Best tour in Philadelphia! Covers history of women that aren't mentioned in the texts I had in school. Zoe was an awesome tour guide; even treated our group to an extra stop.
What a wonderful tour! Zoe showed up on time, was very nice, spoke well and answered our. She clearly enjoys her city and its diverse character. Who knew about all these other things that happened here? If you are looking to learn about Independence Hall or Benjamin Franklin, a more traditional tour might be a better match for you.
I visited Philly for the first time and wanted to do some type of history tour, but I wanted something that was unique and more in tuned with my personal interests. The Badass Woman's History Tour was perfect! I learned a lot of things about some amazing women, most of whom I had never heard of before. Alice was a great tour guide and was full of cool information, plus just lovely to chat and walk around with.
Enlightening; beautiful walking tour or areas of Philly; IMportant to understand the contribution of women in the history of Philly and the lack of public recognition for women’s accomplishments
Martha did a great job highlighting amazing women! The tour was educational, thoughtful, and great experience.
A super fun way to learn about the city’s and country’s history. Shawn was an excellent guide. Was definitely a highlight of our trip.
This is a fabulous way to honor important women that otherwise would be lost to history. My friend and I learned of women we never knew. Our guide was also very informative about issues of the day: the struggles the National Park Service are having preserving accurate history, especially regarding slavery.
We had alice as out tour guide and she was AMAZING! She was knowledgeable and passionate about the history of "bad-ass" women of Philly. I go on historical waking tours wherever I go and consider myself well read but I learned so much during this walking tour and it was so interesting! I can't recommend this tour enough for both women and men!
We need more women like Hannah Callowhill Penn who assumed the duties of governorship when her husband William Penn languished after a series of strokes. She ran the state of Pennsylvania for many years after thwarting her oldest son’s attempts to claim the family home following his father’s death. Bad boy! Badass woman! We learned this and several other stories whilst touring the great city of Philadelphia during the Semiquincentennial celebrations. Thank goodness the guides dispensed with the typical, boring “where you from” introductions. I would have appreciated an overview, however, of what was going to happen.
This tour was exactly what I hoped for—inspirational stories of women that are difficult to find in the large-scale historical centers. My tour guide, Alice, is a history teacher who made the experience captivating, personal, and safe—like a nice long walk with a good friend. I haven't stopped talking about this experience and I’ll remember it forever.

The tour was so amazing and insightful! Joey was a great guide with a good sense of humor who taught me so much about Philadelphia's history and the women who have shaped it. I would highly recommend to those looking to learn more about the city's background and some historical women they might not be aware of!
Zoe, our guide, was phenomenal- knowledgeable, passionate, and prepared. I've lived in Philly for 20 years and learned a lot. The tour was a full two hours and it flew by.
This was a great tour with tons of information I did not know about important women in Philadelphia history. The guide was very informative and interesting. Highly recommend!
Really good alternative tour. Learned about things you wouldn't normally expect to learn on a walking tour, so well worth it, even if you're not from the LGBTQ+ community.
I grew up in Philadelphia and never learned anything Joey taught us. We were the only two people on the 2-hour walking tour. We enjoyed every second and will take all the tours this company offers. Our guide, Joe’s, was well-prepared with photos to show us. He welcomed our questions and showed us even more than promised. Highly recommend!
Loved this tour! Learned so much about the untold stories and history (herstory!) of important women in Philadelphia who shaped the world. Zoe was an excellent guide - knowledgeable, interesting, attentive. Highly recommend!
Great small group tour with Rebecca, who is a wonderful guide. This is a good tour for locals as well as Philly visitors and we learned a lot about lesser known, but important figures in Philly and American history. I'll be going back for some of their other tours since we live nearby and they were so friendly and knowledgeable. Meeting up to start the tour was easy and pace was not hurried.
Shawn was an excellent guide on an extremely cold New Year’s Day morning. It was great to go beyond the typical Philadelphia HIStory and learn about so many women I’d never heard of before— yay for HERstory! I especially enjoyed learning about Oney Judge and the LGBTQ activists recognized in the Gayborhood. Thank you, Shawn!
We should be calling Philly the City of Sisterly (not just Brotherly) Love, after learning about so many fascinating women. Joey was an exceptionally smart, warm, and kind tour guide. We walked for 1 hour 45 minutes around flat terrain (beware of old cobblestones though if that's an issue for you) while Joey kept us fascinated. I highly recommend this tour with a more unique twist, often overlooked, on history.
This was a beautiful tour led by Shawn. He shared the stories of many badass women starting with the inspiring story of Ona Judge. Shawn shared the stories of each woman with his own authentic storytelling style. I was brought to tears on several occasions. I learned so much about the founding mothers during an essential time when this herstory is being erased. Please make time for this tour on your next trip to Philadelphia!
I really enjoyed the Badass Women's History Tour. Shawn was a wonderful guide -- I very much appreciated his storytelling style, passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge. If you want to learn an important angle of American history that has gone unheralded, check out this tour.
We had a great tour with Shawn. He knows his stuff, was able to answer questions and definitely showed us parts of the area that we wouldn't have discovered on our own. The tour was a fabulous way to learn about parallel and important people in Philadelphia.
This was such an amazing addition to our Philly adventure. Martha did an amazing job, we learned so much. Definitely recommend this tour
Zoe was just a fantastic Tour Guide. We were again the only tour participants so we had her to ourselves. We learned so much about the women who were very important in the Philadelphia history which was so interesting compared to what we heard on our "history tour" the day before. Highly recommend this tour to visitors.
Highly informative and entertaining. Lots of things to learn about the women who shaped Philadelphia! Zoe was knowledgeable and happy to engage in conversations about what we were seeing. Highly recommend!
