Itinerary
It's in the old historical neighbourhood that we find the routes of Porto, the first residents, the Cathedral and the first jewish community.
It was at the Riverside area that the city developed in terms of trade and business. In the area we had a lot of merchants that had there stores and houses creating a maze of narrow streets.
The Vitória neighbourhood was one the jewish quarters we had in Porto. Established in 1386 by King João I it was one of the biggest jewish communities in the city.
The historical documents show that the Olival neighbourhood had a cemetery nearby. Accordingly to those documents the Virtudes Garden was in a far away era, the Jewish Cemetery

Pedro was amazing a wealth of knowledge about not only the history of the Jewish people in Porto but about Portugal’s history. i would highly recommend Pedro for any tour
Pedro was awesome very knowledgable and passionate about the Jewish history of Portugal. Little is really known but his research paints a great picture
Our tour guide, Joao, was extremely well prepared, and spoke in a manner making it easy for this hard of hearing tourist to understand every word he said. He answered every question we had he gave us lots of information about the City of Porto too. I could not recommend him more highly. GREAT TOUR!
Pedro was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He was very organized as well. He found little secret areas for us. Highly recommend.
A lot of walking on uneven stone. Many climbing stairs. Tour guide was very accommodating and took care not to rush us (4 seniors). He was very prepared and informative.
Great tour with really knowledgeable, interesting and charming guide - learnt a lot and would recommend highly
We had an amazing walking tour with Joao Rocha as he took us on the Jewish History Tour. Joao was wonderful as he explained all about the history of the Jewish people that lived in Porto . He was very knowledgeable, kind and considerate and made sure we were comfortable every step of the way. When the tour was over , it didn’t seem like 3 hours had gone by. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed our time with Joao and would recommend anyone coming to Porto and wants to take this tour to have Joao be their guide!
the worst guide i have ever had. really did not realize it was a jewish tour he was giving. to say that the jews moved to a getto which he would not say getto and locked in at night made the jews happy to uproot their homes and moved to be locked in at night was what the jews liked. reasoning is they had their own oven for cooking. Also the October 7 attack may not have happened depending on the media that you read. bad answer for the murder, torture, and rape of innocent people. You should be ashamed for hiring a person like that. I WANT MY MONEY BACK. MORRIE REIFF 01+818-359-6888
Very detailed and personable guide. Riveting history of Jewish perseverance. Our guide, Ricardo, did an excellent job of weaving Portugal and Jewish history. Great tour.
Our guide said that Insurrection was not all bad was not acceptable. Putting Jews in an area where they were locked in at night and opened in the morning was a good thing because they had their own oven to cook with, he said that. We asked if he thought the massacre in Israel was a bad thing and he said that he could not comment because guides are to be impartial, killing anyone is terrible and never calls for someone to be impartial . We were very disappointed as we did not see much of a Jewish area or a temple or history. Also have guides that are more knowledgeable about problems that the Jews dealt with. That was part of Portugal history, not taking sides, really?. That is explaining what happened to the Jewish people. He did tell the history of some of the churches but not sure why on a Jewish tour. We already knew the Porto had a lot of churches but were on a Jewish Tour. We went with this tour and requested a specific guide that was not Jewish but he was not available who we were told did a great tour but for us this was not good. For us this was a waste of our time, and money. Not happy and would not recommend to friends coming to Porto. Please do a better job picking guides.
We had a wonderful Jewish walking tour with Ricardo, our guide. I was concerned because I have multiple sclerosis with associated heat intolerance, and it was 89 degrees. However, we stuck to the shadows as much as possible, and we made frequent stops. It was very interesting, and we learned a lot. We saw the Aron Hakhodesh from a secret synagogue. It was a terrific tour. I highly recommend it!
Very informative. Our tour guide, Ricardo, was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information..
Very interesting and informative. The guide had so much information and pictures. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Porto.
Ricardo was our guide. Unbelievably knowledgeable and funny as hell! His wealth of knowledge and depth of experience was truly amazing. And he is only 23! He was able to "read" the crowd and paced the walking perfectly for all of us. I never had to think about needing a rest because Ricardo had planned the stops from walking perfectly. Efun was fantastic. We made an error and missed our original booking date and they arranged the tour for us the following day. Our only issue was the meeting point address info. We were provided an address which was wrong and had to frrantically jump into a cab to get to the correct place. Not sure if this caused by the booking company or Efun, but I refuse to place the blame on Efun because they were so great to work with. If you want to see and learn about the 1000 year history of Jews in Porto, take this tour, book with Efun and ask for Ricardo.
