Douro Valley Private Day Trip Including Boat Ride & Wine Tasting

We had a full day of nearly 9 hours with our knowledgeable guide and driver, Gustavo. He was an excellent communicator, imparted history, political insights and current affairs opinions with a great tour of Douro valley, visited two wineries, including a memorable wine tasting in a family owned vineyard and a lovely lunch in a family run, village restaurant. Gustavo was welcomed everywhere warmly, we experienced the real Portugal. A memorable day, high quality and authentic, will recall happily as we sip our port, back home in Ireland.

From prior to arriving to Portugal to the end of the tour, I had a phenomenal experience. The team reached out to me in advance to discuss if there were any accommodations and to provide in depth details to prepare me for my trip. During our initial meeting, Rui and his partner were very kind and friendly. During each stop, he was very knowledgeable about the history and I learned so much from them. We made a few stops to local shops for unique trinkets and enjoy an amazing lunch! The view of Douro Valley did not disappoint and the wine tour with river boat ride was spectacular. The day ended in pouring rain on the way back to Porto but the entire time I felt extremely safe and comfortable during transit as well as navigating the cities with them as my guide. I highly recommend booking them.

Orlando was our guide and he was simply the best guide we've had on any tour. Very knowledgable, planned a great itinerary, knew excellent spots for photos and selected a small family run winery for our tasting. He has a great sense of humor and is a great conversationalist. Can't recommend him enough and having a private tour for our Duoro Valley day trip.

Gustavo was our driver and guide …if you can please request him if you like a person who loves wine …after about 15 min of talking with us, knowing a little more who we are ,planned the PERFECT day …from start at 9 am till finished at 5pm it was non stop knowledge ,of wines region and all things of Portugal ..we asked to go to small more unknown places and he found them for us …lunch at an amazing restaurant on top Of the vineyards. I give it all 5 stars out of 5

Some travel experiences simply exceed every expectation — this was one of them. Our private Douro Valley day trip was nothing short of magical, from the moment we wound our way into those terraced hillsides until the last sip of wine on the boat ride back. The scenery alone is worth the trip. The Douro Valley is one of those places that makes you stop mid-sentence because words just fall short. The two estates we visited couldn’t have been more perfectly paired. The first carried the weight of history in the most beautiful way — deep roots, a reverence for traditional winemaking, and the sense that every bottle produced there is the result of generations of devotion to the craft. The second was larger and nothing short of impressive — a breathtaking property that commands your attention the moment you arrive. Both estates welcomed us with genuinely accommodating staff and offered wine and port selections that were outstanding. These are gorgeous pieces of land with real soul. Lunch was a complete delight — an eclectic, tucked-away spot we never would have stumbled upon without our guide, and exactly the kind of local gem that makes travel feel like an inside secret. And then there’s our guide. Knowledgeable, warm, enthusiastic, and genuinely thoughtful about making the day feel personal rather than scripted — he made everything better. He was so wonderful, in fact, that we immediately hired him the following day for a city tour of Porto. That says everything. If you’re considering this experience, stop considering and just book it. You’ll want to go back before the day is even over.

We had an exceptional experience with Anselmo. The day was perfectly curated with stops for stunning photos at miradouros, a scenic boat ride, an informative and beautiful visit to a quinta vineyard with port tastings and a fabulous three course lunch paired with wine and port at another stunning quinta overlooking the Douro. Anselmo is very knowledgeable about all aspects of the Douro and he told us important facts and stories along the way. Even more noteworthy however was Anselmo’s thoughtfulness- he brought and held an umbrella for us in the rain, took pictures for us and even brought gluten free pasteis for my husband so he could experience this pairing with port. It was as if you spent a day with family friend. We cannot more highly recommend this tour with Anselmo!

Anselmo was the perfect host! We tasked him with planning our day in the Douro Valley and we are so glad we did . His knowledge of the valley and his expertise in the wines of the region did not disappoint. The ‘scenic route’ was the perfect choice allowing for a quaint village coffee stop and he even surprised us with local pastries ! Thank you Amselmo for treating us to a wonderful day !

Our guide was Luis and he went above and beyond to make our day a memorable experience. He checked in a few days before regarding pick up location and dietary requirements. Promptly arrived at the arranged time and was extremely welcoming. Clean comfortable car with plenty of room for our group of four. Excellent English great banter and very knowledgeable and passionate about Porto and the Douro Valley. The highlight of the day was our picnic lunch in a private room over looking the winery. Such a perfect day from start to finish. Thank you Luis for a awesome time

This was a lovely day out from Porto. There were no issues with being picked up from our hotel. Teresa is incredibly friendly and goes over and above to ensure you have an excellent experience in the Douro. It was our anniversary and she gave amazing recommendations for lunch spots. The winery tour and tasting was superb fun. The boat ride down the Douro was exceptionally beautiful. We cannot thank Teresa enough for such an excellent day and experience.

