Justin and Pete showed us a great time! It was the perfect blend of LOTR facts and stops, local history, nature, and adventure. We will be talking about this day for the rest of our lives.

Amazing ride with spectacular views — absolutely worth it. LOTR fans will surely enjoy the tour, as Jimmy and Hannah shared plenty of interesting and engaging information throughout the trip. They were both incredibly friendly, informative, and made the experience even more enjoyable.
This trip was so much fun! I had two different guides: Aidan in the morning and Pete in the afternoon. The 4WD experience was amazing as well. We got to travel on narrow and steep roads, cross rivers, visit many film locations, and enjoy great sightseeing in general. The guides were very knowledgeable and shared personal experiences, which made the tour feel even more special and personal. I highly recommend it!
The tour was a fun day and enjoyed by all of the family, even those that we not into LOTR, seeing the spectacular scenery and the 4wd adventuring is a great day regardless. The two tour guides we had (morning and afternoon) were great and knowledgeable on all aspects and made the trip enjoyable. My boys enjoyed the morning but liked the afternoon panning and 4WD through the river more as very different to other adventures we had across our trip. A great experience and visit to some spectacular scenery in Queenstown that everyone enjoyed.
Matt, our guide & driver is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was a great day visiting some of the LOTR places but the drive to Skippers Canyon was awesome! We also had a lot of fun trying out gold panning. Definitely a must-do adventure for everyone!
First off, in the historic Queenstown tradition, I flipped a coin to decide which tour guide gets "top billing" here. I took the Full-Day LOTR Nomad Safaris 4WD tour in early Feb 2026 with guides Justin and Nick. Both were awesome in totally different ways-- Justin is a wealth of LOTR information, humor, trivia, and fandom. I appreciated that immensely. Every part of the ride to Paradise and back (literally and figuratively) was a blast. I walked through Ithilien, my friends. No one had to tell me where I was. It was immediately obvious where I was standing. 😁 There's really no better feeling than stepping into Middle Earth. We spent time at Isengard, saw the land around Beorn's hut, the grass of Minas Tirith (Pelennor, but only in certain shots), Caradhras and the Misty Mountains in the distance. We drove alongside Lake Wakatipu which must be one of the most beautiful roads on Earth , and stopped at a very well-loved road in Paradise where many things have been filmed. Justin told us all about it-- won't spoil it for you here, but trust me it's unmissable. We even got a little bonus, driving by a hush-hush film set. This wasn't like other tours where you just stop for like 2 minutes and take a photo and load back up. We actually spent time in places, geeked out together, etc. We had tea and biscuits, played in costumes. Justin is a great cinematographer with a cell phone. The voucher lunch in Queenstown was way above average. We hated to part ways with Justin. But then we met Nick, and he was cool too! We went to a surprise LOTR location that we had to guess, which was fun. None of us guessed! But it was really neat to see. You want to talk about the master of offroading...this guy knows what he's doing! We drove through the Dart River (yes, you read that correctly) and he taught us how to pan for gold. I got a gold flake on my first try! That was near the place where they filmed the Nazgul in the Bruinen River. So that absolutely blew my mind. The 4wD experience was so freaking cool. Like being in a Toyota commercial. 🤣 Nick taught us all about the history of Arrowton and gold mining. We saw gold nuggets! He was super cool and into the history of the area. Then he took us up Skipper's Road and HOLY HELL that was amazing. I'm so glad I wasn't driving. 🤣 I would've gone right off the cliff while sightseeing and met my fate like Gollum. And probably wouldn't have cared...because the scenery is that epic. I loved that he told us about all the landmarks, and the land itself. Bottom line: If you're an LOTR fan of any kind, or if you want to see all things beautiful in the Queenstown vicinity, this is the tour. Take it. I loved it. My favorite part? *Everything*.
We had an amazing time getting to different film scene areas and hearing about the behind the scenes facts in those locations, the history of the area, and getting to do some fun photo shoots with the props!
