Air Milford went above and beyond! This trip exceeded my expectations. We weren't sure if we'd be able to do the original plan due to the weather, but they came up with the alternative plan in a timely manner. As the day unfolded, they were able to conduct the first half with the original plan, and the second half with the alternative. It was a great mix of both. Anthony the pilot was such a professional. The cruise was also very enjoyable with many notable stops. Overall, we left the trip extremely happy. Thank you for the unforgettable memory!

Itinerary
Each tour begins with a complimentary pick-up from your centrally located Queenstown accommodation. After check-in completion, your pilot will give a thorough pre-flight briefing on the route and scenic highlights likely to be encountered, before embarking on your Scenic Flight to Milford Sound. The flight time to Milford Sound is 35 minuets.
After takeoff, view Coronet Peak, one of New Zealand's premiere ski fields.
Fly over the Shotover river and Skippers canyon, this is where gold was discovered in the 1860's. This river became the world's 2nd highest gold bearing river in the world, next to the Klondike in Alaska.
Fly over the small settlement of Glenorchy, located at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Here you enjoy wonderful views of two braided river mouths joining the lake. The two rivers are the Dart and the Rees, both glacial fed, display wonderful colors as they mix with the lake.
Fly over the dense beech forest of the Routeburn and Hollyford. valleys. One of new Zealand 'great walks' traverses the Routeburn valley, its a 3-day hike through the valley and over an alpine pass into Fiordland National Park.
Fly over the main divide of the Southern Alps and into Fiordland National park. One of the first sights you will encounter on arrival in Fiordland National Park is Mt Tutoko, at over 8,900ft / 2,700meters it is Fiordland's highest peak. There are two main glaciers to view here, the Donne and the Age.
Fly the full length of the fiord, right out to the Tasman sea where you will turn and descend, before coming into land. This part of the flight really makes you appreciate the sheer size of the towering cliffs of the fiord, which rise over a mile high in some parts!
View the highest peak in Milford Sound, Mitre Peak. It impressively rises directly out of the water of the fiord, to it's summit at 5,560ft / 1,690 meters, which is just over a mile of vertical gain!
Fly from Queenstown to magnificent Milford Sound
After landing in Milford Sound, your pilot will escort you to the boat docks to board your Milford Sound Nature Cruise.
During your cruise, view the Bowen Falls, it is one of Milford Sound's two permanent waterfalls and at 530ft / 162 meter is it's highest. After rainfall, there are hundreds of waterfalls to be viewed in the fiord!
When your cruise returns, your pilot will meet you and escort you back to the airport. If time allows, the pilot will take you on a short bush walk through the native beech forest. The flight time back to Queenstown is 35 minuets.
After taking off in Milford Sound the flight path first takes in another view of the fiord, before tracing south, down the Arthur valley. At the head of this valley, the Sutherland Falls can be viewed, this is New Zealand's highest waterfall, falling impressively 1,900ft / 580 meters to the valley floor below.
On your cruise, numbers are capped at 150 passengers and on this intimate experience, nature guides offer a personal commentary. The boat explores nooks and crannies along the edge of the fiord, nudging into sheer rock faces to examine flora and fauna in detail. The boat traverses the full length of the fiord, right out to the Tasman Sea, allowing guests to relax and take in the stunning scenery. when the boat returns your pilot will meet you for your return flight.
After once again crossing the main divide of the Southern Alps, taking in stunning views of small alpine lakes and jagged snow capped mountains, the route then traverses the densely forested Greenstone and Caples valleys.
After emerging from the Greenstone valley, fly over Lake Wakatipu. Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand's longest lake at 46 miles / 75 kms, it is also incredibly deep, up to 1,250ft / 380 meters at some points! Queenstown is nestled on the lake's shores, so some great views of the town are enjoyed before landing.
View the Walter Peak high country station, which is one of New Zealand's largest merino sheep farms.
View the Remarkable mountain range and Queenstown, before landing back at the Air Milford base for your drop-off back to your accommodation.
The flight path then begins to track east over the Southern Alps and back towards Queenstown. New Zealand's second largest lake, lake Te Anau can be viewed stretching out to the south.

