We had a great day with J - he was very good at finding us things we wanted to see that are not on the standard tours, like the library and some quiet gardens, while also getting us to the more well known locations where his insight and information was very welcome. His food recommendations were excellent as well. We ended up walking about 11 miles / 18 km, which worked for us, but might not be for everyone.

Shitennoji is one of Japan's oldest temples, offering a glimpse into centuries of Buddhist culture. The calm atmosphere, grand five-story pagoda, and beautiful stone gardens create a serene escape from the city. The temple grounds are rich with history, and you can feel the spiritual energy as you walk through the peaceful courtyards. Whether you're seeking a quiet moment or curious about ancient Japanese architecture, Shitennoji is a must-visit in Osaka.
Shinsekai is where Osaka's retro soul comes to life. Walking through its bustling streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a vibrant time capsule of mid-20th century Japan. Tsutenkaku Tower stands tall, watching over the area, while the smell of sizzling kushikatsu fills the air. This is a district for adventurers—whether you're eating your way through its street food stalls or exploring its quirky shops, Shinsekai offers a flavor of Osaka that’s totally unique.
If you love food, Kuromon Market is paradise. Known as "Osaka’s Kitchen," this lively market is packed with stalls selling the freshest seafood, meats, and local delicacies. Whether you’re sampling grilled squid or feasting on sashimi, the market buzzes with energy and flavor. Every corner has something tempting, from sushi to fruit to sweets. It’s a perfect spot to immerse yourself in Osaka’s vibrant food culture and taste the city’s soul.
Osaka Castle is a symbol of the city's rich history, standing proudly amid lush gardens and moats. As you approach the towering structure, its striking beauty and massive stone walls impress, while the history inside the museum draws you into the age of samurais and feudal lords. The view from the top deck offers sweeping cityscapes, blending the past and present of Osaka. It’s a timeless experience, perfect for anyone with a love of history and grand architecture.
Umeda Sky Building is a modern architectural marvel. Its glass and steel towers connected by a floating observatory offer one of the best views in the city. As you ascend to the observatory, you can feel the excitement build, and once you step onto the open-air deck, the panoramic view of Osaka is breathtaking. It’s a spot that combines futuristic design with a sense of awe, making it perfect for those who love great views and innovative architecture.
Dotonbori is the beating heart of Osaka’s entertainment and nightlife scene. The neon lights reflecting off the canal, the giant billboards, and the endless food stalls create an electric atmosphere that’s hard to resist. Whether you’re enjoying iconic street foods like takoyaki or simply soaking up the lively energy, Dotonbori is a sensory experience like no other. It’s where Osaka’s playful spirit shines brightest, making it a place you simply cannot miss.
Just steps away from the bustling streets of Namba, Hozenji Yokocho feels like a different world. This narrow alley, lined with traditional restaurants and shops, exudes old-world charm. At its heart is the small but atmospheric Hozenji Temple, where you can see visitors splash water on the moss-covered statue for good luck. The alley's nostalgic atmosphere makes it a perfect place for a quiet evening, offering a glimpse of the Osaka that still honors its past.Just steps away from the bustling streets of Namba, Hozenji Yokocho feels like a different world. Niko was an amazing guide! He was so considerate of our comfort and safety given the horrible weather. His pace was perfect for our needs and situation. Very thoughtful young man. His knowledge base was excellent as well.
Niko was a wonderful guide. He was very knowledgeable. Answered questions. He was friendly and made the tour a great success.
Nico was amazing. Great tour - despite the pouring rain!
Our private walking tour of the highlights of Osaka was absolutely perfect in every respect. Our guide met us at our hotel, and after a warm greeting established our priorities, and from there we embarked on an absolutely fabulous experience. We thoroughly explored the Osaka Castle- both the grounds and environs, as well as the interior- in a seamless and comprehensive fashion. The remainder of the day was occupied by enjoying a variety of sites, including ancient temples, shrines, having an informal lunch in a delightful local restaurant, and enjoying an iconic walking street lined with whimsical figures and statues interspersed with colorful decorations, lanterns, and statuettes. Finally, our guide was awesome in every respect- knowledgeable, wonderful personality, extremely bright and intelligent, and who spoke perfect English, having lived and had family lineage in New Zealand. This was altogether the best touring experience of our lives!
Niko was amazing! First, he was very flexible with us being late. Next, he asked what we would like to do, and he was very knowledgeable about the area and took us to some popular locations like Osaka castle, but then to some lesser known areas with a terrific local feel, historic atmosphere and great food. As we walked around he shared history of the area which we would not have learned if we were not with him. Thanks, Niko!
J was a great guide, and we had a lovely time throughout the tour. Food was great with good portions, and the history of the area was really well delivered. Great time!
Taro was an excellent guide and very flexible about our tour. For lunch he took us to a little local restaurant, great food and company. He had a great sense of humour which is important to Australians. He managed all the trains and dearest and I are still married!