Our tour agent had booked a full day 4 x 4 experience for us. We weren't sure what to expect, but we went with the flow and had a great day. The first part of the day wasn't exactly off roading so much as a sightseeing tour of Lord of The Rings film locations. Our driver was a very jolly chap who gave us lots of facts and anecdotes. The rest of the people on our tour were fully kitted out in LoTR costume and were very enthusiastic and lots of fun. So we didn't feel left out, our driver then produced spare cloaks and swords from the back of the vehicle - when in Mordor... We were provided with a voucher for lunch and dropped off at a place in town. This did feel a little rushed, probably because it was New Year and Queenstown was packed. We were picked up for our afternoon adventure (not a hobbit or elf in sight). Then the off roading commenced! We ploughed through rivers and sped up skinny mountain passes. Exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time! We learnt about queenstown's gold rush, and even did a bit of panning for gold ourselves. The views were spectacular, our drivers were incredibly experienced and totally suicidal 🫣😬
Such a great day! Mike was a wonderful tour guide and very knowledgeable. The LOTR tour was very scenic and beautiful.
Had a great day out with Michael in the morning and Phoebe in the afternoon. Visited some great LOTR locations, which were brilliantly illustrated and explained by the guides. Also managed an exhilirating ride down Skippers Canyon, a wild ride up the Arrow River, and even managed to find a spec of gold! Only sorry we didn't take more videos. And of course, we did a bit of dressing up! :-)
Felt like I was in the presence of the lord of the rings characters playing their part and got to see and experience the most beautiful parts of Queenstown
The safari was an amazing trip for all ages ,the people were so nice and welcoming, totally worth it ,and I will totally go again.
Such a great day visiting sites from LOTR. All the guides were fantastic, our son even managed to pan a few flakes of gold. Definitely recommend doing this if you are a LOTR fan
I got a private LOTR tour for my husbands 50th birthday. Finley and Justin did an INCREDIBLE job at showing us around the filming sites. They were both very knowledgeable in all things LOTR especially Justin who was a massive fan. Thank you both for a very memorable day.
Had an incredible day out. Turned up for Lord of The Rings and got a better experience than expected. Unfortunately some of the places were inaccessible that the usual tour involves. Jenny more than made up for this with her wealth of knowledge and experience of the areas of New Zealand. Every place we wanted to see we still got to see and everything we missed we still got to do thanks to her ideas. The places we went to we learnt more about The Lord of The Rings and got to see amazing scenery.
Our tour was an unforgettable experience, and we couldn't have asked for a better guide. Queenstown and surrounds have had wild weather so the team had to re-plan on the fly to make sure their customers had an amazing time, and they did that beautifully. Jenny was our driver and guide for both halves of the day, and she really made this tour an excellent experience. She was friendly, knowledgeable, passionate about the area and the tour, and also an excellent, fun and safe driver. Thank you to Nomad Safaris and Jenny in particular for an outstanding day in Queenstown.
This was a great experience. Super well organized and Phoebe, our driver for the day was very helpful with giving all the relevant information to all the places we visited, also making the road super easy. Despite the weather, we still accommodated managed to see all the places. Totally recommended
Must do for everyone, especially for fans of the movie. Large area covered showing several spots, and with some adventure. Justin was the guide and made everything better.
Simply amazing. Dan (the driver) was the best guide ever! Office staff was friendly and helped us with baggage transfer.
Adam the tour guide is very engaging and extremely knowledgeable about all the topics of the tour. Very informative and appreciative.
Jenny was absolutely brilliant - wouldn’t want anyone else doing this tour! We truly enjoyed every second of it and are only sad that it has to come to an end. Highly recommended for any LOTR fan!!!!
Great fun trip. To Glenorchy in the morning and off-road up the river to Arrowtown in the afternoon looking for gold. Our guides were great (Dan in the morning Adam in the afternoon), friendly chatty and knowledgeable. Beautiful scenery. Highly recommended.
Our tour guide Justin took us on both of the two half day adventures. We started out going out to Glenorchy and Mount Aspiring National Park. For a little fun we had capes and swords at our morning tea stop to video a scene as a moment. After being dropped back into town for lunch (you get a lunch voucher for a local cafe) we headed out for the second part of the day which saw us head out to Arrowtown and Skippers Canyon. We got to do plenty of river crossings in the 4x4 and the kids had a go at panning for gold in during our afternoon tea stop. All in all a fantastic day out and our guide Justin provided great local commentary along the way.
