Be ready to taste the delicious foods of Portugal. Jose (?) was a wonderful guide. He provided a wealth of information about Portugal and its history, while at the same time, helping us in our exploration of some excellent Portuguese food. The food and wine were excellent and the sausage with the fire was quite an experience. We tried a great number of different Portuguese dishes and drinks. I would highly recommend this tour guide and the tour.

Itinerary
Your Porto Food Tour begins at the iconic Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls), famous for its stunning blue-and-white azulejo tiles that depict scenes from the lives of saints. This picturesque chapel, located on Rua de Santa Catarina — Porto’s vibrant pedestrian shopping street — provides a perfect starting point for your culinary journey. As you arrive, your expert local guide will be there to greet you with a warm welcome. After gathering the group, your guide will give a short introduction to the city’s rich culinary traditions and explain the exciting tastings that await you. You’ll also receive a brief overview of Porto’s history, culture, and the strong connection between local gastronomy and the city's heritage. This first stop sets the stage for an authentic Portuguese food experience, where you’ll explore family-owned eateries, hidden gems, and sample some of the best traditional dishes Porto has to offer.
Our next stop brings you to one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks: Mercado do Bolhão, the city's historic food market. Here, you’ll experience the vibrant atmosphere of local vendors offering fresh produce, regional delicacies, and traditional products that reflect Porto’s rich culinary heritage. Hidden just steps away from the market, we’ll take you to a true local gem, where you’ll enjoy a unique tasting of Portuguese gourmet canned fish — an authentic delicacy that showcases the art of fish preservation, a proud tradition in Portugal. To elevate the experience, your tasting will be perfectly paired with a crisp Douro Valley white wine, selected from one of the region's prestigious wineries. As your guide shares the stories behind the flavors, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Porto’s gastronomic culture and the importance of seafood in Portuguese cuisine.
After visiting Mercado do Bolhão, your guide will lead you on a leisurely walk along Rua de Santa Catarina, Porto’s most famous pedestrian street. As you stroll through this lively avenue, you’ll discover the fascinating history of Porto's commercial heart, where traditional shops stand alongside modern boutiques, reflecting the city’s transformation over the years. Along the way, your guide will share local stories, fun facts, and point out architectural highlights that many visitors overlook. One of the key landmarks on this street is the Café Majestic, an iconic Belle Époque café known for its ornate decor and long history as a meeting place for artists, politicians, and intellectuals. The walk continues toward the southern end of the street, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Porto's downtown area, offering a perfect moment to take photos and appreciate the city's vibrant atmosphere before continuing your food adventure.
No Porto food tour would be complete without tasting the city’s most famous — and most indulgent — dish: the Francesinha. At a traditional local restaurant, you’ll sit down to enjoy this iconic Portuguese sandwich, layered with various meats, melted cheese, and covered in a rich, slightly spicy beer-based sauce. As you savor each bite, your guide will share the fascinating story behind the Francesinha's creation, its connection to Porto's culinary identity, and how it became a beloved comfort food among locals and visitors alike. You’ll also discover which restaurant is credited as the birthplace of this legendary dish. To complement the flavors, your meal will be paired with a refreshing local Portuguese beer, perfectly balancing the richness of the Francesinha and enhancing the tasting experience.
Before heading to your next tasting, your guide will take you on a short cultural walk through some of Porto’s most emblematic landmarks. You’ll stroll along Avenida dos Aliados, the city’s grand central avenue, known for its impressive architecture, elegant buildings, and historical significance as Porto’s political and social heart. If guests are interested, the walk may include a visit to São Bento Station, world-famous for its breathtaking azulejo tile panels depicting key moments in Portuguese history and everyday life. Here, your guide will share fascinating stories and fun facts that bring Porto's rich cultural heritage to life. This cultural pause offers the perfect balance between history and gastronomy, while building your appetite for the next delicious stop on your Porto Food Tour.
Continuing your journey through Porto’s vibrant culture, you’ll head towards the area surrounding Porto University, one of the city’s most charming and historic quarters. As your guide shares more captivating insights into Porto’s academic life, culture, and local traditions, you’ll soon arrive at another hidden culinary gem. Here, you’ll sit down to enjoy one of Portugal’s most beloved dishes: piri-piri chicken. Grilled to perfection and infused with just the right amount of spice, this Portuguese classic reflects the influence of Portugal's maritime discoveries and the global journey of spices brought back from distant lands. To elevate the flavors, your piri-piri chicken will be paired with a refreshing glass of Vinho Verde, the light and slightly effervescent "green wine" produced in the lush vineyards of Northern Portugal. During this stop, your guide will explain the fascinating history of Vinho Verde, its unique production methods, and the terroir that makes it so special.
