The lunch options. We were not offered or could not find the buffet option and had to settle for the picnic lunch option.

Tour departs from this location
Lake Wakatipu is the longest lake in New Zealand and the third largest. Wakatipu is a Maori word meaning, ‘Hollow of the Demon’. The lake has an unusual rhythmic rise and fall in the water level, approximately 12cm every 5 minutes. In Maori legend this strange rhythmic rise and fall of the water level, is said to be the beating heart of a monster from the deep depths of the lake.
Te Anau is known as the Walking Capital of the World. The mountains to the left are the Kepler Mountains, home of the Kepler Track, one of the popular walking tracks in the area. Te Anau is the gateway to Milford Sound and the Fiordland National Park. The town has a permanent population of approximately 2,500 people but this fluctuates greatly in summer when the town gets an influx of fishermen, hunters, outdoor pursuit seekers and holiday makers. It’s a popular holiday destination. We stop here for morning & afternoon breaks and comfort stops.
Eglington Valley is named by Quintin MacKinnon, who named the valley after the Earl of Eglington of Scotland. We will be following the Eglington River whose source is the small lake of Lake Fergus, which is situated in the Main Divide of the Southern Alps. The glacial valley of the Eglington is not only a truly magnificent place for photos, but also a perfect place to put the size of this valley into perspective. The distance from this road to the base of the tree-line; out to the left is 2.4km. An extremely large glacier was responsible for clearing out this valley thousands of years ago. Everything in this region is huge so it is very easy to lose perspective of this as we travel through the mountains
Mirror Lakes where most of the time the nearby mountains are reflected in the lakes. Being small, the lakes have less chance of being roughened by the winds compared to their larger counterparts and the large quantity of tannins leached from the soil into the waters give these lakes a much clearer mirror effect than many of the other lakes in the region. It is here you have the opportunity to walk along a boardwalk listening for Bellbirds and Tui’s which are protected native birds, whilst watching Black Scaups dive for food on the bottom of the lake between the various species of beech trees. These forests are said to be 135 million years old. We will drop you off at one end of the walkway and you can re-join the coach in 10 minutes at the far end of the board walk if you wish to go for a walk.
Monkey Creek is named after one of three Government employees entrusted yearly to camp here and find a path through the mountains. Eventually his monkey like climbing skills allowed him to find a path, which though not particularly safe, was used for many years for guided walking tours. It is here we have the opportunity to drink the water or full your water bottles. Because this water is flowing directly from the mountains it is one of the few remaining places it is safe to taste fresh water without contamination and you realise without chemicals doesn’t really have a taste but is extremely refreshing. Be careful filling your water bottles because the water is very cold. Also don’t be surprised if a Kea or two drop in to say hello!
As we head up towards the Homer Tunnel, on the right hand side you can see the remains of a camp including the oven in which the meals and bread were cooked. The shed to the left was designed to house the snow plough and was built in 1983. After its construction it was found that the doorway had not been made wide enough and the plough was not able to be housed there. It is now kept at the camp at Knobs Flat. The building today is known as the Chapel as it is one of the few areas of this region that has never been affected by avalanche.

Located on the shore of Milford Sound. It is one of the most photographed peaks in the country. Part of the reason for its iconic status is its location. Close to the shore of Milford Sound, in the Fiordland National Park in the southwestern South Island, it is a stunning sight. The mountain rises near vertically to 5,560 feet (1,690 m), i.e. just over a mile, from the water of Milford Sound, which technically is a fjord. The peak is actually a closely grouped set of five peaks, with Mitre Peak not even the tallest one, however from most easily accessible viewpoints, Mitre Peak appears as a single point. Milford Sound is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site as declared by UNESCO.

There are not enough words to describe the sights you see travelling to and from Milford Sound. Then there is Milford Sound itself. Absolutely stunning. There are plenty of sights and sounds to take in. On paper the excursion appears to be a very long day. It is but we certainly did not feel it. Our driver Matt was brilliant, his knowledge of the area was 1st class , His chat on the bus was interesing to listen to and he would give pointers of what to see and where. He made it a very enjoyable day. There were a number of stops on the way. Timing was crucial to be at Milford Sound for the cruise, but we were never rushed. One of the best days of our holiday, Can not recomend this excursion highly enough.
Well organised tour, with plenty of photo stops on the way to Milford Sound. Guide was very knowledgeable.
Richard, our bus driver, really made the long bus trip enjoyable for us. He is a native Kiwi and it shows in his love for the land and his extensive knowledge of the area. The photo stops along the way were breathtaking.