We really enjoyed the full day 4WD Lord of the Rings tour! Our guide, David, was professional and fun and a great driver! He knew so much about the Lord of the Rings, cinematography, and the history the places we visited. He was excited to share the details of how the different scenes were filmed or made from composite shots. I learned a lot more behind the scenes information. He happily took photos for us at the different locations. He carried a set of really nice images from the LOTR movies to compare to our locations. We had a small group with 5 people on the morning tour and 6 in the afternoon tour. Skipper's Canyon was exciting with our snow chains and some snow. It was exciting crossing the river in Arrowtown. We learned about its history. We stopped for tea / hot chocolate and banana bread and did some gold panning. We stopped at a lot of great spots throughout the day. We had lunch vouchers for Balls and Bangles which had good bagel sandwiches and donuts. In Paradise, in the afternoon, we had more tea / hot chocolate and snacks and we did photoshoots with some really nice LOTR replica props. We were surrounded by beautiful scenery all of the time. I smile when I see the photos we took. When we were returning to Queenstown, David gave us restaurant recommendations for dinner in Queenstown! This was an amazing day of adventure, beautiful scenery, and LOTR. We would love to do this again!
The tour today with Nick was fabulous & it was an awesome way to spend our last day in Queenstown. The weather wasn’t perfect, but the four wheeling & commentary was top notch. We enjoyed the gold panning & having a play with movie props at some of the film locations. Can’t recommend this experience enough whether you’re a LOTR fan or not you’ll get to see places you ordinarily wouldn’t get to go. Thanks Nick we had a fantastic time!
The tour was fantastic! The views were amazing and our guides (Phoebe and Dan) were extremely knowledgeable and personable. Totally recommend!
We had an amazing tour yesterday with our guide Ginny. She took us to the most amazing views and seemed to know everything about lord of the rings, local history, nature and preserving nature programs. So many beautiful scenes from the movie, so much extra information, so many amazing views. We where so happy to have the full day with Ginny, it was such a day to remember!!
My husband and I had a great time! The afternoon portion was particularly fun (I think the Queenstown portion as opposed to the morning in Glenorchy?) We got some fun into about the film sites, but mostly tramping through riverbeds in the car felt like a roller coaster! Would highly highly recommend to casual or extreme LOTR fans looking for a fun day. Jenny in particular was a great guide - she really cared about us having a good experience, even if it meant adding a little extra time to her day / doing things out of order to accommodate us. Loved it!
This tour is so much fun. We spent the morning going around Lord of the Rings sites, and the guides have great stories and pictures to tell about the filming of the movie and where things were seen. They pulled out capes and swords for us to play with. If you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings, you must go on this tour. Then the afternoon we went four wheeling through arrow river and panned for gold and saw more incredibly beautiful Landscape. It was a great day. Dan was a great guide!
Incredible experience! The views are fantastic! We had a blast traveling around to various LOTR and NZ sites. Our guides Adrian and Nick were engaging, knowledgeable, interesting, and did an outstanding job catering to our group. We enjoyed the costumes- especially the swords, and loves the off-road drive. Thank you for making today especially memorable!
Nomad Safari LOTR full day tour was fantastic. I highly recommend. Jorge, Jenny and Nico were awesome. If you book and get them, you are in for a treat.
We had an fantastic day doing the full day 4WD tour taking in the beautiful views of several filming locations of LOTR, David was our tour guide, his knowledge and enthusiasm for the movies was a bonus to an already great morning. We then stopped back in Queenstown for lunch (Balls & Bagels - absolutely amazing!) After lunch we went off again to look for more filming locations taking in stunning views of the whole of Queenstown. We did gold panning in Arrowtown and had to the most brilliant 4WD experience up and down the river. Totally brilliant day out.
This was a fantastic 1/2 day tour - We think Amelia was our guide - in any event she was so good - we are not huge Lord of the Rings Tour but we loved this tour. We crossed the river multiple times, visited the places where they filmed the series, visited Arrowtown and drove along “the most dangerous road in NZ on our way to Skipper Canyon! I have a fear of heights but our driver was so careful and the scenery is jaw dropping! Just not describable really. Just a very memorable day. This was a private trip with only my wife and I in the 4WD vehicle. Our friends did a different tour with 6 people in the vehicle. If you have read other reviews I have done you know I have a fear of heights but I felt safe with our driver on this gravel road along the cliff and back.
