Departure & Return
Departure Point
- Our meeting point is Seminářská 2, 110 00, Prague 1, directly next to the entrance of Hotel Aurus. You should be able to find us - we have a big bag and are dressed a bit differently than others :-)
Return
- If needed we are happy to help you to get back to the Old Town Square.
Itinerary
Meet your plague doctor outside the beautifully decorated House of the Golden Well, built in 1715 to celebrate the end of the plague. Make the acquaintance of Alexandr Schamsky, learn about the plague saints Sebastian and Rochus, and find out why three litres of garlic beer a day was considered solid medical advice.
Step into one of Prague's most atmospheric courtyards - just 20 metres from the tourist crowds but feeling like a different century entirely. Learn how the rich escaped the plague (they always do), how ordinary families were locked inside their own homes by armed night watchmen, and how Schamsky ended up becoming a doctor against all odds.
Get acquainted with the two types of plague - bubonic and pneumonic - including symptoms, survival rates and the surprisingly avocado-like nature of a bubo. Meet the plague doctor's costume up close, including the famous beaked mask and its rather pungent air filtration system.
Discover why the Jewish community of Prague fared significantly better during the plague - and what that tells us about hygiene, fresh water and the dangers of throwing garbage out of windows. Also a brief encounter with Kafka, who, like the plague, appears everywhere in Prague whether you want him to or not.
Pass by the oldest active hospital in Europe and meet another forgotten hero: Celestine Opitz, the surgeon who performed the first successful surgery under full anaesthesia in 1847. The patient woke up, everyone celebrated, and then the patient died. But still - progress. Learn about the rat flea, Yersinia Pestis, and receive your anti-plague pill.
End your journey at the serene 13th century convent where Prague's very first plague cases were reported. Learn about alternative medieval medicine, why lavender kept the fleas away, and what ultimately happened to Alexandr Schamsky. The tour closes with a group photo and a poem - part medieval, part metal band, entirely unforgettable.

This was a bucket list experience. Learnng about how the Black Death affected Czech Republic and several important historical figures was fantastic. David was exceptionally knowledgeable and down to earth, happy to answer any questions as well while walking to several key locations. If you are interested in the plague and how it affected Prague this is a must do tour. I want to add I'm a nurse and found David's knowledge and information to be really fascinating, he was able to go into the medical nature of the plague types and management strategies of the time. Medical professionals of any discipline would really enjoy this experience!
So interesting. Wish there were more niche tours like this one. If you're generally put off by tour guides in character, don't worry, it's not like one of those. It really is a storytelling experience, not gimmicky or corny at all. One of those tours that leaves you wanting to learn even more. Our tour guide was Oscar - super entertaining. 10/10 would recommend.
Learn about plague while strolling through Old Town areas. It’s an insightful tour topic that is not talked about on mainstream tours, but has shaped the city of Prague and other places throughout history. The tour is 1.5 hours at a nice walking pace — wear appropriate clothing for time of year and day.
My teenage daughter is currently studying the plague at school so when I saw this tour on Get Your Guide we definitely had to do it. Maria was an excellent guide, friendly funny and very knowledgeable. Took us to interesting places we would have probably just walked past without realising. Would definitely recommend even though I will never look at avocados in the same way x
Maria was fantastic! She was very knowledgeable and witty along with keeping the group excited about the tour. One of the best tour guides!
Maria was very informative and entertaining. Learned so much about the plague. Despite the chill, am so glad that we stuck with it.
I found this tour so fun, knowledgeable and interesting! Besides the fact they are dressing up IN character, the deliverance of the stories are simply fascinating. Would absolutely recommend a tour like this while in Czech.
Brilliant walking tour around Old Prague with our knowledgeable and funny guide, Maria. We learnt so much and had a great time.
We did the tour with Thomas and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thomas was personable, funny and full of knowledge about the plague and Prague history in general. We were looking for a short walking tour to help us recover from jet lag and this was perfect!
