We had an amazing time on this birding trip! Mario was an outstanding guide with deep knowledge of birds in the area. You can always tell when you're with someone who really knows his stuff, and Mario definitely does. His pick-up and drop off at the hotel were so appreciated. He made sure we saw the birds we sought out and he got us a number of others. We saw nearly 40 species! Thanks for a great day!

Mario was WONDERFUL. He was willing to customize our trip to our wants/needs. We asked for a long hike and he gave us that. He had binoculars, water, and a phone charger. He was so knowledgeable, patient, and kind. Solo travelers should feel safe with him.
We do a lot of tours, and this was hands down one of the best we've ever done. Extremely knowledgeable guide (who also knows about photography, light, etc). Small, private tour (literally two of us + our guide), so we can look for the things we most want to see (in our case, we wanted to see toucans, and we were looking to do wildlife photography). It's a mix of driving and walking, so if you'd prefer a tour that isn't a 10-mile death march in the rain, this is perfect. (My lemon of a knee was very pleased by this) He can mimic or play tons of bird calls and attract all kinds of birds, and he knows where (and what time of day) to find pretty much any wildlife. Can't say enough good things. 10/10, absolutely recommend.
Mario was a great guide. He was on time, and knew just the spots to take us to see toucans, monkeys, woodpeckers, a sloth, caymans and so many other birds (probably 40 or so). He had a lot of information to provide when I had questions, and was flexible to focus on finding what we were interested. I wouldn’t have seen 1/5 of what we saw without him! Would definitely recommend this for birders and naturalists. He helped us get great photos !
Mario’s is an experience guide, resourceful and knowledgeable. Go beyond his duty. Passionate about his works.
We had a wonderful time birdwatching with Mario. He had a lot of knowledge and was enthusiastic to show us as many birds as possible. He knew the location of several birds that we would never have found on our own. One of the highlights was visiting a snack place where he had set up feeders for hummingbirds and other fruits for different birds. He even gave us snacks there while we rested and observed the multiple birds. The experience is highly recommended.
This was a great experience. Mario was knowledgeable about Panama 's birds and history and accomodated our interests. We would recommend this tour.
Mario was wonderful. Very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend using his service. We saw so many bird spp., l lost count. What a memorable day we had.
Great knowledge of the area and birds. Comfortable transportation ( 7 passenger SUV for group of 4). Wish the tour could be longer.
We had an amazing experience in a morning with Mario! We saw over 50 species— 20+ were new lifers for us. Mario worked to help us find the species which we were most interested to see— plus he went above and beyond in giving us free coffee, empanadas, and fruit. He has a space to use clean bathrooms while watching feeder birds too. He was very conscientious about our physical abilities. He is an excellent teacher and guide and a kind soul.
We can' t say enough good things about our birding trip with Mario. He is knowledgeable, entertaining, and enthusiastic, not only about birds, but about life in Panama in general. We saw many species of birds that we would never have seen had it not been for Mario's keen eye. There are a lot of birding guides and businesses in Panama, but I'm sure there is not a better value than an excursion with Mario.
This was a truly amazing experience. Mario has a keen eye for birds and animals. My wife and I saw 50+ species of birds in about 3 hours, along with sloths and even a group of coatimundi. He is deeply knowledgeable about all the wildlife in the area and its history. I think we might only have seen maybe 10% of the species on our own. His knowledge of the area and the individual bird calls is a sight to behold. His spotting scope brings the birds up close and personal. He is kind and generous with his time. The tour included a stop for coffee and empanadas, which was so welcome given our 6 am start.
Had an amazing tour with Mario, I can definitely recommend doing it! He showed us so much and gave us so many informations not only about birds, about other animals and the country itself. He spotted things you could never see in just a walkby
"Panama with Mario" at the Pipe Line (along the canal ecosystem) was a very satisfying birding and photography experience. Mario is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and sensitive. I will recommend him in a heartbeat. Toucans, antbirds, motmot, chachalaca, a ringed kingfisher with a catch, tiger heron, slaty-tailed trogon, cacique, manekin, hummers, ...and more.
What an awesome outing! Mario is charming, and knowledgeable about the birds, the animals, where they hang out, and the history of Panama. We were lucky to be among the first to try out a new garden spot he has developed with a friend to bring the birds (and agoutis and coatamundis) within feet of us, all feeding on papaya and banana, while we sat in comfortable chairs with coffee. And when we were out and about, he was amazing at locating birds in the wild and focusing his spotter on them so we got really clear views. And found an ant swarm in the rainforest that had lured in a whole lot of birds who got within feet of us, they were so focussed on the insects preying on the ants. A delightful experience! Highly recommend!
