Vitor is amazing, a wonderful way to spend a day! He drove us all (8 class participants) to a historic seafood and produce market in Porto and we watched him select the fish, octopus, vegetables and other ingredients for our cooking class. He explained why he was making his selections and we had the opportunity to wander around the market on our own. Was so nice of him to pick us up from our vacation apartment in the morning and not have to locate the meeting point on our own. Vitor runs a very organized class, he expertly explains what we’re going to do, and demonstrates the process. He’s there to help with his staff if we are not getting it right! All along the way we have snacks and wine. Each dish was delicious and we learned a lot of Portuguese food history in addition to having a great meal and great company! A wonderful experience I would recommend to anyone interested in food culture. An experience we will always remember. Thank you Vitor (and George!) for a wonderful day!

Nothing better than shopping for your lunch at the Mercado and cooking with Viktor and Jorge. A cooking experience not to be missed
From the time you get picked up, to the walk in the market to buy the food you will be cooking, to the kitchen experience. Amazing experience!
AMAZING! We love to do cooking classes when in need countries.. food is the soul of a community and you can learn so much from these traditions. It was fantastic to have an expert to guide us at the fish market. Then walk us through a 3 course meal. We were a family of 3 and was a highlight of our trip to Portugal. Vitor and Jorge were fabulous. Highly recommend.
Absolutely spectacular. We started the day getting picked up outside of Livraria Lello (which our guide suggested since we were going there that morning). We then headed to a local market to pick out our fresh fish and vegetables for our meal. Then we headed back to their converted kitchen / apartment. We broke up preparation for the different parts of the meal - appetizers, main, and desert. We made a mushroom appetizer, a shrimp appetizer, a fish / rice dish, and an almond tart. Very hands on with lots of guidance. And plenty of good local wine flowing throughout. I found this to be one of the absolute best experiences I have ever had on vacation, and I highly recommend it. Vitor and Jorge were so friendly and informative. I can't wait to visit Porto again in hopes of attending another cooking class with them.
As a family of three, we joined the Local Market Tour & Cooking Class in Ribeira. At the market, we discovered the essence of local life: fresh products, warm people, and the rhythm of seasonality. Later, in Vítor’s welcoming studio, we cooked a delicious menu and enjoyed excellent wines. We left with full hearts, full stomachs, and a deeper love for Portuguese food, culture, and the Portuguese people. Muito obrigada, Vítor!
Absolutely a wonderful day!! This taste of Porto and Portuguese culture was extraordinary. The people of Portugal have treated us with courtesy and smiles all over the country, and there are amazing sites and vistas here. But if you want to immerse yourself in the feel of Porto as a living, breathing city, a day with Cook in Ribeira will epitomize the magic of Porto through wonderful food, wine and vitality. Vitor, our host, driver, market guide, chef and entertainer was completely marvelous. We had a market and cooking class for myself, my wife and our two daughters. Vitor took us to a real Porto food market (not a tourist stop), and talked with us at length as we selected the menu for the day to suit the tastes and needs of our group. His teaching kitchen in the heart of Porto was divine, and perfectly suited to a casual day of cooking and conversation. We made sautéed prawns in rosemary and garlic butter, mushrooms with red onion and peppers, sea bass and prawns cooked in shrimp stock, tomato and rice, and a caramelized almond tort. All made from scratch by one of us under his gentle supervision. I forgot to mention the other add ons: amazing Portuguese bread, chorizo roasted in a terra cotta dish over an open alcohol flame, fish roe in olive oil and cilantro, and fresh cooked barnacle snacks. Plus a lovely selection of local white wines to accompany our meal. But the best part of the experience was Vitor himself, whose friendly, welcoming style made everyone feel like we had dropped in on a friend and cooked a 7-course meal on the spot of the moment. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with the world inside of Porto.
On an otherwise rainy trip to Porto this was a sunny delight. Vitor is an amazing guide and really makes you feel welcome. The market tour was a nice change from the touristy spots and the cooking was great. Vitor is very engaging and makes the cooking a lot of fun. And the food is amazing! Looking forward to try and match this at home. If you’re in Porto this is a must-do!
We spent 10 days in Portugal and our day with Vitor was day 2 and one of the best days! The food was so delicious that it spoiled us for the rest of our trip. We had our 10 year old with us and Vitor made everything engaging for him as well. He loved it! Highly recommend booking a day for this tour.
