From some of the reviews I was a bit worried about staying here, but I was delighted that it was a really good stay! The room was very large with a comfortable bed, very clean and well presented. The bathroom was good, waterfall shower, free shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel, and clean towels. Tea and coffee and biscuits provided. Staff helpful and friendly. Plenty of free parking at the back of the hotel. Obviously the building is old, so there's a couple of points where a bit of paint would help, but it's nothing like the reviews some others have left. Didn't use the breakfast but it smelled good. The bar was pleasant with good selection of drinks. The only downside was that one of the pillows was a bit lumpy. But there were three others so that's fine.

Extremely disappointing stay and poor customer service I have stayed at the Chequers Hotel numerous times over the years and have always recommended it as part of our annual trip. Sadly, this stay was extremely disappointing. Room 115 was wholly unsuitable for two adults. The bed was so small and positioned against the wall that my partner was unable to sleep in it and ended up sleeping on the floor, waking in considerable discomfort. The room was also excessively hot and stuffy, and the fan provided made little difference. Neither of us had a proper night's sleep, which significantly affected our weekend. After complaining, we were moved to another room, which had a large stain on the bedsheet that appeared to be urine, mould in the ceiling corners and peeling paint. I also found the original room extremely distressing and suffered panic attacks as a result. I complained to the hotel and requested a full refund. Rather than addressing the cleanliness, maintenance and sleeping issues, their response focused on the fact that we had booked a “Cozy Double”. We were offered just £20 compensation, which was completely inadequate. Despite sending further emails asking them to reconsider, the hotel refused to respond any further. Our party consisted of 10 people, and as a longstanding returning customer, I found the way this matter was handled particularly disappointing. I have photographs documenting the issues and I will attach the stained bedding. I provided these to the receptionist at the time who was disgusted with it and advised I could have a full refund but she was not authorised to give it, directing me to email them… which they are clearly now not responding to. I have given them 2 weeks to rectify this issue and would never normally bring a business down however, having seen the way they treat their returning customers I am utterly disgusted and disappointed. After years of staying at and recommending this hotel, this experience has completely changed my opinion. I would not recommend the Chequers Hotel and would not stay here again.
Rooms are a death trap. You have no room to walk from the bed to the bath room without tripping over a chair and the bed, over a stool and the bed, over a chair and the bed, or best of all: between a half foot high, half foot wide step in the floor going around the entire room, and the bed. Try that in the middle off the night and you'll literally break your neck. To top it off, you have to bend your knees to sit on the John. And hold on for dear life when you climb into our out of the tub.
A lovely quirky hotel. The food is excellent and all the staff are brilliant. Ive had a really nice stay.
Fantastic location, in Center of Newbury. On site parking. Welcoming staff. Our room was ok, little dated and issues with flickering lights. No TV remote. Bath with shower which was pretty weak, though hot. Bathroom also in need of a refresh. Breakfast was nice. Reasonably priced. I would give the hotel a 3* rating rather than 4.
