Itinerary
Meet your guide in the heart of the Old Town – on a threshold of the Old Town Bridge Tower and sett of on a fascinating journey to the past. After you enjoy a panoramic view of the Prague Castle – the proud seat of Czech rulers and presidents - you learn that not far from it once stood the largest statue of Joseph Stalin in the world! Step by step your guide will cover all the major events.
Learn about what led the Czech nation from the grip of the Austrian monarchy to an independent Czechoslovak democratic state – one of the strongest economies of its time and also the last functioning democracy in Eastern and Central Europe after 1933. Find out about the suffering during the 2nd World War under the Nazi “Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia“ and about the Operation Anthropoid which was the only successful assassination of a senior Nazi leader during World War II. Reveal the methods and strategies of the communist regime, and the enduring influence of the USSR, as it seized power and transformed the formerly democratic state into a tough dictatorship where human life meant less than nothing.
Imagine the euphoria of Prague Spring followed by Soviet tanks invading Prague in 1968, shooting at the building of National Museum on Wenceslas Square. On the very same square we honour the memory of young students who burnt themselves alive in order to unite the nation against the common enemy in 1969. As the history rushed towards the 70’s and 80’s you can see its reflection in the streets you pass. Your guide will reveal the long and thorny past that led to the Velvet Revolution of 1989 – the ultimate victory of democracy after more than 40 years of communism. Hear the stories about Václav Havel, courageous students, brutal police forces and the clashes at Narodní třída. Your tour would not be complete without some humorous and obscure stories from the times of newly gained freedom.