Yuta, our guide, was incredible. Showing us around all the major sites and cool places to eat. He was very positive and answered all sorts of our questions. He was great and the tour was superb!
The tour consisted of some historical spots, some pop culture spots, and a few shopping/food streets. It is a long tour to be walking so being well-fed and well-caffeinated helped a lot! Yuta was such a great tour guide; he was very informative about the history of the sights we saw but also about Japanese culture in general.
Yuta our tour guide took us to some great spots around Osaka. The weather was very hot. Good pace
We did the 4 hour walking tour with our guide Mr Jay who picked us up from the hotel . And guided us to the Osaka castle and the shopping street , 307 year old shop of Osaka , the hotel equipments area and the animation shops and area . He was very helpful and patient with us . Highly recommended
MJ was great, showed us what we wanted to see and took us to a great lunch spot. Led us to perfect picture locations. Highly recommended
I purchased 4 hour private tour with local guide through Viator on May 12th. I wrote the message to the tour organizer -Kentaro Tsukada a day before stating three places I would like to visit and learn about. Those were the most popular places in Osaka: Osaka castle, Umeda sky observation building, and Shitennoji, The oldest temple in Osaka. When we met our tour guy next day, he was a very young kid name Nico, who told us that he’s been doing tours for only two months and he never done site seeing tours before, just shopping tours. He was absolutely unprepared for the tour he didn’t even know the basic information about Osaka or the sites we want to see and was more interested in chatting about life in general with us. We were constantly trying to redirect him, asking questions to provide any information about tour: the places we are heading to, but his answers were “I honestly don’t know.” Basically, he could not tell us anything about Umeda Sky observation building but when we went to Osaka castle, he pulled his iPad, google "Osaka castle" it in front of us and read us short info directly from Google. I just could not believe it!!!! At the end of the tour he told us that he got pulled last minute into this tour because someone who suppose to do it was not available. If he have said it in the beginning, I would have asked to cancel the tour or give us a different tour guide. I spent $260 on this tour for me and my friend, got zero information the only thing our tour guide new is the subway stations we need to take to get to our destinations. I asked for refund at least half of money paid, because the guide did hang 4 hours with us, but the company's (GOEN JAPAN TEAM) tour operator lied to Viator that the tour went well.
Ben was an excellent and knowledgeable guide for our 4-hr tour. He built a great itinerary for us, which included key sites, but also off the beaten touristy path. He also was a great teacher of local and Japanese culture. My favorite part was our lunch in a quieter neighborhood okonomiyaki restaurant, run by a husband, wife, and son team. We were told it was the best in the galaxy, and I’m inclined to believe it! Not only that, but they were so hospitable and kind.
Amazing tour. Delicious food. The best part was the guide.
When we read reviews of this company, they were great and we were excited to get this tour. We purchased 4-hour. I wrote the message to the tour organizer night before stating three places I would like to visit and learn about them, Osaka castle Shitennoji and Umeda sky observation building. When we met tour guy, he was a young kid, told us he has been doing this for 2 moths. He was absolutely unprepared for the tour. He did not even know a basic info such us when Osaka city was established, when Umeda building was build and who build it, what Shitennoji is representing etc. He was more interested in chatting about us, and life in general. We were constantly asking to provide some info about tour and places we are heading to. Almost every his answer was “I honestly don’t know.”, but finally, He pulled his iPad, Googled each location in front of us and just read to us really short piece of information about each stop. I just could not believe it! He was honest and told us that he got pulled last minute into this tour and never done tours like that before. That is really put a bad name on the company, who should be canceling our tour instead of proceed with basically nothing. I spent around $300, got zero information just to guide how to get places via the subway. I use Viator many times in my travels, always have a great experience. This is the first very bad one. I give this tour two stars, just because the young tour guy was very nice, and I believe it was not his fault to be thrown in such unfortunate situation. I will be asking Viator for refund.
We had a great day seeing all of the key sites in Osaka. Yuta was a great guide and adapted our tour as we went along. Ate at some non-touristy Japanese eateries along the way which was a highlight. Would highly recommend.
Yuto was absolutely incredible. He was extremely punctual (actually arriving 15 minutes before our scheduled meeting) and we were ready as well, so everything flowed perfectly from the start. He kindly took the time to ask what we were in the mood to do and seamlessly tailored the experience for us. We needed to shop for a few things, and he guided us to the best spots—places we would have never found on our own. What made the experience even more special was how he blended in beautiful sightseeing locations that were not crowded with tourists. It felt like we were discovering Osaka through a local’s eyes, which made everything so much more authentic and enjoyable. His restaurant recommendations were outstanding. Even though Osaka was incredibly busy, we didn’t have to wait in any lines, and the place he chose for us was absolutely amazing. Yuto is a true local who treats you like family visiting from abroad. He takes you to genuine, local spots and makes sure you feel taken care of every step of the way.
Awesome tour and guide. Had a great time seeing the city and learning about the culture. Would definitely suggest doing this tour.
