This was essentially a guideless guided tour. The guide drove me to the stops on the itinerary, left me to do my thing, and asked me to WhatsApp him when I was ready to be picked up and move to the next stop. Lovely guy, a safe driver, and happy for me to explore at my own pace. And I guess for the info and insights, that's what Google is for. Just make sure you have data coverage.

You will have free time to visit Port Louis Waterfront and the Le Caudan Waterfront shopping complex. The bustling Port Louis Waterfront offers exciting shopping and entertainment venues intermingle with world-class hotels and restaurants overlooking the Port Louis Harbor. The waterfront area has become an essential actor of the vivid tourism and cultural life in Mauritius. The craft market in particular is a hive of activity with wonderful ambiance where you are sure to find a lot of souvenirs for the family back home. Another place to visit is the Port Louis central market – the market is a fun place to visit and the ideal place to find many local made products, textiles, Mauritian spices, fruits and many souvenirs for very cheap prices. On your free time you can stroll the city streets and see several sightseeing attractions such as: The Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, the main city Mosque, Chinatown, the Supreme Court house, the 18th century Barracks and the Natural History Museum (free entry). Fort Adelaide (also known as La Citadelle) was built in a very strategic location on higher lands of Port Louis at 240 feet above sea level. The construction of Fort Adelaide started on 1832 and completed after almost ten years. Fort Adelaide offers a vast panorama on Port-Louis and its harbour. The British built this fortress in fear of a civil war from the remaining French settlers on the island and also for the purpose of guarding the harbor against enemy attacks. A ride uphill to Fort Adelaide, guarantee breathtaking view of Port Louis and of the mountain range surrounding Port Louis.
Mauritius National Botanical Garden. The botanical garden is home to an incredible variety of tropical plants, many of them indigenous. The Botanical Garden is one of the most visited sights in Mauritius. It was first opened as a private garden by the French governor of Mauritius nearly 300 years ago. The botanical garden stretches over endless acres of land and it can take you more than a week to cover the whole garden. The Botanical Garden is populated with more than 650 varieties of plants among which are the famous Baobabs, the palmier bouteille, the ineluctable giant water lilies, dozens of medicinal plants, 85 different varieties of palms, a big spice garden and many more. As part of the tour, you will get to explore the Botanical garden and have a taste of their beauty.
Sugar estate and Museum. The Sugar estate and Museum located at the North West of Mauritius stretches over 5000 square meters. In the estate you will discover the profound effect and the key part of sugar in the history and identity of Mauritius. You will also hear local sugar tales and stories on sugar in Mauritius and on its importance. As part of the sugar estate tour you can see a selection of panorama videos and films on many sugar related subjects. Also, you will have the opportunity to shop at the estate’s boutique. Be sure not to miss this great opportunity to enjoy the tastes and purchase unique-local made special sugars, and also the very famous local made Mauritian rum!
About the Red Church at Cap Malheureux One of the most renowned churches in Mauritius is the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel, a Roman Catholic Church famous for its vivid red roof against the bright turquoise sea and azure sky. Located ten minutes from Grand Bay is the small fishing village of Cap Malheureux. It translates to “Unfortunate/Unhappy Cape”, due to the numerous ships, which floundered there in the past. The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is famous for its lovely red roof, which attracts many curious passers-by and offers a picturesque background for worthy snapshots. This simple chapel was founded in 1938 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is situated ideally at the very northern point of Mauritius, offering breathtaking views of the five northern islets, including Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin). This Roman Catholic Church draws in a lot of visitors as well as worshippers. On Sunday mornings, many tourists can be found joining the mass. The church, as well as the beach behind the church is a popular spot for newlyweds to have their pictures taken- so it is not uncommon to run into couples here. The beach behind allows you to soak up the sun and enjoy the view, while the kids can play in the white sand and discover aquatic life in the rock pools. Fishermen are also frequently docking, with a fresh catch.

We booked the north island Mauritius's tour it was great we would definitely recommend it to anyone great drivers we were in two separate cars eight people we went on the 12th of September 2026 couldn’t fault anything our drivers was Paul and diva thanks guys for a great day
I would recommend this tour - it was very thorough and interesting, covering the highlights of the north of the island: Port Louis, the Citadelle (from which you get unique views of the city), the tea factory, the best beaches of Grand Baie, the unique red-roofed church at Cap Malheureyx, the sugar museum and factory (allow plenty of time for this - it also covers some of the fascinating history of the island, as well as sugar making and testing/ rum tasting), and the very impressive Botanical gardens. My guide, Nasser, was absolutely excellent: very knowledgeable about the island, patient and assiduous in ensuring that I saw what I was interested and was comfortable.
This was a brilliant day out. Paul was an amazing guide and very safe driver. He gave us lots of interesting information on the history of Mauritius. Showed us the local makers in Port Louis as well as the tourist areas. The fort was also great. Next stop was the sugar factory and rum tasting which was also very interesting and the rum good. Unfortunately it rained while we were at the botanical gardens but it was still very interesting and we saw the giant tortoise. This was a brilliant day out. Thank you Paul.
