By early March many of the penguins are molting and many must have started leaving so no big colony. Long bus ride but good tour leader Tina.

Itinerary
We will visit the largest reserve of Magellan Penguins in South America. Once at destination, an entrance fee must be paid, where we also find an interesting Interpretation Center, dedicated to the different stages of the Penguin life cycle and its natural environment. At this point the most exciting part of the route begins, being able to walk among penguins, along a 1,5-kilometer path that begins in the Patagonian steppe field until you reach the coast area where the penguins arrive from the sea to the continent to recondition its nests every year and fulfill its cycle of breeding and breeding of its pigeons. You can see the vastness of the colony, full of nests everywhere. It is a unique experience in the world that few are lucky to live. It is worth mentioning that the penguins cohabit quietly with small rodents, the cuisines, and receive the sporadic visit of guanacos and choiques. Once the tour of the reservation is finished, we begin the return to the city.

What made this excursion so special was our guide, Mariana. She was one of the best guides I have ever had on a shore excursion and I have done over 50 cruises! She engaged us the entire way (a 2 ½ hour trip) with information on the area and on Punta Tomba. Once you get to Punta Tomba you are on your own to wander the area. The lunch was excellent. On the way home she was telling us about the cherries that grow in the region. She was able to stop at a local stand and buy some for the bus! Highly recommend the trip.
Tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, informative and answered all our questions. She made the long trip to apunta Tombo very interesting. The bus was VERY uncomfortable. The seat in front of me was broken and I had little space. Men had to stretch their feet down the aisle as even working seats were way too close. In spite of the discomfort she managed to make it fun and interesting! Box lunch was good and they offered water when first entering the bus.
Long trip but absolutely worth it!! And the end of the trail on the bay is strenuous but certainly well worth it!!
This was great. We were fortunate that the weather was great, the many, many penguins were out and about. We also saw many guanaco, Rhea and flamingos. Our guide and driver were great. The lunch was good and we even had a short drive through town as we made good time returning. Highly recommend
Roy was a very knowledgeable guide. He gave us the history of the area, explained where we were going and took great care of us. The experience was great.
This is a fantastic trip if you want to see penguins! We also saw wild llamas roaming around with the penguins. We had a great day - time at the reserve flew by due to all there is to see. Highly recommend this tour.
This fantastic tour should not be missed . What an experience !!! A most amenable guide with so much knowledge and great English made the trip truly memorable. We were up close to the penguins with plenty if time to observe them in their natural environment .
Although the distance is a bit far, I saw many penguins and baby penguins! It's a pity that there is no extra time to visit the city
Be prepared to walk along a boardwalk to see the penguins. Bus ride is long but our guide shared a lot of the area’s history. Box lunch was fare but filling.
Our guide Mariana was fantastic. She was very patient in explaining the area to us and keeping us informed of what is to happen. But the bus they used is not comfortable at all. The 6 hour total bus ride that includes an hour of rough gravel road just gave us lower back pains and the need to stand up to ease the pain at our bottoms. Plus the provided packed lunch definitely can use some improvement.
Found our contact immediately at pier. Van was comfortable. Our guide was excellent and very friendly. Very pleased with the tour.
Tour was as described. It is a long ride but our guide did a great job sharing interesting information along the way. We saw a lot of penguins, walking right along with them by their homes.
Many beautiful penguins in their natural environment. Also, a brief history lesson of the local area.
Really fun trek beating the cruise ships to the penguins!! We loved having all of the free time to spend on the walk. I wondered if some guests would make it as some of the walk was a bit steep. Though, I loved learning more about the penguins on the way to see them, and appreciate them in their locale.
The drive is a little long . The box lunch was ok. We could hardly understand the guide as the speakers kept making noises and she was not clear. Talking with her one on one was better. Lots of penguins, beautiful walk and nice weather. Prices in the shops were exaggerated! !
The tour company communicated with us prior to the tour letting us know what to expect and how to contact them, if necessary. They were visible at the end of the pier when we disembarked and we got started on our tour right away. Our guide was friendly and informative. The reserve is beautiful, and the opportunity to see so many penguins made the long drive well worth it!
I cannot speak highly enough about the communications from this company. . First class! Through no fault of anyone, we did not dock until 3/4 hours after our supposed arrival time due to gale force winds and original approach was aborted at last minute. As our tour was a full day tour it could not proceed. Once the ship eventually docked, we were not only offered alternative shortened tours around town etc we were informed in writing that our original tour fee would be refunded. This is a wonderful gesture and greatly appreciated as the tour company would have had some expenses due to the last minute change. We were enormously disappointed not to have seen the penguins. .perhaps next time when we would most certainly book this tour with this company. Thank you so much for your professionalism, your patience and the communications. . We wish you well.