Good overview of communism in Prague. Sometimes hard to hear but the guide was v knowledgeable The tour included some great street art which I loved.
Anna was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and compassionate about the history of Prague and this time period!
Our tour guide was fantastic, a trove of information and experience on the topic. You could feel his passion for the subject. We learned so much from him. If you are interested in WWII, the history of Czechoslovakia and its path out of communism, this is the tour for you.
Despite starting on a rainy day, our tour was a complete success from beginning to end thanks to our wonderful guide, Martin. He demonstrated an incredible depth of knowledge regarding Czech history during World War II and the communist era, sharing fascinating historical facts as we walked through the streets of Prague and visited various memorials. Martin was also kind enough to point out several other major landmarks that weren't included in the official itinerary but were located very close to where our tour ended. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an engaging and educational look into Prague's 20th-century history.
The tour was very intetesting and a great way to see important historical landmarks in the city. I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to know more about this period of history in Prague.
Forgive me for forgetting the guides name, but he was amazing. He was a student at the time of the velvet revolution, and took part in the demonstrations. The stories he told of hiding from the police and joining the resistance against the communist regime were so compelling and inspiring. If you’re able to walk 2 miles or so, this tour is amazing. If there’s a way for the guide to message me or respond to this, I would love to include your name if you happen to see this.
Martin was so knowledgeable and the entire tour was fascinating and insightful. He offered personal insights into life in Prague which were much appreciated and helped our understanding of life in Prague through the 20th century. Martin is much better than he thinks he is. We have done lots of walking tours and his was right up there at the top.
A lot of really interesting information about politics, history and culture sure to fascinate those interested in modern times. The walk is continuous but Anna kept the conversation pace to match. We saw places of significance and commemorative installations. Highly recommended
Tomas was a fantastic and engaging guide, 2 hours flew by and I learnt lots of interesting things that I suspect most visitors to Prague can easily miss. A must do and highly recommended, thanks Tomas!
We did this tour with Tomas last week. It was just the two of us on the tour and we got to spend about 2 1/2 hrs with Tomas. It was the best tour we have ever been on. Tomas is a very interesting, intelligent and articulate person. Tomas began by giving us a brief history of Czechia up to 1930's and WW2. While walking around Prague (and very quickly getting away from the very large tourist gatherings) Tomas delivered a really interesting history from WW2 to date, covering the end of the war, arrival of the Soviets, crushing of democracy and imposition of communism, prague spring in '68, brezhnez docterine of the 70s and the gradual unravelling communism and on to the present day. The tour was a fascinating blend of politics, history, his personal family backround and a real insight into life in Prague in the 70's onwards. Tomas was really engaging, a very nice bloke and we even found time to go for coffee, and later a beer (delicious!). I would highly recommend this tour. It was a definite highlight of our trip. Unique experience. Our guide had been a student demonstrator during the Velvet Revolution so we had a gripping, first-hand account of the events of 1989.
Wonderful! Exactly what I wanted. Guide was very knowledgeable and covered all of the important places and events. Thanks
Such an educational experience that really added an extra dimension to our tour of Prague! Highly recommend!!!
This was possibly the best thing that i did when in prague, my guide brought the stories of prague during WW2 & the communist era to life through his fantastic story telling.
Whilst Prague has centuries of history and historic buildings, the modern history period from 1st World War 1918 to the 1989 breakup of the Soviet Block is equally fascinating. This short 90 min tour visited all significant monuments and places of importance during the 80 year period in which Czechoslovakia changed and became Czech Republic of today. Our guide was a local Czech citizen and was an excellent guide. He was of an age that he could recall Czechoslovakia under communist Soviet control and the events that lead to it becoming an independent capital democracy.
We really enjoyed today's Tour are reared Michal was an excellent communicator and you so much about Prague and the history of the Czech Republic period. We recommend this tour and tour guide !
We really enjoyed the city walk with Martin! He is a very pleasant and knowledgeable guide. We can definitely recommend this tour which focuses on the interesting 20th century history of Prague.
PRAGUE IS OPEN! IF YOU CAN - GO NOW!!! Low crowds and the dollar goes a long way! Martin was a great tour guide and shared a tremendous amount of information that I was unfamiliar with. Though I’ve a general understanding of the unfortunate agreement reached at the end of WWII that resulted in Czech’s being absorbed into the Soviet sphere; Martin’s information on WWII and the Communist era was far deeper than what I’ve read or learned previously. Martin met us at our hotel and we set off from there. The walk from near to the Palace across the river into the new city was all very walkable and manageable for us. The scenery along the way is great to capture and Martin accommodated all of this including taking pictures for us. Martin also shared some personal history under communist times which was interesting to talk about common childhood experiences (He and my wife both experienced Atomic drills in primary school) along with other stories of living “behind the iron curtain” but directly from a Czech perspective. At the end of the tour - Martin gave us recommendations on eating (Local - great beer and local food) along with other “must see” things in the city. We very much recommend the tour and want to thank Martin for the great experience.
Martin was an excellent tour guide who gave a great understanding of Prague and the history of communism and WW2.
unfortunately our guide was an American who had only been in the country two years, and could tell us what he had studied !! was expecting more options and views of residents who had been through the communist era.
This tour ended up being private which was great. Our tour guide was a local and was extremely smart and informative. It was definitely a great experience and she offered us advice of what to do after the tour too!
Right from the time I arrived in Prague, I had a bad feeling about the place. The chocolate box cuteness held zero appeal for me. This was not helped by a distinct lack of help from people whose job it is to help, and getting ripped off by taxi drivers who think tourists are made of money. But things got much worse when I got to the large squares in the Old Town area. Masses of people wandering around licking unhealthy icecreams or sitting in cafes drinking huge glasses of beer and engaged in that most unproductive of activities: 'watching the world go by'. Fortunately, I found the flyer for this tour. It gets out away from the crowds. Our guide Tony was a very pleasant and knowledgeable English guy who made little secret of his dislike of the tourist traps. Incidentally, I can't really imagine a Czech guide on this tour. Despite the fact that their livelihoods depend on tourism, they tend to be pretty unhelpful and surly towards visitors. The prevailing attitude seems to be 'Yeah whatever.. now give me your money'. The highlight was the time we spent at the church memorial where the assassins of Nazi leader Reinhardt Heydrich were finally discovered hiding in 1942. People unfamiliar with this story might not get much from it, but those who are will find it fascinating. For serious students of modern Czech political history, this is the tour you. If you just want to spend some time in Prague, it is not. Just sit in the Old Town Square eating and drinking and learn nothing at all.
An excellent tour. We learned a lot about the history of Prague and Czechoslovaia, particularly the period of World War II and communism. Martin was a very good guide.
Being interested in history, the tour really appealed to me. On the walking tour we learned more about the invasion during WWII and the communist occupation of Prague after the war. Our guide was very well versed in this history.
The excursion took about 2,3 hours which passed very fast. We had an enthusiastic and experienced guide which was the key factor. It is supposed to be a small group and we were just two. Great experience!
We were with a young college student. He was very well informed and could answer our questions with ease. He had a very mature personality.

