This was one of many highlights of our trip to Japan. The tour was in the Teema district of Osaka and our guide Mayura Kai was outstanding. We were a group of 8 friends and she made the tour such fun. Great food but learnt so much extra about Japanese culture as well as food as we toured round several small restaurants we might not otherwise have visited as well as sampling street food. Vibrant nightlife not to be missed

Itinerary
Experience Osaka through the eyes of a local as you explore Japan's great merchant city, where centuries of commerce, celebrated food culture, historic landmarks, and unmistakable local character have shaped one of the country's most dynamic destinations. Before your experience begins, you'll complete an online Personalization Form, allowing your host to tailor the day around your interests, whether you're passionate about history, architecture, food, local culture, hidden neighborhoods, or Osaka's iconic sights. Every experience is thoughtfully personalized, allowing your route to evolve naturally throughout the day based on your interests, the duration selected, the season, weather conditions, and local crowd levels. Here are some of the places your personalized experience may include:
For centuries, Namba has been one of Osaka's busiest gathering places. Today, its lively shopping arcades, entertainment streets, and famous food scene make it the energetic heart of the city and the perfect introduction to Osaka's unmistakable character.
Dotonbori has entertained visitors for more than 400 years. Once a theatre district, it is now famous for its neon billboards, canal, and legendary street food, capturing the lively spirit that has earned Osaka the nickname "Japan's Kitchen."
Cross one of Osaka's best-known bridges, where generations of merchants and visitors have gathered. Overlooking the Dotonbori Canal and the famous Glico sign, it remains one of the city's most photographed landmarks.
Hidden just behind Dotonbori, this narrow stone alley preserves the atmosphere of old Osaka. Traditional restaurants, lantern-lit pathways, and historic buildings offer a striking contrast to the city's modern skyline.
Beside the alley stands Hozenji Temple, famous for its moss-covered statue of Fudo Myoo. Visitors have poured water over the statue while praying for decades, creating one of Osaka's most distinctive and photographed spiritual landmarks.
Serving Osaka for nearly 200 years, Kuromon Market is known as "Osaka's Kitchen." Fresh seafood, seasonal produce, and regional specialties reflect the city's long-standing reputation as one of Japan's greatest culinary destinations.
Originally known for electronics, Den Den Town has grown into Osaka's centre for anime, manga, gaming, and Japanese pop culture. Its specialist stores and themed cafés make it a favourite destination for enthusiasts from around the world.
Stretching almost 600 metres beneath a covered arcade, Shinsaibashi-suji has been one of Osaka's busiest shopping streets since the Edo Period. Historic merchants now stand alongside modern retailers, reflecting the city's commercial heritage.
Known locally as Ame-mura, this neighbourhood became the centre of Osaka's youth culture during the 1970s. Street art, vintage fashion, independent cafés, and music venues continue to give the district its distinctive creative identity.
Built in the early twentieth century as a vision of the future, Shinsekai now celebrates Osaka's nostalgic side. Retro arcades, colourful signs, and local eateries preserve an atmosphere that has changed remarkably little over the decades.
Towering above Shinsekai since 1912, Tsutenkaku has become one of Osaka's enduring symbols. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower, it reflects the city's early embrace of modern engineering and is closely linked with Billiken, the local symbol of good fortune.
Tennoji Park offers a peaceful contrast to Osaka's bustling streets. Landscaped gardens, open lawns, and seasonal scenery surround several of the city's cultural landmarks, making it a favourite place for both locals and visitors to unwind.
Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, Shitennoji is considered Japan's oldest officially established Buddhist temple. Its elegant pagoda and peaceful grounds provide a fascinating glimpse into the origins of Japanese Buddhism. Separate admission applies to some areas.
Standing 300 metres tall, Abeno Harukas transformed Osaka's skyline when it opened. Visitors can enjoy impressive city views from its public spaces, while the observation deck is available separately for those wishing to experience panoramic views.
Situated between the Dojima and Tosabori Rivers, Nakanoshima Park reveals a more elegant side of Osaka. Historic civic buildings, graceful bridges, and seasonal rose gardens highlight the city's development as a centre of commerce and culture.