Fun, informative tour about amazing women in Philly history who made significant contributions to the development of the city. Shawn was fantastic and a great storyteller
Sean was our tour guide for this incredibly rich tour with remarkable stories about women in Philadelphia who left their mark on history. It was HOT but the time went by too quickly. Sean’s knowledge, storytelling, humor, and engagement made the tour. He also made sure to take us into some shade and was repeatedly asking about everyone’s comfort. Would not hesitate to do this tour again. Wish they had one in every city.
We were a group of college friends who met in Philly 50+ years after we graduated. Rebecca led us on a tour that exposed us to information that not even the Philly natives knew. She was delightful, very knowledgeable, and made the tour one of the highlights of our weekend. Absolutely recommend!
I went with several friends all in our early 70’s. Rebecca was engaging, knowledgeable, and fun to be with. She paced the walk well and included stops for rest and water. We wanted more than the standard spiel about the liberty bell and Ben Franklin’s. This tour fit the bill perfectly
The Badass Women’s History Tour was an informative, well researched tour! I loved the walk and Rebecca was a fabulous guide with great info on contributions of Philly women and Philly in general… and great inside stories!! Learned a lot and the whole group was fun too…highly recommend!
Olivia is a great tour guide! She was so entertaining and educative and as a first time visitor to Philly, I learned a lot.
Great tour! Loved the girl (not Andrew haha). I really enjoyed this experience. Great to hear about women and gay people in Philly.
Awesome tour!! Super educational and interesting! Loved learning about Phillys history and seeing the notable sights
What a wonderful tour! I grew up in Philly and had NO idea about most of the cool amazing women Joey discussed. Easy walk, super interesting, and well worth the time. Looking forward to taking another tour with Beyond the Bell next time we are in town.
Best tour ever! Such interesting history highlighting women and the LGBTQ community. Funny and informative! We need more of this in the world please!
What a great tour. There is a rich history of women and LGBTQ people here that you will not hear about on the standard tours. Our guide Joey was amazing. I definitely recommend!
Joey was fabulous, clear, kind and knowledgeable. The women highlighted were incredibly inspiring!!!! This was a bday present to myself. Who doesn’t want to hear about badass women on their birthday!
Wonderful day learning more about the unsung history of women who have made Philadelphia and America better with Beyond the BellTours! I learned so much that I didn't already know and was inspired by women who saw a future that didn't exist and fought for it even when it was hard or seemingly impossible, not letting expectations or limitations of their time stop them from doing what was right and expanding possibilities for all people, especially those most marginalized in our society. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, kind, thoughtful, and engaging. If you're looking for something new in a place you thought you knew well, this tour is for you.
An OUTstanding herstory tour. Joey is an inspired storyteller with a gentle voice, a profound respect of subject, and deep knowledge connecting then and now. Take this walk! Carole & Suzanne
The tour was terrific. Our guide Joey was personable, very much knew the history and gave a real persective of the what people, men and women, were thinking and doing at the time of the country’s birth and after. It felt more like a great conversation instead of a lecture because our guide listened and genuinely liked responding to our reactions and questions. We came away with great sense of the city’s personality today. We will highly recommend this tour to others.
As part of an informal company outing, we took the Badass Women's History Tour and it was truly enlightening, inspirational and just fun! Couldn't have asked for a better guide than Joey, who was charming, warm and so knowledgeable! Since I live in the Gayborhood and have learned a decent amount, esp. about our local murals, I think I'll be back at some point to try that tour. Thank you, Joey, for the wonderful experience!
Totally enjoyable tour. Joey was our group tour guide and did an excellent job. He was substantive on the history of the "badass" women and delivered his knowledge with energy and wit. We all had a fun time learning with him.
Sean did a great job with our small group. The sites and stories of women, enslaved peoples, and LGBT+ activists lost to ‘history’ was very well organized and provided such an interesting alternative to the standard founding-of-the-country agenda. Highly recommend.
Thanks to Joey and team for designing a truly WONDERFUL tour experience in Philly. Our group did a private group tour (about 10 of us) for my BACHELORETTE weekend. We figured what better way to celebrate women??? We had terrible cold and rainy weather and his storytelling was so engaging we barely noticed. Not only is he so clearly passionate about the stories he is telling, it is clear he truly knows and loves Philly. He had great recommendations for the rest of our day including lunch and coffee spots as well as bars. I can't recommend this tour enough for any group, you will not be disappointed by your experience and you'll feel glad you're supporting this group!
10/10, would recommend! Joey is the perfect guide. So much knowledge of the city, really great sense of humor. You can tell from the get-go, there’s a deep love of sharing information and showing off what the city stood and stands for. Much appreciation for the amount of shade you could keep us in on this sunny summer day! Thank you very much for your time! I learned so much about the incredible, badass women in our history!
I was in Philly for a bachelorette party and my group took the Badass Women’s History Tour. The forecast said it was going to rain and did it ever! Joey, our tour guide, was so accommodating and did his best to keep us under shelter or inside during the tour. He was informative and made the tour fun and engaging. This was my first time in Philly and I was amazed by the diverse group of women that made this town what it is today. Thank you Joey for being a great tour guide and humoring our group by wearing your matching “Vote For Women” sash!!
This was such a fun and amazing tour. A women's network group (NAWBO) went for International Women's Day which was perfect for this kind of tour. Co-Founder Joey Leroux was knowledgeable about Women Historians in Philadelphia, and his sense of humor did not disappoint. You can tell that he truly enjoys what he does, and btw I still think he looks like he's 21. He took his time, explained everything, and made sure that we had enough time for Q&A. I would book with him again! Kudos great job!
We had a wonderful tour with Rebecca. She was knowledgeable, thoughtful and funny. Would highly recommend to everyone (tourist and Philly residents alike).