I had a wonderful North Tour in Mauritius with Deva, and I am extremely happy with the whole experience. From the beginning, he was very professional, punctual, friendly, and easy to communicate with. He made me feel comfortable straight away and took very good care of me during the entire day. The tour was very well organized, but also flexible, which I really appreciated. Deva showed me beautiful places in the north of Mauritius, gave me time to enjoy each stop, and never made me feel rushed. He also shared useful local information and made the experience feel more personal, not just like a normal transfer or basic tour. His driving was safe and smooth, the vehicle was comfortable, and he was always attentive to what I needed. What I liked the most is that he genuinely wanted me to enjoy Mauritius and have a memorable day. He was patient, helpful, respectful, and always smiling. I can honestly say that Deva is not only a good driver, but also a very reliable and professional person to work with. Any travel company, agency, or customer would be lucky to work with him because he represents Mauritius in a very positive way and gives excellent service from start to finish. Thank you, Deva, for making my North Tour such a beautiful experience. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a trusted, professional, and friendly driver/guide in Mauritius.
Sameer did an outstanding job. His vast knowledge of his country, culture, and history creates a meaningful experience.
Excellent tour with our wonderful guide, Dinesh. He was knowledgeable and entertaining, and showed us how lovely and interesting Mauritius is. We learned a lot about the history and the people of Mauritius. We will certainly recommend him as a guide to any of our friends who might be contemplating a trip to Mauritius.
First class trip with Jean who took great care of us. He showed all the sights with excellent advice on taking a guide at the Botanical Gardens and where to have lunch
This was a private guided tour, and the driver was called Ridwaan. I was the only passenger and he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Sights included Cap Malheureux (Catholic Church) which is situated on the roadside on the bay and has been well photographed over the years. 15 mins We went here first because of the traffic. Then to Port Louis Fort for about 30 mins (not much in here but ok for photos) then the harbour - this was ok, very busy and some historic value in some of the buildings and the colourful market. I didn’t spend the whole allotted time here, I was there for history not shopping. Then off to the Mauritius National Botanical Gardens - this was beautiful and I spend 1 hour and 45 mins here (pay to get in - about £5 and a guide for about £2.50) Unfortunately I got caught in a heavy downpour but the driver gave me a large umbrella but couldn’t move around much so took shelter in one of the many huts. The driver then took me for lunch to a local restaurant and it was good quality and cheap enough. The popular beer in Mauritius is Phoenix Then last and definitely not least was a visit to the Sugarcane Museum (L’aventure De Sucre) which, for me, was the highlight of the tour. It costs about £19 admission but is worth every penny. Again you can have a guide but I chose to go round myself without the wait. This place is no longer in production but it’s an excellent museum. It’s packed with both sugarcane and Mauritian history and is well presented and very interesting. At the end there is a bar with free Rum tasting (with your receipt-so keep it!) The driver stayed in the car for the whole duration so no need to worry about being picked up again. Great day and would Recommend it although I do like to be in a group so it was strange having the one on one tour.
We had a lovely day with our guide Farad. We visited the citadel and craft and general market in Port Louis. Farad was always on hand to carry our shopping and very informative. I loved the umbrellas which apparently are changed each month and are currently orange for Diwali. We did tea tasting and then on to Grand Baie at the very tip of the island and finally to the Pampelmousses botanical gardens. We had a really nice time
I enjoyed visiting the Mauritius Umbrella. I had an amazing lunch at the pier. It was a great experience. You Must go to Laozhao hot pot.
Fabulous guide who couldn't do enough to ensure our day was memorable. John knew the island well gave us plenty of options on how to spend our time.
This was a fun tour with the highlights of the north: the Caudan waterfront, the Sikh temple, the red roof Catholic church, the fortress and the botanical garden. The tour was very interesting, but I understand that the southwest is even more so. Unfortunately that tour was blown away by the cyclone and there was no more time to explore. Our guide, Barbur, was very knowledgeable about the history of the island. We would have been happy to go with him again on the other tour that the weather made impossible.
The driver was very very helpful. Described the history and acted as an escort around every location. A beutiful day out.
We did the tour of the North of Mauritius with Pradeep. He told us a lot about the people, the area and the history of the places we drove past. It was raining in the morning so he changed the schedule to accommodate the weather and do the outdoor activities later. At the market in Port Louis Pradeep gave us good advice as to how to bargain with vendors and consequently saved us a lot of money. He was very attentive to us and waited patiently while we were in the gardens and in the Aventure l'sucre. He even took us to a Tamil temple which was not on the schedule for the day. Pradeep was amicable and knowledgeable. We had a lovely day.
