We were disappointed as the driver only took us to one location and we sat there for a few hours. There was a small line in the sky for a few minutes and that counted as seeing the northern lights and we could not reschedule.
The knowledgeable guide took us to an excellent location ~30 mins from the city. From here we saw an outstanding Northern Lights display. The photographs of the experience were top notch. Although very cold the driver provided hot chocolate, spiced with rum, which more then compensated for the temperature. Overall it near perfect excursion and well worth the money.
We had a really good experience. Pick up was fast and the bus was comfortable even though it was packed. Our driver said we were having 3-4 grade lights that day. He was very knowledgeable and loved taking our pictures. We can’t wait to see the final pics!
Our family went on a 4 by 4 Northern Lights tour with photographer and it was tremendous and! Our guide Sultan is very passionate about providing his clients with the upmost experience! He was determined to show us the Northern Lights and he succeeded - it was breathtaking! And the photos that Sultan took came out great - they captured the beauty of the lights as well as the fun that we all had! I could not recommend more!
Exciting and beautiful!! The initially shy aurora showed itself in all its glory. An extraordinary spectacle of the beautiful northern lights! We had to be patient and arm ourselves with warm clothes, but the crew provided hot cocoa and something sweet for a snack. Great stories and a beautiful spectacle. I recommend it!
We were unfortunate to not see the lights on the first night which is out of the control of tour operator, but we booked this tour as it offered an included second opportunity should this happen. However, the company were uncontactable by phone, email or their online chat the following day. They did respond a few days later to offer a repeat tour as promised, but we had already left the country by this time.
Very expensive and bad tour, they take you in a incredible super jeep to see the nother lights, they only drove for 45 minutes to a place where you can stll see the city lights and did not want to drove to another dark place so it was impossible to see nothing. The nxXt day I took another cheaper tour and they drove like 1.45 hours to a very dark place were was possible to see the Nother lights.
One should take your customer yo def lights to Multi places he just took us to 2 spits n back the your said 4 hrs he got us bk in 3 Nimish Sanghavi
I found this company to go above and beyond with providing a great experience to its customers. The weather caused cancellations all week long but the company were sympathetic and kept rebooking the tours. Finally on my last night in Iceland the weather cooperated. John was the guide for my van and he was gracious, informative, had a great sense of humor and did his best to engage all guests(which was a hard task with some of the passengers). Our van met up with 2 others at a likely spot and we waited. One of the other guides is the resident Northern Lights expert(Christian) and he went above and beyond helping me get the best photos possible and was exceptionally kind about it. It was a magical experience and one I’ll never forget. This tour was my second with Gravel Travel and both exceeded my expectations.
The tour was great, our guide Daniel was so fun, made the experience even better, he had the best disposition for the trip, took so much photos of everyone who wanted, put very nice music for the ride. Also we were very lucky and were able to see lot of northern lights. Definitely would recommend.
We had a fantastic experience on our northern lights tour. We were picked up on time and drove 20-30 minutes to a location that had clear skies away from the city. On the journey our guide explained to us a bit about the northern lights. We started to see the northern lights shortly after arriving and we were lucky to see an amazing display. We also got a great photograph taken by the guide. By this time two other jeeps had joined and the guide shared more information on the northern lights. We enjoyed the hot chocolate (with rum!) that was provided before heading back to our hotel. This was a highlight of our time in Iceland thanks to gravel travel.
6 tourists in our group. Guide stopped off at service station first so we can use toilets. Took us to off-road remote location. Explained that northern lights are not visible to naked eye. Phones and cameras show more and how to change settings. He will take pictures and send to us. Sky was clear. we could see so many stars. He pointed and told us - Orion , 7 sisters, north star, Jupiter. We had multiple layers of warm clothing but it was very cold (-12) plus strong cold winds. He gave us hot chocolate and allowed us to sit in jeep while we waited for another jeep to pull us out of snow. We stopped off at service station for food. Had great fun with the other tourists. At hotel drop-off, our guide reminded us - we did not see lights so email booking contact to get us booked for next night at no extra charge. Done this. Eventually booking confirmed (maybe they should say we would be collected between 09.00 to 09.50 instead of 09.00). This time in bigger jeep with about 15 people. Different guide from same company. He was looking for aurora forecast and took us to different location. Again we saw same as previous night. He reminded us to email and rebook but we were flying back next morning. I read other reviews and no-one wrote like this. Had they provided these facts, I may have had different expectations. And buy usb heated clothing and special boots. The bus company (Gravel) and tour company (Guide to Iceland) were excellent.
I booked this tour for the 28th. It was cancelled. Then I emailed to reschedule. I made a mistake and because I didnt get a confirmation I texted on the 29th to confirm at 4:45pm. I got a text verifying yes we are on. Then I texted again at 9:10 to say just making sure you are still coming, got a yes we are running late. Then I called at 9:50 and the guy said they weren't coming and I wasn't on the schedule. Are you kidding?? Even though I was very sad, I still wanted to see the northern lights so I tried to reschedule..They were full on the 30th and now I am now leaving town on the 31. So I had 3 nights to see the northern lights and they did not take me on any of the nights. Needless to say I was very disappointed. Its okay to be sorry, but I will never get that chance again.
