Your expert guide will collect you at your accommodation and will drive you from Porto to the Fátima, on of the most famous and important sites in Portugal due to the events known as the Apparitions of Fátima, that took place there in 1917.
Discover Fátima, a historic settlement that flourished during the Arabian occupation. Legend has it that during the Christian Reconquest, Templar knight Gonçalo Hermingues fell in love with Fátima, a captured Moor who converted to Christianity and took the name Oureana. In the 16th century, Fátima became a parish within the Diocese of Leiria. Its major development occurred after the Apparitions of Fátima in the early 20th century, making it a renowned center for the Cult of the Virgin Mary, recognized globally by the Catholic Church.
One of the largest Marian centers in the world, Fátima is a major pilgrimage site. It commemorates the apparitions of Our Lady to three shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—in 1917, officially recognized in 1930. These events occurred at Cova da Iria, a rural property owned by Lucia's parents and later donated to the Shrine, where five of the six apparitions took place.
In 1919, locals built the Chapel at the heart of the current Fátima Sanctuary, fulfilling Our Lady's request during one of her apparitions. The first mass was held there in 1921. Despite some changes for preservation, the chapel maintains its original simple hermitage-like design. It marks the spot of the holm-oak tree where the apparitions occurred; the tree gradually disappeared as believers took twigs for souvenirs. This sacred site was where the shepherds and other faithful gathered to pray the rosary.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, designed by Gerardus van Krieken and completed by João Antunes, had its first stone blessed on May 13, 1928, and was dedicated on October 7, 1953. Pope Pius XII granted it the title of Basilica the following year. Inside, the basilica features 14 lateral altars dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary. Stained glass windows and paintings by João de Sousa Araújo depict scenes from the life of Our Lady and the Apparitions of Fátima. The main chapel includes artworks by Maumejean and Sons depicting the Evangelists and scenes of pilgrimage. In the transept, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who were canonized in 2017 by Pope Francis at the Shrine of Fátima, are buried.
The three shepherd children to whom Our Lady appeared - Lúcia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta - were born in the small village of Aljustrel, around 2 kms from the sanctuary of Fátima. The single-storey cottages formerly inhabited by the little shepherds are very similar in terms of architecture and simplicity and are open to the general public. The house inhabited by the brother and sister, Jacinta and Francisco was built in 1888 and is located around 200 m from the house of their cousin, Lúcia, built in 1885. The House-Museum of Aljustrel is located next to the latter, displaying agricultural implements, cooking utensils, clothes and furniture, in order to demonstrate the everyday lives of local mountain dwellers in the early 20th century.
It's time for lunch! enjoy a complete portuguese lunch with drinks included!
Before returning to Porto, the tour concludes with a visit to Coimbra. Situated along the river Mondego, Coimbra is renowned for its historic University, the oldest in Portugal and among the oldest in Europe, earning it the moniker "the city of students". Your guide will offer insights into the city and its landmarks, including the university with its famous courtyard, tower, and library (entrance fees not included). A panoramic tour will showcase other significant points of interest, highlighting Coimbra's Romanesque architectural treasures. As the students' fado song suggests, "Coimbra has more charm in the hour of parting," but you might discover its allure well before then...

Bernardo was a great guide, was knowledgeable and shared his passion of Portugal. He ensured we had a nice experience.
Orlando was very knowledgeable & helpful. He was also a great driver, getting us from place to place easily having intimate knowledge of the shortcuts. We arrived at each place with plenty of time to explore. Thank you!
Had a lovely trip to Fátima and Coimbra with our guide Paul. He was very nice, patient, and accommodating to everyone on the tour. He made sure we were fully sorted for lunch and gave us plenty of time to explore in Fátima without feeling rushed. A really smooth and enjoyable day.
Despite the rain, it was a lovely day. I truly appreciate Cristian, the driver and guide, for his extensive knowledge and excellent language skills. You won’t regret touring with him.
Orlando did a great job of describing the area and cultural aspects of the tour.
Maykel (driver) and Felipe (Guide) were both great. We visited Fatima and then Coimbra and learnt far more from Felipe than we would have done if we had travelled via coach on our own which was our original intention. In addition to all the interesting historical stories, Felipe was very helpful with practical information. He was also very considerate with regard to keeping out of the sun as much as possible and also, mindful of the more frail passengers. It was a wonderful experience.
Kiko was a phenomenal guide. He presented in both English and Spanish but moreover he was extremely personable, very knowledgeable and the kind of individual that you just wanted as a lifelong friend. He gave us the insights to these locations and their history and added an unexpected amount of education to our experience. Full marks to Kiko and our sincere appreciation for his efforts today.
Rui Lacerda was a wonderful tour guide for a day trip to the Douro Valley- funny, insightful, and knowledgeable!
Our Guide was Susana Gomes and she was fabulous, full of energy and made the entire day memorable. Fully recommend to anyone to insist on having her as the guide. LivingTouts is lucky to have such a great representative.