We had a fantastic time with Mario during our birding tour. We saw hummingbirds, trogons, flycatchers, and so many more species throughout the day. Mario was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and well spoken. If you are at all interested in birding and in Panama this is a must-do experience!
This was an exciting bird watching tour, but the highlight wasn't a bird , but an anteater. Mario was a wonderful. He brought a spotter scope and was expert at getting the perfect shot onto the cell phone. We saw lots birds and animals. I'm sorry if readers are disappointed but I didn't keep a list of what we saw. We were picked up at our hotel and dropped back there. Mario brought water and delicious pineapple. On the way back to the city he turned the car around because he spotted a 3 toed sloth at the roadside. We travel a lot and enjoy bird and nature watching in each new place. This tour was special.
Mario was a superb guide who helped us spot and photograph an amazing diversity of birds (as well as some monkeys). He was prompt, knowledgeable, and accommodating to our preferences of photography subject matter. We are experienced birders and particular regarding our tours, and he exceeded expectations. We definitely would use him again for another private tour.
Mario was the perfect nature tour guide! He was very knowledgeable and helped us locate and view so many bird species as well as many mammals, and a sloth! Since this was our first time to Panamá, he oriented us to the Gamboa and Pipeline Trail area as well. He was such an enthusiastic and persistent guide and kept ebird lists for me so that I could just relax and enjoy the wildlife! We could not have asked for a better experience!
We highly recommend this bird and nature sightseeing experience. Mario was a wonderful guide, and his knowledge of birds and wildlife is impressive and matches his passion for nature. Before we even entered Soberania National Park, Mario pointed out agoutis, as well as a sloth and toucans that we were able to enjoy with his telephoto lens and binoculars. The park itself is also amazing - only about an hour's drive from Panama City, we were able to get fully immersed in nature, seeing and/or hearing birds, howler monkeys, frogs, snakes, and leaf cutter ants, and appreciating the lush vegetation of the rain forest. At the end of our walking tour, Mario surprised us with delicious pineapple and ice cold water that we thoroughly enjoyed in his air-conditioned van. We were back at our hotel by 12 noon (pick up was 6 am), leaving the rest of the day free for other activities. This experience is perfect for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. If we return to Panama in the future, we would definitely consider booking another tour with Mario. He is a terrific guide!
We saw a lot of birds, as well as Agoutis, a blue morpho butterfly, a sleeping sloth, leaf cutter ants and howler monkeys. Mario is a great spotter, was flexible but had planned out the tour well, really wanted to show us everything we wanted to see, and brought snacks!
Mario, our guide, for the bird sightseeing tour, was outstanding. We saw between 70 and 100 different species of birds. Quite frankly, I lost count as the day progressed because I was more interested in identifying those I photographed. I was all about the quality, not quantity! To start, Mario picked us up at our hotel--and was 10 minutes early, which meant the sightseeing start early! Our goal was to get to Soberania National Park, but we made several stops along the way and before we even got to the NP, we must have seen 50 different species of birds and several mammals. My wish list was a small one-to see a toucan. This was checked off my list before we got to the park! Mario is very kind and accommodating and he is an expert birder --he seems to have bionic eyes and ears and the patience of a saint! Between his own ability to use bird calls and an app he uses on his phone, we dubbed him the bird whisperer. So many species of birds joined us! On the way back to our hotel, Mario was determined to locate more birds and made additional pitstops. I cannot recommend this tour enough, Mario is one of the best guides we've ever had!
Mario is an expert in birding and his passion for these beloved creatures is truly apparent. He created a unique day of magic for us with his expertise and in-depth knowledge of birding. He identified the birds by their calls and behaviors and readily shared the information - all through the day. Photo opportunities were plentiful with optimal backgrounds to highlight each species unique behaviors, markings and colors. This daytrip was more than bird-watching; it was a day of bird and nature immersion. Our time with Mario was a highlight of our trip!
Our guide Clari was amazing. We saw 45 different species of birds. I could not have seen even half as many on my own and I wouldn't have known what they were. She could hear a bird, identify them by sound and find them with her spotting scope. This was truly an amazing adventure! Thank you Clari!!!!
Although I selected the “Pipeline road” tour, this week I took two full day birding tours with Mario. We went to Anton Valley one day and Guna Yala another day. I had birded Pipeline with Mario 10 years ago and I can just say that he truly outdid himself. It was the best birding I have ever done and Mario is such a KIND, GENEROUS guide and human being. We saw 125 species of birds the first day and 113 on the other day, and Mario catered the trips specifically to target birds (life birds) I had been wanting to see, the vast majority of which (among those actually possible) we found! Furthermore, he is extremely reasonably priced and which honestly wouldn’t even matter either way as the birding with him is so productive. He is great at spotting and has a sharp ear, and he knows people and secret spots for target birds. He isn’t your average Panama guide associated with Canopy Company, etc — he is an elite birder and top-tier person. 1000% recommend.
