Pitillal was my last tour, with Joana, after spending much of my vacation eating my way around Vallarta. I'd signed up for six tours in nine days, so by this point I'd tried quite a few of their outings. I enjoyed finishing with Joana. As a woman traveling alone, these tours were a comfortable way to go out and do something without needing someone to come with me. I felt at ease on all of them. This was my October 24 outing, after the downtown food tours and both cocktail tours earlier in the week.

We had been wanting to try this tour for some time; this was our fourth tour with Vallarta Food Tours and every tour has been fantastic. Joana did an excellent job on the tour, even stopping in stores beyond the food stops. She did a great job, highly recommend her as a guide.
Amazing experience with our local guide, Al!!! Highly recommend. Just make sure to eat a light breakfast as suggested so you can fully enjoy all of the delicious food 😊
We enjoyed this tour because it allowed us to see a different part of PV. Joana was a great guide. She was accommodating and not only provided an explanation at every stop on the tour but along the walk as well. She had a great sense of humour as well. We also enjoyed meeting and getting to know a little about our fellow foodie. Our one gripe was the unusual start to the tour being the churro stand. It was an odd choice to start because it was a sweet taste. We thought that a savoury stop would have been better. And, we both found that our churros were browned too much but raw in the middle.
Our tour (food) guide Joana was awesome. She is such a wonderful person. Our tour consisted of my wife and I and we ate at about 7-8 places. Each one was sooooo good and the restaurant staff was inviting. We have now done this tour four times and each time we try several new restaurants and food items. Would definitely do this same tour again.
We really enjoyed this tour. Miel was fantastic.
Outstanding food tour of the non-touristy Pitillal area of Puerto Vallarta. Joana was an excellent guide and the food from fresh churros, to tacos, to ceviche to homemade tamales, to homemade popsicles was delicious. Highly recommend this tour.
Great experience and Joanna was amazing
Joanna was fantastic, guiding our group to explore some authentic food spots in Puerto Vallarta. The connections to historic and delicious restaurants made the tour super enjoyable and easy for us!
What a great tour! Starting with fresh Churros made by a long time street vendor and ending with a popsicle. Our guide Joanna was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the food, the people and the town, sharing lots of Pitillal's history with us. Highly recommend and we will be back to enjoy more tours. As previously stated, go hungry!!!
We had a most interesting food tour, eating our way through 7 stops in the neighborhood of Pitillal. We were full by the end, not only of tasty food, but of interesting stories told by our congenial guide, who lives locally.
My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time with Al, our tour guide, during this food tour. Al was very knowledgeable and friendly and the food we tried at every stop was so delicious. We were completely stuffed by the end of it. I’d definitely recommend this food tour to anyone who wants to taste authentic Mexican food.
Met our tour guide, Joana, promptly and then we headed off on a tour of this unique barrio. Joana did a wonderful job of explaining the history of the area, about the culture and the different foods we sampled. She was very knowledgeable and excited to introduce us to El Pitallal. We plan on returning another day to explore further and try other restaurants. Thank you Joana. PS we felt very safe taking the bus from the Hotel area and also walking around the neighborhood. People are friendly.
Excellent tour guide, fantastic food, everyone so friendly! Joana was so knowledgeable about the area, history and customs of Pitillal. She shared a little of her personal life and we left feeling like we were parting with a beloved relative. Food was excellent in every location. Can’t wait to try another of the Vallarta Food Tours. This was our second one and was even better than the first.
Great guide and great food. All locations were very good and informative. We all thought our guide did a fantastic job
Fun time Not too much walking Lots of interesting information Easy to understand Go hungry food was good and plentiful z
Lovely tour with a variety of delicious authentic cuisine and history/context/stories. Our guide made it extra special for our 7 year old by arranging for her to make a tamale.
Food Tour: If you want to experience daily life and the best local restaurants in Pitillal, then sign up for a tour with Alcibiades Orozco. He is a very kind and knowledgeable Mexican man. He took us on a comfortable walking tour through this small quaint town and even stopped at a pottery shop so we could buy souvenirs. His tour was very educational! We got to see a tortilla factory and saw 4-5,000 tamales being made at another business. You could tell that the businesses respected him and appreciated that we patronized them. The food stops were delicious and even included a churro and popsicle for desserts. We got to eat pork, goat, seafood, and beef tortillas. This extensive tour was a first for us in many ways. It was so enjoyable that we wouldn’t even mind going one more time not only to eat, but to see Alcibiades Orozco again.
