Itinerary
Meet your local guide directly at the cruise pavilion and begin your day with a quick, memorable stop at the iconic Big Fiddle. Standing a towering 60 feet tall on the downtown boardwalk, this solid-steel tribute honors the vibrant folk music and Celtic traditions that give Cape Breton its unique soul. Enjoy a brief stroll along the harbor front, snap a few photos with this massive landmark, and listen to the ambient fiddle music setting the mood for an unforgettable day of coastal sightseeing, local history, and scenic views.
Step back in time to the founding days of the Cape Breton colony with a guided stroll through Sydney’s historic North End. Along Charlotte Street, you’ll explore a trio of 18th-century landmarks that escaped the march of modernization. Marvel at St. George’s Anglican Church, the oldest building in the city, constructed in 1785 by British soldiers using stones salvaged from the ruins of the Fortress of Louisbourg. Just down the street, view Cossit House (built 1787), the island’s oldest surviving home where costumed interpreters bring early Loyalist colonial life to life, and the Jost House Museum (built 1786), which offers a peek into three centuries of evolving maritime history from its early merchant roots to a reconstructed Victorian apothecary. It's a captivating, easy-walking journey into the heart of early Canadian history.
Escape the bustle of the downtown core with a scenic stop at Wentworth Park, Sydney's premier urban oasis. Spanning 12 acres of beautifully manicured lawns, mature trees, and peaceful interconnected ponds, this historic green space offers a tranquil look at local life. Stroll along the accessible paved walkways, cross the picturesque stone bridges, and see the resident waterfowl that call the park home. If you're touring during the summer, you might even catch local musicians performing at the central outdoor bandshell. It’s a wonderful, relaxing interlude that showcases the natural charm and community spirit of Cape Breton.
Watch the landscape open up as we cruise past Little Bras d’Or, a historic waterside community where the open Atlantic Ocean forces its way into Cape Breton's massive inland sea. Admire the beautiful shoreline views and the narrow, fast-flowing marine channel that separates the mainland from Boularderie Island. As we cross the waterways, your guide will share the area's deep history—stretching back to the 1740s when early French settlers mined these very shores to supply coal to the Fortress of Louisbourg. It's a picturesque, story-filled introduction to the island's unique geography.
Grab your camera for a stop at one of the most photographed vantage points on the island. Looking down from the slopes of Kellys Mountain, you'll get a bird's-eye view of the iconic Seal Island Bridge spanning the emerald waters of the Great Bras d'Or channel. Learn how this massive 1961 through-arch engineering marvel transformed island travel, admire the dramatic contrast of the modern steel structure against the 500-million-year-old pink granite cliffs, and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
Treat your senses to one of the most spectacular panoramas in Atlantic Canada with a stop at the St. Anns Look-Off. Perched high on the rugged slopes of Kellys Mountain, this paved vantage point offers sweeping, bird's-eye views across the emerald waters of St. Anns Harbour, the narrow Englishtown channel, and the open Atlantic beyond. Marvel at the dramatic highland plateaus of Murray Mountain directly across the bay, snap your postcard-perfect photos, and listen as your guide shares stories of the early Scottish Gaelic pioneers who settled the vibrant shorelines spread out below you.
Break up your drive with a charming, traditional maritime experience aboard the Englishtown Ferry. This continuous 24-hour cable ferry pulls your vehicle smoothly across a narrow 250-meter ocean channel in just under three minutes, connecting Jersey Cove to historic Englishtown. As we glide across the fast-flowing tidal currents, step out of the vehicle to breathe in the salty sea air and admire the surrounding mountain scenery. Once ashore, your guide will point out the home and final resting place of Angus MacAskill, the legendary 19th-century "Cape Breton Giant."
Indulge your sweet tooth with a delightful stop at Cabotto Chocolates, an artisan confectionery and fine art gallery uniquely housed in a beautifully restored historic church. Step inside to the rich aroma of premium, small-batch Belgian chocolates being crafted right before your eyes. Peer through the chocolate kitchen window to watch live hand-tempering demonstrations, sample some of their signature Maritime treats like "Moose Munch," and browse a gorgeous collection of fine art, sketches, and custom sterling silver jewelry created by local Cape Breton artists. It’s the perfect, decadent break on our journey along the trail.
Treat your guests to a quintessential Cape Breton lunch at the widely acclaimed Clucking Hen Cafe & Bakery . Nestled directly along the rugged North Shore cliffs, this charming seasonal eatery is famous for its scratch-made comfort food. Indulge in a steaming bowl of traditional seafood chowder or a fresh lobster roll, and don't miss their legendary, massive homemade cinnamon buns. Grab a seat on the outdoor ocean-view deck to dine alongside the sounds of the Atlantic surf before hitting the road.
As we journey along the dramatic coastline, we’ll take advantage of a perfect roadside pull-off at Pathend Brook Lookout. Strategically positioned on the ocean-side of the highway, this hidden gem allows us to safely and seamlessly pause to admire the sweeping maritime scenery. Marvel at the dramatic contrast between the deep green highlands and the crashing ocean waves below, capture stunning landscape photos in the crisp coastal light, and learn a bit about the unique geography of the Wreck Cove region before we head further north.