We happened on cooking classes similar to this in Spain last year and had a blast, so we were excited to see offerings in Porto. Of the companies that do this, Cook in Ribiera stood out with great reviews and excellent communication. Our Market tour with cooking class was booked for our second day in Porto and it happened to be one of the hottest days we were there, so we were thankful to be mostly indoors. Vitor picked us up at our hotel around 10:30am. Immediately we love his personality and wit! We shared our class with a young couple from the US who were very nice. The market tour was fantastic. We procured fresh seafood from one vendor in particular and produce from another. Vitor showed us a few Portuguese specific fruits/veggies and once we had everything, we headed back to Porto proper. I enjoy cooking, so the next part was my favorite. We made seafood rice with sea bass, fresh made seafood stock, a sausage/cheese/bread plate as an appetizer and Almond tart for dessert. All of the participants were engaged and we all shared delicious wine and great conversation. Once the meal was ready, we ate together and shared more conversation/wine. In what seems to be the Portuguese way, we NEVER felt rushed or that we were taking too long. The conversation flowed (and the wine) and when it was time to leave, we had full bellies and minds. We will absolutely seek out more cooking adventures in our travels, but I have my doubts that they will be as exceptional as this one. Thanks Vitor!
Our family loved the market tour and cooking class. Vitor made it a wonderful experience. He tailored the meal to our individual tastes. He even made it entertaining for our 7 year old daughter. Visiting the market to pick out ingredients was as exciting as cooking the food. The meal was delicious and plentiful. I will definitely book it again when we return to Porto.
This was a true highlight for our Porto trip. Spending the day shopping for the ingredients and then creating a really memorable meal in Vitor's kitchen studio will be one of our favorite memories. We engaged in lively discussions about Porto, Portugal, and interesting local topics. This class was more than just a cooking experience. We learned about and cooked excellent Portuguese dishes that we will continue to cook. Vitor is lively, engaging, and knowledgeable about more than just food. He made the class so fun for all of us.
We had such fabulous day. Highly recommend this porto market tour and cooking class - it was the highlight of our stay in Porto. Viator thank you so much for such a wonderful experience. I am so looking forward to reproducing the Portuguese meal you helped us cook for our family and friends back in Australia.
Vitor makes Cook in Ribeira a must do experience in Porto. We went to an amazing local market to pick out our ingredients for the class. The market was unlike anything I had ever been to with a large variety of fresh caught fish and amazing fruit and produce. Once back in the kitchen we enjoyed local wines while we worked together to make an amazing meal. Vitor experience and personality made the day fun and I learned a lot about local cuisine and wine.
We had prior contact via email and Vitor was very helpful in customising our participation. We drove along to Matosinhos fish market - a wonderful and surprising experience - to buy ingredients for the cooking class, along with an American couple and their 8-year-old daughter. Back in Porto, they prepared a traditional rice dish and we a cataplana (at our request). It was heartwarming to see how Vitor actively involved the young girl in many of the preparation tasks and even promoted her to photographer on duty. (So no whining here). We had a top-notch experience, including Portonic as an aperitif and some apetisers and a delicious cataplana fish dish as the main course. Vitor is entertaining and super friendly.
I surprised my partner with a cooking class while we were staying in Porto and came across Vitor’s company. Vitor was a great host and made my partner and I feel that we could sit back and enjoy the traditional market experience. The cooking class was an amazing experience and we are still dreaming about the food we made!
Absolutely fantastic. It's clearly a privilege to have the opportunity to interact with Vitor during the hours we had the opportunity to do so. The impeccably clean kitchen combined with a modern and welcoming design, is clearly, along with a knowledgeable, fun, gentlemanly and passionate individual, the experience I choose as the best during our stay in Portugal. Portuguese hospitality is characteristic of its people, but Vitor is elected by us as the most welcoming and friendly of all we met. Thank you very much
This was a learning experience that was a fun, fun day. From food shopping through dessert, we laughed and learned. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was easy and light, and the whole day was a treat! Our hands on cooking produced a wonderful meal. We are still talking about it a month later.
We were in Portugal for 2 weeks, and this was our most unique and fun experience. Vitor and his assistant were excellent teachers and hosts. We had very authentic market experience, which included parts of the city we hadn’t seen. The kitchen was professional and spacious. We helped plan the menu, and truly cooked it all. The recipes were authentic to Portugal. Another couple joined us, and that added to the experience as we joined forces and made new friends.
This was truly one of the best parts of our trip. We loved going to the fish market picking out our fish and then being shown an easy delicious way to prepare it. Votor could not have been any more enjoyable he is a delight to be with has great stories obviously loves people and Has a true passion for cooking and making people happy
We had an excellent time! Vitor and Andre were perfect hosts and along with showing us how to cook delicious foods, they were eager to teach us about their country and culture. I hope to see them again next time we're in Porto!
