We opted for this coach tour for the comfort on a long day's drive. The coach was comfortable and full of approx 56 daytrippers. Our driver and tour leader, Sonya was very good and kept the group on time at sightseeing and comfort stops on the way to Milford Sound. She was also a great photographer and ensured everyone had their photo taken at iconic spots. The only issue we had was the crowd on the boat, especially when it rained. People were stumbling over each other to get a photo and there were not enough dry and undercover spots for everyone to be seated.

Queenstown, New Zealand, sits on the shores of the South Island’s Lake Wakatipu, set against the dramatic Southern Alps. Renowned for adventure sports, it’s also a base for exploring the region’s vineyards and historic mining towns. Take in the sights as you head out of town and toward the incredible Fiordland.
Te Anau is a beautiful town on the South Island of New Zealand. It’s known as a gateway to Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound. The region is home to endangered, flightless takahē birds and abundant trout in Lake Te Anau. Enjoy a short break here on your way to Milford Sound, in order to break up the journey, grab a coffee, and stretch your legs.
This beautiful valley is glaciated with steep sides and a flat floor. It's between half a kilometre to two kilometres wide and has a shingle riverbed floor, which is constantly being changed by the Eglinton River. This is an incredible stop you will make as apart of your journey to Milford Sound with Southern Discoveries.
Enjoy a stroll among small lakes with stunning reflections of the Earl Mountains, should weather be permissive on the day. This is an easy, short walk off the Milford Road.
Interpretation panels show the effect of avalanches on the Milford Road and provide information on the wildlife of the Eglinton Valley. Visitor amenities include toilets and a telephone (card payment only).
Lake Gunn is a strikingly beautiful lake in the South Island of New Zealand.
Take in great views of the upper Hollyford Valley while you fill up your water bottle from this glacier fed spring. Friendly Keas (a New Zealand alpine parrot) love this area so it's a great stop for some kea spotting.
At an altitude of 945 metres above sea level and 1.2 kilometres in length, the unlined road tunnel allows access through sheer rock to Milford Sound with a gradient of 1 in 10. Completed in 1953, traffic lights control the traffic flow through the tunnel. An incredible part of your journey along the Milford Road.
The Cleddau River is a beautiful river of New Zealand. It flows into the head of Milford Sound. You'll see many parts of this river as you journey along the Milford Sound road.
Milford Sound is a fiord in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rainforests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls, which plummet down its sheer sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory offers views of rare black coral and other marine life. Boat tours are a popular way to explore.
Exchange your pass and board your Nature Cruise. Your unforgettable journey on the water starts here!
Mitre Peak is a beautifully dramatic mountain in the South Island of New Zealand, located on the shore of Milford Sound. It is one of the most photographed mountain peaks in the entire country.
Milford’s second-highest waterfall is the Stirling Falls, a staggering 151m in height – three times the height of Niagara Falls, but the 1,300m mountain behind displaces this incredible height. This is the famous waterfall that Hugh Jackman ‘jumped off’ in the movie Wolverine. The sheer drop of the Stirling Falls allows boats to get right underneath – it’s an incredible feeling to have the power of 151m worth of glacial water falling so close to you.
Nestled behind the world famous Mitre Peak, the Sinbad Gully is characterised by extremely steep glacially carved walls punctuated by near vertical granite cliffs. These walls slowed pest invasion into the gully and as a result a number of unique native species remain in the Sinbad. Southern Discoveries is passionate about preserving Milford Sound’s beauty for future generations which is why it’s a key partner in a major conservation project – the Sinbad Sanctuary Project. The aim is to see the valley of New Zealand’s most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully is at the base of Mitre Peak) become a sanctuary for native species.
The stunning Lady Bowen Falls is Milford’s highest waterfall. It plunges 162m from a hanging valley into the head of Milford Sound and provides electricity for the Milford Sound township by feeding a small hydroelectric scheme, as well as being the water source for the settlement.

Our driver was Greg and he was quirky and hilarious! He really made the drive there, especially because it is so long. He is very knowledgeable and has some fun stories. Definitely recommend! The cruise was really peaceful and nice too, staff were all very friendly and helpful.
We joined the Southern Discovery small group +VIP Captain cruise from Queenstown to Milford Sound in Oct 2026 Excellent experience. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The bus was very comfortable with individually multi adjustable function and the ride was very smooth. The cruise with VIP section is the best part with beautiful food, beverages, private viewing area and very friendly helpful staff. Excellent trip and well worth it .
