It's a great experience exploring the wilderness - looking for echidnas, numbats, kangaroos, and wild birds. We learned so much from Skip, our friendliest guide who is so eager to share his knowledge & experience. Wonderful dinner together with wine and soft drinks was served at dusk at the camping compound. Toilet was clean. We then went to another wildlife sanctuary and got to see a few Woylie and Quenda coming out to feed after sunset. After that Skip took us to a dark site to see stars and the milky way before driving us back to Perth.

Itinerary
The Dryandra Woodlands is a biodiversity hotspot containing more than 850 species of plants, more than 100 species of birds and 24 mammals, including the endangered numbat and bilby. The woodlands provide refuge for some of our unique Australian animals including echidnas, brush tailed wallabies, woylies, quendas and chuditch. Upon arrival at the woodlands, you will have time for a short bush walk, looking for native animals and stunning wildflowers in season before sitting down for a picnic dinner in the forest. Your guide will cook some food on the barbeque, there will be fresh salads, cheese and biscuits, wine and hot drinks available. After dinner, enjoy a scenic drive through the forest as the sunlight filters through the branches of the trees, casting long shadows and a flickering light creating a magical effect on the forest floor. Keep an eye out for the many kangaroos in the area as they dodge and weave their way through the trees.
Barna Mia is a unique wildlife sanctuary for some of our endangered mammals. The guides will provide a short talk and video explaining the conservation work done at Barna Mia. Then you head in to the sanctuary for a guided night walk where we sit and wait for the night creatures of Barna Mia to appear. Before long, you will be entertained by the animals of Barna Mia as they emerge from the darkness in their search for food.
To complete the tour, we do a stop just out of the woodlands to do a bit of stargazing. The guide will point out some of the objects visible in the night sky for you and you will have time to take a few photos of the night sky. The Dryandra region has some of the darkest skies in Australia, perfect for seeing the milky way and shooting stars.

What a great evening! Thanks so much Skip. Your passion and energy was contagious. We were 2 of 4 people on the trip and the other 2 struggled with English (they could understand it but not really converse) so we chatted basically the whole time. We were so lucky to see 2 numbats at 2 different locations (no idea where). We also saw Boodie's, Quenda's, Mala's and Woylie's at Barna Mia. We were very lucky to see as much as we did as it was very windy and raining. We were also very blessed to have been visited by PEEP PEEP at our dinner location and got to witness the amazing relationship the beautiful maggies have with Skip. Unfortunately the clouds interrupted our stargazing but I do not think a single person was upset as we had just had such a wonderful afternoon/evening. Thanks again so much Skip! Really appreciate everything you have done/are doing for the conservation there in WA.
What a wonderful experience to visit this part of WA. Skip was educational and entertaining at the same time. Dinner was of a very high standard considering we were in the middle of nowhere. Thoroughly enjoy the whole experience and would recommend this tour to my family and friends. Great adventure.
An exceptional tour! Every aspect of the afternoon & evening provided guests with wonderful knowledge, fabulous food, loads of laughs & the most uniquely Australian wildlife encounters! Gavin & Skip provide an amazing relaxed & comfortable journey that is real value for money. Small guest numbers allows for an intimate connection with nature & allows guests to reflect on their own interpretation of the experience. For nature & wildlife lovers this tour is a must!
Our guide was very enthusiastic and had a lot of respect for the animals we saw. He was also talkative and energetic, and that made the drives not feel as long. We were also lucky enough to see both echidnas and numbats, out in the open. The respect for the animals on this tour is exactly what you want, from a wildlife tour, it's not like other places where people can just touch what should be wild animals. The food was good and we enjoyed it close to a field full of kangaroos. A great experience to be inside Barna Mia and see their nocturnal animals. And listen to some very knowledgeable people who love what they do:) Thank you
Seeing near-threatened species numbat in the wild in the afternoon. Several nocturnal mammals in the preserve at night. Awesome experience.
We were 9 guests with our tour guide Skip. He was very knowledgeable and funny. Learned a lot about the area and when he spotted an Echidna on the side of the road he stopped and let us get out an observe them. Had a delicious picnic dinner then went to a nature reserve and did night tour swing a number of night creatures. Very enjoyable.
