Beautiful suite in a great location, but pulled down by management choices and breakfast Pros: Location, Quiet, Air Conditioning, Reception Team, Helpful Bar Waiter Cons: Poor Bar Selection, Disappointing Breakfast, Closed Restaurant, Bathroom Usability We stayed in a suite at Hôtel d’Europe in August 2026. While Avignon was easily our favourite stop on our journey across France, the hotel left us with mixed feelings for the price point (£700+/night). What We Loved: The Suite & Comfort: Beautiful, remarkably quiet suite with a fantastic private outside sunbathing area. Air Conditioning: Flawless. Both the suite and corridors were fantastically air-conditioned, which was an absolute lifesaver in the August heat. Front Desk & Bar Staff: Reception staff were genuinely warm, friendly, and welcoming throughout our stay. A special mention and thank you to the waiter in the bar, who recommended a fantastic local restaurant for us to eat at—his recommendation was spot on. Where It Fell Short: Bathroom Usability: The bathroom was clearly recently refurbished, but basic functional fittings were missing—no toilet roll holder, no hooks for towels/dressing gowns, and no shelf for toiletries in the shower. Disappointing Breakfast: For £700+ a night, breakfast was well below standard. The hot offerings were limited to dry, grey scrambled eggs and greasy bacon. If cooked-to-order options (like omelettes or eggs Benedict) were available, there was no menu or signage on tables to let non-French speakers know. Poor Bar Menu: Being in the heart of France, having only a couple of bottles of wine listed on the bar menu feels like a major missed sales opportunity. It could have been a perfect chance to showcase local regional wines and vitalise the space, but instead, it left the bar feeling completely underutilised. Michelin Restaurant Closed: We were disappointed to find their Michelin-recommended restaurant was completely closed during peak August season due to staff holidays. Closing flagship dining during the busiest month of the year feels like poor management planning. Atmosphere: While reception and our bar waiter were great, broader kitchen and serving staff seemed noticeably unhappy—less a critique of the team, and more a reflection of management and operational strain. Summary: Avignon has fantastic independent dining options nearby, and the suite itself is lovely, but between missing bathroom fixtures, poor breakfast execution, a sparse bar menu, and peak-season closures, it doesn't quite deliver full value for money. On the fence about whether we'd return.

Reviews
This rating is largely due to how badly the hotel meets the standards you would expect (and I’d hope they expect of themselves) as a ‘5 star hotel’. The hotel itself is in a beautiful building, however the room was very average, and the bathroom was extremely dated and in desperate need of an upgrade (a process that seems to have been underway for years based on other reviews). Basic amenities like WiFi is barely functional, and regularly drops out on the few occasions you can actually get it to connect - unacceptable in 2026. These issues are then compounded by the terrible service and complete apathy of the staff, who seem to approach any request as a burden, and generally seem like they don’t want to be there - I will note the exception to this was Patrick who was genuinely fantastic to deal with, and seemed to be working overdrive with many guests to try and carry the service standard by himself. When we arrived at the hotel and checked in we were told that breakfast was included with our booking. It’s the only reason we ate breakfast at the hotel, as other have noted it’s extremely basic and the lowest quality of any of the hotels we stayed at during our trip despite others being 3 or 4 star locations. On check out we were then charged for breakfast, and eventually only offered half of this back begrudgingly. My booking confirmation from the hotel (an actual invoice) showed I prepaid ~600 euros, but then I was told that’s not true and it’s just what their systems shows. I couldn’t go back through 6 months of charges on my phone to confirm at the time so just had to trust this, but again the main problem was the attitude of the staff who were dismissive and acted like this was my fault, as if I should have known that the payment invoice I received from them was just made up numbers? Perfectly summing up the overall staff experience was another couple who were trying to get some information on shipping some items home from the staff while I was checking out. They didn’t need the hotel to do anything, just genuinely needed a bit of local insight/information on how the process would work and who to reach out to and the staff couldn’t have been more dismissive, basically telling them they had no idea and they should just go find a post office (not even any details on location offered). This place provides 2-3 star service at 5 star prices, and expects you to be grateful to be in the historic building as if that alone is all they need to rely on.
A great building with severe room issues and a 50:50 ratio of good staff to thoroughly unhelpful and surly staff. Rooms are loud all night. Even the suite I was finally upgraded to had loud aircon noise from next door and a weird window through to the bathroom which in turn let in full light at daybreak from the bathroom window. Water not reliably hot in the morning. Breakfast substandard for 5*. Disappointed as should be so much better.
This place is like walking back into the 50s. It's a very old hotel surrounding a very old tree in a very old part of a very old city. The courtyard has some beautiful wisteria growing in it as well and it's wonderful. The HVAC is old. It's a whole building modal system, so it's in one mode in the summer and another in winter. So if you get a hot day or two at the wrong time, they won't swap the building over for you. Has a parking garage across the square that is very secure and location is perfect for exploring this great city.
We had an exceptional stay at Hotel d’Europe. The building itself is stunning, full of history and character, yet everything feels perfectly maintained and quietly luxurious. The service was outstanding, warm, professional, and very personal. The restaurant is an experience on its own – refined without being pretentious, and every dish beautifully balanced. Easily one of the best meals we had in France. A true classic in the heart of Avignon. Highly recommend.