Incredible experience with the team. I booked the Small Group Travel & Captains VIP Cruise ex Queenstown. It was totally worth it! Chelsea and Ali were both amazing and very friendly! They made sure we had a comfortable ride the whole time. I even got a free instax photo, how awesome was that! Tim who looked after us during the cruise was also great! I had a wonderful time! The tour iself felt very private! I would highly recommend this tour😍
Had a great time at Milford Sound on a sunny beautiful day and had the best tour guide Petr! He knew so much about New Zealand I felt like I learned a lot and had a great trip thanks to him!
Absolutely loved this it was really amazing Our guide Sam and Julia were so good, friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel at ease The whole trip was awesome and senerary was worth it Thank you so much for all the effort you guys put into the tours
Fantastic day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Very comfortable coach, everything ran to time and there were some lovely stops along the way. Our driver, Yoda, was very experienced and knowledgeable and kept us informed of history and nature as we travelled. The cruise was beautiful and we were lucky enough to see penguins, fur seals and dolphins :)
Absolutely worth it... Amazing guide, and the views are just... Wow...
A very long day but well worth it! Our guide, Haymish, was great and his stories and knowledge about New Zealand and the scenery around us helped the drive pass by (as did looking at the beautiful views out the window!). We had a few stops on the way for coffee/breakfast, opportunities to see some lakes, rivers, and other scenic points, and to stretch our legs. The Milford Sound cruise was incredible and worth the drive! Would recommend this trip to anyone visiting NZ.
Amazing tour and views! Enjoyed every bit of the trip. Our driver, Vaughan (I think that was his name!), had great commentary and knowledge, which made the trip even more enjoyable. Would 100% do another tour with this company!
Hamish is THE MAN🙌 smoothe drive, entertaining, informative, helpful and very accommodating to everyone! This tour was a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience. A MUST DO for sure. Thanks to Hamish and the team for a memorable day.
Great day travelling to cruise the Milford Sound with Southern Discoveries in one of their glass top buses. The bus driver 'Brownie' as he calls himself was very informative about the areas we drove through and made a few photo stops along the way. The boat was beautiful and the buffet lunch we paid for ahead of time offered a variety of delicious options to please all palates. This tour company is centrally located in Queenstown where we boarded the bus but they also picked up other groups at their hotels along the way. I highly recommend booking with Southern Discoveries. They are top notch!
This tour was top knotch! Ellie was the best guide, so funny and kind and thoughtful, saved us a set of 4 seats together on the bus when we boarded, suggesting we stock up on lunch items in te Anau, and so informative, with lots of local knowledge along the way. We noticed of all the buses, southern discoveries has the most modern one and also has a glass roof so u can see the alps as you drive, plus ph charger. The 2 hour boat tour is the best, if u drive all that way, of course a longer boat ride is the choice. Jack was an excellent driver too. It was the highlight day of a 2 week NZ trip for us!
Coach crew, Nick and Ally were great! Lot of knowledge and they were so funny and kind. We also had great experience on the boat, with Jess as a guide. We were lucky enough to see dolphins and seals! Everything was going great and we didn't have any issues on our trip.
We had an absolutely wonderful experience on our journey to Milford Sound, and it was truly made special by the amazing team of Southern Discoveries! A big thank you to Jas from Lady Bowen Cruise, who was exceptional throughout the cruise. Jas was warm, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable, making the entire experience both informative and enjoyable. The way everything was explained, along with the friendly approach, really enhanced our appreciation of the stunning scenery. We would also like to sincerely appreciate Bus Captain Peter and the driver Jack for the journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound. The drive was long but absolutely seamless, thanks to their professionalism, safe driving, and great attitude. The commentary along the way, smooth handling of the bus, and well-timed stops made the trip comfortable and memorable. Overall, a truly 5-star experience from start to finish. Highly recommend this team to anyone planning a trip to Milford Sound!
This was a long day be really enjoyable. Our driver Greg was excellent. We paid extra for the buffet…that was a mistake.
Our tour guide, Vaughn, was excellent and made the trip for us. We would whole heartedly recommend him to others who decide to make this trip! We are from Maine and were a little disappointed not to see much in the way of marine life. However, the day was absolutely beautiful and we are both glad we got to experience Milford Sound and the fun of listening to all of Vaughn’s stories about the region! He warned us that seeing marine life wasn’t a guarantee, but as we stated above, Vaughn more than made up for it! Ralph and Josie Davies Harpswell, Maine
Milford Sound Coach and Cruise tour was beautiful. However, working with Viator—retrieving the tickets and getting the information about where to meet for the tour was very frustrating and time consuming. We won’t use Viator again. Many phone calls and emails were made. Their customer service was excellent, but we felt it could have been avoided.
Very professional and satisfying experience. Would suggest it to anyone. It is a long day, but they do it so well.
A wonderful experience. All was well organized with scenic stops on the way. The glass top bus made the trip especially beautiful and is highly recommended! The service and comnication with the office were excellent.