Our guide, Luis, was fantastic & had a great deal of knowledge. As 4 adults in our 50’s (early), we would recommend this trip without hesitation.

Anselmo gave us a lovely day tour of the Doura Valley. About a 90 minute drive from Porto in a comfortable car, we then enjoyed about an hour (out and back) on a riverboat through the river valley of the wine region. Our guide gave us lots of interesting history and information. We then went to a lovely local winery to learn more about port and then went to a restaurant/hotel/winery for a beautiful lunch and more wine tasting. It was a very pleasant day and Anselmo was a fun and knowledgeable guide!

We had an absolutely amazing experience touring the Douro Valley with our guide Orlando. We were picked up from our hotel, and we first went to the quaint and charming Pinhao, then took a river cruise and ate lunch. After that, we stopped in Provesende and toured the tiny village. We then had a wine tasting at Quinto do Beijo, followed by a trip to Amarante, where we saw the sights before eating again and heading back to Porto. Orlando was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Every part of the tour was incredible. It was definitely the highlight of our trip, and I would highly recommend it!!

Our group of 4 enjoyed a lovely Day with Gustavo exploring the Duoro Valley. He was right on time picking us up in his new Mercedes wagon. He is an area native and knowledgeable on all points of Portugals history and wine making. Everywhere we went he had friends and colleagues that took good care of us. I believe he designed this day in the Duoro for all of the guides that offer the tour. Gustavo was fun and interesting and congenial spend a day touring this beautiful winemaking region. .

My wife and I had a fantastic day with Gustavo touring the Duoro Valley from Porto. He picked us up on time from our hotel in a late model Mercedes which was immaculately clean and extremely comfortable. His knowledge of the area and of Portuguese history and culture made our conversation as easy as talking to a friend, which now Gustavo is. We mentioned our interest in tasting dry wines and we visited two wineries with tasty offerings of both dry and sweet. He also stopped off at several view points to showcase the valley. We took great interest in watching a river cruise ship pass through a very large lock, a rise of perhaps 10 meters or more. We stopped at a lovely family owned restaurant for lunch and it was so good! We had the goatling with rice for two people and it fed us all. Gustavo’s wine recommendation was perfect! It was a full day of pleasant conversation and we learned a lot about the Douro and Portugal. Thanks, Gustavo! I will recommend him to everyone I know coming to Porto.

Gustavo is very knowledgeable and we learned a lot on this trip. The scenery was breathtaking, and Gustavo showed us local places where the tour buses don't stop. Since surprisingly, there was no traffic on the way back to Porto and we arrived earlier than we had anticipated, Gustavo drove us around Porto and showed us some sights that we had not been to before. Overall we are very happy with Gustavo and our tour.

We did a private tour of the Douro valley. Our guide Rui Pestana was great, very informative and just fun to talk with. He was born in Porto and grew up both there and in the Douro valley so he knew lots of interesting history. Our day was relaxing and not rushed. We started with some sightseeing by car, took an hour long boat ride on the beautiful river (the boat had about 20 people on board and was less than half full), we had an amazing lunch at a place we never would have found on our own, and did a wine tour and tasting at a charming family run winery. Sure we could have packed in more stuff to see in a day but we never felt rushed, we're on vacation and relaxing was the way to go!

Our tour with Orlando was nothing short of amazing! We laughed all day and his love for the area was very apparent through his knowledge and stories. He picked us up right on time, and his van was very tidy. I also really appreciate how much caution he took as he drove through the valley as many other drivers were being reckless. The wine tour was great and the place he selected for lunch was top tier with a perfect view of the valley. And to top it off, he has an eye for great photos. The pictures he captured are some of my favorite from our entire trip. If you’re on the fence about booking this tour, DO IT! Thank you Orlando for such an unforgettable experience!!

We had a wonderful authentic experience, a full day out in Duoro Valley with Anselmo. He's very knowledgeable and personable, he introduced us to extra dry white port and portotonics, among so many other things. We visited a small local town, where we saw them making port, of course we had to try some farmers port, along with delicious Pasel de Nata. We went to two port wineries and had a lovely delicious lunch, with a Duoro Valley view. Anselmo is experienced and engaging, we found out later on vacation, just how important a seasoned tour guide is, makes a world of difference. A perfect day!!!!!!