A truly exceptional experience from start to finish. The flight was amazing, the private cruise was fantastic. I just cannot recommend this experience enough
The flight to/from is better than the milford sound cruise itself (and the cruise was excellent). Air Milford run a tight ship. Shuttle to the air field to/from hotel. Flight to/from milford sound. Bus to/from the ship. All of it smooth and without a hitch - simply incredible. I got to sit copilot for the flight over, and it was one the coolest things I've ever experienced. Our pilot was clearly well experienced. The views were immaculate. Between you and me, they could charge double and it would still be worth it.
We had the greatest trip being a family of 8 some were nervous flyers! But our amazing pilot Corey really went above and beyond making sure we all had the best most well informed flight over the alps! He was so helpful and courteous we really enjoyed both flights and the Milford sound cruise!
Perfect experience with a tight knit family run business. Pilots are very experienced and the planes very modern. True luxury trip.
The flight to Milford Sound is just as spectacular as the cruise. And the Air Milford team, a family run business, go above and beyond to make sure your trip is memorable. Loved every moment and highly recommend.
This was an amazing adventure. The whole experience from booking to the actual trip was so professional and friendly. Worth the spend.
Wonderful scenery, great plane, lovely cruise. Paul and Corey were great pilots and hosts. A fabulous day
The friendliness of staff, organisation, quality of plane and wonderful scenery made for a magical day.
This was an incredible experience – the scenery was truly breathtaking and you really get to appreciate the vastness of this amazing landscape, and the dramatic change in scenery as you head into the sound. For those short on time, it really is the perfect option, avoiding an hours-long drive. We didn’t get to do the cruise due to weather constraints but did not feel short-changed because the flight was so spectacular. Tom our pilot was very professional and friendly, and provided excellent commentary. This was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand!
We absolutely LOVED our trip with Air Milford to Milford Sound! What an experience! We felt so safe with our experienced and super lovely pilot Cory. Highly recommend this trip! We even saw Dolphins right alongside the boat!! A truly unforgettable trip.
wow!! What an unforgettable experience, making lifetime memories. Tom our pilot made us feel very safe and comfortable as we flew high above the Mountain ranges between Queenstown and Milford Sound, with a spectacular bird's eye view of Mt Earnslaw and others. Landing into the sound was spectacular, Milford Sound is surrounded by some of the steepest, most vertical mountains in the world, true fjord country. Don't mis this, it's truly a once in a lifetime jaw dropping experience.
Was very hesitant to fly in small plane. We had cloud cover and our flight was delayed until it cleared. The staff were very organised, friendly and professional. Our pilot was Emma. From the moment she got us airborne I was totally at ease. Enjoyed the flight both ways - just amazing. Smooth landing. Got to do nature walk to the kiosk to board boat. Boat ride was really good. This is a must do! The beauty and landscape from the air is mind blowing.
We could not have been happier with this trip. From the outset the communication from Air Milford was brilliant. Clear instructions on contact in the lead up made life easier and gave us realistic expectations. Steven/Stephen in the office on the “day before” call was extremely helpful and kind. On the day of travel the staff that drove us as well as reception staff were really lovely to deal with. Then we met Thom our pilot. He really is a truly kind gentleman who not only treats his customers with the utmost respect but his knowledge of the area, his guidance and commentary throughout were excellent. The cruise itself being a smaller group makes it such a better experience. Little things like reserved tables a warm muffin and the commentary from the skipper were excellent. The staff on return to Queenstown continued the great service, took time to chat and did not rush to get rid of us. Safety throughout was to the highest standard.
I cannot recommend this tour more highly. I have been twice now and have loved it both times. I have travelled with different people each time and they have been blown away. The scenery is amazing and the tour is one of the best things you can do when visiting Queenstown. The plane was comfortable and our pilot (Tom) was excellent with his flying skills, commentary and general all round friendliness.
Professional, knowledge and commentary first class, and a safe caring environment was provided… great value and comfort… and a beautiful day!
