If you are visiting Oxford this tour with a student or alum is a must. Our tour guide, Saga, was excellent. She walked us through the different colleges and along the way told us loads about the history of each site but also described student life. We all received our own listening device so that we could easily hear Saga from where ever she was. This tour was well organized and small enough to be manageable. If you go, I'd suggest requesting Saga as your tour guide.
Excellent tour with lots of history and personal anecdotes of Sam's experiences at the university.
My guide was Eloise. She was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour interesting and fun. We greatly enjoyed the tour.
Excellent guide loads of additional information and extremely informative
Tour made by the guide. Sam Day is very knowledgeable, approachable and witty. Loads of stories delivered with aplomb. He goes above and beyond.
Riccardo is a good guide. His Doctorate in history was clearly evident in all the background he gave on all the sites we visited. A nice person who answered all questions with interest and insight.
Sam was our delightful guide. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Oxford and the daily campus life. He had amusing stories both historical and personal. I highly recommend the tour and Sam
Five of us enjoyed a marvelous, three hour tour of Oxford led by Elliot, PhD student from Wales at University College. I had never been to Oxford before and didn't understand the UK or Oxford college system at all. Not only did he do a brilliant job of explaining it to us, but he also dazzled us with his knowledge of history, both medieval and religious while touring us to many beautiful quads, churches, and libraries. He was funny, clever, and extremely intelligent and kept five 60+ year old Americans entertained for the whole tour.
We loved this private guided tour and we especially loved our guide! Sam Day was a delight. A recent alum of Oxford, he had loads of inside stories about student life, alumni, and history of the colleges. We could never in a million years have discovered the information and insights about Oxford without him. It made British history, famous British alumni antics and the history and current life of the town come alive. Given that it is 600 years to cover, that is quite a feat! We especially appreciated the way he tied everything together with wit and insight. His tour is a "tour de force" and highly enjoyable way to learn about Oxford. And, Sam was a genuinely engaging and lovely human being. Highly recommend this tour and this guide!
Jen was a very engaging and enjoyable guide. We loved hearing her perspectives as a student in Oxford.
Just to clarify, I booked the 2-hour free tour instead of the 3-hour tour, but since I couldn't find where to post a review for it, I'm leaving it here. Owen was a fantastic guide! Even with a large group, he was extremely thoughtful and planned out our restroom stops and route seamlessly. It was such a great opportunity to explore Oxford alongside an actual Oxford student. Not only did we get to hear fascinating insider stories only students would know, but Owen was also incredibly enthusiastic in sharing his academic journey with parents and offering valuable guidance for the kids.
Ross was the besttttttt! He was very knowledgeable!
Amazing experience, intellectually enriching and engaging, such a beautiful way to learn about the complex and important history of Oxford and how it intertwines to modern day Oxford now, our guide; Sam Day, was absolutely superb, exceptionally knowledgeable and keen to engage, he had such an extensive and intriguing script with facts that will definitely stick for times to come. Thank you. - Lily 03/10/26
Great walking tour with Ross! Very informative and easy walk. Saw all the main sites and got history, stories and inside scoop on student life and experiences. Gorgeous sites, friendly guide and staff along the way. Awesome intro to Oxford! One tip: Use the restroom first. To use the restroom at the Oxford Tourist Info Centre where you start, you have to buy something at the cafe next door (albeit with a footprints tours 10% discount). Before going to start of tour, use public toilets a few blocks away or those in a pub or other locale. Enjoy!
Patrick was an excellent tour guide. Super welcoming and friendly and very knowledgeable on Oxford! Would definitely recommend to a friend :)
Run, don’t walk to the 3-hour walking tour experience with Sam! A truly established Oxford alumnus (3 degrees, so far) he is a veritable encyclopedia of colleges’ history and lore, university culture, and so much more. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll actually remember the fascinating tales of the people and the stories that make Oxford a special place. He will answer all your questions and even hang out a bit afterwards to share his top picks for pubs and cafes. We highly recommend this tour with Sam. He made our brief visit to Oxford so enjoyable and meaningful.