What can I say about Gustavo! He was the ultimate professional, AND a phenomenal personality! He’s extremely knowledgable of the region and has many generations of family history in the area. While we laid out an itinerary we found him to be very flexible; several times taking detours that ended up being so much fun! And he’s such a conversationalist!! We talked for hours as we learned about the Douro Valley! We’d call him again next time we visit just to learn more about his knowledge of wine and food! Thank you Gustavo for such a wonderful day!

We would like to thank Andre' for a perfect day. The Duoro valley is amazing and Andre' is not only a native but extremely knowledgeable about the area and its history. We truly enjoyed our day with the boat ride and of course the wine tasting! We highly recommend him!

We are a family of 4 and had a fantastic day out in the Douro Valley with André. The highlights of the tour were the viewing stops, breath-taking views, little cafes, restaurants and bars we went into plus the excellent choice of bespoke vineyard we visited for port tasting. André is very knowledgeable and passionate about his home territory, great information and good rapport. Even the small local village we went to had the most amazing church. So impressive. Big shout out for the Quinta do Tedo port tour, personal walk-through and very enjoyable. River tour another great event and so pretty to see views grom the river on a traditional boat. Also great to have pick up and drop off at rental apartment. Full day but well worth it and very memorable.

A brilliant trip including wine tasting a trip on the Douro river and a lovely lunch with a great guide and driver, Ana and Troupe both absolutely brilliant a bit like the red and white wine we had on the trip . 10 out of 10 it was an early start but well worth it .

We were 2 couples who joined Gustavo for the most spectacular trip through the Douro valley. Gustavo shared scenic landscapes through backroads and provided exclusive access to rural chic wineries. We stopped at a couple of vineyards where we sampled some incredible port wines in front of a breathtaking view of the Douro valley - where we would have gladly stayed the rest of the day. On top of all that Gustavo took us for lunch at restaurant for some incredible local cuisine. We would highly recommend this tour. Gustavo is knowledgeable and passionate and was flexible to accommodate any special requests.

My husband and I had the most spectacular Sunday in the Douro Valley with Anselmo as our guide. He was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible in catering to our likes and dislikes. We chose to do a drive on a scenic route instead of the boat ride, and Anselmo showed us some of the best spots in the Douro Valley. We got some nice photos too! He took us to two estates, I believe to be among the best in the Valley, and we got a personal tour as well as a taste of the best wines and port. We would definitely recommend Anselmo as a guide. He made the whole experience very enjoyable!

Not everyone in our family was excited about an all day driving tour but were they glad the went! Gustavo is so knowledgeable and a pleasure to be with. We learned so much about Porto and Douro valley. Had the best meal of our entire trip with Gustavo and discovered new wines and local flavors. Anselmo was an amazing guide. He knew all the roads less traveled and took us to breathtaking areas with views like I have never seen. Our family recently went on a private tour of the Douro Valley with Anselmo. It was a wonderful tour! Anselmo was friendly, very knowledgeable, accommodating to our requests, great with our two kids (4 and 14), and very easy to spend the day with. He took us to some beautiful spots to sample port, see amazing views, go on a boat ride, and have lunch over-looking the valley. We all agreed it was the highlight of our trip, and we'd highly recommend Anselmo as a tour guide!

Our group absolutely loved our visit in the Douro Valley. All communications with Anselmo were clear, timely and helpful. He went the extra mile to accommodate our needs, including arranging for a change in date (for a sunny day - thanks for the great couple we joined) and even offering a bonus visit and extra time visiting; it was outstanding. Anselmo is an excellent driver. The vehicle (a van) was perfect for our group; very comfortable. Anselmo shared his knowledge of the region, of wineries, of history with passion and humour. We booked a tour with Gustavo to the Doura wine region and I can honestly say it was fantastic from start to finish…. Gustavo was very good at sharing lots of information with us and knows the best spots to take you… we also stopped for a fabulous lunch and most of the day we were away from the main tourist haunts, surrounded by incredible scenery and tasting wonderful wines… Gustavo definitely went out of his way to ensure we had the best time… so what’s not to like! Gustavo is an excellent private guide. We went right through the Douro Valley mainly on roads off the beaten track. Gustavo is a wealth of knowledge about the history and the ways of wine production. Our stops where informative and the tastings well considered. Lunch was a revelation and included a special off menu surprise made to Gustavo's order! The restaurant was a small family run operation with an outstanding wine list. Our last tasting was at a friends of Gustavo's and the ports were sublime. I thoroughly recommend a trip with Gustavo and you will finish enriched with the sights and flavours of the valley and a good knowledge of all thing Port.

André was excellent. Punctual, great not only of the area, but of the wines and port. Our stops were perfect. Snack and coffee at cafe. He ensured to have all of our stops well planned. This was our first adventure using with locals, we would do again.