We did the Milford Sound fly–cruise–fly tour yesterday and honestly loved it. We were originally booked for the 9:30am trip so called Air Milford at 8am for a weather check - but due to rain, it was a no go. As instructed, we called again at 10 (weather still dodgy) and then again at 11 when we where told the weather had lifted and the trip was on! The flight down was amazing, super scenic and a bit of a thrill. Such an iconic South Island experience. Our pilot (I think her name was Emma—sorry if that’s wrong!) was deeply impressive. She made everyone feel comfortable and shared some great info along the way. We were bussed from the airport to the waiting boat that had all other passengers already boarded and tucking into their lunch. The cruise was beautiful. Only small thing was we were under the impression we were on a smaller boat than the one we ended up on. But all good - the crew were lovely and the commentary from the Captain was facinating. Milford Sound is just stunning. We’ve been to the fjords in Norway and this definitely holds its own. The flight back was somehow even better, taking a different route so it felt like a whole new experience again. Would 100% recommend—such a memorable day.
We were in Queenstown for our honeymoon and one of the things we most looked forward to was our flight to Milford Sound and cruise. We were worried about the weather, as there was a lot of cloud cover on the day of our flight. Air Milford was amazing at working with everyone who was booked for this tour and trying to find a way to get us to Milford Sound. While we did not get to partake in our cruise due to the small window for a safe flight return, the pilots did their best to get us as much time on the ground to walk the shoreline and visit the gift shop at Milford Sound. We still got to see the impressive cliffs, waterfalls, and some wildlife- personally we saw a Milford Sound Weka, which I was later told is incredibly rare. The flight itself is unreal. The views you get of the mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, etc. while heading out to and back from the sound are incredible. It is hard to choose between taking photos to remember it all and just taking it in. Our pilots were great about pointing out major landmarks and geographical points along the way. While a sunny day you would have been able to see a lot further at any given time, there is something about the mountain tops coming up through the clouds that was really special. Make sure to pack bug spray! The sandflies at Milford Sound are relentless and will eat you alive if you don't have something.
Loved this experience! Air Milford provided excellent service, and our pilot, Tom, was extremely informative. He pointed out what we were seeing from the air all along the way. Boat trip along Milford Sound was beautiful. Highly recommend!
We we're nervous going into this experience, but it turned out to be our FAVORITE thing we did on our trip to New Zealand! You CANNOT miss this - it is one of the most breathtaking things we have ever done! The Pilot was amazing and extremely experienced. He made us feel at ease, and knew his way around the mountains and fjords with his eye closed. He took us a different way there and back so we got to see different scenery, and flew us to see the top of the Glacier and the largest waterfall in New Zealand. The take off and landing felt easy, and the cruise was awesome as well. We had to reschedule this experience 3 times because of weather - so definitely leave wiggle room in your travels plans so you can get the opportunity to go ! We originally had it schedule for Monday morning, and ended up going Thursday afternoon. It was well worth it though, because the rain let us see tons of waterfalls and rainbows on the cruise.
This was great. Pricey but really an unparalleled experience. Good thing the pilots are very good. You come close to all kinds of jagged peaks.
A truly memorable experience. Definitely worth the price if you are hesitant. Milford Sound is an awe inspiring place and to take only 45mins in the sky to get there from Queenstown meant being fresh on arrival. Air Milford staff ensured the adventure in the sky over snow-capped mountain peaks and sailing across the water seamless, spectacular, very safe and comfortable.
Great family run professional business. From pick up to take off and landing we thoroughly enjoyed the experience . Highly recommend this tour. Antony was our pilot and lucky enough to meet Hank the owner. As I said professionally orchestrated business, felt safe, informed and guided throughout. Well done done Milford AIR
They went out of their way to provide us with a very special experience. After a late start due to low cloud, once we got in the air the conditions were near perfect, the pilot went to 9000 ft and around Mt Tutoko before heading to the coast and Milford sound - the scenery was breathtaking. The cruise was also special, then another scenic trip home. A fantastic day and worth the $
Best day ever. Fantastic experience. Unbelievable views, so lucky to have good weather. Air Milford were very professional and friendly, great flight, excellent commentary smooth landing. The cruise on the sound was equally as good. Highly recommend
What a phenomenal day! Everything was absolutely perfect, from the email comms before we arrived from the UK, to the pick up, the check in process and to our superb pilot Cory. We were blessed with perfect weather and a wonderful Captain in Charlotte for the cruise. Definitely the highlight of our trip. As the psalm said on the plaque in the cockpit "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands."
Wonderful experience. The team was knowledgeable and courteous. The trip is well worth your time and money.
It was an exceptional experience, the pilot and boat team were engaging and informative. Both made a real effort to ensure we could see as much as possible. Well worth the money.