Experience the grand majesty of Cape Breton's historic hospitality with a stop at the iconic Keltic Lodge resort grounds. Situated dramatically on the narrow Middle Head Peninsula, this world-renowned coastal destination offers unmatched panoramic views of the open Atlantic Ocean and the towering cliffs of Cape Smokey. Take a short stroll along the manicured grounds, snap gorgeous cliffside photos, and listen as your guide shares the fascinating history of this 1939 retreat. You’ll also see the sprawling fairways of the legendary Highlands Links, celebrated globally as a masterpiece of seaside golf design.
Experience one of Canada’s most extraordinary coastal landscapes at Ingonish Beach. This spectacular destination is famous for its unique geography, where a massive natural stone barrier separates the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean from a peaceful, warm freshwater lake. Enjoy ample time to stroll along the expansive golden sands, walk the cobblestone ridges, or take a gentle walk along the scenic Freshwater Lake trail. With full modern amenities on-site, it is the perfect, refreshing mid-day oasis to stretch your legs and soak in the magnificent mountain-meets-ocean scenery.
Experience the raw, untamed power of the North Atlantic with a stop at Green Cove. A short, fully accessible 200-meter wooden boardwalk carries you effortlessly from the highway out onto a dramatic rocky headland that is over 560 million years old. Stand safely on the edge of the continent as massive ocean swells crash violently against the rugged pink-granite shelves below. Feel the refreshing ocean mist, look for local shorebirds nesting in the sea-battered tuckamore trees, and keep your eyes on the horizon for surfacing whales. It’s a quick, high impact stop that showcases the wild coastal beauty of the highlands.
We’ll make an exciting stop at Destination Cape Smokey, the premier mountain adventure hub on the trail. Here, you have the fantastic optional opportunity to purchase a ticket on Atlantic Canada’s only 8-passenger gondola. The smooth, 3.5-minute ride takes you 1,000 feet up to the mountain peak, unlocking jaw-dropping, bird's-eye views of the vast Atlantic Ocean, the rugged coastline, and the surrounding highlands from expansive wooden viewing decks. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can relax for free at the beautiful base lodge, browse the local gift shop, or grab a refreshing beverage at the restaurant while waiting for the group.

Our experience with our travel agent was absolutely fantastic. They curated the perfect itinerary and ensured every detail was handled seamlessly. His local knowledge and personal guidance at each spot made our trip incredibly special and stress-free. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Beautiful scenery and friendly, knowledgeable guide. Only negative - VERY uncomfortable ride - 6 hours with 6 passengers in a minivan. Would recommend ask for type of vehicle if interested
The vehicle we were in was older, and in need of general maintenance. The ride was very uncomfortable, the check engine light was on, the check tire air pressure light was on intermittently, and the driver did not engage as much as we anticipated. We enjoyed the scenery, however, the ride was much too long. Can not recommend this particular company.
This trip never happened because all cruise ships couldn’t dock due to weather. However the tour company kept the money and won’t reimburse me even though they market to cruise passengers. Stay away!!
We had an excellent experience on the Cabot Trail excursion. The fall foliage was beautiful, and our guide, Jerry (Anglicized), was thoughtful and attentive. We could not have asked for a nicer day.
DO NOT USE IF ARRIVING ON A CRUISE SHIP. Due to weather, no ship made it into the harbor the day of our scheduled tour. I texted the company right away and asked if there was any chance of a refund as it was act of nature beyond our control that kept us the excursion. The ship refunded all bookings for that day. Yet I was told two days later that the tour company wouldn’t offer the same courtesy. Not even a partial refund was offered.
Tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, took us to some unscheduled sites and assured that we were back at the ship with time to spare.
Cabot trail is a must-see in the Port of Sydney. Stunning views. Raj was very knowledgeable and friendly. Liked the small group concept of the tour.
Cabot trail is lovely. However our guide was terrible and a horrible driver. We were all really glad when it was over.
Our driver was very nice. Traveled with another couple we didn’t know. She had to sit in the back of car . Very uncomfortable for three in the second row. Stops for merchandise which we don’t like. Recommendation for lunch stop was mediocre. We cut it short and it was still 6 hours.
It was very good trip as I appreciate the guide shows every beautiful spot.
Highly recommend! Great experience and excellent customer service.
We had an amazing day on the Cabot Trail. The views were incredible, and every stop was worth it. Our guide was friendly, patient, and gave us enough time to enjoy each location without feeling rushed. It was one of the best experiences of our Nova Scotia trip.
It was one of the beat and great tour with scenic view points in small city Sydney Nova Scotia tour guide was waiting at port it was very convenient to meet them and the tour was awesome organised with small group in a minivan
We had less than a day in port at Sydney NL. We chose Viator because reasonably priced option compared to ship excursion. I was pleased that this was a small group of 5 in a comfortable large SUV. As such the tour guide (KS) was very knowledgeable of the area, and flexible to our wishes. For example, stay a little longer or shorter at a stop. He was courteous to give us options as we were a small group. It’s lovely part of the world and would use this City Heart Tours again.