Skip is a knowledgable, friendly and funny guide. Great bush dinner. Saw echidnas and a numbat. Great wildlife experience at Bama Mia.
This was a great experience for my family! We learned a lot!!!
A wonderful step off the beaten track. Punctual, professional and knowledgable host (Martin) who kept us engaged in meaningful conversation throughout the trip and provided useful, interesting information and anecdotes. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Very entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide!
Had an excellent time, well worth the money paid and our tour guide skip made the tour very fun with echidna spotting and a thew other surprises.
Unique experience to see conservation in action at Barna Mia. A bit of a ride to get there but well worth it. Our guide was informative and engaging. The spot for dinner provided an opportunity to observe a field of kangaroos and various birdlife. Overall I'd recommend this tour 100%.
Booked for my mum & she had a great time with Skip. Very knowledgeable and great company for her. Highly recommended
Had an amazing afternoon and night with Skip as our guide. We were incredibly lucky with siting of two Bilby’s and even saw a shooting star! Lots of great conversation and dinner was beautiful- plenty to go around. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a more wildlife-based experience, this is a great opportunities.
Amazing tour. Highly recommend this to everyone especially those with kids, our tour guide Skip was amazing with my grandkids and they loved him. He is very knowledgeable and made the tour very enjoyable.
What an awesome tour! We had a total of five guests on our tour and our tour guide was friendly, down to earth, knowledgable, and provided great service. BBQ dinner in the bush was good. The stops along the way to Barna Mia felt well picked out to get a feel for the WA bush. Barna Mia was fantastic - so many small Australian mammals to see and watch, and do yourself a favour - buy a gift at the gift shop, because the money supports a great cause. If you are looking for something a bit different and love Australian wildlife, this tour is a must-do!
enjoyed the trip but feel there was an opportunity to provide more time in the bush with some more information and viewing options
This tour went beyond my expectations! Our guide Skip was super friendly, knowledgable and kept us entertained during the drive to Dryandra (meaning the 2h passed by in no time). Before stopping for the view point, we were lucky enough to spot Echidna's and Wallabies on the way there! At our dinner spot, there were plenty of kangaroos minding their business. In the forest we got to see some more Echidna's, that we had to search for first. However, that was definitely part of the fun! The dinner was delicious too:)) (chicken skewers with wraps, dips and veggies). The Nature Park (main destination), offered a great opportunity to see many kinds of nocturnal animals such as: Bilbies, Boodies, Malas and Potoroos! Catching a glimpse of these animals is guaranteed here, since they’re being attracted with food. Nonetheless, it’s just as thrilling to spot them in the dark by using the infrared torches :) I definitely recommend this tour for people who prefer a more personal experience, love and can respect nature and its wildlife.
A nocturnal wildlife tour to the Dryandra woodlands that should never be missed! An unforgettable experience , being a local but feeling like a tourist with Skip the amazing tour guide.Never a dull moment with him on board with a private but small tour group . He was very knowledgeable , had good humour & kept us informed all along from the beginning to the end . The star gazing experience was magnificent! We were thoroughly spoilt with drinks & BBQ dinner at twilight time Despite being an extremely hot day everyone had a fantastic time & went home feeling a day well well accomplished! Thank you Skip.
I booked this tour with my friends as a new and different experience and to feel a bit like tourists in our own state. We had a great day and had a lot of fun with the tour guides. The highlights were seeing all the animals including a record of 7 echidnas on the way down and of course the animals at Barna Mia. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone local to WA or visiting as a great way to see more of our state and a great chance to see our amazing wildlife. This was my first time going down to the Dryandra woodland and I will definitely be back.
Excellent experience with Quokkas Adventures Tours. The team is really professional and managed to accommodate a last minute tour request from our side. Our tour lasted 10 hours and we have seen so much during this period! Our guide Skip made this tour a wonderful experience and both kids and adults were fully entertained during the full tour. Very strong sense of humour, extremely knowledgeable and going the extra mile to accommodate our needs. We are really thankful to Quokkas Adventures Tours and highly recommend this unforgettable experience for all travelers to Perth! Thank you again 🙏
Had a great time. Good to get away from the crowds and experience some Australian wildlife without lots of tourists. Food was good. Tour guide was friendly and knowledgable. Good communication beforehand.