The cultural and gastronomic adventure continues as you pass by two of Porto’s most iconic religious landmarks — the Carmo and Carmelitas Churches. Separated by one of the narrowest houses in the world, these stunning baroque churches are filled with curious legends and surprising architectural details that your guide will reveal. Next, you’ll visit Café Piolho, one of Porto’s most famous student cafés, historically frequented by university students and intellectuals for generations. It’s a perfect spot to learn more about Porto’s academic life and vibrant café culture. From there, your guide will lead you to a charming old tavern, where you’ll experience a traditional Portuguese delicacy: roasted chorizo. Served in a flaming clay dish, this smoky, flavorful sausage is both a visual and culinary treat. To accompany the chorizo, you’ll enjoy a perfectly paired Portuguese Rosé Wine, offering a refreshing balance to the rich flavors of the dish.
Before continuing with the final tastings, your guide will take you to one of Porto’s most breathtaking viewpoints: Miradouro da Vitória. From this panoramic terrace, you'll enjoy sweeping views over the historic city, the winding Douro River, the famous Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, and several of Porto’s most iconic monuments, including the Cathedral and Clérigos Tower. As you take in the incredible scenery, your guide will share fascinating stories about Porto's history, its maritime legacy, and its world-renowned wine tradition. This moment offers the perfect blend of culture, history, and stunning visuals — and a chance to capture beautiful photos of your Porto experience.
No food tour in Portugal is complete without the country’s most famous sweet: the Pastel de Nata (Portuguese custard tart). At one of Porto’s best traditional bakeries, you’ll taste what many locals consider to be the finest Pastéis de Nata in the city — freshly baked and served warm. During this stop, you’ll learn about the history of this iconic pastry, its origins in Portuguese convents, and the secrets behind its flaky crust and creamy filling. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the bakery chef preparing a fresh batch right before your eyes! To complete this sweet moment, you can choose your favorite drink to pair with the tart: an espresso, coffee, cappuccino, or tea, just as locals do.
Your Porto Food Tour concludes in the vibrant Ribeira district, the city’s historic riverside neighborhood and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This lively area is perfect to unwind after your immersive culinary journey, with stunning views of the Douro River and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Here, your guide will share final fun facts and stories about Porto’s rich culture, fascinating history, and renowned gastronomy, tying together everything you’ve discovered throughout the day. But before you say goodbye, get ready for a special culinary surprise — a delicious finale that perfectly captures the spirit and flavors of Porto, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your food adventure. Ribeira is also a great spot if you wish to continue exploring on your own, with many nearby wine cellars, cafes, and bars recommended by your guide.

I'm not sure if this was the exact tour I went on but I was met by Alvaro Santos at the Chapel of Souls. The food, wine, and beer was all excellent including the Francesinha, pastel de nata, the chocolate cup with the shot of liqueur, and the flaming chorizo. The tour was supposed to be a small group, but I was the only participant, so it turned into a private tour!
Tour guide Rodrigo, was an excellent guide, spent over 4 hours on the trip. Spent as much time on historical culture as well as the food history of Portugal. Best food tour we have taken
Our guide provided much information about the history of Portugal and Porto as well as City’s buildings , churches and landmarks. Plenty of delicious food!
Great tour of Porto. There are several stops for great food and we have a great guide. He was friendly knowledgeable and kind. Thank you for a great experience.
Gregorio had a passion for the city and gave us wonderful insights into the history of the city and country. Had some great food samples (some traditional, some unexpected) and he was just a great person to talk to about life in general in Portugal.
We met our guide NuNu on time, was happy to see there was no other tourists in our group. We bounded right away. Since we just tour the Mercado do Bolhoa, we didn’t waste much time in there. But we did circle around and tried some samples. NuNu was very helpful, realized that my sister needed some items, he took us shopping on the way to next stop. The Frichies sandwich was interesting and he explained it do amusingly. The walks was delightful, he showed us some interesting site on the way. The succession tastings were just so amazing. When we need to leave to meet our family just arrived from airport, NuNu helped us is getting the best location to meet the Uber driver. We had a great time
Thank you for an amazing day. Food was scrumptious. History lessons were appreciated and informative. Great to be able to share experiences with owner/operator and photographer. Well planned out day with locations for food tastings were strategic. We enjoyed thoroughly. Highly recommended.