A wonderfully rich day led by Chef Vitor. The market was impressive, and we learned about a variety of seafood. The kitchen spacious and well suited to a group of 8. We prepared, cooked, ate, drank, shared stories and left full and relaxed.
Vitar was an exceptional host. This is well worth the money that begins with an open air fresh seafood and produce market to buy the supplies for what eventually becomes a spectacular lunch. 5 stars across the board. Vitar is the best and we can’t wait to see him again. Gene and Susie
The most fantastic experience in the company of a true gentleman! Vitor took us shopping, entertained and educated us about Porto and its local specialities and then cooked with us a meal that challenged our taste buds in exactly the right way. We laughed, we learned and we lunched! I made the almond tart and my partner prepared the crab, the clams, the sea bass and the rice dish! (I got the best part of that deal). The wines were local and complimented what we were eating perfectly. Victor’s kitchen was amazing - such a good size and he has had groups in there with him of some size. However, once Paola joined us (she kept the kitchen spotlessly clean) there were just the four of us. This was by far the most enjoyable trip we have booked when on holiday! Vitor has a great gift of communication and will ensure that you take from the trip what you need. I thoroughly enjoyed the sea bass, the chorizo, the barnacles (a first), the clams and the crab especially. I would love to do it all over again.
I repeat, BOOK THIS CLASS (or any of their classes, really ) with Cook in Ribeira immediately. The experience was absolutely as advertised, but it also provided so much more, in terms of enjoying an experience that felt very much like visiting an old friend in a place you've never been to before. Vitor and Andres taught us about food, about Porto wine, about the city and the market, but more importantly, they taught us about what being Portuguese means to them and what life is like in this beautiful country. This is an experience that will 100% guarantee make you very happy. Thank you Vitor and Andres for such a lovely time! We look forward to meeting again someday! Highly recommend.
We took this class with our 21 year old son, and it was a great experience. Vitor was a wonderful host, and we really appreciated the time and attention he gave to teaching our son about choosing produce at the market, cooking, and eating Portugese food. He also gave us a short tour around Porto on the way to the market, which was helpful and fun. This is a must do in Porto!
Loved this class. Vitor was so personable and knowledgeable. He first took is to an amazing fish market in Matisinhos. The fish were right off the boats. Then back to his professional kitchen where we spent the next hours drinking cooking drinking and eating
What a truly lovely experience, COOK IN RIBEIRA!! The Market Tour gave us first hand at choosing the ingredients of fresh fish, seafood and vegetables. Then the Cooking Class... Outstanding! We had the opportunity to really experience the Portuguese Culture through the food. We tried foods we have never eaten before. Everything was delicious and fun! I would totally recommend this Tour & Class! Five Stars!!
Exceeded expectations!!!! Victor was a delightful guide/ host. The market tour was a unique and fun experience and we enjoyed seeing and learning about the variety of fresh fish, seafood and produce. He managed to weave in a little cultural history as well. The cooking class was exceptional! We all love to cook and learn new techniques and cuisines. The food was fresh, full of flavor and unpretentious. We all (9 of us) rated this as our favorite excursion in Portugal. Vitor is warm, gracious and made us feel like part of his family. We would do this again!
First off, our food came out sooo yummy! But beyond the food and cooking experience, Vitor was an excellent host and guide. It was wonderful to spend the day with him, explore the market, and then cook some Portugese food. Would definitely recommend!
My friend Jacob and I had the BEST time with Vitor! Porto is an amazing city with kind people, and it was truly a blessing to have been able to meet Vitor and spend the morning cooking with him. He was so patient and kind from the start. We never felt rushed and we truly enjoyed getting to know him. Going to the marketplace was so fun because we got to come up with our own menu, pick out or vegetables and protein! The studio itself was clean and spacious, and Vitor made us a cocktail to start! We prepped all the food together and the recipes were all easy to follow. We made 3 dishes for lunch and it was so much fun. We ate until we couldn't breathe! I even took some of me successful almond tart home to enjoy later. If you are looking to take a cooking class in Porto, take Vitor's class! Going to the marketplace and having a private class really makes the experience so personal and so much more enjoyable. Not only did I learn a lot, eat a lot, enjoy my time, but I genuinely made a new friend. I am so grateful to Vitor, and can't wait to visit him on my next trip to Portugal!