Guide Hannah was hilarious!! Very entertaining and informative…
Wonderful tour, some of the colleges were close due to graduation etc. However our guide did the everything to give us the extra and the best tour. Can’t recommend it enough!
Sam Day gave a remarkable, knowledgeable and humorous tour. A good sign of an excellent walking tour is not noticing the time pass or feeling fatigue. Sam’s story-telling was constantly engaging. He has a talent that I am sure would serve him well at the lectern. As I write this, I am trying to find a fly in the ointment, but can think of none. Oh wait, the terrible imitation of the Australian accident - unforgivable! We wish Sam well in the pursuit of his academic career, and thank him for sharing with us his enthusiasm for Oxford.
Amazing experience with Ross! Very entertaining and enjoyable few hours showing us around Oxford University.
Wonderful three hour private tour for seven with Elliot. Very knowledgeable and fun. Able to focus tour on Lewis, Tolkien and Newman. Highly recommend!
Elliot was an outstanding guide for our tour of Oxford — genuinely one of the best we've had. He explained the university's unique college system clearly, which helped us understand how Oxford actually works before we began the tour. He took us to exactly the sites we'd hoped to see: the Weston and Bodleian Libraries, Magdalen College, and Christ Church Cathedral and brought them all to life for us with stories of historical events and personal experiences that made the tour very memorable. Along the way he also pointed out some local spots we wouldn't have found on our own, like Blackwell's Bookstore and the Covered Market. Elliot's knowledge of Oxford's history and academic culture was impressive, but what made the tour special was how engaging and charming he was throughout — he made the whole experience interesting from start to finish. Highly recommend him to anyone visiting Oxford.
It was great! Elliot, our guide, was amazing! He was intelligent, informative, and friendly. He spoke clearly and kept it all interesting, even for the non/history buffs in our group. His backstories were fascinating and added more interest to everything he talked about. Would highly recommend him and the tour!
Our tour guide was Sam Day, he was excellent. His knowledge was comprehensive and delivered with humour. I would recommend anyone visiting Oxford to do the free tour and if possible do it with Sam. Thank you so much for making our visit so enjoyable. Norman & Jude (Tenby)
We had a fabulous two-hour private walking tour of Oxford with Eloise the archaeologist, and we can’t recommend her highly enough. Eloise is also a recent Oxford graduate, which added such a wonderful dimension to the experience. In addition to learning about Oxford’s magnificent buildings and centuries of history, we loved hearing her stories about what student life at Oxford is actually like. Eloise was incredibly knowledgeable—she knew her dates, had fascinating stories to share, and brought Oxford’s history to life in a way that was both informative and entertaining. She had also taken the time to consider some of the interests and requests we had shared in advance and incorporated additional stories and details especially for us. Her energy and enthusiasm were delightful, and she was simply a pleasure to spend two hours with. We were amazed by how much we were able to see and learn in just two hours. Oxford is filled with extraordinary buildings, traditions, and historical details that would be very easy to walk right past without understanding their significance. Unless you are visiting with someone who already knows Oxford extremely well, I think taking a guided tour is an absolute must. If you are deciding between a group tour and a private tour, I would highly recommend the private option if you have the opportunity. It was just my husband and me with Eloise, which allowed us to ask questions, linger over things that interested us, and navigate a very busy Oxford much more easily. We got so much more out of our visit because of it. Our tour with Eloise the archaeologist was one of the highlights of our time in Oxford and an excellent way to experience this remarkable city. Highly recommend! (Note - We did a 2-hour private tour - not 3-hour)
Hannah was an exceptional tour guide and made everything fun while educational. She was able to answer a lot of questions for us! Definitely recommend it!
great and informative trip. Nice Guide
Oscar was the best guide we could've asked for. The guide was very interactive and gun and i learned alot about history of Oxford University and the city itself. I would recommend booking with Oscar, he's a natural!