Completed in 1918, this striking Neo-Renaissance landmark reflects Osaka's prosperity during the early twentieth century. Its distinctive red-brick façade and beautifully restored interiors make it one of the city's architectural highlights.
For more than 1,000 years, Osaka Tenmangu Shrine has honoured Sugawara no Michizane, Japan's deity of learning. It is also home to the famous Tenjin Matsuri, one of the country's three great festivals.
Originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the sixteenth century, Osaka Castle played a pivotal role in Japan's unification. Today, its impressive stone walls, expansive parkland, and iconic keep remain among the city's most celebrated landmarks. Separate admission applies to the museum.
Experience daily life in Edo-period Osaka through detailed reconstructions of streets, homes, and merchant shops. This immersive museum offers a fascinating look at the city's past for visitors wishing to explore its exhibitions with separate admission.

Shingo was amazing. It was such an informative and interesting tour. Very much felt like a friend sharing the home town they love. He was so engaged and interesting. Right combination of comfortable and personal with a rich knowledge of the long history of the land and people of Japan. Very pleasant and engaging. Thank you for such a wonderful tour.
It was a wonderful evening with exzellent food. Thank you so much, dear Mayura Kai!
Excellent custom walking tour of Osaka. Taku was our fantastic guide. Very informative with a lovely manner. Highly recommended
Maria was an absolute joy to be with in exploring Osaka!! She gave us great information on the history and cultural traditions. Our lunch was fun and delicious. We would definitely recommend Maria for this private tour.
Excellent experience. Our guide was wonderful. We saw much more than we had anticipated in a four hour tour. Highly recommended.
Excellent guide . Explained everything well and showed us beautiful places.
Very interesting and enjoyable introductory tour with Max. Max was informative, articulate, intelligent and very personable. We highly recommend this tour.
We had a great tour with Maria. She took us to some pretty hidden spots and went out of her way to help us see everything we wanted to see.
What an incredible experience exploring Osaka with Maria! We wandered from the dazzling bright lights, bustling streets and enormous shops into tiny backstreets and hidden alleyways that felt like stepping back in time. From the old theatre district to tucked-away food spots and bars, meeting fascinating characters along the way, it was a wonderful journey through so many different sides of Osaka. Maria brought it all to life, and I honestly couldn’t have hoped for a better experience. Highly recommended!
Perfect tour. Will highly recommend it. Our guide Mayura was excellent. We had a limited time in the city and she showed us around Osaka in the best possible way and made excellent use of our time. We had a very nice experience and will recommend this to anyone who wants a customised guided tour to have flavour of the city in a short time
Our personal shopping guide in Osaka was Kai and we could not have had a better and more passionate guide to help us. We only had one morning in Osaka and had noted a myriad of items to purchase as souvenirs and memorabilia. Kai found us in our hotel on time and had already made a plan based on our initial conversations via WhatsApp. It was a national holiday so the shops and trains were exceptionally busy but Kai knew all the little side routes and ways to avoid the queues and waiting times. She listened careful to our full list of shopping and immediately had ideas on how to address each item. She was helpful and provided advice and useful feedback on the items we were purchasing. I would highly recommend Kai to anyone looking for shopping, food or walking guides in Osaka. Thank you for your help Kai.
My guide Max was extremely chill. I enjoyed the conversations we had. He explained each area we visited in great detail. Highly recommended guide!
Great day with some off the beaten track places to discover in Osaka. Our guide Maria was wonderful, and gave us plenty of great recommendations.
It's honestly incredible. Miki was so kind and arrived at our meeting place early. We took public transit, and she took me to different restaurants and they were all really amazing. She took me to temples and explained everything to me as we went along. Miki was extremely courteous, kind and patient. The only thing I need to mention is that the traveler is responsible for their tour guide's costs as well as their own.
We did a 4 hour walking tour of Osaka with Maria. She had great communication before our tour through WhatsApp and answered any questions. I asked her to divide the 4 hours between shrines and food and she did an excellent job. I highly recommend anyone visiting Osaka to book her.
Our guide Mayura lead us on an amazing food tour which included street food, small eateries and a neighborhood restaurant for a full meal. The tour included many landmarks and insights on Japanese culture. The food was delicious, the company enjoyable, and we learned and saw so much in 3 hours. One of the best memories of this trip to Osaka.