Treat yourself and take the flight! Alternatively, the drive from Queenstown is 4-5 hours - the flight is unbelievable! We had a clear day and pictures of the mountains didn’t do it justice- the cruise was also amazing with multiple waterfalls in full action A definite highlight of our entire NZ trip
The team at Air Milford was great through the whole process - from booking, to transportation to their location and the flight/cruise itself to the transportation back to my starting point. Super helpful team and everyone was so positive and cheerful. The weather was beautiful so can't beat that. The flight was fairly smooth and the views of New Zealand from above were breathtaking! Totally recommend. The cruise was just the small group of us - about 24, so plenty of room to walk around and see the sights! What a treat it was to see a group of dolphins swim up to us and play around the boat. The kiddos on the boat loved it! The flight home was just as smooth and enjoyed the different views we got to see on the way back! Very relaxing way to get to the Milford Sound instead of by car on a windy road!
It was a great trip with fantastic views
What a great flight and boat ride. This was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand! Highly recommend!
The highlight of our stay in NZ! Milford Sound is a must but Air Milford contributed significantly. Very knowledgeable pilots, friendly staff answering the questions. What I value also was a small boat and no crowd
It was such a lovely experience. When we checked in, we were told that bad weather was heading toward Milford sound and the boat tour gonna be canceled. We were given the option to cancel and get a full refund. I went ahead with the flight and I do notregret it. It was absolutely beautiful. Make sure you bring bug spray once you land at the Milford sound. Our pilot, Emma, was great. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.
Had a great day touring Milford Sound with Air Milford. We were collected by taxi from our hotel at 10:15 in the morning. Everything was done with care and efficiency. The views during our flight to and from Milford Sound were spectacular. Our pilot personally took us to the docks for our cruise. Once settled on board the small cruise ship, we were given a boxed picnic lunch of sandwiches and snacks. Commentary given throughout the tour. I hadn't been through a fjord before and it was very impressive. We were flown back to Queenstown via a different route, so more sites to see! Safely back at our hotel by 4:30. Really memorable!
Amazing experience. Amazing and knowledgable pilot Antony Sproull. Highly recommend Air Milford. Even arranged the weather😁
The staff and crew of Air Milford were friendly, helpful and skilled. We hit a beautiful day of weather for the flight and cruise and the folks of Air Milford made it an excellent experience!
This day trip was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. From the time we booked to the end of the day, everything was perfect. Highly recommend Milford Air and our pilot Emma really made the day great for us. This adventure is well worth it and if I could rate it 6/5 stars I would! TY everyone at Milford Air!
Trip of a lifetime! Exceptional service by Air Milford! They kept our family comfortable and safe! We had an amazing scenic trip to Milford Sound, followed by a cruise, on a beautiful day. Thank you Air Milford!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Air Milford. We are incredibly grateful for their patience, understanding, and constant communication when our flights had to be rescheduled. The team stayed in touch and went out of their way to fit us into the tour, which we truly appreciated. The flight itself was very comfortable, with stunning views along the way, and the cruise to Milford Sound was simply beautiful. Everything was well organised, smooth, and enjoyable from start to finish. We are extremely happy with the experience and would highly recommend Air Milford to anyone looking for a special and well-cared-for journey.
Excellent fly cruise fly with wonderful views. Expert and safe passage throughout from our pilot and the boat crew. Would highly recommend this trip.
This was such a great trip! I booked a couple of months in advance as I had limited time and asked them lots of questions as I am such a nervous flyer, their pre- service was excellent. Ok the day itself I was picked up and taken to the airfield, check in and the briefing was well explained and off we went. It’s 40 mins each way with the cruise at the Milford Sound around 1.5 hours. We were so lucky with the very changeable weather and had blue sky most of the trip so it was money very well spent and a gave me such a memorable experience of Milford Sound that has always been a bucket list item. Our pilot Emma was also fantastic and had lots of knowledge of the area which she shared during both trips, could not fault her at all. Professional from start to finish and well worth the money paid - thank you!