The tour was lovely, the weather wasn't too bad, the food was amazing! Gavin, my driver and tour guide, was very helpful and friendly. He's very familiar with everything, the tour, the area, and also the stars. 10/10 first solo tour experience!!!
We had an awesome Valentine's day trip and thoroughly enjoyed getting up close with the night wildlife. Our tour guide, Skip, was excellent, plenty of knowledge that he is happy to share. The food was delicious, the car was comfy and the wildlife came out to say hello. We saw Kangaroos, all 47 of them, Bush Tailed Wallabys an Echidna, Bilbys, Quendas, Woylies, Malas, boodies and even a Possum was hanging around outside the fence line. The Forrest itself looks amazing, I think I will go back in Wildflower season. Thanks for a great day/night Skip.
Skip was an excellent guide, full of knowledge and humor. This was a great tour to a wildlife centre, that was focused on the wellbeing of the animals and their natural behaviour, not a petting zoo for tourists. It’s also rounded off with some spectacular stargazing. If you get the chance - go!
Do yourself two favourite when in Perth - visit the wildlife at Dryandra and don’t drive yourself. Skip was a great guide with lots of information about the bilbies, kangaroos, and other wildlife we saw. He later surprised us with his extensive knowledge about the stars when we stopped in a dark zone on the way back. My one disappointment was that I took so many photos that my phone died!
Such an amazing experience! We drove to the woodlands and saw so many amazing animals. I was super excited to get a close up of an echidna! Our guide Gavin knew where to look to see different animals and was super knowledgeable about them too. We saw a goanna on the road, some cool birds, and many kangaroos as well. In the night, we got lucky and saw all the animals that barna mia had to offer including: woylie, bilby, mala, boodie, and quenda. All super cool animals, and all ones that I would have never known about had I not done this tour. This trip was totally worth it and I would do it again! The dinner was also really good which I didn’t expect.
We had a wonderful time with Quokka Adventure Tours. Gavin was incredibly professional and organized. He picked us up right on time at Hostel G in a very clean and comfortable white Mercedes minibus. The communication was excellent from start to finish. Highly recommend this tour if you’re looking for a smooth and friendly experience in Perth
I joined the tour on my own, but felt very welcomed and engaged throughout the whole trip. Skip did a wonderful job helping us spot many animals, and the visit to Barna Mia sanctuary was fantastic. Thank you, Skip, for helping me catch an early flight after the tour.
The experience is smooth, Gavin led the drive and tour, is quite knowledgeable about wildlife and spotting the animals. Length of visit was just nice. Was a small group of 6 of us. Saw a wild gowana, some joeys and numbat, also some possum, mala and woylie ! Admission fees were included and hotel pick up, drop off is a plus - given that it’s a full day tour, it’s great that all these were taken care of.
Unfortunately, this has been a disappointing experience for me. The tour has taken place mainly on the bus, where we stayed for 3.5 h with only a brief toilet stop. We didn't have the tea/coffee break on the way as advertised, and when we finally got to the Woodland, we crossed it while staying on the bus, trying spotting some animals. This was unfortunate as walking in the bush would have been much better. The advertised bush walk lasted for 10 mins only, during which our guide didn't talk about anything regarding the place, nor he did during this long trip to the bush, actually - for the whole trip, he talked all the time with the passenger seated at the front with him, and shared no information whatsoever with the rest of the group about the areas we got through (which is usually what guides do, otherwise what's the point of going on a tour?). We finally got to the camping site to have dinner. Again, the guide said only: Okay, you have 45 mins to wander around while I set dinner up. I advice against wandering too far away as there's no phone reception at all in that area, so getting lost could be easy. Dinner was nice, consisting of nibbles, cold salads, and cooked meat. I asked for the vegetarian option I selected while booking (it's usually a veggie pattie), but I was just told that there was none, period. Hot drinks after the meal weren't served although the box was there. In general, I had the impression that our guide didn't seem keen to be with us on that day. We then headed to the animal sanctuary, which was the only great thing of this tour - the lady who guided us was so knowledgeable, and we spotted a lot of animals. We then went back to bus, and the star gazing consisted of literally 5 minutes on the side of the road, where the guide pointed out some stars with a torch. This tour advertises for much more than this, which I found misleading. It was a beautiful night, and stars were clearly visible - however, I had gone on another tour a few days before this one, and the actual stargazing consisted of spending +30 mins looking through telescope and binoculars, lying down on a blanket etc. We then headed back to Perth, and the guide just resumed his private conversation with the passenger next to him... I feel I wasted my money and time on this tour, which isn't ideal while traveling, and I hope that this isn't the usual standard of this tour as the rest of the reviews are quite positive.