Seeing penguins in their natural environment. Well worth the drive time and money. Arrangements and guide were excellent.
The port was closed due to weather condition that day. We only found out that same morning when we were supposed to dock. Both the local operator and Viator responded quickly to my WhatsApp , really within seconds, telling me not to worry. It will be 100% refunded. Even though I didn't get to see the Magellanic penquins but their service truly impressed me. I am always skeptical in booking anything outside from cruise ship. But now I know they are reliable and of course, of a great better price. Will definitely book from them for future cruises and other land tour.
It was nice to start the trip early in the morning. We were the first group of visitors to reach Punta Tombo that day. It was great when the light was good, the beach less crowded, and penguins more active. We still were able to see plenty of penguins in the end of March, which was a major concern for us and even the tour guide. The bus had plenty of leg room and the seat was comfortable, which was important for a 2.5 hour ride. The lunch box had good portion size and the taste was Ok.
Our tour guide Pitu and the driver René were very knowledgeable. Pitu really knows everything about penguins and other animal in the area. Highly recommended.
The highlight for me was the expectation of seeing lots of penguins up close. This was a long walk along a boardwalk to see the penguins at a distance. There were scattered penguins along the way that were close up, and we were able to see the nests with small babies nestled inside.
Tour guide was excellent, very knowledgeable. She make the long trip very fun and interested due to her long experience with wildlife in Puerto Madryn
Long ride, but we did not feel it at all! Were picked up at the end of the pier. All on time. Great excursion 1/2 of the price of the same tour the cruise ship offers. Lots of penguins really really close by!!! Highly recommend! Thanks guys!!
the Guide was very good, but it was a 2.5hrs drive there and back and although there were a couple of hundred penguins on the beach and 20 or so dotted along the walk to the beach, it was too far and too expensive.
Our tour guide (Mariana?) was well prepared, knowledgeable and informative. Alex from the tour operator actually texted me as soon as I booked the tour and we corresponded of every changes in our cruise schedule. We saw and took pictures of cute Magellanic penguins in their rookeries. Highly recommended tour!
Mariana was a wonderful guide. She explained about her country, had visual aids and was very open to questions. She gave very good instructions in clear English and was easy to understand. The walk to see the penguins was much further than anticipated and really needs to be explained in detail. It is not wheelchair / walker friendly. The boardwalk is uneven and there are areas that are quite uneven.
This was a very well organized tour, they were efficient and great in communicating thru Whatsapp on the time and meeting place. This tour started early and we got there before all the big buses showed up. Our tour guide Marcela was very good and very enthusiastic, armed with a wealth of information about the wild animals in the area. She was great in spotting and pointing out animals we encountered. We saw an armadillo!! She was a bit hard to understand sometimes, but she more than make up this deficiency with all the pluses. We did come late for this tour (March), all the penguin chicks were gone. U need to come earlier, January or February.
Great communication from the tour company before we arrived. Knew exactly where to meet them and how to find them. Tour was exactly as described and we were impressed with the guides local knowledge. Great information about the culture and Heritage of local people. Saw penguins at end of the season so not millions but still enough to be impressed. Would recommend this tour company!
March 2024 Tour was ok, but very disappointed as to the amount of penguins we saw! Expected to see the largest colony in the world! If this is not the time of year then this tour should not be sold!
As described, we saw penguins, Guanacos, sheep, horses, flamingos, and penguins. Lunch was enough for 2 people. Driver and guide were good. Wish they filled in some of the long driving time with asking people where they were from or with a silly game.
Alex organized our tour booking very nicely. Our cruise was late, they waited at the port. Our guide Mariana is very nice, very knowledgeable, gave us a lot of information about the area and wildlife. We didn’t see a lot of penguins, only some juveniles.
Very good tour; would highly recommend. Beautiful landscape at Punta Tombo. Saw LOTS of penguins! They just walk right over the boardwalk in front of you. Lunch was included and they were accommodating when the cruise ship docking times changed a bit.
I booked this tour because it is “wheelchair accessible.” That is true, but be advised you need a chair that can handle gravel & rock. There is a wooden boardwalk but there are some parts that are rock. My chair was able to handle it. Hugo (guide) & Rene (driver) were very friendly, helpful, & knowledgeable about the area & wildlife we would see. It was so cool to see penguins just walk right up to the path & then keep on going to their nests. You will see penguins from the beginning of the boardwalk, too.