Incredible experience! It was very wet and very windy, but SO worth being up in the top deck to experience how special Milford Sound's history and geography is. Incredible scenery and beauty. Very educational and fun tour guide. Unforgettable.
What an extraordinary experience. Even though the busride was Long, it didn’t seem that long, due to Elli, our Tourguide and her funny Stories and the many breaks we had to make Fotos and stretch our legs and buy Snacks. MILFORD Sound on a Ferry speaks for itself. Absolut astonishing. Not to be missed. Highly recommend this tour.
Jack and Peter were brilliant, Peter was funny and had good knowledge & the staff at on the boat were great would highly recommend to anyone, was a great way to spend my 50th birthday
My tour was yesterday. I forgot the driver’s name. The driver is friendly, funny and excellent driver. The boat buffet food is good. The boat approach the waterfall very close. Overall is a good experience.
It's our family's first ever trip to the South Island and deciding to book the MIlford Sound Coach-Cruise tour from Queenstown with Southern Discoveries was the best decision ever. It made this holiday an experience to remember forever! Booked it online with ease and their reminder emails nearing the date were very helpful. The coach was very comfortable and exceptional. The glass roof top allowed us to thoroughly enjoy the breathtaking views, from both sides of the coach and atop. It all felt surreal! Our driver and guide, Keith all the more made it very interesting with the extensive information and stories he shared, coupled with lots of humour and he even facilitated a game contest among the passengers. It really made the 8 hours coach ride enjoyable, pleasurable and engaging. He knew the route so well, brought us to amazing stops and gave us ample time to take pictures and appreciate the awesome sceneries. Milford Sound was both spectacular and magical with towering fiords, beautiful waterfalls, and amazing wildlife. The Southern Discoveries boat ride was incredible and the crew equally gracious, welcoming and helpful. The live commentary of the captain and interesting insights about the geology, wildlife and history of the Fiordland made us appreciate this place even more. We also enjoyed sipping our hot drinks whilst feeling the mist of the waterfall when the boat went nearer for the experience of everyone. Wow! Its a 5/5 experience of a lifetime. Thank you very much Southern Discoveries for such an incredible tour. Thanks to Keith and to the cruise crew. We thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it and will definitely be coming back. Have already passed on recommendations to families and friends. Thank you.
First and foremost our driver / guide Vaughan was amazing. Greet everyone with cheeriness at 6:30am and kept up the enthusiasm and good will for 13 hours! Amazing. Then there are the stops for awesome vistas all explained and narrated by Vaughan. Finally, and best of all, was the cruise around Milford Sound. The waterfalls, snowy peaks, dolphins, seals, sheer cliffs and pristine waters make for a “bucket list” day.
A very well organised tour in a comfortable coach. Our coach driver Stan was an excellent driver and kept us informed with procedures and interesting facts. We loved the stops along the way to Milford Sound. The boat trip was great with a very informative commentary and a delicious lunch.
We thoroughly enjoyed our coach and cruise with Keith as our driver. He was so accommodating and knowledgeable and really helped make our day run smoothly. It is a long day, but the time passes quickly with so much to see. I highly recommend this company and trip!
well organised, drivers like guide and stops at some places take photo not doing the duty but they like fellow travellers hats off
Amazing trip from Queenstown to milford sound. The guide was very experienced and fun! Cruise was beautiful. I will definitely recommend this tour to friends and family. Thanks
The entire experience was much smoother than I expected, especially for this time of year. For such a long ride with so many travelers and tour buses, the stops were short, well-timed, and straight to the point, which made the trip really enjoyable. I truly feel like we saw everything we could, and even more. Our driver had everything down to a science. I honestly believe that thanks to him, I never felt crowded or anxious at any point. Everything ran smoothly, and traffic never felt overwhelming. We choose the buffet, food was tasty with good variety, I think that the lunch boxes looked good as well, and they had food and drinks to purchase on board as well. Would definitely recommend — 10/10 😀
Beautiful weather. Excellent tour guide. Delicious lunch. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’nnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
If you’re going on a trip to Milford sound from Queenstown I would recommend the coach-cruise combination as opposed to the self drive. We got so much information from our guide and the ride is four hours each way. There are stops along the way you’d probably miss if you drove yourself. It’s a no-brainer in my opinion. Our guide Ellie was excellent. Gave us so much information. Our coach ride was super comfortable and smooth thanks to our highly experienced driver, Vaughn, also an extensive source of knowledge. Together they were definitely the A-team. The cruise itself was also excellent, with the crew bringing the boat very close to waterfalls (of which there were many since we went on a rainy day) and valuable commentary.