Maria was a fabulous tour guide. Her weaving on medieval history and the development of modern medicine was a great way to see another side of Pragues history. The tour was lighthearted and funny and a great way to spend an evening. I highly recommend the tour for people interested fun, unique storytelling.
Very fun, very informative and interactive tour by Thomas, 100% recommend.
What an amazing tour! Our guide David was a really fun storyteller and managed to keep us all invested during the entire tour - including the kids. You can really tell so much passion and work was put into this project. What the team does by bringing these forgotten or less known stories to the general public isn't just extremely interesting, it's also so so important for history preservation! If you have the chance and find the topic even slightly interesting, definitely book it, I can't recommend it enough! One of my favorite memories from my Prague trip for sure
This tour was absolutely amazing!! Aside from learning more about this interesting topic, we were able to pass by a lot of notable Prague landmarks right at sunset. It was such a beautiful evening stroll packed full of riveting trivia. Maria was super personable, engaging, and knowledgeable about the topic. She had a great sense of humor! We had a few kids on our tour, and she went out of her way to make them feel included, which I thought was so sweet. Maria is definitely one of the best tour guides I've ever had! She even let us take photos with her in her plague doctor costume at the end. I highly recommend booking this tour during your stay in Prague.
My friend and I booked this tour together to learn more about Prague and about the plague. Our tour guide Thomas was informative and funny, he did an amazing job!
Very informative. Smaller group and not too much walking. Great value. Maria was our guide and would recommend highly
Guide was very knowledgeable and made the subject matter fun. It was a very unique tour, learned a lot.
The tour was fascinating and our guide, Thomas, was very interesting and knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone going to Prague, if they're interested in the darker side of history.
Marie was enthusiastic, informative and engaging throughout our tour. She was very knowledgeable about the Plague, the history behind the causes and how the population dealt with the problem. Although the subject was about a sad time in history Marie kept the tour intriguing and fun with some props and group questions. This tour was a unique way to see some parts of Prague that might not be include on other tours. I definitely recommend it!
My ten year old and I really enjoyed this journey into the past. It was very enjoyable and Maria was a delightful guide, very friendly and fun. We can highly recommend this tour
Maria was excellent. We knew nothing about the plague but we left like experts. Maria took us to places off the normal tourist trail. Wonderful guide, very friendly and informative.
Spectacular tour! David was a wonderful tour guide and we learned so much of the history of Prague's infectious disease infestations. If you get a chance to join this tour, you won't regret it!
A fun and quirky experience! In a crowded meeting point where tours gather, it’s very easy to find. Look for the guy in a plague mask, holding a lantern. Thomas was such a good tour guide, who answered all questions with great knowledge! The fun mini quizzes he did throughout the tour were fun and helped to keep us engaged. He provided a welcoming and insightful atmosphere to the tour, and chatted with all members of our 6 strong group while we walked to our next tour stops. (Sorry about derailing the tour for a second with my love for pigeons!) The tour lasted the specified time, at the end of the tour, Thomas provided directions to help us back to the centre.
Very enjoyable. Our tour guide did a great job! I would recommend this for anyone interested in the history of Prague and the Black Death
The guide/performer was enthusiastic, entertaining, and attentive to audience needs. The tour provides a good picture for those interested in this period of "how it was."
Very interesting tour. I had learned a lot from David, I just checked online about the the flea, and I think the one you showed us is a male since it got claspers( if I remembered correctly) haha
Thomas the guide made the plague walking tour a memorable experience with his knowledge and humour. It was a great introduction to the old part of town.
Great evening to learn about the city of Prague during the Plague of 1713-15… tour guide was kind and engaging. Great experience
Our tour guide David was both knowledgeable, and entertaining. Would recommend to anyone, it has something for everyone!
Our Plague Doctor, David, did a fantastic job of explaining the impact of the plague, theories on it's origin and the medical science of the time. We visited various sites in the Old Town that were relevant to the plague. David did a great job of making it an interactive experience. I highly recommend this tour.