We attended this tour and had a fantastic time. It was a great way to get up and close to lots of the different marsupials. The food was decent. The stars were amazing. The highlight was seeing the Bilbies scurrying around!
It was a great tour full of animals that I have never seen. It was really a great experience. I enjoyed having the animals Run right up to me at night they were excited to be fed on a Saturday evening.
Martin was an amazing tour guide, dinner was great and all the scenery were so nice! I absolutely recommend people travelling solo on this tour, my tour mates were also extremely kind and we all had a good chat :)
Great tour with many stops to see different areas and landscapes. I loved the guide’s commentary and felt safe while they drove on winding dirt roads. Going into the sanctuary was so special and unique, I’d highly recommend it to anyone who has the time to take for this tour.
I've known Gavin from a previous tour who was absolutely brilliant at everything so decided to use Quokka tours this time with Skip who was an absolute joy to be with from pick up to drop off. Very knowledgeable about everything on route and destination, really lovely picnic along the way spotting kangaroo and others food was 5 star as was the host .Seeing all the animals in the final part of the tour under the stars we'll it don't get much better. COYH SKIP
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Gavin. We were celebrating her birthday and even got a private tour, thanks to others dropping out, due to illness. We saw kangaroos up close, a range of marsupials and had some photos taken under the stars by Gavin. He cooked for us and shared lots of interesting facts and stories of the areas we passed and visited. Will be recommending to friends who visit Perth, for sure!
Exceptional tour into the dryandra national park exploring some of the nocturnal animals and beautiful landscape. We were fortunate to see a sand monitor lizard, lots of kangaroos, Bilbies and wollies. Our local guide gavin was so knowledgeable about the wildlife of this wonderful part of the world. The dinner was lovely and our group very friendly. If you want an authentic Aussie tour this is one for you!
Gavin is an experienced guide who's knowledgeable and super friendly. The whole experience was very enjoyable and memorable. Dinner out in the woodlands was very good too. Would highly recommend his tours!
A unique wildlife experience in the Dryendra woodlands. The only place in Australia that you will see Bilbies up this close. Fantastic to see Woylies, Boodies, Mala and Quenda in a protected enclosure. Quokka Tours are the only tour operator taking tourists to this remote location. Many thanks to Skip for looking after us.
From booking to pick up was a breeze, quick communication and instructions, travel was very comfortable and safe, sites along the way to Dryandra were the best you could ask for. Skip - our guide was very knowledgeable and could share his stories of what creature’s he had seen at different places, along the way. The BBQ food and drinks were outstanding with plenty to eat. The Barna Mia night tour in the Dryandra woodland national park is something most would not experience in their lifetime, bilbys, woylie, mala, quenda and boodie, just wandering around, easy to take photos or videos of them. The night sky full of stars and satellites, visible and bright. I can’t recommend this trip enough, you will learn so much about the night creatures that without your visit and support could become extinct. Just do it!!
We really loved this experience and Skip our guide really contributed to this with his good sense of humour and knowledge of the local wildlife. The staff at the national park were very informative and we managed to see woylies, bilbeys, malas, quendas and wallabies, as well as kangaroos and many birds whilst we were waiting for the lovely BBQ to be prepared. The trip was very good value for money. We were well looked after from pick up to drop off. Don't be put off by the tour length - there is a lot of driving but you will get to see a different side to WA than you do from any other tour offered. We only had one day in the Perth area and we would both say getting out to Dryandra was not only a regional highlight, but one of the best experiences of our time in Australia.