Great day trip (although a long day, well worth it). You have the opportunity (at extra cost) to fly back to Queenstown from Milford Sound by either fixed wing plane or helicopter, well worth it if a fine day. The driver, (Stan) was excellent with enough dialogue to make the trip fun to be on. Excellent organisation and logistics. Would do this trip again when next in NZ.
So worth the money & time. The coach bus was comfortable and we had great views of the fjords and valleys. Our driver was safe & very informative.
Absolutely incredible scenes on the cruise, truly feels like you’re on another planet. Our driver/guide Chris was fantastic, incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly.
Seamless arrangement that made you worries free since booking till end of trip. Our guide Keith is experienced, thorough, professional and patience with different nationalities of passengers. Other than his sharing knowledge along the whole tour, what we value most is he always gives you heads up alert on up coming scenic point for photo takings and valuable tips on the cruise. I enjoyed the whole tour and the arrangement by southern discoveries.
Shayall (sorry if misspelled) is an amazing tour guide. From keeping my group together (cos we booked separately hehe) being well informed to all the jokes he slipped in here and there lol. It was an amazing experience overall and I have to say personally, the tour bus topped the cruise but both had amazing views nonetheless. Would 100% recommend and if you're in Shayall's group you'll be in for a treat! Thank you and thank you Southern Discoveries!
I recently toured Milford Sound with Southern Discoveries and it was an absolute pleasure. Our guide and driver, Shails (apologies if I’ve spelt that wrong!), was fantastic! his humour, stories, and knowledge made the long bus ride fly by. He really looked after us and kept the journey fun and engaging. Milford Sound itself is breathtaking, and seeing it with a company that makes the whole experience seamless only added to the magic. If you’re considering booking with Southern Discoveries, I highly recommend it, there was never a dull moment, and the whole trip felt so well taken care of.
Our trip to Milford Sound was amazing! What a beautiful part of the world! The drive from Queenstown was so scenic with breath taking views. There was more spectacular scenery to enjoy on the cruise and we were lucky to see bottlenose dolphins, tiny Fiordland penguins and seals. Our trip was made even more special thanks to our friendly tour guides, Greg and Ellie. Also thanks to Stan who helped to sort out a problem at the beginning of the trip . A fantastic day trip. Thank you!
Greg our driver was fun and engaging with the passengers and had a wealth of local knowledge which he shared . The cruise was fantastic and the weather made it more enjoyable with lots of waterfalls and also high winds which added to the fun out in the open up top.
Overall a fantastic tour. Communication leading up was fantastic and Greg our driver on the day provided great commentary and was very professional. Unfortunately our boat ride at Milford Sound was cut short due to incoming bad weather but the company ensured we were able to maximise our time there.
This tour was absolutely amazing, I’m so glad I went! I was traveling solo and felt totally comfortable and everyone was super friendly. Our tour guide was great and the trip was planned perfectly. Plenty of bathroom breaks and stops to break up the long drive. The cruise of the Milford sound was truly one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever done. I pre-purchased the picnic lunch and thought that was quite good and came with a lot of food (sandwich, crisps, cheese/crackers, apple, oatmeal cookies, and chocolate). Would recommend this tour to anyone!
Beautiful destination with wonderful views all along the trip. Our driver Pumbaa was such a great tour director..……..
We joined the Milford Sound Coach & Cruise with Southern Discoveries on 13th July, and it was an absolutely superb experience. Travelling as a family, we were impressed with how smooth and well organised the entire day was. Our coach captain, Stan, was outstanding , friendly, informative, and clearly passionate about what he does. His commentary kept the long drive interesting, and he made great stops for photos along the way. The cruise through Milford Sound was breathtaking, with spectacular views from start to finish. A truly memorable day. Highly recommended!
The drive is long but the coach really does make it a lot easier and more enjoyable. Our driver was Keith and he was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He had so much local knowledge that we would’ve missed had we done the drive ourselves. The staff on the cruise were really helpful, even periodically offering to take photos of groups out on the deck. Would recommend.
Keith our coach driver was absolutely amazing 😎.make sure he drives you from Queenstown to the sounds and back. A walking talking driving encyclopaedia. He must be An AI . Thanks Keith!
Great experience and great host. Our bus driver Shale was very informative and the occasional dad joke.. well worth the trip. But we upgraded and flew back instead of return by bus to see all up high.. so worth it.
The views was fantastic unfortunately a coach driver was extremely rude. My group of 6 people were kicked off from his coach and transferred to another coach. Second driver was a nice man.
What an absolutely amazing experience! We went in crazy weather, but made it all worth it. The waterfalls at Milford were amazing and all of the waterfalls along the way. Shale was our guide and he was great, told jokes and had some history about many areas along the way. Amazing!