Our tour guide Maria was excellent she was very knowledgeable about the era and really knew her history. Maria took us to areas that no other tours did so it allowed us to see different parts of Prague. Although our tour was supposed to be just 2 hours Maria extended it to over 3 hours as she was available and knew we were interested. I would highly recommend this tour and suggest that people visit the Museum of Communism which was also terrific.

Martin (our tour guide), university student studying English and History, gave a very nice, comprehensive and interesting review, not only of Czech history, but specifically the Nazi German occupation of Czech. Visited sites on both sides of the river. All in all a very wonderful experience.

It was really great. We were the only people for the tour and altho the guide looked really young he was very interesting, his english was excellent and he answered all our questions in the nicest way. he knew a lot and it was our best visit during our 3 days there. Weldone to him.

It was lovely to chat with a local about things and for him to answer our questions but we didn't learn anything much about WW2 that we didn't already know. Friends have done a different tour and were taken to the tunnels etc and the hideouts of the parachutists. We could have learnt as much with a free city tour as we did on this tour. We just breezed past the Jewish Quarter with very little explanation when this was what I was most interested in. Very disappointing

We were the only two people on this tour... and we enjoyed every minute of the tour! Our guide was knowledgeable, informative and passionate about her hopes for a brighter future for the Czech Republic. Wear comfortable shoes- its a lot of walking.

This tour was a more intimate look at Prague's history. Our guide was really accommodating, having purchased our tickets for the tram and always answering any questions we had. We both learnt a lot about Prague and Czech culture and really went all over the city- which by the way, is astonishing stunning.
Well done and thanks so much!

Dominick our guide was very informative. We saw places, plaques and monuments to WWII and communism we would have over looked. I took this tour with my brother who knows his history and Dominick was up to the challenge. If you are in Prague and have a morning to spare this is a great tour. It focuses on different aspect of Czechoslovakia then a visit to the Prague castle does. I highly recommend this.

The tour begins at Charles Square, continues to the Vitkov memorial and concludes at Wenceslas Square. This is a fascinating tour, full of analysis and stories that you simply cannot get from the history books. The tour was chronological and had clear themes that were tied together at the end when discussing the role of the EU in Czech history. The tour guide was brilliant, informative, clear and insightful. Great tour.

Our guide was wonderful. We ran over at least 15 minutes. He loved questions and the discussion that followed. So surprised that there was just the 2 of us. History buffs are missing out!

this was a great tour. so much history. a must when in Prague. Tour guide was excellent

Martin is very good and competent. He is very kind. We had a private tour as there were only 2 of us. They did not cancel the tour. Very satisfied. We are not kept informed of many details of Czech life.
We have had a highly recommended tour from guide Martin. At home we had seen the film Anthropoid about the 2nd World War which takes place in Prague. That story will recur in the tour. Martin spoke good English and there were two of us so we could ask all the questions.
It was an informative tour. The guide is knowledgeable. He answers questions. The two hours passed very quickly.