If you have any interest in history, public health, or medicine, this tour provides an experience that blends all of these areas against the backdrop of the city of Prague. Our “Plague Doctor” for the evening was Oskar who was extremely articulate and knowledgeable in conveying information with an occasional dash of humor. We learned so much and would highly recommend this your!
Thomas was an engaging tour guide. Kept our interest. Startling macabre facts. Perfect setting for the topic. Reasonable price. Group of 10.
Excellent guided tour for anyone wishing to learn more about Prague during the time of the Black Plague. Our guide, David, impressed us with his extensive knowledge of the medicine practiced at that time, as well as of Prague’s medieval history. His storytelling talent captured our attention from the very first anecdotes. In short, we highly recommend it! Eric & Mel from Québec.
Such a unique way to explore one of the most devastating diseases that affected mankind. David had very good knowledge about the history of the Plague and made the tour a very good learning experience. Go for it !
Really enjoyed the experience. Creepy in the best way, but also really interesting and fun. The stories were both spooky and funny, while also giving a lot of historical detail about the Black Death and old medical practices. Recommended!
Thank you for the amazing experience, Thomas! You created a great atmosphere, and I loved your witty humour! I recommend hanging out with the Plague Doctor of Prague, especially after dark.
Excellent tour, excellent guide: highly recommend. I had Plague Doctor Oscar and he was excellent. A must do when in Prague.
Fun and informative tour . Enjoyed the historic information. Would have preferred an additional stop to the time spent with individual introductions of group members
Superbly researched and delivered, this engagingly interactive tour was both informative and entertaining. Thank you, David, for time very well spent.
Interesting tour. Guide made it fun. He does need to freshen up his costume- it smells. Would recommend the tour! Perfect amount of walking especially at the end of a long day.
On our trip to Prague we took several walking tours (this one, the Communism walking tour, and an Underground walking tour). This one was by far the best: Interesting historical content throughout, a good story of a particular plague doctor was weaved through the tour, and the guide was knowledgeable and entertaining.
Interesting tour, had no idea what to expect, but my college aged daughter wanted to do it. The guide was well prepared and tour’s pace was a nice combination of informing and walking. If you’re curious about Prague during the Black Plague, try it. My family and I enjoyed it.
David was our tour guide and he was so knowledgeable and very good at presenting his material. He and his fellow tour guides have done a lot of research and have talked to bacteriologists and epidemics doctors to find out a lot of information. He was funny also. Very enjoyable
We take walking or riding tours in almost every place we visit and this was, hands down, one of the very best we’ve done. Extremely interesting and informative. Funny without being corny. Our teens enjoyed it a lot and it is suitable for almost all fitness levels. Would recommend to absolutely anyone traveling to Prague. David was wonderful!
This was a fantastic fascinating and entertaining tour. Óscar was a great guide. He was very welcoming to all the other travellers and explained exactly how horrible the plague was and told us so much about it around the world as well as in Prague. We went to some cool areas away from too many people. A great fun way to spend 90 mins and be entertained and also learn something. One of the best walking tours I’ve done in Prague and I’ve done loads.
We booked this tour tonight last minute. Our warm and cheerful guide, Thomas, gave us an amusing and lighthearted 90-minute jaunt around Old Town. We came away with some fun facts about human and bacterial life in Bohemia in the early 1700s.
Engaging and informative walking tour of the north of the Old Town. Our guide David presented a lot of information in an engaging way and we enjoyed his dry sense of humour. The walking is pretty gentle and there are lots of opportunities for photos. A good way to see some of the city and learn about its history.
Fabulous tour! Entertaining and learned a lot about a unique time in history. I would highly recommend this for anyone who works in the medical field or loves to learn about historical footnotes of a destination.
Great tour! Informative and fun at the same time with good storytelling that touches on different times throughout plague history. Also a neat way to see the city after dark. Would definitely recommend!
This was surprisingly fun and a really informative tour. Our Plague Dr, David really kept in character and added to the experience! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to learn about the Plague.