Abbi our bus driver and tour guide was very good, informative, humorous and easy to get on with. The trip is long but with breaks along the way it helps to break it up. On the way back we decided to take Abbi’s suggestion of the flight which only took about 35 minutes and we’re so glad we did as the scenery was just wonderful. Michael our pilot was lovely and very informative too. Plus we were eating dinner before our scheduled return on the bus.
A viewing spectacular from Queenstown to Milford and back. Its a long day so better to let someone else do the driving. Our driver Richard was excellent with lots of information during the tour.
Excellent from Queenstown to Milford Sound, good to see a lot of view in natural
Expect a full tour with multiple stops to take pictures. If you don’t select to eat a meal on the cruise, be sure to pack snacks!!
Milford sound was amazing. The boat tour has incredible views. You really won't find this anywhere else. The drive in is also amazing with many views and stopping points. Bus driver had good commentary when you could understand/hear him. The drive home gets long. It would be nice if the bus had a movie or something for that. However just prepare for that and bring your headphones/etc. Definitely check the weather ahead of time. Dress in layers. Bring water and snacks.
It was a whole day trip with buffet lunch. The lunch was delicious and the views were all majestic, not only at the Milford Sound cruise but in all the stops that we made.
It nothing like leaving the driving to someone else. It's a long drive with amazing views. To say the view was breathtaking would be an understatement. Plenty room for a large group. Would highly recommend
Matt was great. Stories and area history along the way. Slowed down so we could get great pics from the bus and several stops along the way to stretch. It's a long day but well worth it for the spectacular scenery. The boat trip was also very nice and provided some good views.
Our driver Hammi ( I think that's how you spell it ) he was polite, funny and genuine about making sure all his guests had a good time. The boat trip /cruise was fabulous. The driver/captain was again full of great information, considerate of his passengers.
Milford sound is a must see area if you are in queenstown. The tour and cruise and the buffet lunch were excellent
Driver was careless and left us abandoned on the way when we were having coffee at a cafe on the way. He did not give us any phone call. We had to take another bus to catch the original bus we had booked and boarded at Queenstown. The driver was so rude and told us to leave the bus when we asked him reason to leave us abandoned on the way. He shouted and said, “I am the boss here and you can leave the bus”. Totally disappointed and seek refund of the cost incurred failing which I shall have no other option but to take legal action for very bad customer service.
Adrian was our bus driver to and From Queenstown Milford Sound Cruise & Glass-Roof Coach Tour- he was knowledgeable with a great listening voice. We had a great journey, felt safe on the road. Little rainy on our day but we were so happy to see all the water falls which we would otherwise not have experienced. The food on board the spirit of Milford was also great. The Captain was great too. Thankyou and keep up the great work. No photos do this place justice for the sheer size and beauty. E. Wicks & J. Butler
Visiting Milford Sound is well worth the time, effort and money. Our driver, Abbi, made the bus trip smooth, engaging, and informative.
Be prepared for a long day, stops on the way to break up the trip, but once there so worth it. Milford Sound is something to see.
I had a wonderful and reflective trip to Milford Sound. Mr. Chao was our driver, who is highly professional and caring to his guests. He knows the perfect timing for scenic spots with detailed interpretation. He gave time and patience for the guests to take pictures. Moreover, Mr. Chao is humorous with his identity, which brought joy for many of us. I want to express my sincere thanks to Mr.Chao for bringing me new perspectives about nature. I enjoy his ride, knowledge and humor along this journey. I wish Mr. Chao and his family all the best.
Adrian was a tremendous guide and it was so amazing to learn about the area and the terrain. We really enjoyed our time and would definitely recommend the experience if you’re traveling in the area!
We had a wonderful day on this trip, our driver was Matt - who was wonderful! He gave us so much information along the drive, and could answer any question we had. It was an informative, entertaining and beautiful 4.30ish hour drive over which we were thoroughly enjoying. The cruise itself was busy, but was beautiful. We ended up flying home after the option was raised by our driver, which was great too! We would’ve enjoyed the trip home just as much on the road with the scenery and the fantastic Kea stops too, but it was magnificent to see from above.
Nothing but amazing. The scenery was magnificent.
Amazing experience! Highly recommend this trip, stunning views, nice staff and driver. Very nice way to experience Milford Sound for a day trip :)
Great views both in the van ride and on the cruise. Entertaining and knowledgeable driver/guide for our tour.
Our tour guide was very informative, the drive did not feel as long as it was because he had so much information to give on the way. The drive was spectacular in with all the snow on the mountain tops. Would definitely recommend this tour.
This is a beautiful drive through the NZ countryside. Our driver, Matt, was really great - witty, interested in our thoughts, sensitive to what would make the tour more enjoyable, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable. I couldn’t hear much of the commentary on the cruise.
It’s a long bus journey with breathtaking landscapes along the way. Very punctual bus guide. Just check if you have taken chicken picnic lunch because one of the snacks contains meat and pork.
