The Macaw (Guacamaya) sanctuary was an amazing experience. Our guide, Eduardo ((Eddie) is a biologist who is passionate about animals and the local area. He shared many local spots with us along our ride into the mountains, setting us up for even more adventures. We then climbed up a spectacular wheel drive road to the sanctuary building, where Eddie gave us an informative overview of the Macaw lifecycle, detailed the family history, nest evolution, and more than that. Plus he shared information and photos of the other wildlife on the sanctuary grounds We then went for an amazing short hike through the property where we saw more than 30-40 Macaw in trees, eating, flying, and hanging out. They had binoculars and a spotting scope to use, but I had brought my own, yet the Macaw were so close, we barely needed them. We also saw a ton of other cool flowers, and even a tarantula. It was a great experience. I highly recommend you visit!

Itinerary
Once you meet your guide we will travel 45 minutes south into the mountains, we will arrive at the macaw conservation area. You will see and enjoy beautiful mountains panoramic views This is one of the only places in Mexico where you can observe these birds in the wild. You will receive a talk about the efforts being made to protect these bird species, and once you have learned about them, we will begin walking along the trails through the forest to observe these birds in their natural environment and flying freely. We will also visit a viewpoint where you will have beautiful views of the mountains. Once we finish the hike and observation, we will take transportation back to Puerto Vallarta.

It was a fun excursion and it did not start until 8 am. Most other bird tours start at 6 am. Ugh! Our tour guy Eddie was great.

Easy short tour in nearby mountains, with a hours walk in the jungle spotting macaws and other wildlife. My guide taught me all about the species and the conservation program . Very friendly too.
I took this tour with my sister and it was an incredible experience. The guides explained everything about the biology of the species and the ecosystem we were in, since they are biologists. Beyond admiring these birds, it was about connecting with the place and nature. The staff’s attention was excellent; they followed up with us throughout the reservation process. They offered us drinks and provided everything we needed to make the tour a great experience. If you have the chance to visit the macaw sanctuary, don’t miss it truly is amazing.
Beautiful activity, Edouardo our guide is excellent. We can see how dedicated Francisco is to the cause. We were lent binoculars, but our experience would be more enjoyable with our own binoculars.

Wooow! One of the best tours I've ever attended. The amount of interesting data about macaws is impressive, they are certainly a majestic animal not only aesthetically, but biologically speaking. The guide super knowledgeable and very friendly. In addition, the story of how this project emerged is admirable.

It was amazing the experience from the very magical path going into the forest and nature from the time you go up to the sanctuary you hear the macaws and arriving at the cabin I was very excited to see all the photographs they have and the information they have of the species is very interesting, the guide explained very well how they do this important work to protect the military macaw and help them to nest.After the tour I loved going to eat a very rich local food and full of flavors that you do not find elsewhere, I was really amazed at this experience.

I didn’t expect to see enough macaws in the same place and in their natural habitat, that’s what’s important, plus we found many other types of birds, plant types, insects... it was very rewarding. Well worth the effort of the walk through the sanctuary, bring a good camera with a good zoom is my advice.

I went on this tour accompanied by my brother it was an experience that I completely recommend as in addition to generating knowledge it is an extremely comfortable place in the establishment offered us different things to enjoy 100% the experience and keep the facilities clean for macaws that incidentally have quite a variety of species and the information they offer is very complete and understandable
