About Activity
France is well known for its impressive collection of châteaux, many of which are deeply tied to its history. Versailles is, of course, the most prominent example, but there are many other remarkable châteaux within easy reach of Paris. This delightful day trip allows you to see two of the most important: the Château de Fontainebleau, a fairytale castle surrounded by an old oak forest that has been home to dozens of French monarchs going back 900 years, and Château Vaux-le-Vicomte, a 17th-Century masterpiece that directly inspired Versailles.
On this full-day private day trip, you will:
- Discover two of France’s most intriguing Châteaux on a scenic day trip from Paris;
- Enjoy convenient hotel pick-up and drop-off in Paris;
- Begin with a visit to the Château de Fontainebleau, one of the most important royal residences in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
- Peel back the layers of history as your guide shares insights into the château’s illustrious inhabitants, from Marie Antoinette to Napoleon;
- See the grand apartments, the Renaissance galleries, Napoleon’s throne room, and the elegant courtyards;
- Make your way to Vaux-le-Vicomte, a stunning Baroque château that inspired Versailles;
- Admire the harmony between the architecture, the interiors and the gardens, and learn about the three influential artists who achieved this feat and caught the attention of Louis XIV;
- Hear about the powerful nobleman for whom the château was built, and how his lavish lifestyle would prove his downfall.
Step away from Paris for a full day devoted to two of France’s most intriguing Châteaux, each a window onto a different chapter of the nation’s story. Your excursion begins when your private driver and guide collect you from your hotel and take you southeast through the countryside of the Île-de-France, with pre-arranged admission to Fontainebleau, Vaux-le-Vicomte and their equally impressive grounds.
The morning belongs to the Château de Fontainebleau, one of the most important royal residences in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Few places in Europe reward a thoughtful guide as richly as this one. Over some nine centuries, successive rulers reshaped, expanded, and redecorated the palace to their own tastes, leaving behind a layered record of royal ambition, rather like a manuscript written over and over on the same page. As you wander the grand apartments, the Renaissance galleries, Napoleon’s throne room, and the elegant courtyards, your guide peels back those layers and brings to life the figures who lived here, from Marie Antoinette to Napoleon himself.
Lunch follows at your own expense, and your guide will help you shape it around your tastes; perhaps a traditional restaurant in the town of Fontainebleau, a more refined countryside setting along the route, or, when available, a table at one of the châteaux themselves.
Your afternoon will be spent at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, a Baroque masterpiece that so impressed the young Louis XIV that it became the model for Versailles. What sets Vaux apart is its extraordinary harmony: architecture, interiors, and gardens conceived as a single, unified work of art by three gifted talents, the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter Charles Le Brun, and the landscape designer André Le Nôtre. You will have the opportunity to stroll the formal gardens, step inside the sumptuous rooms, and hear the story of Nicolas Fouquet, the ambitious man for whom it was all created, and how a lifestyle of dazzling excess would prove his undoing.
As the day draws to a close, your driver returns you to your hotel, leaving you with a richer understanding of how France’s châteaux reflect both royal power and artistic vision.