Paul was incredible. He needs a raise.
We chose the Lisbon Small Group to Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré & Óbidos. Our guide, Mario, was very informative and knew the history very well! Great tour, great guide, great day! Thank you Mario.
Paulo was our tour guide and the tour was amazing. Paulo was very informative about historical events, buildings, etc. and provided additional color about cities, etc. as we passed them. Coimbra was more interesting than I expected, as I was most interested in the trip to Fatima. Additionally. Paulo provided additional tips for things to do and see during our stay. He is even the best at navigating between tight spaces with the van. It was impressive! I would book another trip with Paulo and Living Tours.
We had an outstanding experience with Daniel Mota as our private tour guide in Portugal. He took my husband and me on a full-day tour to Fátima and Coimbra, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Daniel was attentive and genuinely focused on making the day enjoyable for us. Throughout the tour, he consistently checked in to see what we wanted to do and ensured the itinerary matched our interests. His flexibility and professionalism made the experience feel truly personalized. He also treated us to a wonderful buffet lunch, which was a thoughtful and much-appreciated touch. Beyond that, Daniel’s knowledge of Portugal’s history and the local areas was impressive—he provided insightful context that made each stop more meaningful. Thanks to Daniel, what could have been just a long day of sightseeing turned into a memorable and enriching experience. We highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, personable, and professional guide in Portugal. Robert & Candace Pate
A truely spiritual experience. The story of Fatima and the children was amazing. We attended the mass in the Cathedral and even though we can’t speak Portuguese, we found it to be an extremely uplifting service. Coimbra is a beautiful city with a palace now used as a university and a lovely and colourful high street.
Nuno of Living Tours was our guide for this private tour. This was THE BEST tour we had while visiting Portugal. Nuno's encyclopedic knowledge of Portuguese history and events about both Fatima and Coimbra, was fascinating. The first day in Portugal with him provided us with extensive background on Portugal's history. That made subsequent tours and visits during our week understandable in a richer context. A superb way to be introduced to not only our two destinations for the day, but to the broader Portugal experience. Thank you Nuno!!
A perfect day .the guide was brilliant and the driver too. We had a lovely meal and the place was full of tourists from all over the world 🌎
Wonderdul. Honestly i just wanted to leave a review on how amazing and kind the guide was to us. I still remember that day to this moment thanks to his meaningful efforts. Mr Orlando was so good at his job that it felt natural. I wanted to give a review in may but i lost the code bar card while packing my stuff to get back home which made me frustrated. I just found today in a bag by chance and im glad i did. Thank you for leaving good memories for me and my mother.
A beautiful day in the history of Portugal. The guide took us inside the city of Fatima and Coimbra, told us everything! I hope to book another trip.
We had a great day! Paul is very experienced guide. We had an opportunity to pray for peace in Ukraine and in the whole world 🙏
We travel in a group of 7 people. Our professional tour guide Susanna provides interesting information on All places that we visited. The Sanctuary of Fatima passes the spiritual atmosphere that took place in 1917. visiting The Chapel in the heart of the current Fatima Sanctuary was unforgettable experience. Then the university of Coimbra. Everything was done in a perfect timeframe
Our guide Susana is very nice and welcoming. We really enjoyed our tour to Fatima and Coimbra. The day was super hot and sunny, Susana offered to tour us around Coimbra by car instead of walking to prevent us from getting a heatstroke. In general, she was really talkative and eager to share with us every details of the places we visit.
An amazing experience. Nuno was fantastic, kind and very thorough. We truly enjoyed every moment. This is a must do moment
Many thanks to Valdemar, a wonderful guide who led us through the magnificent Sanctuary of Fatima and introduced us to the beauty of Coimbra.
We had a great experience in Coimbra and Fátima thanks to our guide Orlando, who brilliantly led the perfectly planned tour, provided thorough an interesting narration along the way. The minivan for small group was comfortable, the trip was pleasant, everything was thought of. We are recomending to chose this tour and gide! Thank you! Two Maras
Excellent tour with an excellent driver.. they are so accommodating and very knowledgeable with the Fatima and all other places… kudos to Helder and Philip
I recently used Valdemar, during my trip to Fatima, and I must say, it was an invaluable resource. The guide is well-structured, covering everything from historical landmarks to hidden gems that only locals know about.
I loved the tour! Very professional guide, we saw all the mentioned atractions and received a lot of information about Fatima, Coimbra amd Portugal in general. Out guide name was Valdemar. Please check hom out!
We went to Fátima with Livingtours. We had an amazing, blessed experience. Christian, our tour guide was very helpful, kind. And the way he told the history of Fátima and Portugal in general was great. We enjoyed every moment of the tour.
Guide José was outstanding. He was informative and flexible on this all day tour. The town of Fátima was much more interesting than Coimbra, which is a busy college town. Walking from the university down to city center (the original plan) was far less interesting than driving around the city (which we did).