We have been in Porto for four weeks now and our top experience to date was the half day market tour and cooking class with Victor. I say half day but after meeting at 10, we actually left the cooking school at nearly 4 o’clock. Vitória is a really engaging guy, and like most of the reviewers we came away thinking we had made a friend in Vitor. The trip to Matosinhos Fish Market was great fun as Vitor chatted away to the stall holders and we looked at the fish (and the bread and the vegetables) to see what was good that day. We cooked mussels as a starter, cataplana for main and a lovely but pretty simple almond tart for dessert. While Vitor explained what we needed to do and showed us what to do, the three of us (my wife, me and Vitor) chatted, drank wine, nibbled on cheese and cooked and then chatted some more as we ate our delicious lunch. Would I recommend it? Yes of course and we have recommended it to any of our visitors whilst we have been in Porto.
This is a type of trip that I have been looking for when travelling to a foreign country. I appreciate the experience to visit a local market for fresh ingredients and to cook after in a cozy modern kitchen while drinking good quality wines! As a cherry on top, learning the culture and the history from Vitor the chef was pleasant as he was full of fun to chat all day long. This will go down as one of the best trips. I highly recommend this half-day trip to anyone who visits Porto.
My family had an excellent experience today with Cooking in Ribeira in Porto. Vitor picked us up in the morning and we went to the seafood market in Matosinhos to buy ingredients for our cooking class. After buying a variety of seafood and vegetables, we went to Vitor's studio kitchen and started preparing our lunch of steamed mussels and barnacles, fried swordfish and roe, sauteed baby shrimp, tomato and pepper rice and an almond tart. We very much enjoy cooking, and Vitor taught us very simple yet delicious Portugese cooking preparations that we will definitely use at home. Vitor is smart, entrepreneurial, engaging and charismatic, and we talked all afternoon about Portugese history, politics, development in Porto and, of course, cooking and wine. We highly recommend doing this when in Porto -- it is a great way to avoid the teaming masses in the old town while getting both a delicious home-cooked Portugese meal and a very authentic and genuine experience. We all enjoyed this day very much, thank you Vitor for everything!
My boyfriend and I have not been able to stop talking about the day we had with Vitor today! I HIGHLY recommend taking the time to do the half day tour, which includes going to the market first. It made the experience feel that much more personalized, and unique. It was a complete cultural immersion as Vitor took us around the market, explained to us the fish, vegetables, olives, bread, meat, and eggs he was picking out- all for us to use to cook in just an hour!!!!! The market experience was unlike any other we had done in our travels, and it was so interesting to watch Vitor communicate with the people. The ride to and from the market Vitor got to know us, and us him, as well as explain all the sights and places we were seeing. The cooking class made me feel like I was in a friend’s kitchen enjoying the day! He had appetizers ready for our arrival and made us cocktails to enjoy as he laid out all our ingredients. My boyfriend, one not inclined to cook, jumped right in too. Vitor has a way of making you feel like you’re a pro! The food was delicious, we had muscles, tomato salad, swordfish, shrimp, egg fish, rice, and a dessert! With wine to drink of course. I know his menu varies but I have no doubt whatever he plans will be amazing. The love and care he puts into his business and the day is evident in every way. We loved having Vitor sit and enjoy the meal with us as well like friends. By the end that is what we felt like! Every minute of this experience was worth it. We will remember it, and Vitor, forever!
We had a very nice time with chef Christina and Vitor on our cooking class. It was a good experience with knowing a new recipes of traditional Portugal dishes. Also, we have visit fish market with colourful offer, not only fish but also vegetable, etc. With dishes we prepared, we drank excellent Portugal wine and very good typical aperitive. Thank you Christine for your advices, and you Vitor for interesting drive with Landrover to fish market and having a great time on cooking class. Jana, Lučo from Slovenija
We started the day by driving out to the fish market, where we saw where the fresh fish came from, as we had supplied ourselves, we drove back to the city center, where we had to make delicious food from the bottom. It was a super cozy way to do it, where everyone was to participate. (I was responsible for the dessert), While the food was made, from the delicious ingredients, some delicious vino verde was drunk. To everyone’s surprise except the chef chef who was responsible for it, it tasted incredibly good. We spent a lot of hours, but it suited well to the event, as everyone participated in the cooking.
A memorable experience I recommend without hesitation Friendliness good mood as with a friend who would receive us at home
Absolutely excellent. It was one of the surprises I had planned for the day I asked my bride for marriage. It perfectly matched what he wanted for that special day moment. The space is well decorated, it is modern, clean and well equipped. Our host Vitor Cândido has always demonstrated a lot of sympathy and availability, but also a lot of professionalism throughout the workshop. I also mention that on the eve I asked you to make me a snack to bring at the end of the workshop, and voila, we had juice, fruit, slices of pie and croissants... Experience 5 stars!!!
