Itinerary
Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rogue, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years, they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. Your guide will return you to your hotel or guesthouse.
The most notorious of the 189 known interrogation centers in Cambodia was S-21, housed in a former school and now called Tuol Sleng for the hill on which it stands. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were detained, tortured there, often in primitive brick cells built in former classrooms.

This tour was a very meaningful and insightful experience. Our guide Ran was amazing. His vast knowledge of Cambodian history and ability to explain this clearly made all the difference. We were also very touched by Ran choosing to share his own story with us. Thank you Ran for making this tour such a memorable experience for us.
This could be quite an emotional experience but you have to take it as an historical period that the country has recovered from but will never forget. Our guide spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about dates and events, I would recommend it as a very interesting tour.
Ran was our guide. Very informative tour. Learned alot, much more than you would thru a textbook. Highly recommend.
An experience that leaves you feeling sombre and deeply saddened, but also gives you a powerful insight into the scale and brutality of the Khmer Rouge genocide. Visiting both sites together makes the experience particularly meaningful: Tuol Sleng (S-21) provides a harrowing insight into the machinery of imprisonment, interrogation and torture (best visited first), while the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek shows the horrifying fate of many of those who passed through it. Together, they put the human cost of Cambodia's history into stark perspective. Transport between the sites is easily arranged using Grab, making it straightforward to visit independently rather than as part of a tour. If you do go independently, I would strongly recommend hiring the audio guides. They are exceptionally clear, informative and easy to follow, with numbered stops corresponding to the locations around each site. Being able to pause and move at your own pace also gives you some space to take in what you are seeing. A guide, however, can offer a more personal perspective and provide additional historical context that you won't necessarily get from the audio guide. Allow plenty of time rather than trying to rush through both locations. This isn't really an attraction to be ticked off a sightseeing list; it is an experience that benefits from being approached slowly and respectfully. Some of the material is understandably difficult to hear and see, and the atmosphere at both sites is very sombre. Although August can be hot and humid, going early in the morning is worthwhile, both to avoid the worst of the heat and to experience the sites before they become busy. Take water, wear comfortable footwear and be prepared for the visit to be emotionally draining. Perhaps the most important reason to visit is that the experience isn't simply about confronting Cambodia's darkest period. Seeing the evidence of what happened, while also seeing how Cambodia has rebuilt itself, provides a striking reminder of the resilience of people and the importance of remembering what happened. You leave feeling sombre, but also with a greater appreciation for Cambodia's present and its hopes for the future.
Great tour and history, showed every part of cambodias history and even met with last survivor that was in the camp
The guide was absolutely amazing!!! Not only was the tour wonderful, but his personal stories of the genocide made it compelling! Truly humbled by the people's experience and their accepting nature in the pursuit for peace for their families moving forward x x x x
Our guide , Ran ,was extremely knowledgeable. He has a very personal and first hand connection to this terrible time in Cambodia's history , I won't spoil it by saying anything. Ran also spoke great English. While a harrowing experience , its one that is necessary to know. A great value half day tour. Recommended.
It was a good tour. Ran our guide was very informative and he new the history, dates and explained it clearly. Highly recommend this tour
Ran was awesome! He taught us so much about not only his personal experiences throughout the time but also a very detailed account of what happened generally. He had so much knowledge on dates, events and people and answered every question we had. I absolutely recommend doing the tour with him :)
Our guide was fantastic. The knowledge and lived stories he told us were priceless. Please book a tour with a guide and not using the audio guide - a real guide with personal stories made the trip. Thank you
Excellent, informative and comprehensive tour guided by Ran. A deep and thorough dive into Cambodian history with focus on this terrible period .
Highly recommend this tour! Ran was friendly and knowledgeable, telling stories from his personal experience of his family being affected by the Pol Pot regime and growing up in Cambodia. Book this
Highly recommend requesting Ran as your tour guide! He lived the Khmer Rouge as a little boy and could tell us what things were like firsthand in Cambodia during the dark time. He was so knowledgeable and we are glad we hired him for the tour vs doing the museums on our own so that we could learn more. The driver, Huot, also picked up/ dropped off right at the door of our hotel and offered cold waters during the drive.
Amazing experience!!! My guide Ran was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable and brave for sharing his story with us. Highly recommend the tour as you get personalized stories and all the transport is planned. Love that they offer an afternoon time slot!!