Kai was terrific. Very knowledgeable, excellent English and a really good itinerary. Highly recommended!
Max was amazing. He showed us all around Osaka on a full day tour. He’s English is great, he was well educated on everything we did and saw. Highly recommend this tour
Despite intense heat, Mayura Kai led us on a wonderful 8 hour tour in Osaka. We saw the sights we wanted to see (Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, Dontonbori, etc) and took a lovely break from the heat for an indoor experience that Kai suggested (painting Daruma Dolls). Later that evening Kai guided us on a food tour that was a lot of fun.
Kai was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable about the places we visited, but also any random questions we had. Overall great experience.
Kai was a wonderful guide! We saw major attractions and off the beaten path side streets. We loved it!
Excellent tour of Osaka! We loved our guide, Kai. She was knowledgeable and engaging.
Hakim was great with the pace, knowledge, and explanation. Very enjoyable afternoon and we felt very well taken care of. Highly recommend.
Karim was a good tour guide. He had knowledgeable insights as to the Osaka Castle.
He gives many guides of Osaka.
We had a great time seeing Osaka highlights and eating lunch at the fish market. Taku was a great guide!
My family and I took the “Private Osaka Tour with a local, Custom highlights & hidden gems with Viator on 6/21/26 and having Maria as our guide was the highlight of our trip. She is incredibly nice, knowledgeable, engaging, friendly & brought Osaka’s history to life with her story telling. I especially appreciated how she accommodated our group’s pace & gave us amazing recommendations for store shopping, restaurants and introduce us to Billiken. She also went above and beyond in locating and purchasing a CD that my daughter likes before meeting up and gave her a gift as well. I can honestly say that she takes great pride in her work and leaves a lasting impression to tourists like us to visit Osaka again. I highly recommend requesting Maria for anyone visiting Osaka
This tour allowed us to view all the major attractions of Osaka. Mayura Kai was very knowledgeable. We greatly appreciated her patience and flexibility.
Great night out. Highly informative. Highly recommended, especially for good food spots
Mayu did a great job for our 2 hour tour. She met up with us at our hotel at 1 pm, and we visited and took photos at Namba Yasaka Shrine, Kuromon Market (a covered indoor/outdoor market with a wonderful collection of small businesses that specialize in sushi, sea food, tokoyaki, Wagyu Beef, Mochi, sweets, and many others), photos at energetic Dotonburi and the 2 bridges, photos near the Glico man sign, photos outside Don Quijote, Hozenji temple, and photos at quiet Hozenji Yokocho Alley. Mayu completed the tour by walking us back to our hotel. After the fantastic tour with Mayu we went to quiet Hozenji Yokocho Alley at 5 pm and ate incredible Wagyu at Kitashinchi Harami Hozenji. The restaurant was fully booked the entire evening, but they kindly offered us a table if we could finish our meal before 6:50. It was the best Wagyu meal ever! We went to Dotobori, and purchased a roller suitcase at Don Quijote (needed for the souvenirs for the trip home). We rolled our newly purchased roller suitcase all over Dotonbori and experienced the neon lights and high energy at Dotonbori topped by soft served Cremia Ice cream at Excelsior Cafe (possibly the best ice cream we have ever tasted). Mayu gave a fun and highly informative tour and many useful tips that we were able to use immediately during our 1 day visit to Osaka. We highly recommend Mayu as a tour guide and highly recommend a visit to Osaka - the “food capital of Japan.”
Our guide, Max, was wonderful. Although it was a rainy day, we had plenty to explore. From the huge train station, to several malls, parks, and Osaka Castle. Max really knows his way around this fun city. He even took a side trip that we requested for fluffy pancakes, which we highly recommend.
We had a great time with Taku san. He shared various details of their culture along with hidden gems. We visited multiple areas in Osaka and enjoyed authentic food. Very helpful overall.
Our tour in Osaka was one of the best experiences of our trip to Japan. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and made the entire tour fun while showing us amazing spots throughout the city. Everything was very organized, and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Osaka.
My daughter and I took a 4 hour foodie & shopping tour with Kanna from City Unscripted. She was absolutely amazing, completely tailored our tour to what we wanted.