Our guide was Alcibiades. He was easily spotted at our meet up spot with his lanyard on and was keeping an eye out for us which was very helpful. We started the tour with a quick introduction and a history lesson and then we were off. He went above and beyond on our tour and we ended up going over the time just enjoying each other's company. He made sure we were all having the best time and we were:) I would recommend a tour with him.
We loved our Taste of Pitallal tour with Al. We tasted some incredible food - birria, carnitas, ceviche, fish tacos, tamales plus churros and paletas! We especially loved the tortilleria and the church. Al was knowledgeable not only about the neighborhood but also the food and the families that made it. one of our fav food tours ever! Would recommend for families, couples or anyone!
Miel did a great job and is a wealth of Mexican food history and culture. LOTS of food on this tour! Great way to see a vibrant neighborhood few tourists get to visit.
Pitillal is a neighborhood that is a part of the city where tourists rarely get to see. Our guide Sylvia was able to fill our tour with different stops along the way besides the eateries we went to and she had stories and answers for our questions. It was a wonderful experience.
Great food and the tour was away from the tourist area so you get to enjoy the experience with the locals. Joann did a wonderful job explaining what foods we were having along with the history.
If I could give more than five stars, I would: maybe six or seven The restaurants were so good so local and so ready to serve us Joanna the guide was excellent Always ready to answer questions
Our guide Al was fantastic. We saw so much, got a nice sense of the neighborhood, and the food was amazing. Felt very lucky to have Al as our guide. Highly recommend.
tour guide joana was terrific. she was informative, friendly, and gave us a fulfilling experience tat we will tell our firends about
Loved that this tour was in a non touristy area. So much good food and history. Joana is a wonderful guide. This our second time on a tour with her. You won’t be disappointed.
Bernardo was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable about the Pitallal, Jalisco and surrounding area. Food was fantastic - we were stuffed. The best tamale we’ve ever had. It was a very authentic experience at local establishments. If you want to get away from tourist zones, this is a great way to experience local cuisine.
We enjoyed a wonderful tour with Joana. It was only my husband and I, so the tour was fun and personal. The food was delicious, and we learned so much about the history and culture of Pitillal. We would do this tour again.
Al was very knowledgeable and showed us great food! We also got to learn a lot of the history in this small town. Would highly recommend AL to anyone.
Met our guide Joana in the market square she spotted us right away with a huge smile and the first question out of her mouth was, “Any food aversions? Goat? Organs?” (Not your average icebreaker!) She promised us 7 stops, 6 tacos, 1 popsicle and off we went. Pitillal isn’t a tourist zone. It’s where the locals who work at the resorts actually live, and you can feel it. No glossy shops, no wristbands just real food, real people. We hit a roadside seafood cart, a tiny spice shop crammed with raw herbs, and then our first tacos with tortillas pressed fresh right in front of us. Joana said if tortillas aren’t made on the spot, locals won’t even bother eating there. Lesson learned. From there it was tacos, octopus, more tacos, more tortillas. By stop #4 I was waddling. Between stop 4 and 5, we had a sample of still cooking chicharoon, so good! Stop #5 brought a strawberry dessert tamale with a thick milk-based drink strange but so good. We finished with homemade paletas Kari grabbed a water base, I went creamy leche. It wasn’t just the food though. It was Joana. She loves what she does and it shows. Pitillal welcomed us in, fed us right, and gave us a taste of the Mexico we didn’t know we needed.
After taking the Pitillal Food Tour solo a couple of years ago and loving it, I couldn't not take my husband, daughter, and almost son-in-law on it on our most recent trip to Vallarta. Miel was our guide (she had also been my guide on the other tour) and was absolutely wonderful! She gave us so much insight to how things are done, why things are the way the are, and helpful hints to make our tastings even more delicious. I've been on a few different Vallarta Food Tour excursions, and this one is by far my favorite. I still dream about the carnitas and tamales!
What an amazing day! It was only my husband and I on the tour. Al, our guide, took us on a thoughtful and tasty adventure where we got to taste carne asada, carnitas, birria, tamales, and homemade ice cream. All were authentic and delicious. You can feel Al's passion for the community, and the food. As well as the businesses in this community. The small area we toured is not touristy, but that's the best part. We got to experience real food and real people. We even got to visit a beautiful Catholic Church where we saw a breathtakingly beautiful carving of Jesus that was carved out of a 1 ton piece of red cedar. We are so grateful to Al for sharing his passion and community with us!
