Settle in for a comfortable journey south into the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional architectural legacy and its outsized influence on French and European history. After a seamless pick-up in Paris, you’ll spend a full day exploring the storybook landscape of royal châteaux, quiet river towns, and rolling countryside in the company of your experienced local driver-guide.
Your first stop is the Château d'Amboise, a commanding riverside fortress dating to the 15th century, once a favoured royal residence and now home to the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his final years in the town under the patronage of King François I. Travellers with a taste for the Renaissance may wish to add a short visit to nearby Clos Lucé, the manor house where da Vinci lived and worked until his death, its rooms and gardens still evoking the presence of one of history's great minds.
From Amboise, you will continue to the Château de Chenonceau, arguably the most graceful of the Loire's grand manor houses, its galleries arching directly across the River Cher. Your guide will bring to life the château's remarkable history as it passed between the women who shaped it, from Diane de Poitiers to Catherine de Médicis, each leaving her mark on its architecture and gardens. A stop for lunch is typically arranged around this point in the day, at your own expense; your guide is happy to recommend options suited to your group, including dining at the château's own restaurant.
The day culminates at the Château de Chambord, the largest and most audacious of all the Loire châteaux, its skyline of turrets and chimneys instantly recognisable and its interior famed for a double-helix staircase whose design is often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci himself. Wandering its vast grounds and grand state rooms is a fitting finale to a day spent tracing the artistry, ambition, and intrigue of Renaissance France.
Tickets for all three châteaux are included throughout, so your only task is to take in one of France's most beautiful and historic regions, guided by an expert who knows exactly where to find its best stories.