We took the tour 3 days ago. But weren’t able to see the northern lights. They offer a second try to those who couldn’t see it. But when we try to book it they simply do not respond. I tried to use the link they provide, doesn’t work. Then I tried emailing them. No response. Tried calling, no ine answers. I will go back home tomorrow and won’t be able to go for my second chance. I paid a lot to only sit in the car for 4h and not seeing any northern lights, have not taken any professional photos, anything. Just not worth it.
The small group tour is well worth it. Freezing cold but the guide was great and kept us topped up with got chocolate and rum.
The tour company needs to communicate better. We reserved through a third party and only learned of the tour company because they canceled. There was no confirmation of the rescheduled trip. The tour picked up at the last possible minute but still had other pickup stops. We mostly just sat in the large bus with giant wheels. The guide stood outside and might have been looking for the lights, but he never explained to us what he was doing. He did offer to take everyone again but it was our last night. Overall it was just very strange.
Even if the effort for finding the lights was there, I think we expect something more espectacular. You have to imagine the "green" light, that you will see through your camera. The driver didn't give enough information and the chocolate service was not nice. The cost was really high (51 thousand coronas), for such a poor experience. For me and my wife was a waste of money
We had done Northern lights tour earlier in our 5 day iceland trip, but has no luck with the lights. Our guide today was very passionate about northern lights and studies cloud movement all day. He setup his telescope and camera on a spot and was very sure we would be seeing something. While we wer waiting for the lights to appear, he showed us Jupiter , Saturn and a whole lot of stars and constellations through the telescope. This was an ethereal experience in itself. After an hour, we started witnessing the lights, first very dim and aa rhe night progressed they kept getting stronger and stronger. I would highly highly recommended this tour to have a full experience of witnessing an icelandic sky with this guide.
Our guide did his best but there was too h cloud cover to see the lights. Unfortunately we were flying home the next day and refunds were not offered.
We went driving for 3/4 hours and didn't see anything. Driver Oscar was very nice & helpful. We had hot chocolate with rum. We didn't get any photos taken either.
It was a long and cold night but we were able to see the northern lights. Our guide was very knowledgeable and a great photographer. Helped us to get pictures and he took great pictures
Such an amazing experience! Highly recommend. The driver brought us to the best spot and the sky was full with northern lights 🥰 10/10
Incredible night! Tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, excellent hot chocolate and rum, beautiful lights and photos. Knew exactly where to look for the lights and “super jeep” took us off road where buses can’t go! Everything we were looking for on our trip to Iceland! Highly, highly recommend!!
Great evening guys knew what to look for and where to go so prove fruitful. Shame they forgot the rum
We went to different locations to look for the lights, the jeep was comfy and was a small group. The guide was really knowledgeable and a great hot chocolate. The guide took photos for us, would definitely recommend a fantastic trip
Really great trip- Fantastic guide who was knowledgeable and really entertaining! We got to see spectator lights too!
Bare minimum. I never saw any colors, just some gray clouds. Although we do have photographs that show the green lights behind us. I believe this is quite common for your average northern lights tour. Wally, the operator, said to me, “this will do.” This was advertised as a small group, but in fact another large minibus, driven by Wally’s son, the photographer, with more people joined us at our spot. I believe this is a standard spot they take folks to see the lights. It was close to Keflavik airport, we could see a spinning light over the hills to the left, and the lights of Reykjavík on the horizon to our right. Wally picked us up at our hotel last, but no consideration was given to my mother, almost 80 yrs old, who was forced to sit in the very back of the truck, with insufficient seating (right next to the wheel well, so seats were more narrow. She didn’t complain, but I was quite disappointed that Wally had little concern other than to get us to the spot. No one is guaranteed to see the northern lights on a tour, for good reason. It’s a natural phenomenon. They were very nice people. We got some photos to share with people. But not the best tour. I won’t try them again.
Our guide Christian was awesome! He found a great spot to view the lights and helped us get our phones and cameras set-up to take pictures. I would highly recommend this tour company.
I chose this tour specifically for the photos, as most tours do not provide photos. It was a small group of about 16 & we were taken to a lake about 20 mins from Reykjavik, away from the big bus tours. We could only see the lights faintly & almost had to give up but as we drove back, the lights came out around 1am so we stopped & got fantastic photos! The bigger bus tours don't normally wait around as long as this. It was cold waiting on the bus though. I think they should maybe leave the engine on or something as it was -7 degrees.
An amazing night! We were so lucky to see the lights - Valthor & Kristian were brilliant guides and the hot chocolate (&rum!) was a lovely touch. Would really recommend this experience and would definitely book again if we return to Iceland in the future!