Highly recommend this Food Tour! Gregory (Joao) was the best tour guide we’ve had. So much food and wine and beer! Everything delicious and so much good information about Porto along the way. Loved everything about it.
We had a fantastic time with our guide Maria. She had so much to tell us about the history and culture of Porto. We got to walk around the city seeing the sights and eating some very tasty cuisine and just generally enjoying the whole experience.
Pros: there is quite a bit of walking, but the tour guide kept a comfortable pace, and we didn’t feel rushed at any of the places compared to other food tours we’ve attended. Cons: our guide didn’t typically facilitate the food tour, so you can tell it wasn’t much of what he was interested in. The tour itself was pretty dry and boring. Lots of silence and not too much conversation. The food we were eating was not described to us and there wasn’t much explanation of things about the city unless we asked. If we asked about things, he was conversational; otherwise we walked and ate in silence. This was probably my least favorite tour in the sense of ambiance, but the food was good. I’d recommend that the agency they work for have guides that stick to specific tours so that they can enjoy what they’re doing. The guide essentially makes or breaks the tour.
Our group of friends had a memorable time on the Oporto Food Tour. Our guide Marlene was really captivating and took us on a tour of many of the must try foods in Oporto. I'll let the exact places remain a surprise, but we went to very nice local shops and restaurants where locals eat and are popular for their meals. We also made a quick tour of Mercado Bolhau and several famous landmarks and viewpoints. There is some walking involved in the tour, but nothing too intense. The tour exceeded our expectations in every way. Come hungry and ask for Marlene. We highly recommend this tour.
We loved trying different foods and our tour guide was very personable!! Different canned fish, bifanas, gilled chicken with piri piri sauce. Different wines and beer. There was more to try, but we didn’t wanna be late to get back on the ship.
Today we went on a food tour throughout Porto with the lovely Marlene. We have a few things we do not eat and she adjusted easily. We had the most wonderful and tasty afternoon. I've never tried sardines, and ended up loving them. There wasn't anything that was not delicious, and she added in a lot of the history of Porto on our tour. It was perfect.
We had a very pleasant day walking through Porto and tasting local foods. The food choices were excellent and plentiful. Our guide was terrific at adapting to our preferences. This tour was more about tasting local foods and orienting yourself to the sites of Porto, rather than a culinary experience. (Although, the food choices were high quality!) Our guide was interesting and happy to share about local customs and lifestyle.
Roderick our guide was excellent made my birthday special and everyone of our friends and family thought this was the best day in Porto
The Duoro river trip was great. Our tour guide Peidro was informative in telling stories about Duoro. The wineries were interesting and tasty. Loved the lunch stop as well.
Maria was an excellent guide, making this a great way to get to know Porto and learn about its rich history. As much as I enjoyed the food and drink aspect, I really enjoyed walking around Porto and taking in the sights. Signing up for city tours such as these can often be hit or miss; groups can be large making one-on-one time with guides to ask questions difficult. Luckily, we were the only two in the group, making it a private tour! We learned the origin of the famed Francesinha; schooled on bacalhau; introduced to chouriço, which is finished at your table in custom-made clay pots; ate like locals at Pedro dos Frangos; and of course, indulged in chocolate eclairs for dessert! At the end of the day, we ate, we imbibed and were able to get in some exercise!
We had a preconceived idea of what a food tour would be like though we had never taken one. It was recommended that we do so by friends. We thought we would stop at a food market and sample a few things, and after a couple of hours we would be done. Maria met us at the arranged spot. She was prompt and friendly and introduced herself, then we began our adventure! Five hours later we had eaten Francesinho in an elegant restaurant for lunch, sardines and cod at another spot for snacks, downed a wonderful chicken dish of Peri, Peri chicken with a third proprietor, learned about the cooking of traditional Portuguese sausage, then finished with coffee and sweets. A complementary glass of wine was provided at each site. Maria inquired about any allergies and was able to modify dishes to satisfy those needs. Five hours later we had learned so much about Portuguese food, culture, history and people, and had toured much of the city. She could provide answers to any questions we asked and offered so much knowledge and understanding of her country as well as ours. We had a phenomenal experience, and would recommend Maria and thecooltours.com to anyone and everyone who visits Porto!
A delicious and informative tour of Porto! Our guide Maria was fantastic. We learned loads about the city and its history. Maria was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all of our questions. We loved experiencing the city from recent to medieval history.of The tour is on foot and mostly downhill. We had plenty of chances to sit down and cool off at the various stops. And plenty of libations alongside the food we experienced.