We had a great 1/2 day tour with our guide, Ran. I knew very little about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge regime. Ran not only shared his personal family story, but explained how this brutal period came about from beginning to end. Although it was a somber and sobering experience, we also learned how that time period shaped Cambodians into modern day life. Travel is as much about education as it is about having fun. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn about this era of Cambodian history.
The guide was really knowledgeable and used his own experience of the time to really hit home on such a tragic moment in history.
The private car transfer was smooth and reassuring — punctual, comfortable, and stress-free to navigate between sites. A small but genuinely appreciated touch: cold drinking water was provided throughout, which matters enormously under the Phnom Penh sun. That said, the allocated time at each site felt rushed. Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng are not places you should hurry through — the weight of what happened there demands more than a glance. I strongly recommend renting the audio guide independently at your own expense, which is very affordable on-site, and negotiating with for a personal longer stay especially at S-21. The tour earns its five stars for logistics; the depth of the experience, you'll have to carve out yourself. Come prepared — emotionally as much as practically.
An excellent if sombre and moving morning with Ran. A knowledgeable and engaging guide, sadly with some lived experience to draw upon. His unflinching stories brought this horrific past into focus. Thoroughly recommended.
It was very moving (at times it was a bit much information) and hearing it from a survivor made it even more emotional. They collected us on time and returned us to our hotel. The van air-condition worked well even in the heatwave we had :) Would not recommend for young children. Doing with a guide like this was much better than just hiring an audioguide.
Very worthwhile but sobering tour of the turmoil and genocide in Cambodia, perpetrated by Pol Pot. Our excellent guide Ran, told the story from somebody who grew up in those dark days. Highly recommend this tour to understand how the despot Pol Pot ruled in Cambodia in the late 70’s .
The pickup was convenient and in an air conditioned van. The tour guide Nin was very knowledgeable, but more notably she was extremely helpful when I experienced symptoms of heat exhaustion, bringing water and finding me air conditioning. (Be advised this tour is entirely open air with some shade.)
We booked a tour thru Viator for 15 people was an easy process and our tour guide and bus arrived on time and Mr Ruoen was our guide. He was excellent he made the tour, very informative and emotional at the same time he told us the story from his heart and from his experiences. Its a tour not for the faint hearted but something visitors must do highly recommend the tour and Mr Ruoen.
The Tour provides plenty of time at both the Killing Fields and Genocide Prison. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and able to provide personal reflection from his own families suffering. Our driver DaRa couldn’t have been more helpful with regular bottles of cold water. Very educational, emotional and good value. Take cash for the entrance fees.
We had an excellent tour today with Ran as our guide. He gave us a lot of history and context about the regime both before and during our visits to both the killing field and the genocide museum, as well as spoke about his personal experiences. It is quite a heavy and sobering experience but important to understand and learn from.
This was an incredible tour! The tour guide was so friendly, knowledgeable and engaging. He did a great job telling the history of Pol Pot and including his own history as well. This was a must see experience, I am very grateful to the tour guide and driver. Very comfortable bus with AC and cold water available.
I had such an incredible experience with this tour! Our guide and driver were amazing. Our guide was so kind and so informative, I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Phnom Penh. There was always water available and the guides own story telling was amazing and touching.
What an amazing four hours learning about what happened at these two sites and how the political story allowed it to happen. It was all made real to us by our guide Nin who, with very good English, spoke slowly and clearly and gradually revealed the horrors. We felt that although we heard accounts of a horrifying nature it is important that these events are known about to prevent them happening in the future. The Cambodian people have made the Killing Fields and S21 into tranquil and respectful places. Thank you Nin and your driver for making us understand.
It was an emotional and insightful experience. Net was very informative and shared experiences from his own life and his parents, who lived through these times.
This tour was educational but sobering. Our guide, Ram, told the story of the terrible events in an interesting and measured way. We felt he presented the facts and the emotion they cause in an appropriate way. We’d like to thank Ram and our driver, Dara, for showing us this important piece of history.
We had an excellent guide on this trip very helpful and knowledgeable. Picked up punctually and transported in a comfortable vehicle .Hard not to become imotional when hearing about this atrocity .
Very interesting tour. The guide was very good, explained everything very clearly and happy to answer any of our questions. The length of tour was about right.
The tour was fantastic. I highly recommend Hout and doing this. Hout was our tour guide. The guided tour was informative and interesting. Such a thorough historical account of the background of the killing fields and the foul sleng genocide museum tour.