Very expensive, my girlfriend really wanted to see the lights so we did it. Not knowing that we would literally be sat In a freezing cold van with no heating on. I get there’s chance of not seeing the lights but to not be given heat, or things happening was awful for the price paid. When a hot chocolate was offered after 2 hours there was around 3 sips per person. Laughable. Wasnt happy. Wouldn’t recommend the waste of money if I’m honest.
We were picked up in a type of monster truck with about 16 passengers and driven around 20 mins from Reykjavik to a quiet lake area. After waiting until almost 1am, the lights barely showed, despite positive forecasts. We started to drive back to Reykjavik and the lights appeared all over the sky. The guide stopped and we all got out and had photos taken etc. The next day, we received a link to access and download all the photos!
What a great time! It was the icing on the cake to our father and son trip. Our guide and photographer Kristjan was top notch. A real professional that was extremely knowledgeable, personable and enthusiastic about the hunt for the lights. His photography skills were excellent and he found the lights! I would recommend to anyone.
This was a spectacular tour. Our first night was very cloudy but this specific tour was very accommodating. They allowed us to retry another night and it was so worth it. The tour guides were very knowledgeable about the science behind the lights and stars. To top it off the hot chocolate and photos were amazing. Highly recommend this tour! And P.S dress warm!!
Kristain was great! He took us to a place near town, but we hit the jackpot on the very first night and the very first stop! Others in our group were returning try, and said that they tried for almost six hours the night before. I was impressed with our guide to have that dedication and still be so excited to find them the next night. It is truly worth the money and energy to witness this miracle of nature. Our group was small, about 12 people.
The company was responsive and helpful via email before I booked. Pick up/drop off was efficient. It's nice to have only 8 people in the super jeep. There was one other jeep at our location, about 15 minutes away from the city. We love the pictures they took for us with their professional camera. The location was so good even my basic phone camera was able to capture some decent shots!
The Tourguide was very nice and he explained everything. We also had hot chocolate. And we also saw the northern lights!
Amazing tour. They took us to the best secluded spot to see the lights and it was a real small group. They brought delicious coco and donuts. Lovely guide too
Amazing tour from start to finish. Highlight of our trip! Our guide was so informative from the minute we stepped into this brand new superjeep. Nice small group. Only 8 people max. He drove us to a remote area where the large buses cannot drive. The Northern lights showed within minutes of us getting there. We saw an amazing display of the Aurora. Highly recommend Gravel tours!!!
Christian was awesome, helped everyone with camera/phone camera tips. He took pictures of all of us with the lights. We stopped at 3 places, we are so lucky we got to experience this!
We were able to go and see the northern lights outside of Reykjavik. It was an amazing experience, we took great photos and we are very grateful!
The small group tour was tour to se see the Northern Lights was totally worth the extra cost. Our guide, Daniel was friendly, informative and a lot of fun. He was able to find a nice, remote spot for us to view the Northern Lights. He also took photos of us with the Northern Lights in the background. He treated my 82 year old mother very well and offered her help getting in and out of the vehicle. Daniel when above and beyond and the tour exceeded our expectations.
Overall great tour. Daniel picked us up right by our hotel is a semi-monster truck that our 11 old year old loved. A strategic drive north to a perfect viewing spot yielded and an experience of a lifetime. With great photos taken by Daniel as the cherry on top.
While we were able to see the northern lights, we were a bit disappointed in the adventure. We were under the impression that we would be literally in areas away from common bus tours searching for the northern lights but that was not true as one of the larger tourist buses tried to get in parking area we were in (with many other cars). Bit pricey for what we actually experienced.
We had a perfect evening hunting for the northern lights. Valthor was knowledgeable and skilled and he made sure we were in just the perfect spot to see the most mind blowing display. The lights by far exceeded my expectations thanks to great planning from valthor. This was the sixth night we tried to see the Lights - the others on one of the big buses. Thr keep experience is worth every penny. Don’t hestitate; just book.
Rafnor was a great host. We got together the northern lights in a display that made us feel very privileged. Radnor and Wale (forgive my spelling) were very knowledgeable and found the perfect spot for a beautiful aurora boreal display.
This was an excellent company. They worked really hard to find the lights and we got lucky and had an amazing display. If you can afford to go with a smaller group that has a photographer it is a much better option than a large bus with many people. Photographing the lights is very difficult and going with a photographer ensures you will get a great photo of yourself in the lights.
It was disappointing to not see the lights but it was through no fault of trying, our guide drive for miles chasing the stars that were few and far between in the cloud filled sky and we are forever grateful for his experience and for the comfort of the amazing jeep
A very enjoyable trip with a very entertaining and informative guide. We were away a long time - we stayed out much longer than expected - we didn't get back to our hotel until 1:40am. The Aurora weren't spectacular but nonetheless well well worth the trip.