I wish we had more time to explore Fatima. Not much time to participate on acrivities. Driver was really good and guide was very acomodating.
We were a party of 8 and we took the private tour to Fatima and Coimbra. It was truly amazing. Our guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. We had such a good time, ate well and were very relaxed. We felt taken care of. Thank you.
The full tour was well planned. Our tour guide Andre Maia was very well informed, sharing lots of historical snippets all throughout the journey. If want to spend more time in Fatima, take the tour without lunch and you can grab a light lunch at nearby restaurants.
We booked an English language tour but it was bilingual Spanish/English, with higher proportion Spanish. After reading earlier reviews, we booked tickets to visit the Coimbra University library. We notified the guide before getting on the tour bus that we had tickets. Rather than assisting us he was adamant it was not possible unless we made our own way back to Porto from Coimbra. Upon arriving in Coimbra, we were on our ticketed time and asked again. We were told ‘no’ again and he would not advise timeframes whenever we asked. After complying, we realised we would have had sufficient time to view the beautiful library. This was extremely disappointing as was his lack of flexibility and assistance. While travelling we have used several other tour companies that we feel would have accommodated us. Check elsewhere before booking.
Jose Luis was our tour guide. He was very informative and pleasant and had good knowledge of the area. He was very patient and lightheaded and overall it was a very enjoyable and pleasant experience My only criticism of this tour was that we were not given enough time in the basilica in fatima. There was alot to see and were only afforded one hour to see everything
It was a very educational tour. Maia did a good job explaining all of the history of both Fátima and Coimbra. He played Fado music.Loved the song at the end.
Marabuto was our wonderful tour guide! I loved every part of the tour and so grateful to have been able to join! I highly recommend.
Our small group Fatima tour was a truly enriching experience. The intimate setting created a solemn atmosphere, perfect for reflection. Our guide, Maia, was exceptional. His deep knowledge of the history and significance of the site enhanced our understanding and appreciation. We were so impressed with the tour that we would definitely book another with this company if we have the opportunity to return to Porto. We highly recommend requesting Maia as your guide.
We had an interesting and relaxing day trip to Fatima and Coimbra. Cristan C. was our tour guide and driver and he had a fantastic knowledge of what he was telling us about the history of Fatima and Coimbra and Portugal in general. Thanks again to him for a great day. Obrigada 🇵🇹🫶🏼
Great trip. Very informative and a great guide that spent time to convert discussions to our language. Lot of history and reviews in Fatima.
I recommend living tours. Everything was amazing. Jose Luis is the best tour guide ever. She was always polite a taking care of the group! Thanks Jose Luis!!!
Alex was fantastic. He is truly kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable- a true historian. We loved the day- thank you for your flexibility with what we needed.
We booked a last minute private tour (it was Freedom Day and the only option that fit our schedule) and it turned out to be a serendipitous decision. It was neat to experience the Sanctuary of Fatima (St Peter’s is the only place I’ve ever been that compares) and Coimbra was beautiful. Our guide Alex Oliveira was awesome. Good energy and conversation throughout the day while still allowing us some rest during the car rides. He even took us to see some off the beaten track sights which were so beautiful. My dad was nervous about taking a private tour (‘I’ll have to interact with the guide too much’) but now I’m pretty sure he’s ready to adopt Alex. Thanks for spending your Freedom Day showing this American father/daughter team a wonderful day before starting our Camino!
We had this tour booked for us and had no idea what to expect. It’s a big day with a 2hour drive to get to Fatima. Our guide, Valdgour, was fantastic, very informative and fun! Great day & would recommend!
We had a terrific private tour with our driver/ guide Goncalo. He was extremely attentive throughout the day and very knowledgeable and personable. Everything about Fatima and Coimbra was clearly explained with lots of background information and insights. We enjoyed his pleasant company and his considerate approachable manner. Lunch was delicious with a variety of options served in lovely surroundings. The vehicle was comfortable and roomy. We look forward to more trips with Living Tours! Goncalo was a great ambassador for the agency and was very experienced and friendly. He made the trip very special.
Very enjoyable trip, our guide Tiago & driver Silvino were excellent hosts throughout. Both combined to make our trip a memorable one.
Had a wonderful day visiting Fatima and Coimbra. Our guide Valdemar was excellent and well knowledged. He made our day an unforgettable experience.
My husband and I took this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Isabel was very knowledgeable and spoke great English. She played really good music to relax to on the way home. Our driver Antonio was excellent also and we were very comfortable in his bus. He was a safe driver and did not go too fast, Thank you both❤️
Everything was well organised with stop in Coimbra and Fatima in a small van inclusive lunch in Fatima.
Mass at Fatima was truly a wonderful experience. Viewing the Basilica and the the personal tour of the newer church and chapel were great. We had a vey nice lunch and our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