This was a great day out in the Argentinian Patagonia. It was a long 2 1/2 hour drive to Punta Tombo but through some interesting countryside. It allowed us to appreciate the extent and diversity of this beautiful country. Once at Punta Tombo there was a long walk to reach the penguin colony. Once there we saw at close quarters hundreds of Maguellan penguins in their own environment and there were lots of good photo opportunities. Overall a good day out. Our guide was very informative and provided us with lots of information and anecdotes not only on the wild life and natural environment but also on the history and development of the area and its inhabitants.
excellent tour operator. lots of fun! good for walker and even not so mobile people. Do what you can. Penguins are plentiful. Scenery is interesting
We were treated so well on this tour. The bus for this excursion was easy to spot at the pier. Our guide (I think his name was Hugo) made sure we were comfortable and even ordered another bus with better air conditioning. We stopped in Trelew to see the dinosaur sculpture. We saw many guanacos along the way. He had good English and gave us good insight into the animals we saw, as well as the country. We were given a generous lunch that we ate on the bus on the way back. We were totally amazed at the thousands of Magellanic penguins that we saw at this preserve. You definitely walked among them. We respected their right for us to not get closer than one meter. Their nests were among the scrub brush. There were approximately 100,000 penguins there. We learned so much and were definitely back to our ship with time to spare. This tour is not to be missed!
It was great to see the penguins and the guanacos in their environment. It was VERY windy! It is a long ride and I was a little worried about getting back to the ship, but we made it! Glad we did this.
Walking on the beach to experience the wildlife abd beautiful scenery: Magellanic Penguins, Rhea birds, GuaNacogdoches. Our guide was very knowledgeable (Diana), driver abd minivan comfort were excellent.
Tour director pushed my Wife in a Wheelchair for the entire visit that we booked from Celebrity Eclipse for the 7am Tour. Many thanks to a very helpfull Lady whose name i cannot remember.
Waira Travel rep met us at the end of the pier and we were handed off to one of their travel companies, Animal Tours. The tour guide, Hugo, was excellent! He gave us lots of information about Argentina and Punta Tumbo. He had a thorough knowledge of his country and puerto Madryn. The Magellan penguins were in the thousands! All around us and among us. We would absolutely do this tour again!
This tour was outstanding from start to finish!!!! Text message the day before, clean bus when the air conditioning wasn't as cool as the guide felt it should be he call for another bus to come pick us up. He even had sun screen for us that had forgotten! How’s that for service? He went on the path with us making sure everyone was safe. We ended with a very nice lunch, that was more than most of us could eat. Leftover were saved for a community center! Fantastic!
The guide was waiting for us when we arrived at the port. The driving was very long, but not too boring. The park is huge with thousands of We penguins. The English guide was great, gave us a lot information. But the speaker on the bus was very low volume we hardly heard her voice
Strongly recommended this trip and Alex- his good prompt service. Beautiful view and many many penguins. Lunch box is so so - but no complaints. In such a short registration, the experience is more than we expected.
Amazing trip with Ali. The penguin colony was a special part of our trip. Alex texted on the morning of our trip to bring a jacket due to wind that was very helpful. Nice van and fantastic driver. Highly recommend their company
This was a tour from a cruise. We received good instructions where to meet tour guide. Tour guide Nico was excellent and very informative. The visit to the penguin colony was excellent. We had enough time to walk the whole route. We got there early morning so wasn’t too busy but was getting very busy when we left at lunch time. Tour got us back in time for ship leaving.
We had a wonderful guide who went out of his way to assist us with my dad who has mobility issues, so that he could see as many penguins as possible. Thank you Ugo! The drive way long (2.5 hours to get there) and I’d recommend if you’re pressed for time, that when you get to Punta Tombo, walk all the way to the end of the trail (and to the beach) directly, then make your way back. The penguins on the beach at the end are well the effort of walking the full length of the trail. It was a scorcher (Feb 2) so bring a hat and wear sunscreen
Our tour guide was very enthusiastic about what he does. Niko was happy to share info about his country that he loves. Our only thing negative was the box lunch. Wasn’t terrible but could have been a little better. We enjoyed our penguins encounters. Lots of penguins and very close to us.
Best organization ever !!! From the moment you book with them, they'll send us great direction so we could easyly find the bus tour at the pier from our Cruise ship. Then, a few days before our tour, again they send us more detail on where the meeting point is and that they will have a sign with our name on waiting for us. On the excursion day, we found the meeting point easily and they where waiting for us with a flag and our name on a board; so this is so important when you get out from the cruise ship and make your tour starts easily and know where you are going. On the bus, the ride was awesome, a lot of info about the place and very friendly guide. Totally worth the 2 hours+ road to see this AMAZING site with so many penguinsssss !!!! Recommand this tour and Waira Travel all the way !!