My family of four (2 teens) just enjoyed the incredible Australian night animal safari! Gavin was a super knowledgeable and patient guide. We learned so much about Western Australian wildlife in beautiful settings! Loved the nocturnal tour at Barna Mia sanctuary. We saw SO many animals in this one afternoon/evening that we never knew existed - threatened/endangered species like the bilby, woylie, mala, quenda, echidna, and boodie. We also saw kangaroos, parrots, and cockatoos. Also worth mentioning...the picnic dinner was delicious...bbq chicken, really tasty citrus pistachio cranberry salad, hummus/veggies, and even wine! And I can't forget...my kids were thrilled they got to roast marshmallows! This tour was definitely a top highlight of our vacation.. HIGHLY recommend!
Worth every cent! Our guide skip ( not his real name) has a passion for his job and a knowledge that is amazing. Laughing and joking all the way whilst educating you on the landscape and the diverse mammals of the area. Highly recommend.
Fabulous experience from start to end and Gavin was a fabulous guide - ensuring we had a great time. Was awesome to visit the Dryandra Woodlands and the picnic dinner was so yummy too. Highlight of the trip was the Barna Mia Sanctuary where we got to see some of the endangered marsupials up close under a starry night.
Excellent experience of the picturesque WA bushland and Dryandra Woodlands. Guide was very knowledgeable and dinner was delicious. Saw many WA animals at the sanctuary close up - a unique experience and a must for anyone visiting WA.
If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind tour in Perth, not just a run-of-the mill one which everyone else has done, this is the activity for you. Quokka Adventure Tours delivers an artisanal and immersive experience from start to finish. I felt that I was on a lovely adventure, exploring the Dryandra Woodlands for wildflowers and wildlife. There were pleasant surprises throughout, from the chirpy green ringneck parrots who flew along with us in the comfortable minibus, leading us through the ancient trees of the forest, to sighting an entire field of kangaroos at the end of the clearing. We saw a big joey making multiple attempts to worm its way into his mummy’s pouch, and a majestic, probably male kangaroo, staring at us quizzically from afar. The best part was not knowing what wildlife we would be able to uncover; Gavin the guide, took us through the fields scattered with wildflowers in blues, pinks and yellows, in search of echidnas. The next stop was at the Barna Mia sanctuary, one that preserves a community of wild animals native to Australia. We learned of the intensive conservation efforts made to protect these little animals, and while the background of it was commendable, I have to admit the highlight was to actually see the Bilbys, Woylies and Malas, eating their supper right in front of us. They were so adorable, using their tiny paws to hold their food while chomping on them, and they could jump so high! And when we looked up amongst the trees, we could see a whole blanket of stars and planets lighting up the night sky. It was so surreal. But the night was not yet over, as Gavin took us back to Dryandra Woodlands to take photos in the mystical forest, with the majestic Milky Way as backdrop. To cap it all off, the elusive echidna we had been desperately searching for earlier in the evening, finally made its appearance just as we were leaving the forest. It literally walked across the road right in front of our minibus, taking its time, as if telling us that our persistence had paid off. Quokka Adventure Tours takes pride in what it does, and I felt that the sole purpose of the guide was to make this the most memorable experience for us. The tour certainly delivered what it promised, and I will fondly bring the day back with me.
It was an unforgettable night with Quokka Adventure Tours! Skip was such a fantastic guide, making the whole experience fun and engaging with amazing wildlife encounters and stories under the stars. My little boy enjoyed himself thoroughly from start to finish. The BBQ picnic dinner, prepared by the Gordon Ramsay of the forest, was absolutely delicious. The minibus was clean and comfortable making the journey even better. It was the perfect mix of fun, nature and calm. Such a unique experience for both adults and kids. Thank you for looking after us so well!
Great time with Quokka Adventure Tours on the animal safari. Beautiful views along the way, wild kangaroos, delicious dinner in nature, and of course the nighttime safari. I learned a lot about endangered species in Australia. We also spent some time enjoying the stars. Our tour guide, Skip is great. He took care of us and made sure we enjoyed everything.