Isabel was knowledgeable, good pace for tour. A terrific way to see Oxford
We had to find a last minute tour bc our originally booked guide didn’t show. In an effort to recover the day, we went into the Oxford Information Center and the staff very quickly helped us book a new tour. We had Russ walk us around Oxford and two colleges. He kept the content interesting and very informative. I had two young kids aged 10 and 12 and they stayed engaged. Would definitely recommend!
This was a fantastic walking tour of Oxford. Our guide, Ross, a Ph.D Oxford graduate, was very well informed both of the colleges at Oxford and the history of the area and university. My wife and I have done many tours over the years, and Ross was one of the best and most engaging guides we’ve had.
EJ was a great and knowledgeable guide. Thank you.
The guided tour led by Shree, a PhD student, was very interesting. It was especially valuable because she also shared her own experience as a student and was able to answer all our questions about the history of Oxford University and the way of life of Oxford community. The only downside of the tour, was that despite the tour description, a visit to the Bodleian Library was not included! This was the only thing made us slightly disappointed!
Sam Day was our fabulous Oxford alumni guide. He shared so many interesting things about the university and history and the buildings and life of a student. He is so smart and fun! Our group size was fine and the amount of walking was ok. We had a bathroom break. Meeting place was clear. Highly recommend!
Sam (Day) was fabulous, recalling stories about Oxford University and Brasenose, being the college he attended throughout the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable and the manner in which he interacted with our group all added to our enjoyment of the afternoon.
Ryan was absolutely brilliant - knowledgeable, loud, clear and animated. Don’t be put off by two hours of walking. There are many stops in total about 3,000 and plenty of stops to sit down. Fabulous value forMoney as entrance to two buildings included. We couldn’t get tickets to the bodlian library but they were included on this tour. Ryan was really thoughtful- it was a hot day and wherever we stopped he made sure we had shade. 5 Stars to “Ryan the Townie” who really knows his stuff *****
George was the guide, who was informative and very personable. The tour was obviously well planned and reflective of the guide’s time spent at university. A highlight of the visit.
We had the best guide Charlotte , She knew so much and told us so many intersting things on the side . She made our trip definitely worth it !
If you are someone who already knows their way around Oxford’s rich history—or if you simply want a deep, authentic dive past the standard tourist script—taking a walking tour with Patrick is an absolute must. This tour delivered an intellectual and deeply personal exploration of the university. Patrick's profound grasp of Oxford’s history was matched only by his own lived experiences as a student within its walls. For history and education enthusiasts, or curious travelers this tour is exceptional. By grounding grand historical narratives in the reality of everyday student life, Patrick delivered an experience that was both intellectually satisfying and genuinely entertaining. Rating: 5/5 Stars
Excellent guide - both knowledgeable and personable!
A wonderful experience with a great atmosphere. The guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and thoughtful, offering fascinating insights from the perspective of an Oxford alumnus. It's an excellent way to see the main attractions in a short time while gaining a deeper understanding of the city's history and university life. Matteo, Italian tourist
Luke was an excellent Guide. We enjoyed the Tour very much.
Our guide, George, made the experience beautiful and captivating. Thank you!
Ryan was great and enthusiastic. Very well versed with the history and engaging storyteller.
Thor was a charismatic host, with good stories and an ability to interact well with the audience.
Tour guide, Thor, was awesome! Completely made the tour experience worthwhile and enjoyable! He was clearly passionate about the rich history of Oxford and very charismatic!
Thorstein (Thor) was such a great tour guide. He told us stories about his personal experience at Oxford, the Oxford University school life, Oxford university history. He made the entire 3 hours enjoyable and fun and even let us stop for drinks and rest. He was so detailed in everything he said and made sure the stories were funny and hit just right.
Ross was awesome and tour was great
By far and away the best guided I’ve ever been apart of. I wanna give a huge shout out to my guide Isabella! She is very friendly, informative, funny, and most importantly passionate. Honestly really inspirational to see someone who cares so much about what they are telling you about. We need more young people like her! Hope she goes far in her studies! Thank you for showing me your beautiful city!