Really great bus trip. Driver (Richard) knew his stuff and made the journey memorable. Only downside was the overhead glass needed a clean as couldn’t see out of it.
Wonderful experience, but a long day. On the way plenty of stops and photo opportunities with the bus driver giving us a good commentary on history etc. when we arrived we went into the boat, that was a little chaotic, but manageable, we were directed to our hot buffet lunch, which was fabulous, really delicious and plenty of it with tea and coffee. The boat trip was amazing with beautiful views, we were lucky because it was a beautiful day, although a bit chilly first thing, the trip home seemed very long, and the driver didn’t give any commentary which was not a big deal because the seats were so comfortable and I fell asleep. In conclusion a long day but really worth it.
I went with my friend, but the day before we went was sunny, so it wasn't particularly spectacular, but the scenery was still beautiful, and the tour guide was great.
Starting from bus ride, couch guide, to Milford sound, cruise sand back was a great experience. Also had good weather.
Richard doing all the bird calls hit the ball out of the park. It was more than just commentary. Also, he stopped the bus for an unplanned photo of a kea on a car roof. It was a long, exhausting trip time-wise, but his experience and knowledge made up for all this.
Amazing experience with great commentary from Matt, our tour guide. The tour was well paced with little breaks.
Fun experience, Richard was a great tour guide and provided lots of insight on the long journey to and from Milford Sound
Richard was a marvelous guide and storyteller. Good driver too! Kept us interested the whole long trip. Weather was perfect, the Sound was amazing and the views and scenery awe inspiring.
I booked this trip for myself since I didn’t have a car. The trip overall was great and I felt like we really got to hit a few highlight spots. The bus was comfortable and our driver, Adrian, was friendly. It’s a HUGE group so it felt a bit chaotic at times. The day we went (a Monday) was crazy busy with other bus tour companies, making the experience more crowded than I would’ve liked. I hope to come back to NZ and to visit again but with my own car and spending more time in less crowded spots.
Very pleasant day trip even though the weather wasn't great. Richard, our driver, was very friendly, funny and his commentary very informative.
It’s was a damp day, but didn’t spoil the experience. Only issue was the glass roofed bus. In the rain it leaked like a sleeve
Very well organized trip. Driver Abbi was an eloquent and attentive guide throughout the entire journey. His dedication to the job and his humour made all the difference in the rainy weather.
This is a must do activity despite the long day.Driver was fun and informative and numerous stops along the journey to take in the views.
The sights you will see are absolutely amazing. We managed snow capped mountains in summer which were something else. just be prepared for a long day.staff were great. No regrets I’d do it again and recommend to others for sure
Great day! While the bus trip is long, the scenery is beautiful and relaxing. Abhi our guide and driver was fantastic. The sound/fiord was astounding.
Bring a variety of outer wear, glasses, ability to take lots of pictures, visit all 4 decks, lunch was tasty
A long coach drive to and from queenstown but interesting and informative a good driver the buffet was good
10/10 recommend. It was such a stunning experience. The whole drive out our coach driver Annette was telling stories and history and Maori legends. She shared so much that really enhanced the whole experience. The views are unbelievable and the bus was super comfy with phone chargers in every seat. Bring snacks- it’s a long day of driving :)
Milford sound boat tour is a great experience. The great sights bus was comfortable and our driver Ivan was knowledgeable. Unfortunately he rushed us quite a bit that it felt uncomfortable. Two mins for the sight seeing stops, asked everyone to use the restrooms in the boat since he will leave right after the boat stops, gave a seven min break for restroom and drinks in a crowded cafe he chose in the middle of four hours ride. My kids mostly remember the anxiety around rushing back to bus., falling down and tripping over. The entire experience would have been much better if werent lectured so much about time or given a few extra mins at stops. I request the tour company to enforce minimum resasonable breaks for stops so that it is not upto each driver.
A very long day but so worth it. Even just the views on the drive there are stunning. The guide was amazing! Literally only downside is the journey back again but such a good day.
Matt drove and talked about the area very well. Boat captain gave us a very close experience of the huge waterfall. It was awesome!!! Oh yes food served on boat was well organized and very delicious.
Well organized trip with Richard the buss driver that told great stories during our trip. Be prepared for spending quite some time in the bus
Positives: Milford sound was beautiful, drive was beautiful, and driver had some great stories and information. The cruise was busy but gorgeous. Good communication about pickup/drop off. Good experience for the price overall as other options cost much more. Negatives: We did know this upfront but it was a very long day. Bus seats were a little tight for tall people but probably okay for anyone under 5’7. Picnic lunch was not good, better to bring your own food. They didn’t provide anything to drink with the lunchbox.
