, when and where to see them etc. I really appreciated the hot dog lunch at the top of the volcano too. Would HIGHLY recommend this tour and to try to get Hafþór Skúlason as your tour guide!
Excelente experience with our guide Oddi !
This was the perfect volcano hike. Oddi was a wonderful guide, knowledgeable and experienced, The hike itself was amazing, from the walk up the slopes to the lava fields. Oddi set the pace at a level that accommodated the different skill levels, and kept us entertained the whole way with information and stories about eruptions. His easy, friendly manner contributed to a very compatible group, another benefit of his leadership. An epic Iceland experience!
This was an outstanding experience! We learned so much and the views were incredible. Thorey our guide was amazing! She is so knowledgeable and friendly. The hike can be steep at times, but even someone not in the best of shape can do it. We very highly recommend!!
Thórey was great and knowledgeable would highly recommend. The incline was steep on the way up but we took frequent breaks checking out the scenery that made it worth it.
Thorny was amazing great hike
We had an amazing time, Haffi was a superb guide and his enthusiasm for the area was so contagious you couldn't help but be in awe of the area and the people who live here. I would recommend anyone who gets the chance to give this a go! The hike was a good pace and we never felt the need to rush and catch up. Being on the lava field with the ground steaming below you and sitting on a hot rock while enjoying a mid hike hot dog was just the icing on the cake!
We had an absolutely amazing experience on the volcano tour! Everything was perfectly organized, and the whole experience was unforgettable. A special mention to our tour guide, who was absolutely wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and made the entire tour even more enjoyable. She shared so many interesting facts and made sure everyone felt comfortable and had a great time. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. Highly recommended! 🇮🇸🌋❤️