Fantastic flight and cruise experience. Awesome customer service - we were cancelled from another provider the day before due to bad weather grounding flights and managed to get a 1:30pm flight the next day. From the phone inquiry to the in person sign up to the preparations for flight departure and the actual flight and cruise the service and experience was 100%. Absolutely recommend this company and experience. Brilliant female pilot - Emma who was not only expert in flying but really personable and extremely knowledgeable in sharing information during the flight to and from and walking the group from the airfield to the boat departure. Boat cruise was also fabulous. Relaxed and comfortable. Again great commentary from the skipper and brilliant staff customer service.
What an amazing and memorable experience! It was well organized, on time and the pilot was very knowledgeable . I would highly recommend this company!
Beautiful staff: gracious and accommodating. Stunning flight path with experienced pilots with a co-pilot chair for one lucky kiddo per flight. Great pictures and better memories! THANK YOU SO MUCH AIR MILFORD!
Fantastic experience. One of the highlights of our tour of New Zealand. Experienced and knowledgeable pilot who made the trip more memorable. If you can afford it far better than sitting on the bus, a real treat. Highly recommend.
I thought Milford Sound visit would be the highlight of my trip. It turns out it wasn’t part of my trip at all. I booked the flight/cruise trip to Milford for my family even though we could drive there. The tickets were quite expensive but it’s Christmas, we would like to get the best out of our time there. When we arrived at the Air Milford office at 8:20 a.m. on the flight day, they postponed the morning departure due to bad weather and asked us to call at 11:30 a.m. for the afternoon departure at 1:30 p.m. When I called them at 11:31 a.m., they asked us to be at their office by 12:00 p.m. We rushed there and did an air tour over Milford Sound for an hour. Apparently, the cruise was cancelled without any explanation! The team claimed that they had told all passengers the flight/cruise had changed to flight only. Obviously, I wasn’t informed. What made me feel bad was when I saw other flights gliding as usual around Milford and cruises operating as usual in the afternoon. The decision to cancel the cruise was just slack. Again, no official reason has been given, they can push everything to weather anyways. They refunded 30% of the payment due to my strong request, compared to their initial willingness to refund only 13.5%. So this is my experience, I am sure there are ones had amazing experience too. I just feel like they should highlight the chances of cancellation on the booking page so the ones who plan to visit Milford Sounds can have a better understanding of the situations and make more suitable choices.
My wife and I really enjoyed this morning trip to Milford sound. We chose to take this flight and cruise package and the flight over saved us around 8 hours as the alternative would be to take a bus or having to drive a rental car from Queenstown where we were based. The trip package was amazing and included a pickup from hotel to the local airport and return to hotel at the end of trip. The staff were friendly and our pilot Antony Sproull was first class, well mannered and personable. The flight was in a 14 seat Cessna of which Air Milford has 4 of this planes in their fleet. Antony provided commentary during the flight of mountains, waterfalls and famous trails. Anthony flew the plane smoothly and the take off and landings were a perfect 10. The chartered watercraft we had as part of the package at Milford sound was only 50% full (plenty of space) with warm muffins and coffee included and was clean and warm with an inside seating area out of the elements and a viewing deck up top. My wife and I really enjoyed Air Milford and would highly recommend their packages.
We had an excellent experience with Air Milford on our fly/cruise/fly trip to Milford Sound on December 2nd. The entire team was professional, courteous, and genuinely helpful from start to finish. The weather was perfect—sunny and clear—and one of us even had the chance to sit in the copilot seat, which was phenomenal and so appreciated. The flight felt safe, smooth, and unforgettable. The cruise itself was equally impressive. Air Milford partnered us with a smaller boat carrying a smaller group, which made the experience far more intimate and enjoyable. The guide was fantastic: friendly, knowledgeable, and full of insights about Milford Sound’s geology, wildlife, and history. Yes, the trip is a significant investment, but it’s absolutely worth it. We consider it a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the highlight of our month-long trip to New Zealand. We took loads of photos and will remember this day forever. Milford Sound is spectacular and unlike anywhere else. If you’re in the Queenstown area, don’t miss it. We highly recommend Air Milford.
What a fantastic flight. We flew Air Milford from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back. Experience included a cruise around Milford Sound. Whilst the cruise was nice the most spectacular aspect is the flight. There and back by different routes and absolutely spectacular scenery. We were lucky with the weather and flew on the day we booked but apparently there are a lot of days when you can’t fly because of the weather. So my advice is if in Queenstown for a while book early in your stay to give some contingency.