Our guide was very prompt in picking us up at our hotel. His name is. Makara. I highly recommend him. He was extremely knowledgeable and had a strong command of the English language.
Please be respectful when taking photos. It's not a theme park. Too many people treating like a tourist attraction.
Cannot remember our guides name but we went on the tour on 02/06 in the afternoon. Our guide was excellent and provided lots of information as to what has happened to his family and the people of Cambodia. Would definitely recommend.
This is a trip that one shouldn't have to take and although difficult and heartbreaking it is essential. Our guide Makara was so knowledgeable, not only about the killing fields but also about the history of Cambodia. We came away with a better comprehension of the country.
We were very lucky and were the only people on this tour, so had our guide, Darian, all to ourselves. He was very knowledgeable, having had first hand experience of the fall out from the time of the Killing Fields.
This was a really well run tour. Our guide was really friendly and knowledgeable, and shared so much information about Cambodia’s history, the years leading up to the genocide as well as the aftermath. He also shared some of his personal experiences with us. We took our time walking through both the killing fields and the S21 prison, and got so much information. Tour Agency was very communicative via WhatsApp for pickup location and times. Would absolutely recommend this tour for anyone visiting Cambodia.
Excellent trip, we were collected promptly from our hotel by Sam our guide. Starting at S21, Sam provided a clear overview of the history and circumstances that led to the KR regime and subsequent genocide. He answered any questions and allowed time for reflection. Air conditioned minibus, excellent trip and I highly recommend and Thank You Sam 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I had a great tour with our guide Rand (not sure of the spelling). The picked me up on time and we were only 3 total in the van, I call that a VIP tour. Rand was very interesting to listen to since he lived through the whole Khmere Rouge era. I was wondering how come he remembered all those dates, well, he lived it. He took us to Killing Field and this was really important for me since I visited S-21 prison the previous day. It was so interesting that I went back to visit the prison again but this time I had the opportunity to ask question to my guide. I was there the day before but did the tour solo with the audio option. A very good day !!! Steve
Very important visit that gave us deeper insight on the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime. Very colorful descriptions in the audio guides that are available in many languages, even ours, Swedish. The place is pedagogical and flexible so you can stroll around in your own pace and order. We were 4 persons and choose to take a taxi from our hotel to the museum (S-21). and after that directly to Killing fields at Choeung Ek. Had lunch at a restaurant right across the entrance of Choeung Ek. Strongly recommended
Amazing experience with Mr. Chamrouen. He told his child experience in the fields. He was separeted from his family. We can see all the buildings
Mr Chamrouen is the best guide for your visit. Not only you get a very knowledgeable and good English speaker guide but also you get a first hand experience from a person who lived himself in that horrible time. In a place of sadness, Mr Chamrouen makes your visit the most amazing ever! Well recommended! Our group loved it.
This was a deeply emotional guided tour and a first person experience narrative of the terrible events of Pol Pot’s regime.
Good English speaking guide who spoke a little too fast sometimes. Have lots of amazing information though and did a great job.
Ron was a great guide. He put a lot of perspective on a grim and difficult topic. Highly recommend this tour.
After initial issues with communication, not well explained pick up details and instruction, and having to end up walking to the pick up car, holding others up. Excellent eye opener on the atrocities of the Cambodian Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot regime, killing millions of their own people. A terrible period for humanity not so long ago. Expertly explained by our guide who lived the experience and have a heartfelt guidance to the time. Truly gives you perspective and appreciate others lived experiences. Thankyou
Great driver (DaRa) and great guide too! Def recommend. Very thorough and educational. We were impressed and comfortable!
We went to the Killing fields and S21 with our guide Rouan (apologies if I misspelt his name). Rouan was amazing in sharing all the history leading up to Pol Pot and then taking us through that awful time, including how it affected his own family. The tour was very emotional but we felt it was important to understand what the people of Cambodia went through so recently. It is a testimony to the people here that the museums exist and that people want to share their histories to help stop these awful things happening again. We also met Chum Mey at the end of the tour - a 95 year old survivor of S21 who now dedicates his life to sharing his experiences of what happened. There was no pressure to buy his book but I was happy to help support Chum Mey as our guide explained there is no social security to help look after him and the 10$ his book cost is used 50% to support Chum Mey and 50% to support other survivors. Although a tough day in terms of the horrors you see, I recommend the tour so we can all help spread what we learn and remember the poor victims.