Great trip seeing this amazing town but also the Lord of the Rings locations. Guides were great and very friendly, happy to hear about your life and what brings you to New Zealand!
Fantastic tour! Our tour guide (Hannah) was terrific!! She was knowledgable and informative about New Zealand, Queenstown and the surrounding areas, and of course the LOTR filing locations and background movie magic. The 4WD parts of the trip are unreal! Such a perfect tour.
We had a great day. A cool way to see the beautiful scenery around Queenstown whilst learning bits about the behind the scenes tricks and sets of LOTR movies. The 4WD river crossings were also fun.
The best tour I’ve ever done. If you’re a fan of the movies you won’t be disappointed. The guides were excellent for both legs of the journey, really friendly and full of knowledge on all topics, especially Pete. The scenery is very recognisable and the guides carry a photograph reference of all filming locations.
Fantastic tour. Our guide was exceptional and well versed on the countryside and Lord of the Rings particularly. The sights were amazing and I took so many pictures. We stopped for refreshments at some spectacular spots. I would recomment this company with a 10+. Thank you Jeffrey for a really cool adventure.
What a fun day! Justin was amazing. He took us all over and was very sweet to consider all of our needs. We made new friends and overall just had a blast. I can't believe what all we were able to do in a day. If y'all can't decide between LOTR and Scenic, trust me when I say you get plenty of both.
Such a cool adventure! Our drivers were both Jenny in Boromir and Joe in Grimas: Joe was kind and courteous to warn us when things got “bumpy” and you could tell he had a love for LOTR. Jenny was incredible, she shared anecdotes and literally made the tour with her hospitality and fun loving spirit. The actual locations and drives were both breath-taking through the views and the slightly scary roads. And they offered afternoon tea twice! Lovely. 10/10 recommend and if possible, ask for Jenny!
If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings, you must do this! Knowledgeable, fun guides. Thrilling scenery, wild 4-whheling Loved it!
Brilliant tour, Brilliant guide. The tour delivered everything it promised and more. For die hard LOTR fans this is a must. Big shout out to our guide Adrian for being a top guide and a top bloke
Jen was fun and knew everything! Even if you had not seen any movies, the tour was engaging and interesting and gave you a real sense for the incredible variety of geography in NZ…and at each stop, she showed photo from movies to match precisely where you were. (Tour co. selects lunch site if do all day, would have liked healthier choice.)
It was all I’d hoped to see. Especially enjoyed the river ride. Tea and banana bread most welcome. Guides outstanding and friendly. I wanted a cloak and you were out of stock. BIG disappointment.
We went on the LOTR full day tour with Soap as our authentic and charming guide. The day was well run, stunning scenery, great storys and good 4x4 driving. It exceeded all of our expectations.
Hopi (Soap) was a great guide and driver who provided us with an excellent experience and tour! He also provided great insight into the Māori culture
Great day from start to finish!! Beautiful drive along the lake in a fun backcountry style 4WD. Our guide, Erin, was fun, informative, and a good driver. Great blend of pointing out LOTR sites, scenery stops, an a fun stop in the woods for tea/coffee while we donned hooded cloaks and played with a variety of LOTR swords. A high point for all LOTR nerds!! Afternoon was super fun 4WD trekking---fording streams and panning for gold!! Again, Erin did a great job. Fun for all ages!!
Our guide Erin was just wonderful. She made this trip to one of our Highlights during our new zealand travel. She brought us to many film locations and had a lot of background information about the film. We also could enjoy a search for gold in the arrow river in the afternoon and got a lot of information about the area besides the film topic. We would totally recommend it! Thanks Erin for that perfect day!
Our tour with Nomad Safaris was one of the best things we did in New Zealand! Jono, our guide was so personable, knowledgable, and a great AWD vehicle operator. We got to see so many locations from Lord of the Rings and had a great time seeing the amazing scenery along the way. The tea/cake stops were a fun touch as well as the panning for gold. We had an AMAZING day.
This was definitely a great tour, seeing as it was able to encompass everything Lord Of The Rings around Queenstown + Arrowtown, along with Glenorchy, Paradise and Beyond. Justin (morning tour guide) and Peter (afternoon tour guide) were very knowledgeable around where scenes were filmed, even brought out props and made us laugh a load.
