The city walls of Avignon, an impressive fortress-like structure, encircle the heart of this historic town, offering a glimpse into its past as a powerful medieval city. Built in the 14th century during the time when Avignon was the seat of the Papacy, the walls stretch over 4.3 kilometers and are punctuated by 39 watchtowers and seven gates. These fortifications were designed to protect the papal residence and its inhabitants. Today, visitors can walk along sections of the walls for stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside, experiencing firsthand the strength and grandeur of Avignon's medieval defenses.
Musée Lapidaire, located in Avignon, is a treasure trove of ancient art and archaeology. Housed in a former 17th-century Jesuit church, the museum's stark architectural beauty complements its collection of classical antiquities. The exhibits include Roman sculptures, Greek and Egyptian artifacts, and intricate mosaics, offering a fascinating window into the ancient Mediterranean world. The museum’s serene and contemplative atmosphere allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history and artistry of these ancient civilizations, making it a hidden gem for lovers of archaeology and history.
The Temple Saint-Martial in Avignon is a beautiful example of Protestant architecture in a city steeped in Catholic history. Built in the 19th century, it stands as a quiet and serene place of worship, offering a contrast to the more grandiose churches in the region. Nestled in the heart of the city, it is a peaceful spot for reflection and a rare gem for those interested in Avignon's religious diversity.
The Church of the Célestins in Avignon is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture, nestled in the heart of the city. Located near the city center, it was once the hub of the textile industry, where dyers would work with vivid colors to dye fabrics. Today, the street retains its old-world charm, with its cobbled paths, charming watermills, and the rhythmic sound of the Sorgue River running alongside. The atmosphere is tranquil yet vibrant, making it a delightful place to wander, with its blend of history, heritage, and beauty. The street offers a unique glimpse into Avignon's medieval past, making it a perfect spot for history lovers and photographers alike.
The Avignon Synagogue, located in the heart of the city, is a quiet yet significant landmark that reflects the Jewish heritage of Avignon. Built in the 19th century, it stands as a testament to the rich history of the Jewish community in the region. The synagogue’s simple yet elegant architecture is a stark contrast to some of the more ornate religious structures in Avignon, but its serene interior exudes a sense of peace and spirituality. While modest in design, the Avignon Synagogue remains a vital part of the city’s cultural and religious tapestry, offering a quiet space for reflection and connection to the past.
The Saint-Pierre Basilica in Avignon is a striking blend of Gothic architecture and spiritual history. Built in the 14th century, it was originally part of a larger monastery complex. Dominating the square is the clock tower, which gives the place its name, adding to the timeless atmosphere of the area. The square is a lively hub, especially in the evenings, when locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy the charm of Avignon, making it a perfect spot to relax and people-watch.
The Opéra Grand Avignon is a stunning architectural gem in the heart of the city, offering both a rich cultural history and a vibrant venue for performances. The Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) in Avignon is a monumental symbol of medieval power and religious history. The palace’s imposing stone walls and vast halls evoke the opulence and authority of the papacy at the time. Visitors can explore its grand chambers, chapels, and courtyards, as well as admire frescoes and exhibits detailing the papal era. The Palais des Papes offers a deep dive into both the architectural grandeur and political significance of this period in history, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Avignon.
The Avignon Cathedral, or Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms, is a striking example of Romanesque architecture located right next to the Palais des Papes. Dating back to the 12th century, this cathedral features a simple yet profound design, with thick stone walls and an impressive bell tower crowned by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary. It's an ideal place for a leisurely stroll or to simply enjoy the stunning vistas and quiet atmosphere amidst the hustle of Avignon.
The Pont Saint-Bénézet, or Avignon Bridge, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Avignon, known worldwide thanks to the famous song Sur le Pont d’Avignon. Originally built in the 12th century, this bridge once spanned the Rhône River, connecting the town to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Today, only four of its original 22 arches remain, but its historical significance and picturesque setting make it a must-visit. The bridge offers stunning views of the city, the Palais des Papes, and the river, making it an ideal spot for both history lovers and photographers.

Fantastic and thorough tour of Avignon. Helped us discover things about Avignon that we would never have learned without significant reading time or a much longer stay than the 2 days we had. Great overview of the city and helped us discover a great museum that we likely wouldn’t have found on our own. The only “glitch” was that (as stated in the description) if you were surrounded by thick high walls the blue dot that showed where you were on the downloaded map would disappear. Not a problem if you had been paying
My husband and I were in Avignon for just a day. This was defy the way to go. Informative talks at each stop about the history and each place as it is now. We even happened upon (due to the audio tour) a free museum with Egyptian and Greco-Roman antiquities. Fantastic! We did it at our own pace which is great with any medical issues or age related issues. I highly recommend this!
I loved this tour. It was nice to be able to do at my own pace and the map was easy to follow. Was also able to see so much in such a short time
Good information about Avignon. But navigating from location to location is a bit tough. The app translated the monuments to english but Google maps still had them in french so when we were lost it was hard to figure out where to go next.
Excellent- can do at own pace- in any order-would be helpful if street names were included as directions not that clear- commentary excellent.
We really enjoyed having the ability to stop and start the audio tour over several days. The photos that came with each stop on the tour helped us make sure we were in the correct place.
A highly informative audio guide, which is strongly recommended. The walk could be taken at our own pace, with there was a welcome break on this very chilly day at the wonderful market at the half-way point of the tour.
The guide is excellently narrated, with a warm voice and a perfect pace for exploring the city without rushing. I really enjoyed how the narration transports you to the time when Avignon was the center of papal power, yet it never feels heavy: everything is told in a very engaging and approachable way. In addition, the app’s map is super accurate, so I could easily follow the route and listen to each story right when I arrived at each spot.
Great tour! We enjoyed it over two days. Was good to be able to go at our own pace. Excellent way to explore the extensive city.
A good audio guide with lots of useful information about Avignon. The city is very beautiful. Thanks for the great walking tour.
You need to use data to download the Touringfree app and then the Avignon tour wouldn’t download without Wi-Fi. No real directions of how to get to each stop. Tried Google maps and still didn’t see what we were supposed to. We ended after the 6th stop.
Didn’t work not sure if it was me or the app but I could get the commentary but the map didn’t work so I had no idea where I had to go. Not what I was expecting for the price
Wonderful guide waking your through old city of Avignon, fun and very informative. Could go at our own pace.Highly recommend this tour.
The audio guide is well-structured and guides you throughout Avignon, explaining every corner of the city very well. The only downside is that your location in the app does not update in real-time, and sometimes it is difficult to understand where you are in relation to the activity you are visiting.
Very interesting application. I rediscovered the city of Avignon differently. I highly recommend it.
A very practical way to get to know the city and the main attractions, to a rite of your own! With stops wherever and continue with the guide!
