About Activity
Notre Dame de Paris is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, with almost 900 years of history to uncover within its walls. It caught the world’s attention in 2019 when a devastating fire ravaged the building, causing extensive damage and forcing the cathedral to close its doors for more than 5 years to allow for an extensive restoration project. Notre Dame finally reopened to visitors at the end of 2024, and our private tour allows you to delve into the stories of the cathedral with a local expert, gaining invaluable insights into its incredible architecture, eventful history, and much-talked-about renovations.

The journey begins at the Musée de Cluny, the Left Bank's great repository of medieval art and one of the few places in Paris where fragments of Notre-Dame's earliest history survive up close. Here your guide sets the scene, painting a picture of medieval Paris as it would have looked when the cathedral's first stones were laid, and introducing the sculptures and carved details drawn from Notre-Dame itself. Among them are the haunting stone heads of the biblical kings that once lined the cathedral's facade. You’ll hear the dramatic story of how they were torn down and beheaded at the height of the French Revolution by crowds who mistook them for French monarchs, buried for safekeeping, and only rediscovered by chance nearly two centuries later during construction work nearby.
From the Cluny, your guide walks you through the essentials of Gothic architecture, the pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and soaring verticality that transformed how medieval builders thought about light and space, before a brief stop at the Church of Saint-Séverin. Tucked into the Latin Quarter, Saint-Séverin is the oldest surviving church on the Left Bank and once served as a resting point for pilgrims making their way toward the cathedral, its twisting Flamboyant Gothic columns offering a preview of the architectural drama to come.
The route then leads across the Seine to the Île de la Cité, where Notre-Dame itself finally comes into view. Standing before the cathedral, your guide brings its facade to life, from the gargoyles perched high above the square to the intricately carved portals telling biblical stories in stone for a largely illiterate medieval public. You'll take in the twin towers, the flying buttresses that made the cathedral's soaring interior possible, and the luminous rose windows that have captivated visitors for centuries. Your guide will also walk you through the events of April 2019, when fire tore through the cathedral's roof and collapsed its spire, and the extraordinary five-year reconstruction that followed, bringing together architects, artisans, and conservators who worked tirelessly to restore the cathedral to its former glory, balancing historical accuracy with modern innovation.
After a journey through eight centuries of faith, artistry, revolution, and resilience, your guide will bid you farewell as you step inside the cathedral and take in the quiet majesty of its interior at your own pace. More than a superficial visit, this tour provides an immersion into the remarkable history and enduring spirit of Notre Dame, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for why this extraordinary monument remains one of the most powerful symbols of Paris.
Please note: This tour does not include a guided visit inside Notre-Dame Cathedral. At the end of the tour, you will have the opportunity to enter the Cathedral independently and explore at your own pace.