I had booked this tour several months in advance because it was my sister's birthday and we had one day in Porto we were on a cruise ship. I got all of my confirmations, the day before the tour, of the time the tour started. We got there early, and no one was there then I got a notification that we were not there 45 minutes before the tour started so they left without us. They also said they called me to notify me of the change in time, I had no missed calls. They did give me a list of the restaurants that they went to and what they had so we did try to do the tour, but it was stressful and such a disappointment, I wanted things to be perfect for my sister. They also did refund me but you can't get that experience back. If you are going to change the tour time the day before you need to make sure people get it and if you are on a cruise ship you may not be able to accommodate a change. This was not a last minute booking for us and you should not change times a day before.
We had a wonderful time on this tour with Rodrigo. Our tour was only 4 people which made it so enjoyable, we got to know each other and enjoy all the different stops. This is the first time I’ve done a food tour but such a good way to learn more about the city through food. Rodrigo was an excellent tour guide, easy to chat to, and extremely knowledgeable. There are 5 stops on the tour, all of which were excellent. As others have said, arrive hungry, and don’t make big plans for dinner. I can’t recommend this enough
We spent a day with our tour guide Bruno and another couple exploring Porto’s marketplace and a variety of eateries. Bruno was a great guide. He explained many traditions, as well as introducing us to the unique flavors of Porto foods. His English was impeccable and enthusiasm for working with us and showing us historical areas with tidbits of knowledge made our an experience memorable. You can’t go wrong with this tour.
Excellent. Rodrigo was a fantastic guide. Great information Great personality and a lot of fun. Tons of food and drinks. You won’t go hungry. Do not hesitate to book this Best experience in Porto. Cheers 🍻
We took the Food and Wine Tour and enjoyed it very much. Maria was our guide and she could not have been more knowledgeable. Her English is perfect, having spent time in Great Britain. She tailored the tour to our interests and appetites. The food and drink were delicious and ample. The vendors were all the creme de la creme. The biggest surprise was how much history we learned. Maria is very knowledgeable and wove so much into our walk through the city. We highly recommend the tour and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Maria was wonderful during our 4 1/2-hour food tour through Porto on April 25. We found her wide range of knowledge about culture and history in Porto and the surrounding region to be fascinating, and she adapted the tour and conversation to our interests. She answered all our questions with a great deal of charm and knowledge. Tours by the same company can be very different depending upon the guide, and we strongly recommend asking for Maria.
We had a brilliant day on the food tour. Our guide Rodrigo was knowledgeable and informative - we learned about both the food we were eating and also some history of the area. And the food - so delicious and so much of it! Canned fish, the famous Francesinha sandwich, roasted chorizo, piri piri chicken, and of course some nata! We also sampled some lovely wine, beer and port. Perfect! We highly recommend this fantastic tour - turn up hungry and don’t plan a big meal afterwards, you won’t need it!
It was very good experience! Milena was our tour guide, she is really nice and helpful person, I can highly recommend this tour especially with her.
Our tour guide Isa was excellent And very knowledgeable about the city of Porto. The food and wine was delicious and the portions generous
Our Porto food tour was a very enjoyable day. Our guide Pedro was charming, even rescuing us from being lost, and very knowledgeable. It was like spending a day with a friend. We saw lots of the city, learnt more about local habits and places to eat and enjoyed great food and wine. Excellent value. We would highly recommend this tour.
We LOVED this tour with Maria so much we had her book us for another tour in Sintra before we said goodbye. (Which she also offered a discount on.) Maria was knowledgeable , friendly and professional. The tour was a great combination of Porto culture and history & great food and wines. It honestly felt like you were out exploring the city with a good friend. I recommend doing a tour with Cooltours at the start of your stay, it will give you a great lay of the land and you will have places to go back to (you definitely will want to because there are so many great stops on this tour.) Maria found out my love for chocolate and made a quick change so that I could try the best chocolates in Porto. We can not wait to come back for the Duoro wine tour!!
Great tour guide who explained everything well. Very sympathetic and friendly! Our wishes have also been addressed.
This tour has been wonderful! Thanks to our guide Milena Craveiro, who has accompanied us through Porto beautifully. Friendly, very friendly, very well documented, rating that he loves his work. She's a great professional, we had a great time with her. The tour highly recommended, the places it took us were typical, very well selected and without hurry, leaving us to taste and rest. Recommended this tour with Milena!
