The Lamb Inn Great Rissington

A beautiful country inn with so much going for it, but the hospitality needs some attention We have just returned from a lovely weekend in the Cotswolds, staying for one night at The Lamb Inn in beautiful Great Rissington. It's a charming, characterful country pub in an idyllic setting, and there were many aspects of our stay that we genuinely enjoyed. We stayed in the Northleach Suite, a wonderfully quirky and comfortable room with a beautiful freestanding roll-top bath. We also enjoyed a relaxing afternoon downstairs playing cards over a few drinks, soaking up the lovely atmosphere. Unfortunately, the service rather let the experience down. We had reserved a table for dinner at 7pm, but after being seated were left for 45 minutes without anyone approaching us to offer drinks, provide menus or even acknowledge us. Eventually, my husband went to ask for assistance. To his credit, the gentleman who came over apologised and kindly offered us a complimentary glass of wine each, which was much appreciated. The food was very good, particularly my steak tartare, but the service remained rather impersonal. There was very little interaction from some of the waiting staff, with dishes delivered without the usual friendly enquiries about whether everything was satisfactory or if we needed anything else. After a comfortable night's sleep, we discovered that the beautiful bath took approximately 30 minutes to fill due to the extremely slow water flow. As this was our only means of washing, it was rather inconvenient during a one-night stay. Breakfast was a pleasant continental offering, but again the service was disappointing. Arriving at 9am, we found several items unavailable, tables uncleared and just one member of staff seemingly trying to manage everything. There was no greeting or explanation, and we were left waiting for food to be replenished. At checkout, there was similarly no enquiry about our stay or whether we had enjoyed ourselves. We are very easy-going guests and rarely leave reviews, but felt this was worth sharing constructively. We don't expect to be fussed over, and fully appreciate the pressures of working in hospitality. However, a friendly greeting, a little eye contact and checking that guests have everything they need can make an enormous difference. The Lamb Inn has so much in its favour: a wonderful setting, lovely accommodation, delicious food and a delightful country pub atmosphere. With a little more attention to the basics of customer service, the experience could be every bit as special as the surroundings. We hope these observations are received in the constructive spirit intended.

I haven't stayed here, but we did dine here. My husband and I had the gluten-free fish and chips and the fish was outstanding - better than regular fish & chips. The pickles starter was also excellent. Nice selection of drinks and the mixed drinks were executed perfectly. The staff was friendly and helpful and attentive. Must come back for another delicious meal.

The milk bread was so light and fluffy! We loved it so much, we ordered a second one! We both had the beef roast, and honestly, it was one of the best roasts we’ve had in a long time. Absolutely delicious! All the staff were absolute gems - so lovely, friendly and welcoming. The whole experience was fantastic from start to finish.

My daughter regularly visits The Lamb inn at Great rissington and we decided to pop in for lunch as I hadn't visited before. Robin made us very welcome along with the friendly staff. With it having to be a swift visit I had a starter spiced scotch egg which came accompanied with a delightful light sauce my daughter had the same it was absolutely delicious we also had coffee. The staff at this pub is absolutely first class and the pub itself is beautiful and spacious. I will definitely visit again very soon with friends to sample the rest of the menu especially the Sunday roast that looks amazing. Thank you very much.