It was a wonderful tour. Our guide, Ricardo, was outstanding! He provided a wealth of information and knowledge.
Wonderful tour. Exploring Porto Jewish history. Lots of steps:/ uphill. Guide west at our pace. Very interesting !
What a wonderful way to explore Porto and learn about it the History of this area through a different point of view.
Our tour guide did a great job tellling us about all the areas that the Jewish people lived in and were then exiled from. Very informative!!!
Pedro was a superb guide. He was knowledgeable and passionate. I would highly recommend him. Thank you.
Ricardo is an exceptional guide. As everyone has pointed out, he has a truly vast knowledge of Jewish history in Porto, and Portugal as a whole - he may very well know more than the Jewish community of Porto! His passion is clearly evident, and it is no wonder that he is embarking on a Masters thesis in this scholarly realm. We really appreciated him telling the story, but also highlighting the gaps in knowledge, while pointing out possible theories to explain them and the supporting evidence regarding Jewish existence before and after the expulsion of Jewish and other religious minorities. We were able to experience and learn firsthand about each of the three Jewish quarters. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in learning more about this important part of Portugese history (he also shows off some great viewpoints that are also relevant to the tour!)
Pedro was fantastic and so knowledgeable. He gave us both a very broad and detailed understanding of the Jewish History of Porto. He is a great communicator and storyteller.
We visited during a torrential downpour with high winds, and unfortunately our guide showed no concern for the weather. He continued talking as we stood in the rain getting completely soaked, without making any effort to move the group under cover—especially frustrating since there was nothing to see and we could have been anywhere. After about 10 minutes, we told him we couldn’t continue the tour due to the severe weather. He was dismissive, acted like he didn’t care, and was outright rude as we left. To make matters worse, when I contacted Viator for a refund, the tour operator refused. The entire experience was unprofessional and very disappointing.
Daniel was excellent! He was so well educated on the Jewish history of Porto as well as Portugal as a whole. He answered questions with no hesitation about current events as well as historical. He explained the government and political views of Portugal. I would not hesitate to recommend him as a guide for this Jewish Heritage walking tour of Porto.
The tour was very interesting and informative. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the Jewish history of Porto and Lisbon. It turned out that the tour was just the 2 of us so we had a personal experience and we were able to go at our own pace and ask as many questions as we liked. The guide also very kindly waited for us because we were a few minutes late. Our Uber was stuck in traffic and I sent a message that we were on our way. He responded immediately and was very understanding. I highly recommend this tour.
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Ricardo. He knows a great deal about the history of Jews in Porto, and shared stories that helped us appreciate the key elements.
Daniel is a knowledgeable, personable guide who took us on an amazing tour full of information, supported by visuals he prepared himself. He has studied his field and is very professional and yet caring. I recommend his tour very highly.
Fascinating historical tour. Ricardo was so knowledgeable about the history of the Jewish community in Porto and Portugal. Highly recommend.
It was a great experience. Pedro, our guide, was extremely nice. He was very knowledgeable regarding the Jewish History of Porto. He made the tour very interesting. We saw several of the past Jewish areas.
Our guide was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable about Jewish history in Porto and he was able to explain it clearly. The tour is informative and interesting.
It was wonderful. Our guide Daniel knew so much and was enthusiastic about everything he showed us. He handled a difficult chapter in history brilliantly
This is a very fascinating tour giving great insight into the important Jewish history of Porto as it relates to each historical period in the city’s past. The sites visited provided us with a deep understanding of how Sephardic Jews thrived in each context during hundreds of years in Porto as they moved from one area to the next, and eventually were expelled., and took us through the twentieth century and the present. Pedro is extremely knowledgeable and fascinating in his presentation, and we highly recommend this experience.
Daniel was an excellent guide. He answered all questions and extremely knowledgeable about the Jewish religion, he being not Jewish. We enjoyed this tour very much!