Great driver, Firhan, took us everywhere we wanted to go and we were not rushed at all... he took us to a lovely cafe for lunch and we spent around 9 hours in all visiting various sights, taking pictures and shopping. Well worth booking
Our North Day Trip From Sugar Beach Hotel (Flic en Flac) - The Fort 0900-1000 From The Fort - Port Louis Mall/Harbour 1015-1030 Free From Harbour - Sugar Museum 1145-1215 575 rupees (Approx £10) each From Sugar Museum - Lunch (L’Ocean) 1355-1400 1250 rupees (Approx £25) 1 main course, little of wine and 2 bottles of water each From Lunch - Botanical Gardens 1500-1600 200 rupees (Approx £4) then paid 75 rupees for at our guide (Approx £2), it was worth it - although it got sold as a private tour and we ended up getting merged with a German group of 4 From Botanical - Norte-Dame Auxilitrice de Cap Malheureix (Catholic Church) 1600-1630 Free From Church - Back to Sugar Beach Hotel 1800 Have written the above times / pride - as it maybe helpful to future passengers, we were by no means rushed, and the day was around our times, and we could have had less or longer in each place if needed/we wanted. We did somehow manage to miss the market at the port, but there was plenty to do and view the new malls/had a drink around the harbour etc (you do need to negotiate if buying items - something I don’t like doing, but it was necessary)! Lunch was in a clean, modern environment - based around fresh seafood with rice, chips and salad. There are meat options should you not like that. The car we had was a Toyota Salon, clean and nicely cooled - a very hot and humid day, so that was great after walking around in the heat. Handy to get yourself set up to be able to WhatsApp the driver, to allow flexibility/communication during the day - we did this. We traveled as myself (29), my wife 23, my Mother (51) and Grandmother in law (79), good for all ages - perhaps not so much for little ones (may get bored) or those who struggle walking distances (Approx 4.6 miles - if the iwatch is too be believed). Easy to book, and Ridwaan will contact you as soon as you book via WhatsApp, and is available throughout. Very happy with the service, and our experience of the North of Mauritius.
Beautiful trip visiting the north of the island with Paul, who was very kind, helpful, and thoughtful. He accommodated our requests despite them being a bit outside the planned activity.
It was a very nice day. Our guide fulfilled all our wishes and was very nice and committed. The communication was online since we hardly speak English. He did a great job. Many thanks and best regards, Bernd and Monika😘
Successful, interesting, and personal excursion! We were picked up at the hotel on time, our driver told us many interesting things about the island, and accommodated our wishes! Definitely recommended!
For this day of sightseeing, we were accompanied by Kavish, who helped us discover the different places included in this excursion. His knowledge of the island was a major asset for learning more about life in Mauritius and about the different places seen/visited, and his friendliness made this day even more pleasant. We thank him again! The route allows you to discover the points of interest in the north of the island, such as Fort Adelaide and its magnificent view of Port Louis, the botanical garden and its impressive diversity of plants, the church of Cap Malheureux, L'Aventure du Sucre, which allows you to better understand the history of the island, and the Port Louis market to bring back some souvenirs to France. At each of these places, Kavish knew how to accompany and advise us when necessary, but also let us enjoy ourselves as a couple, a perfect balance!
Once again, I unfortunately booked a guided tour of Port Louis, we have a very friendly taxi driver, but by no means, a guide. apart from visiting the citadel and the market downtown. Very poor visit, total disappointment. I will no longer book by your services, in view of the amounts paid, unjustified.
Unlimited recommended tour of the beautiful north. Our driver Rakesh was friendly and helpful, but too reserved for our taste with his explanations. Since we had the southern tour with the same company before, we know that there are also drivers there who are also great guides and happy to be able to inform about the history, culture and cuisine of their country. Despite small limitation this time, still a great experience with unbeatable value for money! Absolutely serious, punctual and reliable.
We had a very nice day. Were only in Port Louis at the port with shops. Then we visited the market hall and the fortress. Where we had a great view over the city. Afterwards we went to the sugar factory with tasting. At our request, our driver drove us to the supermarket... because the same one was much cheaper than in the sugar factory. The botanical garden was unfortunately closed that day. We were very happy with our driver. He told us a lot about the country, responded to our wishes. And we felt safe on the car ride. Can highly recommend. We had a very
A great day with Nishal as guide. Lots of explanation and Nishal is very pedagogue in comments We had a very nice day
Very complete visit, Paul our very friendly and connoisseur guide gave us very good explanations on the various points visited as well as on the whole island. Thanks to him
Our tour was great, the service and the ride were very pleasant. Shiva was a great guide and was able to tell us about all places and questions at any time. We liked the botanical garden the most. Thank you for this day!
Super nice driver Ridwan. Driven us everywhere and even small extra wishes were no problem! We were a little disappointed with the Batani Garden, but may have simply been due to the season. Port Luise is definitely worth a visit and there especially the market to shop for souvenirs.