Our tour guide was Kalid El Barraq, and let me start by saying: he is the best! He arrived on time to pick us up at the hotel and followed the itinerary perfectly. He knew exactly where we were going and the best way to get there. At every place we visited, he took the time to explain the history and details of the location. His knowledge is truly amazing. He was polite, professional, and attentive throughout the entire day, always making sure we were comfortable and enjoying the experience. We highly recommend him as your tour guide! Suely, Steve, Vivi, Simone
We had a great tour with Khalid! He adjusted to focus on activities the kids would enjoy and made sure we took breaks along the way. We saw so many great places in just a few hours, and he made many recommendations for additional places to go later in our trip.
We had an absolutely incredible experience exploring Osaka with Kalid. From the very beginning, he was warm, professional, and genuinely passionate about sharing the city with us. His knowledge of Osaka’s history, culture, food, and hidden gems was outstanding, and he made every part of the tour engaging and memorable. What really stood out was how helpful and attentive he was throughout the day. He tailored the experience perfectly to our interests, answered every question with enthusiasm, and made us feel completely comfortable and welcomed. It felt less like a standard tour and more like discovering Osaka with a knowledgeable local friend. Kalid’s recommendations were excellent, and thanks to him we got to experience places and details we never would have found on our own. His energy, friendliness, and professionalism truly made the day special. If you’re visiting Osaka and want an authentic, enjoyable, and unforgettable experience, I cannot recommend Kalid highly enough. One of the best tour guides we’ve ever had.
Great tour with Mayura Kai! Went all over, learned about Osaka, and learned a lot about navigating the subway and trains!
Kai was an absolutely wonderful tour guide in Osaka! She went above and beyond to make our experience memorable by showing us so many incredible sites and sharing the history and culture along the way. She was also extremely helpful with practical advice on navigating the trains, traveling around the city, and recommending amazing places to eat that we never would have found on our own. Her kindness, patience, and knowledge made our trip so much easier and more enjoyable. We truly appreciated all of her help and would highly recommend Kai to anyone visiting Osaka!
My afternoon with Timea was fabulous. She took me on a shopping excursion and showed me much more than just stores. Her friendly personality & great knowledge base were so appreciated. I had a very fun time with Timea. Thank you so much!
Unfortunately this was nothing close to what we expected. Our tour guide was not outspoken, we had seen two places from our suggested locations. We had felt like following a tail behind. We received some historical information, but overall this trip was not worth the money we paid. We probably would have the same or better experience with the Google Map :(
Great experience to explore Osaka!
Mayu went above and beyond on our tour. She gave us so many different samples of food that we really felt like we got a taste of Osaka. In addition, she took numerous photo ops for us as well as taught us some Japanese along the way. Her energy was very warm which made it easy for us to engage with her and ask plenty of questions.
Maria was a fabulous guide and host. She was fun and very knowledgeable. It was raining the day of the tour, and she adjusted the tour accordingly. She took us to little hidden gems and places we would have never discovered on our own. Though it was raining buckets at some places, we had such a fun time with Maria. Of all the places I enjoyed Sumiyoshi Shrine. It was surreal in the rain! She speaks excellent English and I would highly recommend her. Her made our the otherwise tedious rainy rainy fun and wonderful.
We had an excellent tour in Osaka with Shingo. He was friendly, well prepared and informative throughout the day of the tour. Prior to our tour Singo was very responsive as we developed the itinerary for our tour. He was committed to showcasing Osaka and maximizing what we could see in our time. His English was excellent and he ensured that our experience was amazing.
Maria was very friendly and knowledgable about Osaka having lived here for 30 years. She met us at our hotel, and we walked and took the subway all over the city. She shared anecdotes that made the city come alive and returned us to our hotel. We were able to navigate to the more interesting places on our own the next day.
We loved our Osaka walking tour with hidden gems. It was raining and Khalid was very accommodating to change our itinerary accordingly. Khalid was also a fantastic guide who was full of passion, knowledge and great fun. Highly recommend.
Kai was fantastic. She provided a really tailored, off the beaten track experience. We saw a local shrine out of town, a local food market and eateries and sampled some great food along the way. Highly recommended. Thank you Kai!
Great tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable highly recommend this tour for Osaka. Karim was very patient.