Mario is an amazing guide and birdwatcher. He took us to Parque Sobrerania where we saw over 40 species of birds (including a blue cotinga, a motmot, toucans, and oscellated antbirds), not to mention a whole bunch of other animals (including monkeys and sloths). We would go on another tour with Mario in a heartbeat. He is the best!
Mario, the guide, was extremely enthousiastic. He was really good at spotting birds and all other kinds of animals! We saw so many species so close, it was wonderful! As a flight attendant I get to do a lot of tours around the world but Mario was really one of the best guides I’ve ever had. I do really recommend this trip!!
I have done 2 or 3 international birding trips a year to different continents for the last 20 years and Mario is amongst the best guides I have ever had. He has great skills, is extremely personable, energetic and enthusiastic and we loved our three full days with him (two along Pipeline and one to El Valle). Panama is tough, often sweaty forest birding but Mario was superb at finding great birds, using playback and scope excellently, and he was super-generous with his time and effort (and good value compared to other options; we had one shocking day with another guide when M was busy). We are serious world birders and, with Mario’s help, we found key species like Tody Motmot, Great Jacamar and Streak-chested Antpitta and he was highly engaging company, informing us about other aspects of Panama. Hugely recommended; thank you Mario!
Our guide Samuel picked us up at the cruise terminal promptly at 5:30 am. Samuel was very knowledgeable about the birds and was conversant in other subjects as well. He spotted over 50 species of birds, many of which we got a good look at through his scope.
Amazing Tour observing Wildlife! Mario has an astonishing knowledge concerning not only Birds but all the other Wildlife we encounterd. We saw all kinds of amazing birds (which Mario could all name) monkeys, sloths, a coati and diverse reptilies. Mario was really invested in us having a great experience and we did. A definite recomendation for all nature enthusiasts!!!
We had a fantastic day with Mario. He was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject of birding yet he tailored our tour according to our own level of knowledge. He went out of his way to show us different and unusual things but was also conscious of our need to rest, drink and eat. Mario knew all the specific habitats where particular birds would be found and targeted our tour to find very specific species. We would highly recommend him to anyone interested in the wide variety of birds in Panama. If we return to Panama we would definitely seek him out to explore other birding regions. Thank you Mario for the most memorable day of our visit to Panama.
Mario was INCREDIBLE! He is so passionate about wildlife and really anticipated all of our needs. When I realized my camera lens didn't have a sufficient zoom for some of the birds we were spotting, he actually let me borrow his to get some of the shots I was hoping for. SO kind! He has an amazing eye for finding the most camouflaged creatures...you'll just be driving along and he will casually pull the car over, set up the viewing scope, and voila! "There's a sloth." "Here are some howler monkeys and their babies." "That's an iguana on those rocks." "See the toucan there?" He has bug spray, he has bird calls, he has delicious snacks. (In my case, they had to be gluten-free and he took note to make it happen!) Mario moves quickly enough to help you see lightning-fast birds, yet never makes you feel rushed. He's a problem solver and loves what he does. Do not see Panama with anyone else! Thank you, Mario. We can't wait to come back!
The visit to Panama is not complete without a visit to this lively natural park and our guide Mario was amazing, did everything to show us as many birds as possible. We highly recommend! We love the experience. Helena and Pedro.
Had a great day with Mario. We really enjoyed and saw a lot. Mario is friendly, knows how to find the birds well and his enthusiasm for birding is palpable and infectious. At 6 o'clock sharp he was on the sidewalk and we drove to Gamboa for the first birds. Beautiful toucans, tanagers and more. Then to several places including the pipeline road. In the end we saw 72 species of birds. We can't recommend anything but Mario wholeheartedly.
Mario is a very experienced guide with immense knowledge of the plants and wildlife in the national park. He was very attuned to our wishes, so in addition to wonderful bird watching we could also see monkeys and especially sloths. A spectacular day that we will surely remember for a long time to come. Thank you very much, Mario!
It was such a fun tour to see so many amazing bird and animal species. The guide was very knowledgeable about living things and also discovered many animals.
Wir hatten eine sehr erlebnisreiche Fahrt. Vielen Dank an unseren Guide, er hat uns unzählige Tiere des Regenwaldes gezeigt. Wir können die Tour mit ihm nur empfehlen.