Our tour with Daniel was excellent. First, we appreciated that even though we were the only ones that booked, that the tour proceeded, unlike several experiences over the years (including in Sintra) where a tour was cancelled due to low bookings. Daniel gave us a great understanding of the areas and history of the Jewish experience and outcomes of Porto and Portugal’s history. Still am not sure how it can be that someone with the name Daniel Levy is not actually Jewish himself, but it made for an interesting back-story of how he got into personally learning the history of the Jews there and has a deep knowledge and understanding able to answer any questions. The most interesting element was his being able to arrange to visit a seniors ‘day care’ space where 20 years ago, a 16th century torah of a hidden synagogue (during the inquisition times) had been found hidden behind a false wall in what had been a home and is now detailed with information. Highly recommend and would suggest that increased promotion will ensure higher demand.
Daniel, for as young as he is, has a tremendous grasp of both Portuguese history and the Jewish experience in Portugal from the Phoenicians to modern times. He was wonderful to have as our guide and we really enjoyed our tour. While there are not many remaining Jewish artifacts in Porto, Daniel arranged for us to see the remains of an Aron Kodesh that had been kept hidden inside a wall for more than 100 years after the Portuguese inquisition. Although not Jewish himself, Daniel has a strong affinity for Jewish history and Israel. He also recommended a delicious vegetarian restaurant we enjoyed very much. Well worth a few hours while visiting Porto.
Daniel was fabulous and we learned so much about the Jewish community of Porto. I especially liked being able to see the Aron Hakodesh, which now is surprisingly located inside of an old age home. Thank you, Daniel!
This tour was a wonderful experience. Ricardo was a great guide Friendly personable and very knowledgeable. He answered all our questions gave great explanations. Took us all around and helped us get where we were going after it was over. Highly recommend thus tour and guide
We absolutely enjoyed our Jewish quarters tour in Portugal. Our guide was so knowledgeable and articulate. He presented the information well and engaging.
Ricardo was a fantastic and knowledgeable tour guide. He was very informative and we really enjoyed this Jewish Heritage walking tour. It was very interesting. I highly recommend this tour
Gained a great understanding of the history of the Jewish people in Northern Portugal. Our guide was terrific and extremely knowledgeable
Ricardo is an amazing tour guide. He has so much knowledge of the history and timelines of the Jewish people and those who settled in Porto. Listening to him was so interesting - he connected the dots of how the Jewish people lived in the city. We learned and saw so much. We left Porto with a better understanding of how the Jewish community lived and survived.
Daniel was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be with. Really took care of us and our needs. He was a pleasure to be with.
Our tour guide, Ricardo, was a knowledgeable, friendly, history teacher with a passion for the history of Jews in Portugal. I highly recommend this tour.
An excellent tour by Ricardo, including a wealth of information regarding Jewish history and contributions to Portugal, especially in Porto. He was great in answering questions.
Ricardo was a truly amazing guide. I have never met anyone so steeped in the history and information of their tour before. Thoughtful, interesting, warm, and fun to learn this history with. Would recommend him in a heartbeat!!!
Ricardo was beyond our favorite guide we had through our entire stay in Porto! His knowledge and passion for the Jewish history in Portugal is beyond impressive. We ended up learning so much from him and truly made our last day special. Could not recommend more 15/10.
Wonderful tour. Ricardo, our guide, is a true historian and provided us with a wealth of information. He walked us through the city and showed us what very few sites of Judaism that are left. It is a sad history and Ricardo told it with compassion and understanding. It is only now that Portugal is beginning to publicly recognize their destruction of Judaism in their country.
Guide spent a lot of time telling us about his frustrations and theories. He had good intentions but his personal concerns seemed to be top of mind. We did meet other lovely people on the tour which was lovely.
Ricardo is a great guide. A true historian with a passion for sharing knowledge and love for Porto. We took a Jewish tour, went through centuries of history of Porto and Portuguese Jews in the course of 3 hours. Intelligent and considerate young man . We highly recommend this tour.
Ricardo led us on a super memorable tour. It was everything we hoped and more. He was able to bring Porto to life for us with so many intricate details. We have so much information to process and do further research on. We really felt that Ricardo went out of his way to make the Jewish tour fun and interesting. He is a superstar and excellent at his job. We would highly recommend him to individuals or groups. Will remember Porto fondly because of him.