Wish i could give this tour more than 5 stars! Miel is an encyclopedia of knowledge about Mexican food -- its origins, its varieties and its ingredients. I've lived here more than 6 years and am an semi-pro food historian myself, but I learned a lot from our gracious and enthusiastic tour guide. Excellent value, delicious and fascinating way to spend a few hours of your time!
Our tour was amazing and our tour was fantastic. You could tell she was proud of her culture and her home. The walk was so interesting and educational. The places she took us to were wonderful. The staff of each place were kind, friendly, accommodating and smiling. The food at each place was delicious. We try to take a food tour where ever we go. We travel a lot in and out of the country and we have had amazing tours everywhere. I would recommend this tour to anyone one that wants to leave the resort areas and get a real taste of Mexico. Our tour guide was nice enough to give us the names and a map to the places we visited. Since we will be back it was a plus for us.
This tour was exceptional. Al, our tour guide, was so pleasant and informative. I would highly recommend the tour anyone. Just make sure you come hungry because you eat a lot of food!!!!
Joana was a wonderful guide! She helped us navigate the busy streets of Pitillal and was very knowledgeable and kind. We loved her stories and her genuine love for the cuisine and neighborhood. Definitely recommend this tour if you’re interested in authentic food and a fun walking journey. Pitillal is a great way to get away from the tourism parts of town and experience true Mexican culture.
What a great fun little tour, Joanna met us at the square across from the church like we were told. And in a somewhat of a figure eight showed us where all the locals by there masa for the tortillas where they like to go for carnitas in the morning, where to find the best shrimp tostada in the neighborhood. Joanna really gave us the inside scoop on how these families run their businesses. The tamale House was probably my favorite. It's just so heartwarming to see a family work together to make something happen.
What a great way to spend a morning! Joana was a fabulous tour guide and showed us such a unique side of the food in Pitillal. We loved getting away from the more touristy side of Vallarta to experience a more local area. Would 100% recommend this tour to anyone coming to PV!!
Joann was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun as she led the group on the tasting food tour. She quickly introduced us to other group members, explained our route, and we were on our way! We had 6 main stops and several quick stops and felt we were really getting the local feel while indulging in the best of the best foods in Mexico.
This food tour was amazing! Not only did we get to try many different, local, and tasty foods, all local and authentic, but we also got to experience a bit of true Mexico. We did a few tours during this trip and this was by far the best one. Our guide, Joanna, was absolutely awesome and shared a lot of information, not only about the food we tried, the families who make it, but also about Pitillal, it's people, in general, customs, traditions, and comparisons to how we (Canadians) live. We loved this tour and are certainly planning to try another food tour with this company the next time we are in Puerto Vallarta. Thanks, Vallarta Food Tours and Joanna, for an awesome experience!
Joana led a great tour. We ate delicious food while learning about the customs and history of the area. The food was delicious. The walking was easy to do. We had a great time.
Gio was amazing. Very knowledgeable of not just the food but the culture of Puerto Vallarta and Mexico! Would highly recommend l.
The best trip ever and our tour guide Joana was so friendly and showed us even her favorite spots. Will use this company in a heartbeat on our next trip to puerta vallarta. The and drinks amazing
Joana was our guide. She was very pleasant, helpful and very informative. We visited six places and the food was amazing. Would highly recommend this tour.
Al was very helpful and informative. Each food stop was as delicious as the next. One note I have is that the tortelleria was idle at the moment so we didn't actually get to see tortillas being made, which was a bit disappointing. Other than that the tour was excellent.
Al was a great tour guide and took us on a wonderful tasty tour around Pitillal. So many great food flavors! We loved being able to taste the wonderful dishes!
Al was a wonderful host, very friendly and informative. It was nice to see a different side of Puerto Vallarta on this trip to Pitillal. Good variety of food, all is which was delicious!
This was a great food tour of the local cuisine of Puerto Vallarta. Our guide, Joana, was amazing and took us to 6 places within a 2 block radius where we sampled some of the best Mexican food we’ve ever had on this trip. We will definitely do this tour again when in the area.
This was my second tour with the company, I did the bike tour on a previous visit which was also very good. We enjoyed this experience of trying some restaurants in Pitillal which is a neighborhood outside of the tourist area. Our guide Al was friendly and helpful.
